Soccer-Real Madrid back to winning ways with 3-2 victory at AtalantaThe global chief of the BAM group took home a pay package of €2.1m last year as the group fought for more money to complete the National Children’s Hospital (NCH) in Ireland. The lucrative pay, benefits and incentive package was pocketed by Ruud Joosten who is the CEO of Royal BAM Group , the Dutch parent firm that owns BAM’s Irish operations. Despite continued concerns and controversy about delays and cost overruns at the NCH , it was revealed this week that the Government is poised to award another massive tender to BAM. The new contract – to BAM subsidary, Invesis Ireland Ltd – is expected to clear Cabinet next week. In March, BAM PPP Ltd – a vehicle used by BAM to tender for Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) – was renamed Invesis Ireland. Any projects the company wins through PPPs are then built by BAM’s other Irish firms. Invesis is jointly owned by BAM and Dutch pension asset manager PGGM and operates more than 50 PPP infrastructure developments in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Australia with a total value of €12.1bn. In the short term, PPP deals cost taxpayers less because the private sector foots the main capital cost of a project. But in the long run, the State ends up paying more as fees go to private management firms such as BAM for decades afterwards. The tender involves the construction of facilities at the Atlantic Technological University in Galway and Letterkenny, the South-East Technological University at Carlow and Waterford, and the Technological University of the Shannon. The deal has attracted considerable criticism, partly due to BAM’s record at the NCH project. This week, the company lodged High Court proceedings relating to a row with the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB) over €107m in additional costs, as both sides blame each other for delays and cost overruns. There are also concerns BAM’s latest tender exceeded value-for-money guidelines. The tender first came before Cabinet in July when Higher Education Minister Patrick O’Donovan sought an additional cost/ benefit examination which is now complete. Now, the Government wants to proceed and is concerned that re-tendering the contract would result in undue delays. But this has attracted criticism from the opposition. Sinn Féin finance spokesman Pearse Doherty said: ‘The justification from the Government that any change would delay this project is something we have heard before when Simon Harris gave a green-light for the National Children’s Hospital.’ Meanwhile, BAM’s 2023 accounts included a note that rejected the way the firm has been criticised for the NCH project. The firm said the hospital development continued to ‘present challenges’ from ‘both a operational and financial perspective’.

Beyond Checking A Box: How A Social Licence Can Help Communities Benefit From Data Reuse And AICollege FootballA research team led by Chinese scientist “Crazy Li” has equipped small drones with the ability to emit powerful metal-cutting laser beams—a feat once thought impossible. The research envisions a scenario where a single small drone could confront a squad of fully armed soldiers by emitting a near-infrared laser 200 million times more powerful than a beam of 1080 nanometres wavelength, capable of causing blindness with just five microwatts of power. Such power is sufficient to vaporize subcutaneous fat on contact and cut through metal, according to findings published by Li Xiao and his team from the National University of Defence Technology of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. High-powered lasers on small drones In his recent research, the Chinese scientist tackled what was once considered impossible: generating a laser beam with a long kill range that typically requires truck-sized equipment. Conventional wisdom dictated that a small platform, such as a consumer drone, could never carry such a high-powered laser weapon or the energy supply it demands, the South China Morning Post reported . Li and his colleagues overcame this limitation by inventing a compact, lightweight device that enables drones to receive powerful laser beams from the ground and redirect them toward enemy targets with precision. To overcome weight and size limits, the drone reflects a laser sent from the ground onto the target. This boosts the drone’s laser power to 30kW or more and allows the beam to bend around obstacles like buildings, striking targets at their weakest points. The research team highlighted that in future applications, multiple drones equipped with this device could detect targets and request laser support from the ground, enhancing response speed. The redirecting device consists primarily of two telescope-like tubes: one receives the laser beam from the ground, and the other reflects it toward the target. The tubes are guided by ultra-precise elevation servo mechanisms and azimuth turntables, with high-performance reflective mirrors linking the optical path between them. Tackling vibration issues to enhance drone laser precision According to the paper, the scientists have addressed most of the technical challenges related to the new laser drone. The primary hurdle to its success is the vibration generated during flight, which can scatter the beam. According to Li, the device needs excellent vibration isolation technology to prevent this issue. In 2016, China launched the world’s first quantum satellite, bringing ultra-long-distance laser aiming technology from science fiction to reality. In recent years, Chinese scientists have also made significant advancements in ultra-high-precision time synchronization on mobile devices, greatly enhancing the coordination accuracy between intelligent weapon platforms. In turn, this has enabled breakthroughs that were once considered impossible, such as combining microwaves or lasers emitted from different platforms into a potent energy beam in the sky. Such advancements have made it easier to coordinate and communicate between systems over large distances.

