Enron , once among the largest energy companies in the U.S., has become a punchline since it famously collapsed amid inflated profits and corporate fraud in 2001. Now, social media posts, a slick promotional video and a revamped website suggest the infamous company is making a comeback. On Dec. 2, it posted promotional videos on TikTok , BlueSky and X about adapting to the changing world featuring inspiring imagery and diverse voices claiming "I am Enron" with the tagline, “We're back. Can we talk?” To coincide with the video and website launch, cryptocurrency bloggers speculated Enron will be involved in cryptocurrency exchange. Others speculated the rebranding is fake or parody . THE SOURCES WHAT WE FOUND On Dec. 2, a company calling itself Enron Corporation published a promotional video on social media, introduced a new website and issued a press release announcing a relaunch of the company. But the relaunched website calls itself a parody. The new company with the infamous name is owned by Connor Gaydos, the co-founder of satirical conspiracy group “Birds Aren’t Real.” A disclaimer on the website’s terms of service page reads, “THE INFORMATION ON THE WEBSITE IS FIRST AMENDMENT PROTECTED PARODY, REPRESENTS PERFORMANCE ART, AND IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY.” VERIFY reached out to the media contact listed on Enron’s website and in the press release about the site’s relaunch. Will Chabot , spokesperson for the current Enron brand and managing director of media strategy for Stu Loeser & Co., would not confirm or deny if the company was real or parody, but did direct VERIFY to the company’s articles of incorporation and press release about the relaunch. “I understand you had some questions about Enron's launch. While I'm not able to answer all of them (we'll have more to share soon - including a big announcement in the energy space - and will be sure to keep you in the loop),” Chabot told VERIFY. The latest iteration of Enron Corporation’s articles of incorporation were filed in Delaware on Feb. 28, 2024 by Gaydos, according to records provided to VERIFY by Chabot. Gaydos is the co-founder of Birds Aren’t Real , a satirical conspiracy group founded in 2017 that jokingly claims the U.S. government has been replacing living birds with surveillance drones. Gaydos registered the Enron trademark on May 13, 2020, through his The College Company LLC, which also has registered trademarks for Birds Aren’t Real. According to the trademark application for Enron, the trademark is used for shirts and other merchandise. The new website has merchandise for sale. Archival versions of Enron.com dating back to 1998 are available on The Wayback Machine. In January of 2024, the website domain of enron.com was available for purchase , archives of the page show. The last time that URL represented the bankrupt energy giant was in 2007 . There is no evidence to support claims the Enron brand was relaunched as a cryptocurrency firm, as some have speculated. There is a page on Enron’s new website titled “decentralization,” which is a common term to describe the kind of technology behind cryptocurrency. The website says, “Decentralized technology is advancing, and we will of course have a role to play in its future. We couldn't be more excited to show you, but until then please stay vigilant and avoid falling for scams. When we announce something, you'll know.” The VERIFY team works to separate fact from fiction so that you can understand what is true and false. How Trump’s cabinet picks align with Project 2025’s vision for America’s futureKobe Sanders tied a season high with 27 points as Nevada claimed fifth place in the Charleston Classic with a 90-78 victory over Oklahoma State Sunday afternoon in South Carolina. Sanders helped the Wolfpack (6-1) earn a second win following one-possession games against Vanderbilt and VCU. After hitting the decisive 3-pointer with five seconds left in Friday's 64-61 win over VCU, Sanders made 7 of 10 shots, hit three 3s and sank 10 of 13 free throws Sunday. Nick Davidson added 223 points as Nevada led by as many as 19 and shot 58.9 percent. Brandon Love contributed 11 on 5-of-5 shooting as the Wolfpack scored 46 points in the paint and scored at least 85 for the fourth time this season. Marchelus Avery led the Cowboys (4-2) with 15 points and Arturo Dean added 13. Robert Jennings and Abou Ousmane added 11 apiece but leading scorer Bryce Thompson was held to seven points on 1-of-9 shooting as Oklahoma State shot 42 percent and 73.2 percent (30-of-41) at the line. After Avery's 3 forged a 12-12 tie with 13:41 remaining, Nevada gradually gained separation. The Wolfpack took a 24-15 lead on Chuck Bailey's jumper in the paint with 8:28 left but the Cowboys inched back, getting within 33-31 on a dunk by Avery with 4:11 left. Another