She also wanted a place with plenty of museums, affordable housing and a healthy amount of social justice advocacy. “Philadelphia fit my bill,” she said, smiling. Perlo moved to the City of Brotherly Love about 20 years ago, fell in love with it quickly and has stayed in love with it since. As someone who comes from a state and region that isn’t exactly bustling with Jewish life, Perlo said she has found herself energized by the large Jewish community of Philadelphia. “I didn’t know that the options for Jewish life in Philadelphia were so extensive,” she said. “I love that I can hop on a train and go do Jewish stuff two hours north in New York, too, or two hours south in D.C.” Perlo said that the best part of the city she now calls home, however, is its status as a premier spot to study trauma. Trauma is Perlo’s focus, which she teaches and writes about, largely through a Jewish lens. In Philadelphia, she has gotten the chance to learn from the world’s best. “In 2010, there were two M.D.s who started a new Ph.D. program at Drexel in trauma studies that had no precedent — looking at how trauma is an epidemic through epidemiological and statistical analysis,” Perlo said. She said that the Jewish values of feeding the hungry, caring for the homeless and helping and visiting sick people are shared by social workers. “There are infinite correlations between the two,” she said. For Perlo, the appeal of the thriving Jewish community of Philadelphia is largely in the social aspect of the group. She said that there is one familiar Jewish tradition that really grounds her and reminds her often why she loves her new home. “Part of my gratitude to Philadelphia is for the Jewish activities, which I spend a lot of my time doing. Shabbos is one of the things that has really kept my life juicy and sustained. More than I keep Shabbos, Shabbos keeps me, and it enables me to do things like write a book,” she said. “I can step back and think, ‘What are the words I want to convey? What are the messages that I think will best lift someone up?’” Perlo has been all around and seen Judaism in practice in just about every corner of the country. She said that every community brings its own flair to modern interpretations of Judaism. In the West, she experienced vegan Shabbat dinners and Torah yoga. In Texas, she attended kosher barbecues and fundraisers to benefit the Jewish community and the state of Israel. In Philadelphia, the Jewish experience revolves around community, history and the appreciation of the rich tradition of Jewish community leaders. Perlo said that she thinks that she has gained so much from learning about other places and the people that call them home. “Some people aren’t interested in exploring the different parts of the Jewish community, but I am, and I think it makes us more whole to find out what everyone’s soul is wanting, and why,” she said.