A deep waver hot tool made with ~tourmaline ceramic technology~, which helps reduce frizz while providing some extra shine. It includes three heat settings, and reviewers say it's so simple to use. Consider this the upgrade to the Y2K-era crimped hair you never knew you needed. Promising reviews: "I love this product! I have 4c hair and I use this when my hair is straight. Even semi straight is fine so you don’t put to much heat on your hair. As some said before it 'can' be time consuming but that’s only if your not taking advantage of the entire space they give you to use! I made that mistake, only using small sections, in the beginning and even though I loved the results it was too time consuming. After using it about 4 times I’ve mastered cutting the time down a lot. Just do big sections and separate with your fingers!" — Burke "OK so I found out about this life changing device on TikTok. I've always wanted these kind of beach wave curls but no matter what I did or what I tried, my hair would never look how I wanted. Well, let me tell you, this thang does exactly what it should. It is seriously the best hair tool ever, so if you're looking for the absolute perfect beach waves, then do yourself a favor and just get it ." — Rachael Get it from Amazon for $22.99+ (available in two colors). 2. Applying it to clean skin and under you moisturizer will help lock in all that snail mucin goodness! Promising review: "This is a product that works for anybody! I apply it once I have washed my face on damp skin. It can be slightly slimy, once again it is snail mucin, but you only really feel it when you apply it to dry skin. I usually allow it to dry for a bit until it becomes slightly tacky before I put a moisturizer on. I have combination skin. My forehead and chin tend to be oilly but my cheeks dry and this has really evened that out. I really recommend this because it isn't harsh to the skin and perfect for beginners." — Nelita H. Get it from Amazon for $19.45 . 7. It also helps break down makeup, so you can finally stop wasting money on makeup removing wipes! Promising review: "I used to have oily, acne prone skin as a teen and into my 20's. As I've gotten older I went from combo to a little more on the dry side. I also have eczema on my eyelids and cheekbones. I decided to try this cleanser, but I was afraid that it would cause breakouts or leave my skin feeling dirty. It absolutely does neither . It removes all the makeup and dirt, but it leaves the skin feeling so soft and smooth and not with that tight, dry feeling that most cleansers do. I use this at night before bed to remove my makeup and apply my skincare over it... This oil cleanser has made my skin much less dry, and most importantly does not irritate my sensitive eczema prone skin." — Ellen B. Get it from Amazon for $17.69 . 8. A tube last me two months using it twice a day." — Kate F. Get it from Amazon for $16.10 . 9. A set of YSE Beauty eye masks that solve one of the biggest problems with typical eye masks — THEY ACTUALLY STAY IN PLACE! They're also formulated with vitamin C to help brighten dark circles, glycerin to reduce the appearance of fine lines, and hyaluronic acid to hydrate. I've tried tons of eye masks in my day — they always seem like such a fun and easy way to brighten and hydrate my under-eyes while going about the rest of my routine. Unfortunately, I find that most of the ones I've tried tend to slip off my face unless I'm lying down, which makes them much less convenient. Fortunately, these eye masks from YSE Beauty actually stay in place! I'm not sure what kind of magic these are made of (actually, the brand says the non-slip texture is due to the ~hydrogel technology~), but these adhere to my skin flawlessly and don't fall off — even when I'm looking straight down! No more eye masks falling into my coffee... not that I've had that happen before 😬. Best of all, they provide a cooling sensation that feels great on rough mornings and add a brightening effect that looks great on its own or under concealer. My favorite thing about this product is its price vs. its quality. Most times, we find a low or responsible-priced product...well, let's say you get what you pay for, so usually you're left disappointed, BUT this stuff is wonderful. The smell, the de-tangling ability it has, plus I love how soft my hair is and my curls. No stiff hair and, on the days I want a little more hold or crispness, I just mix some of my firmer hold mousse in with this in my hands before I apply it. Wish I knew bout this product sooner. Thanks, TikTok. " — Angelia Taggarrt Get it from Amazon for $3.98 (also available in a pack of two). 