Bailey jumper staked Nevada to a 40-33 lead by halftime. Nevada began pulling away early in the second half as it scored eight in a row for a 52-40 lead on a basket by Love with 16:44 left. A 3 by Sanders opened a 62-43 lead with 14:06 remaining before Oklahoma State charged back. After Nevada made eight straight shots, the Cowboys countered with 11 straight points and trailed 62-54 with 11:19 left on a 3-pointer by Avery. Thompson made his first basket by sinking a jumper with 10:37 left to get Oklahoma State within 64-56 left, and Keller's triple cut the margin to 70-64 nearly three minutes later. The Cowboys were within 78-72 on a basket by Avery with 3:56 remaining, but he fouled out about a minute later and the Wolfpack outscored Oklahoma State 12-6 the rest of the way as Sanders sank five free throws. --Field Level Media

The Utes kicked off the scoring with a field goal in the first, but the Cyclones answered back with a touchdown to give them a 3-7 lead heading into the second quarter. Utah answered back with an early second-quarter touchdown off Lander Barton's 87-yard interception which extended the program's streak to be the longest in FBS recorded history. However, Iowa State quickly regained the lead with a touchdown three minutes later, and the two teams both kicked the pigskin through the uprights to end the first half with the Cyclones leading 13-17. State was the only team to score in the third quarter extending their lead to 11 points, but a blocked punt touchdown and a successful two-point conversion to start the fourth quarter gave the Utes some life as they were now within three points. Micah Bernard gave Utah the lead with a little under six minutes to go in the game, but the Cyclones were able to answer back with a minute and a half left in the game. The Luke Bottari-led Utes were able to drive down the field into field goal range, but an intentional grounding penalty pushed them back giving Cole Becker a tough 53-yard attempt to potentially send the game into overtime. Becker missed the kick as he shaved the uprights a little to the right, and that was the game as Iowa State lined up in victory formation, ending the game, 31-28. With the win, the Cyclones are now primed to meet the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Big 12 Championship game in a wild turn of events while the Utes fall to 4-7 on the year with a Friday night game in Orlando against UCF as the final matchup on the docket. Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images With the loss, Utah is officially out of bowl game contention, and Isaac Wilson's injury, while not serious according to Kyle Whittingham is still yet to be determined which will see Bottari under center against 'Space U' in his final game with the program. The offseason can't come soon enough for the Utah faithful and what an offseason it is shaping up to be for the program with a projected highly active transfer portal window as well as staff overhauls in the cards, the Utes seem deadset on making sure a season like this never happens again.
Complications make life-and election predictions-interesting. Reality needn't always comply. The straightforward fashion by which BJP-Shiv Sena©-NCP© in Maharashtra, and JMM-Congress-RJD in Jharkhand, have convincingly won underlines two things: one, 'good continuity' can trump anti-incumbency; two, focusing on multiple 'ground-level' factors is the best recipe for electoral victory. Something that didn't work: polarisation. In Maharashtra, Rahul Gandhi did no favour to Congress chances by embroiling himself in a 'Savarkar controversy', with Pune and Nashik courts summoning him in defamation cases. Playing the 'Adani card' to voters was like throwing firecrackers in the water. In Jharkhand, Amit Shah conjuring up bogeys of tribals being overrun by 'infiltrators' and 'intruders' was a tactic that, similarly, found little takers. Instead, good old schemes, especially those targeted at women-Mukhyamantri-Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana providing ₹1,500 a month to women between 21 and 65 years in Maharashtra, and Maiya Samman Yojana providing ₹1,000 a month to 18-50-yr women in Jharkhand-created the right gravitational forces. Ticket distribution, groundwork and 'non-abstract' campaigning won over voters the way all consumers usually are (and should be): by showcasing past performance and making believable promises with a high 'follow-upability' quotient. BJP 's individual sterling performance in the Maha Yuti makes Devendra Fadnavis a top contender for CM. Incumbent CM Eknath Shinde and NCP chief Ajit Pawar-both who can, by mandate now, after gaining it judicially, lay claim to their legitimacy-should be okay with that arrangement. In the end, both Maharashtra and Jharkhand results show the efficacy of Electioneering 101.

