President Biden’s decision to renege on his pledge not to pardon his prodigal son’s crimes has consequences for the American justice system. Ironically, it also may diminish resistance to President-elect Trump pardoning members of the mob that stormed the Capitol nearly four years ago in an effort to overturn Biden’s 2020 election victory. The two situations are not equivalent, of course. Still, they both tear at the heart of America’s scruples. More than 1,100 Trump supporters got convicted of participating in the siege that sent a joint session of Congress into hiding, injured scores of police officers and left the Capitol in a shambles. Several defendants received probation for misdemeanor charges of entering the Capitol with the mob. But more than 600 were imprisoned from one month to up to 22 years on felony charges of destroying property, assault and battery or encouraging the attack. Trump described them as “political prisoners” and “patriots,” promising to pardon them if elected president again. He said recently he will decide their pardons on a case-by-case basis. A song titled “Justice for All” described their fate. Created and posted often on social media by a group of Jan. 6 defendants (“J6 Choir”) locked in a Washington, D.C. jail block, the song’s popularity drew sympathizers across the country. It briefly made music’s top hits list. Democrats and legal experts denounce Tump’s plan to pardon Jan. 6 defendants as victims of misguided justice. The objection is somewhat hypocritical in the aftermath of Biden pardoning son Hunter. He was convicted of lying on a gun license application and income tax evasion. What devastates the rule of law is Biden’s broken pledge to let his son face the consequences of his felony crimes, including possible prison time. His stunning turnaround occurred, he said, because his son was a victim of a Justice Department political prosecution. That’s the exact reason Trump advances for his intent to pardon some, if not all, the Jan. 6 defendants. He also claims that’s why he was prosecuted and convicted of 34 felonies in his hush money trial as well as charges pending in his other legal cases. Oddly, it seems Biden and Trump agree the Justice Department has been weaponized for political means. Trump says when he returns to office he will rid the department, including its FBI office, of what he calls partisan hacks bent on destroying the country. They will, of course, be replaced by diehard loyalists committed to his America First agenda. Democrats can hardly object. Their president of the last four years has damned the Justice Department and demoralized its employees for his own sake. And just two months before departing the White House. Listen to his attempt to rationalize the decision to pardon his son when he said repeatedly he would not. “For my entire career I have followed a simple principle: just tell the American people the truth. They will be fair-minded,” Biden said in a statement. “Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected the process and it led to a miscarriage of justice (of his son).” Biden asked Americans to understand “why a father and a president would come to this decision.” Many will not. Sure, other presidents, including Trump in his first term, granted pardons to family and friends for alleged criminal behavior. In most of these cases, the persons pardoned felt the outcome of their sentences, including prison time. Biden’s rollback of his no pardon pledge – just two weeks before his son’s sentencing -- disregarded the legal standard that no person is above the law; that everyone is treated equally no matter their station in life. Organized by the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) and the UNESCO National Commission, the workshop was held in partnership with the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE), the Embassy of Canada, Commission on Higher Education Technical Committee, UP College of Mass Communication, St. Theresa’s College of Cebu, and Philippine Star. Earlier initiatives included an Experts’ Consultative Meeting on Journalism Education held in Paris in 2008 and two experts’ consultative meetings involving all regions of the world. The draft curricula was formally presented at the 2007 joint meetings in Singapore by the World Journalism Education Congress andAsian Media and Information Center (AMIC). Already, there was recognition of the tremendous impact of the new information technology. Change was shown in the practice of journalism, specifically in information generation, processing and delivery and exchange. No longer do we talk about print, radio or TV journalism but content, format, and processes. Convergence made it imperative for traditionally trained journalists to collaborate with emergent journalists in cyberspace – bloggers, vloggers, and members of networks. Journalism education must demonstrate a multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral approach in training and content development. The new model curricula recognizes that journalists and information