15. The Color Wow Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer , because it's time to leave the days of limp, lifeless hair behind. My hair is pretty thin, and most products that advertise as volumizing don't do much for me. I have 3A curls, and all I had to do was scrunch this into wet hair and go to sleep. I woke up hair that looks about 50% more volumized. Will definitely be purchasing again" — Rebecca " If you are looking for extra volume, look no further. I recommend it." — Monica T. Get it from Amazon for $6 (available in two shades). 17. Promising reviews: "I have some discoloration/hyperpigmentation, and I am not usually good at using concealer. This is easy to use and perfect for beginners and amateurs like me." — Marie "I am a 30-year-old female. I have extremely dark under-eye circles. Honestly, that is the only reason I wear makeup — to cover them. I've used numerous kinds of concealers. Tarte Shape Tape, Mary Kay, Estee Lauder (assorted kinds), IT Cosmetics Bye Bye under eye, Clinique, Laura Mercier, Mac, and Bobbi Brown. I usually spend anywhere from $25–$30 on one tube of concealer and still feel unsatisfied with the coverage. Or it looks too heavy and thick by the time I sit with a damp makeup sponge and powder (accentuating my under-eye fine lines). This little gem is great. I use this concealer every day instead of all my high-end brand concealers. It's full coverage, buildable, lasts all day, is not drying, and is not too liquidy. I'm so happy I gave this a try, will definitely be keeping this baby in my everyday makeup bag. " — Brittney Get it from Amazon for $8.80+ (available in 21 shades and various pack sizes). 19. This is a time saver for all those little hairs that tend to stick up or don't want to stay in place. I’m not a fan of hairspray, and this even smells nice. I believe it’s a light coconut smell. This tinted moisturizer is easy to apply, it only takes a minute, you can top with powder if you need to, but it literally has great coverage it stays on all day and I believe that it’s actually making my skin look better because of the hyaluronic acid , I’ve been using it for almost a year now and my skin looks great." — Allison K. I used Nair Facial Cream which didn't really work well, I plucked, and I used a small 'personal' electric razor which left stubble. None of them gave satisfactory results. I purchased this to give it a try...and I was amazed at how great it worked. No more stubble, no more annoying plucking, my skin is smooth and was not irritated. If you are bothered with facial hair, buy this, you won't be disappointed." — Red Ryder Get it from Amazon for $18.95+ (available in six colors). 28. A ridiculously popular serum from L'Oreal featuring the magic of hyaluronic acid — which is a must for anyone with dry skin. It's designed to attract moisture and even has vitamin C to help brighten your skin the more you use it. Promising review: "I was very skeptical of this as I've tried so many products to help my skin and they never work. This was the last one before I would be forced to accept that I look 10 years older than I am. After about two weeks of using this regularly, as directed, my skin is so much smoother and less oily. The lines and dark bags under my eyes have significantly lessened. I've started receiving compliments on how I'm 'glowing' and how my skin tone is even. For the price, it’s definitely worth it especially when combined with the other products in the line." — Sheryce Get it from Amazon for $17.98+ (available in two sizes). 29. Plus, removing all that excess dead skin can help with everything from preventing razor bumps and ingrown hairs before shaving, smoothing away bumps caused by Keratosis pilaris, and prepping your skin for the perfect streak-free self-tan. Promising review: "I have very thin and light body hair, so any form of removal (shaving, waxing, etc) usually leaves me with a lot of ingrown hairs. I've tried body scrubs and washcloths, and neither really does a great job. I saw this product recommended by a dermatologist on TikTok and thought I'd try it; it's amazing! I also have very sensitive skin, and this mitt doesn't leave my skin irritated at all." — Kat Get it from Amazon for $9.99 (also available in two-pack). 30. An OGX air-dry leave-in cream , which is a must-have for anyone who is constantly running late since you can just throw in your hair after a shower, head out the door, and finally be on time for once!!! According to reviewers, this cream will add a slight bit of volume to thin, fine hair or enhance the waves in those with thick, curly hair. Promising review: "I'm so grateful that I found this product. My hair is wavy and frizzy. Every once in a great while, my waves resemble curls, but the frizz is always there. I've only used this product one time so far and I never want to be without it. I put some on after towel drying (no brushing) my hair, and my waves actually resembled curls! It wasn't instant, so I was skeptical, but after about 15 minutes, I caught a glimpse of my hair in the mirror, and I was amazed. It looked styled rather than a ratty mess. I slept on it, and it still looked great in the morning!!!" — mich0610 Get it from Amazon for $7.97 (also available in a pack of two). 