He was 83. Mark Young, Woolery's podcast co-host and friend, said in an email early Sunday that Woolery died at his home in Texas with his wife, Kristen, present. “Chuck was a dear friend and brother and a tremendous man of faith, life will not be the same without him,” Young wrote. Woolery, with his matinee idol looks, coiffed hair and ease with witty banter, was inducted into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame in 2007 and earned a daytime Emmy nomination in 1978. RELATED STORY | Bela Karolyi, polarizing coach who helped shape USA gymnastics, dies at 82 In 1983, Woolery began an 11-year run as host of TV’s “Love Connection,” for which he coined the phrase, “We’ll be back in two minutes and two seconds,” a two-fingered signature dubbed the “2 and 2.” In 1984, he hosted TV’s “Scrabble,” simultaneously hosting two game shows on TV until 1990. “Love Connection,” which aired long before the dawn of dating apps, had a premise that featured either a single man or single woman who would watch audition tapes of three potential mates and then pick one for a date. A couple of weeks after the date, the guest would sit with Woolery in front of a studio audience and tell everybody about the date. The audience would vote on the three contestants, and if the audience agreed with the guest’s choice, “Love Connection” would offer to pay for a second date. Woolery told The Philadelphia Inquirer in 2003 that his favorite set of lovebirds was a man aged 91 and a woman aged 87. "She had so much eye makeup on, she looked like a stolen Corvette. He was so old he said, ‘I remember wagon trains.’ The poor guy. She took him on a balloon ride.” Other career highlights included hosting the shows “Lingo," “Greed” and “The Chuck Woolery Show,” as well as hosting the short-lived syndicated revival of “The Dating Game” from 1998 to 2000 and an ill-fated 1991 talk show. In 1992, he played himself in two episodes of TV’s “Melrose Place.” RELATED STORY | Actor Tony Todd, known for his role in the movie 'Candyman' and other films, dies at 69 Woolery became the subject of the Game Show Network’s first attempt at a reality show, “Chuck Woolery: Naturally Stoned,” which premiered in 2003. It shared the title of the pop song in 1968 by Woolery and his rock group, the Avant-Garde. It lasted six episode and was panned by critics. Woolery began his TV career at a show that has become a mainstay. Although most associated with Pat Sajak and Vanna White, “Wheel of Fortune” debuted Jan. 6, 1975, on NBC with Woolery welcoming contestants and the audience. Woolery, then 33, was trying to make it in Nashville as a singer. “Wheel of Fortune” started life as “Shopper’s Bazaar,” incorporating Hangman-style puzzles and a roulette wheel. After Woolery appeared on “The Merv Griffin Show” singing “Delta Dawn,” Merv Griffin asked him to host the new show with Susan Stafford. “I had an interview that stretched to 15, 20 minutes,” Woolery told The New York Times in 2003. “After the show, when Merv asked if I wanted to do a game show, I thought, ‘Great, a guy with a bad jacket and an equally bad mustache who doesn’t care what you have to say — that’s the guy I want to be.’” NBC initially passed, but they retooled it as “Wheel of Fortune” and got the green light. After a few years, Woolery demanded a raise to $500,000 a year, or what host Peter Marshall was making on “Hollywood Squares.” Griffin balked and replaced Woolery with weather reporter Pat Sajak. “Both Chuck and Susie did a fine job, and ‘Wheel’ did well enough on NBC, although it never approached the kind of ratings success that ‘Jeopardy!’ achieved in its heyday,” Griffin said in “Merv: Making the Good Life Last,” an autobiography from the 2000s co-written by David Bender. Woolery earned an Emmy nod as host. Born in Ashland, Kentucky, Woolery served in the U.S. Navy before attending college. He played double bass in a folk trio, then formed the psychedelic rock duo The Avant-Garde in 1967 while working as a truck driver to support himself as a musician. The Avant-Garde, which tourbed in a refitted Cadillac hearse, had the Top 40 hit “Naturally Stoned,” with Woolery singing, “When I put my mind on you alone/I can get a good sensation/Feel like I’m naturally stoned.” After The Avant-Garde broke up, Woolery released his debut solo single “I’ve Been Wrong” in 1969 and several more singles with Columbia before transitioning to country music by the 1970s. He released two solo singles, “Forgive My Heart” and “Love Me, Love Me.” Woolery wrote or co-wrote songs for himself and everyone from Pat Boone to Tammy Wynette. On Wynette’s 1971 album “We Sure Can Love Each Other,” Woolery wrote “The Joys of Being a Woman” with lyrics including “See our baby on the swing/Hear her laugh, hear her scream.” RELATED STORY | LA news anchor and 'real-life hero' Chauncy Glover dies 'unexpectedly' at 39 After his TV career ended, Woolery went into podcasting. In an interview with The New York Times, he called himself a gun-rights activist and described himself as a conservative libertarian and constitutionalist. He said he hadn’t revealed his politics in liberal Hollywood for fear of retribution. He teamed