professionals must be trained to become listeners, mediators, catalysts. They must be able to “triangulate” the views from above, below, and from a variety of sectors. It was also recognized that journalism curricula must operate in a “democratic” environment and within a culture of tolerance and peace. I then equated the process of information handling and transformation to that of a painter handling a brush. The new journalist and painter starts by allowing his values, intuition, passion guide the flow of words or stroke of the brush. The new curricula is built on these three lines – an axis representing the norms, values, tools, standards; the social, cultural, political economic, legal and ethical aspects within the national borders; and an axis focused on knowledge of the world and the new intellectual challenges. What then is new? At the second session series of community journalism knowledge sharing held last week, Fr. Benigno Beltran, founder of the Sandiwaan Center of Learning presented how his learning approach based on the convergence model of solidarity (collaboration), integrity (truth, transparency, empathy), and creativity (learning to work with the new media of AI and new information technology), can be tailored for the training of “digital natives.” Can we build a new approach that is responsive, rights-based, and community-centered in journalism education? The new model, which is based on democratic values and sustainable development, must inspire and ignite the values and mindsets needed to “light the fire,” awaken the learner’s passion and ensure that he/she can become a catalyst of freedom of expression and change in the communities. The Community Journalism Scholarship Fund, which started this year with six scholars one each from Mindanao State University in Marawi, University of Mindanao in Davao City, Silliman University, Visayas State University, Bicol University, and the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC), participated in the monthly zoom meet by sharing stories of innovations at their respective institutions and communities. The scholarship for two years includes costs for school fees, books and learning materials, internship and mentors’ fees. The 6-foot-5, 290-pounder saw 56 defensive snaps this fall and 33 on special teams across 10 games. He recorded his lone tackle at Purdue. Jackson called the decision “bittersweet” in his farewell post. Stefon Thompson moved to enter the transfer portal Monday following one campaign as a Husker. The former Syracuse defender played four seasons with the Orange — three there under defensive coordinator Tony White, the two-year Nebraska assistant coach who is in talks to take the same coordinator position at Florida State. Thompson this season saw 175 defensive snaps — and 49 on special teams — across 11 games while logging 27 tackles, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery against Wisconsin. He played just 37 snaps during NU’s last five games and walked for Senior Day ceremonies. Thompson will have a sixth and final year to spend elsewhere. His considerable experience includes 47 college games and 199 career tackles. The Nebraska linebacker rotation will look considerably different next season. At least two of the three most-used Blackshirts have exhausted their eligibility in John Bullock and Javin Wright, while Mikai Gbayor can return once more in 2025. Based on NCERT syllabus, the Hindi textbook named ‘ Nav Kislay ' for class 1 will carry the chapter on Vanya in academic session 2025-26. The chapter about Vanya, who began teaching yoga at the tender age of 8, is titled ‘Yog ki gudiya: Vanya'. Vanya acquired her yoga expertise from her father Nagendra Bahadur Singh Chauhan, who is renowned for conducting approximately 100 complimentary yoga camps for public. Currently 16 years old, Vanya is a class 12 student of SR Global school. During the Covid period, a 45-minute documentary showcasing how Vanya and her father Nagendra assisted people in learning yoga was broadcast on national television and various social media platforms."The book adheres to NCERT syllabus and holds special significance for us as it features our daughter," said Chauhan, adding, "This lesson spans from page number 61 to page number 67 and details extensively my daughter Kavyanjali Singh Chauhan ‘Vanya's' yoga knowledge," expressed her proud father. He elaborated that the chapter commenced with his daughter's narrative of teaching yoga and helping people maintain fitness. It chronicles how she initiated yoga at age 8 and mastered even the most challenging asanas effortlessly. Beyond their locality in ‘Bakshi ka talab', she provided complimentary yoga instruction and conducted online sessions during the Covid period. "Initially, I brought her along to observe my yoga sessions in organised camps and I was astounded when I discovered this 8-year-old instructing women in precise yoga asanas during the camp," said Chauhan. "Yoga enables me to maintain fitness, enhance focus, improve concentration, and retain lessons effectively.