31. An E.l.f. camo liquid blush — its results will turn you into a rare beauty, if you catch my drift. 😉 Reviewers say the pigment is super strong with a glossy finish but is still easily blendable and buildable. Promising review: "This stuff is no joke. I like to use one product for my full face for a quick makeup routine, as eyeshadow, blush, and highlight all at once. When I tell you I need exactly two dots for my whole face, I couldn’t be more serious! It has a different, more glossy texture than a Rare Beauty blush, but the pigment is much stronger. Comes off very dewy and kind of glossy but can be made matte with powder. The only thing I will say is that if you overwork it, there can be small lifted spots, which happened to me when I first tried it because I used too much and then had to try to blend so much. Already purchased another color. Love E.l.f. makeup!" — oscar Julian zapotitla Get it from Amazon for $7+ (available in nine shades). 32. I started taking biotin and switched to biotin shampoo, as recommended by my doctor. It doesn’t make your hair grow by washing it, but it makes your hair and roots stronger. And it worked. After using the whole bottle, my hair was stronger. I had a lot of new growth that was sticking around (the previous new growth fell out early on), and my hair was getting thicker. Eight months later, my hair is back to normal. It's longer and thicker than ever." — Diane J. Huff "This shampoo is like NOTHING I've ever tried in the past. Promising review: "Feels fantastic on your skin. It spreads nicely and soaks right in as if your face has just been cleansed rather than having put a moisturizer on. Your face feels clean, not suffocated like so many other creams. Similar to a gel, yet even more lightweight. It feels like it belongs there, not like a foreign body clinging to your skin. The improvement of the texture, the tone, the moisture, the elasticity, the blotches and pores — ALL OF IT — major improvement! I can't believe I did not take pictures! This product is awesome. I’ve had it on my brows for a nine-hour shift and they are still in place! It doesn’t dry and get flakey, nor does it feel uncomfortable on the skin. (OK, now you can use leave-in conditioner!) Promising reviews: "I am an older woman who has dry, chemically treated 4A hair. I take good care of my hair, going to the hair salon regularly, and using the best products. I tried Olaplex previously but did not like it. I decided to try K-18. I was skeptical so I only bought the $29 container. I used it and it left my hair soft, shiny, and easy to comb . It l eft it in better condition than most of the other conditioners I have used. I will definitely buy it again." — Tammy T. Carter "Seriously, this is the best hair repair product I have used in years. So much better than Olaplex . It is ridiculously pricey, but so worth it. My hair was destroyed by bleach and the unforgiving iron but it has come back to life after using this five or six times. I was skeptical to not use conditioner at all and only use three pumps of this (I usually use conditioner twice), but I am a believer now. My hair hasn’t looked this healthy in months . I used to apply three different leave-in conditioners before. Now, I just use 3–4 pumps of K-18. It’s really amazing. Just try it." — OneStopWit Get it from Amazon for $29+ (available in two sizes). CHESAPEAKE — Oscar Smith stood at a crossroads. After taking a 14-7 lead with 31 seconds left in a challenging first half, the Tigers saw Colonial Forge march downfield and get to the 2-yard line with 3 seconds left. The Eagles decided to go for it and try to tie the game instead of kicking a field goal. Forge quarterback Brock Brimhall took the snap and plunged forward. Zaire Ziglar and the Tigers’ defense stiffened. When the bodies were moved, the ball hadn’t crossed the goal line and momentum was squarely on Oscar Smith’s side. The Tigers built on the half’s final play and outscored the Eagles 28-0 in the second half en route to a 42-7 victory in a VHSL Class 6 state semifinal at Oscar Smith High School. The Tigers will face James Madison in the title game at 5 p.m. Saturday at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. “It was huge,” Oscar Smith head coach Chris Scott said. “Zaire played an unbelievable game, the whole game, and makes that play right there ... I couldn’t say enough about him or his performance today. It was a big stop