up with Mark Young in 2014 for the podcast “Blunt Force Truth” and soon became a full supporter of Donald Trump while arguing minorities don’t need civil rights and causing a firestorm by tweeting an antisemitic comment linking Soviet Communists to Judaism. “President Obama’s popularity is a fantasy only held by him and his dwindling legion of juice-box-drinking, anxiety-dog-hugging, safe-space-hiding snowflakes,” he said. Woolery also was active online, retweeting articles from Conservative Brief, insisting Democrats were trying to install a system of Marxism and spreading headlines such as “Impeach him! Devastating photo of Joe Biden leaks.” During the early stages of the pandemic, Woolery initially accused medical professionals and Democrats of lying about the virus in an effort to hurt the economy and Trump’s chances for reelection to the presidency. “The most outrageous lies are the ones about COVID-19. Everyone is lying. The CDC, media, Democrats, our doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I’m sick of it,” Woolery wrote in July 2020. Trump retweeted that post to his 83 million followers. By the end of the month, nearly 4.5 million Americans had been infected with COVID-19 and more than 150,000 had died. Just days later, Woolery changed his stance, announcing his son had contracted COVID-19. “To further clarify and add perspective, COVID-19 is real and it is here. My son tested positive for the virus, and I feel for of those suffering and especially for those who have lost loved ones,” Woolery posted before his account was deleted. Woolery later explained on his podcast that he never called COVID-19 “a hoax” or said “it’s not real,” just that “we’ve been lied to.” Woolery also said it was “an honor to have your president retweet what your thoughts are and think it’s important enough to do that.” In addition to his wife, Woolery is survived by his sons Michael and Sean and his daughter Melissa, Young said.Article content REGINA — Saskatchewan’s legislature is set to resume Monday for a short two-week sitting, with Premier Scott Moe’s Saskatchewan Party planning to get to work on addressing affordability issues after a challenging election campaign . Proceedings are to begin with the election of a new Speaker and the throne speech, which will lay out the government’s priorities. Government house leader Tim McLeod told reporters last week the province plans to introduce legislation that would follow through on campaign promises, including personal tax relief to save a family of four more than $3,400 over four years. He said the government also intends to deal with problems in education, health care and community safety. “We’ll be introducing ... the priority legislation, particularly on affordability ,” McLeod said. “We’re anxious to start going to work for the people of Saskatchewan.” The Saskatchewan Party won 34 constituencies in the Oct. 28 election, enough to form a fifth consecutive majority in the 61-seat legislature but fewer than the 42 seats it had before. Carla Beck’s NDP is to form the Official Opposition with 27 seats after sweeping Regina and winning all but one seat in Saskatoon. Beck said her party’s first order of business is to push the government to pause the 15-cent-a-litre gasoline tax. She said the NDP is to introduce an emergency motion Tuesday that would call for a suspension of the gas tax by Wednesday. “We’ve got to lower costs for people and we’ve got to lower them now,” Beck said in a statement. “Families can’t wait until tax season next year. People voted for action and we aren’t going to waste a second.” Manitoba has suspended its provincial gas tax until the end of this year. Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario have reduced their gas taxes until 2024. Alberta had a fuel tax suspension in 2023 but rates returned this year. During the campaign, Moe said he was opposed to pausing the tax as the revenues help pay for highway repairs. He has said his government’s plan to not charge the federal carbon levy on home heating helps people save money. Moe has also said he understands many voted for change and that his government is prepared to deliver it. At the swearing in of his new cabinet earlier this month, he told reporters a policy that would ban “biological boys” from using school changing rooms with “biological girls” is no longer his first order of business. Moe had proposed the measure on the campaign trail and it wasn’t part of his platform document. He said he misspoke when proposing the plan, and that the province is to consult with school boards to come up with a policy that would support all students. Beck has said the ban would make vulnerable kids more vulnerable . Her party has also opposed a Saskatchewan Party law that requires parental consent if children under 16 want to change their names or pronouns at school. Moe used the Charter’s notwithstanding clause in the legislation to secure it from legal challenge. Also, as we read in Saturday’s, paper the World Health Organization (WHO) reported the number of measles infections worldwide increased by 20% between 2022 and 2023. This most contagious diseases could be prevented