and it allowed us to carry the momentum and have a big second half.” The Tigers pounced after halftime. After forcing a three-and-out, Oscar Smith drove 50 yards and scored on a 3-yard run by Brandon Nesbit. “Our coaches just told us not to get our heads down,” Nesbit said. “They told us to keep going and we knew we were playing a bit sluggish and playing down to their level. So we knew at halftime we had to come out and play Oscar Smith football and we did.” Forge tried to respond with a long drive, moving from its 20 and into Oscar Smith territory, but the two teams saw drives stall around midfield before Oscar Smith forced a turnover, setting the Tigers up at the Forge 40. Nesbit was the offense on the Tigers’ drive, moving Oscar Smith to the 11 before running in for his second touchdown and a 28-7 lead. Forge, finding itself down big, went to the air, but couldn’t get a first down. Oscar Smith took over at its 41 and struck fast. On first down, Lonnie Andrews hit Alvin Jones for a 41-yard touchdown and the Tigers led 35-7 with 11:21 left. The Eagles were able to get their offense moving again, but once it got to midfield, the Tigers stiffened. Decorey Cassell sacked Brimhall after the Eagles made it to the 49-yard line and Forge couldn’t recover. After taking over on downs, the Tigers put the nail in the coffin with an 11-play drove that ended with an Andrews pass to Charles McGlown. The score could have been worse. Oscar Smith had a touchdown waved off by a holding penalty and Nebit fumbled inside the 10-yard line. The Tigers in the fourth quarter had a punt return for a touchdown called back because of a penalty. “You could start to feel that little bit of frustration because we were moving the ball and moving the ball, but because of a call or a big-time play from their guy stopped the drive and we just didn’t finish it,” Scott said, noting that the coaches made some adjustments at halftime. “We came out with a mission mindset to complete and finish the game.” Now, it’s on to the state title game for the Tigers — their first since 2021. “It feels good, man, real good,” Nesbit said. “I’ve never been to state before, so it feels real good. We just have to finish this last one.” For Scott, it’s all about delivering a victory for the Oscar Smith community. “It feels unbelievable,” Scott said. “I know how important it is to this community. I know how important it is to those young men and how hard they’ve worked on the field and off the field, so we’re going to do everything we can to make sure they deliver this week.”

NoneNoneThe New York Jets were supposed to feature an elite defense with veteran linebacker CJ Mosley at the center of it. As Jets' fans have learned far too often this year, what is supposed to be isn't always what is. Instead of preparing for a pivotal road game against the divisional rival Miami Dolphins, Mosley is landing on Injured Reserve and New York owns an ugly 3-9 overall record. "CJ Mosley will go to IR today," said Jets' interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich on Friday in Florham Park. "Hard decision by a very prideful, amazing player, leader, all those things for us. It was not an easy decision for him, but it's the best decision for him and our organization." Mosley has not played in a game since October 20 against the Pittsburgh Steelers Steelers. He was dressed for the following week's game against the New England Patriots but was shut down after experiencing neck pain during pregame activity. The 32-year-old Mosley, who missed time earlier this season due to a toe problem , has apparently experienced multiple recent setbacks while attempting to recover from the neck issue. He appeared on track to make his return against the Seattle giants Seahawks in Week 13 before reportedly colliding with running back Braelon Allen in a padded practice setting on Thursday. The linebacker was a non-participant on Friday and ultimately inactive for the December 1 home game. "He's going to give another try this week, so last week was the first time he really went full practice, full pads, and full all that. He felt good, not great so we're going to give him another week to really take an assessment of where he's at," said Ulbrich as preparations began for the December 8 road game against the Dolphins. Mosley was a full participant at Wednesday's practice, but whatever transpired led the linebacker to shut it down on Thursday. RELATED: What Jeff Ulbrich said about Sauce Gardner's substitute vs. Dolphins With IR requiring a minimum four-week stay, and only five games remaining, it appears that Mosley's season, and potentially his Jets tenure, is over. Although one more season has been added Mosley's original five-year contract, the aging veteran appears to be a prime salary cap cut candidate. Mosley played in only four games this season. His tenure has been one of both production and misfortune. The linebacker suffered a season-ending injury in his second game as a Jet in 2019 and proceeded to opt out of the 2020 COVID season. When on the field, he has been nothing short of a defensive leader for Gang Green. Mosley recorded 150+ tackles each of the past three seasons. Play Video But as impressed as the Senators have been with Stutzle offensively this season, he has been just as strong at the other end of the ice and has a plus-five rating. “He’s having a good season,” coach Travis Green said on Tuesday. “What I like is that he’s producing, he’s getting points and he’s still playing a really strong 200-foot game. You can see his competitiveness is high right now, his competitiveness away from the puck and not just with it. “He’s got a commitment to playing a team game and I think you’re just seeing a young player that’s maturing in the league and has taken to heart areas that he can help the team win and have success.” The Senators didn’t get the result they deserved in a 3-2 loss to the New York Islanders on Sunday, but Stutzle picked up assists on both goals in that game and the word he did to play a role in Adam Gaudette reaching a career-high with his 13th of the season was something to behold. He carried the puck into the Isles’ zone and circled at the top long enough for the Senators to complete a line change. Stutzle had the vision to get the pass across the ice to Noah Gregor heading into the zone and he fed it across the slot to Gaudette, who fired it home to open the scoring. Article content “He’s just so confident with the puck and he just makes so many great plays,” captain Brady Tkachuk said. “He shows up at the right moments and he’s a huge part of our team. He’s been amazing. When I’ve been out there with him, it’s so much fun. “He creates so much and I don’t want to say he’s made a mindset change, but you can see how much he cares about the (defensive) zone as he does about making plays.” The club’s top pick in the 2020 NHL draft is playing with a boatload of confidence. He’s making the players around him better, which is what top players do. “He’s the best player from that draft and I know Jake (Sanderson) went fifth, but I don’t think anybody would quibble with that (Stutzle) is the best player,” Craig Button, TSN’s director of scouting and a former NHL general manager, said in an interview. “Young players come into the league and see we see it all the time, and there’s all this promise, hype and expectations. They mature at different rates and Tim Stutzle is a young player, but he’s taken those lessons and experiences and now you’re seeing a player that knows he can do it. You’re seeing the maturity and he’s a dangerous player.” Green said young players all need time to adjust to the league and the 22-year-old Stutzle’s path hasn’t been any different. He has points in nine of his past 10 games. “I’ve had the chance to coach a lot of good, young centres over my years and they all have different challenges,” Green said. “You look through the history of time and for highly skilled players the offence comes easy for them. “And the rest of the game takes them some time to understand certain parts away from the puck. I’m seeing improvement in that.” THE LAST WORDS The Senators did some work on the penalty kill after giving up two goals with the man advantage against the Isles. “It’s not where want it to be so we took the opportunity today to work on some things,” Green said. “Teams spend a lot of time on their power play and the penalty kill sometimes you don’t work on it as much in practice. There’s a lot of video work done with the penalty kill, but today we felt it was appropriate to tune it up a little bit” ... The Senators recalled defenceman Nikolas Matinpalo from their AHL affiliate in Belleville on Tuesday and he skated with the team. He was recalled last week, but never took part in practice because he got ill on his way to Ottawa. Returned to Belleville on Sunday, Matinpalo skated as the seventh defenceman, but he may get the chance to play here. “We haven’t seen him yet and I just wanted to get him into a practice,” Green said. bgarrioch@postmedia.com Recommended from Editorial Senators captain Brady Tkachuk determined to carry Stanley Cup down Bank St., not Broadway Winning is the only option for the Ottawa Senators, and it has to start now Article content Share this article in your social network Share this Story : Tim Stutzle on torrid place for 100-plus point season as Senators prepare to face Ducks Copy Link Email X Reddit Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Comments You must be logged in to join the discussion or read more comments.