with the two doses of vaccine at a very small cost. This is why global health must remain a priority for U.S. funding. We must not loose sight of the fact that supporting global immunization is not a political issue, as it has a long history of bipartisan support and helps everyone both at home and abroad stay safe and healthy. Matt Gaetz (Picture credit: Reuters) Former US representative Matt Gaetz announced on Thursday that he is withdrawing his name from consideration for President-elect Donald Trump's attorney general position , citing ongoing federal sex trafficking investigations that raised concerns about his suitability for the role. Gaetz said that his potential confirmation was becoming a distraction from the important work of the Trump/Vance transition. "I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General," Gaetz posted on the social media platform X. However, this isn't the first time Gaetz has faced controversy. From inviting an internet troll to Trump 's state of the union address to his clashes with White House leader Kevin McCarthy, Gaetz has frequently made headlines. Here are some of his most notable controversies: When Matt invited an internet troll to Trump's state of the union address One of Gaetz's early controversial moments came in 2018 when he invited Charles C Johnson, a notorious internet troll, to attend Trump's first state of the union address. Gaetz explained to The Daily Beast that the invitation happened because Johnson "showed up at my office." Despite backlash, Gaetz defended Johnson—who had previously questioned the death toll of 6 million Jews during the Holocaust—telling Fox Business that Johnson was "not a Holocaust denier" and "not a white supremacist." Backlash over personal attack on Michael Cohen On the eve of Michael Cohen 's testimony before the House Oversight Committee in February 2019, Gaetz launched a sharp personal attack on X. "Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat," Gaetz tweeted. "I wonder if she'll remain faithful when you're in prison. She's about to learn a lot." The tweet sparked outrage among House Democrats, prompting Gaetz to delete it and issue a rare apology. "While it is important to create context around the testimony of liars like Michael Cohen, it was NOT my intent to threaten, as some believe I did," Gaetz wrote, referencing then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s criticism of his comments. "I'm deleting the tweet & I should have chosen words that better showed my intent. I'm sorry." Democrats called for an ethics investigation into the incident. While the House Ethics Committee later cleared Gaetz of wrongdoing, it criticized him for conduct that did not "reflect creditably upon the House of Representatives." The Florida Bar, which also reviewed the matter, reached a similar conclusion, clearing Gaetz while condemning his actions. Sex-trafficking allegations against Gaetz In the final months of the Trump administration, the US justice department launched an investigation into sex-trafficking allegations involving Gaetz and a 17-year-old girl. The investigation, which lasted nearly three years, sought to determine whether Gaetz had paid for the girl's travel in violation of sex trafficking laws, among other allegations. According to Gaetz's colleagues, the congressman had boasted about his sexual encounters and even showed off nude photos of women. However, Gaetz denied all allegations of wrongdoing. His office said in 2023 that prosecutors had informed him he would not face charges. When Gaetz's 'Wingman' was sentenced to 11 years Joel Greenberg , a convicted fraudster who cooperated extensively with the justice department’s sex-trafficking investigation into Gaetz, was sentenced to 11 years in prison by a federal judge in Florida in 2022. Gaetz had referred to Greenberg, the former Seminole County tax collector, as his "wingman." Greenberg had previously pleaded guilty to charges including underage sex trafficking, wire fraud, stalking, identity theft, producing a fake ID, and conspiring to defraud the US government. The revelations surrounding Greenberg sparked widespread media attention, with journalists investigating Gaetz’s Venmo transactions with Greenberg and other reports detailing his behavior in the Florida House, including a claim about a "Harry Potter"-themed sex competition. When ethics committee launched an investigation The House Ethics Committee launched its investigation into Matt Gaetz's sexual misconduct and other allegations in 2021. While the investigation was initially put on hold due to pending charges from the justice department, the committee resumed its inquiry in May 2023. The committee, known for its discretion, publicly stated it was looking into whether Gaetz had been involved in sexual misconduct, illegal drug use, accepted improper gifts, or obstructed investigations. According to The New York Times, lawmakers were ready to vote on releasing their findings on Gaetz's conduct. However, before they could proceed, the Florida Republican unexpectedly resigned. This came shortly after Trump had selected Gaetz as his nominee for attorney general. Tense confrontation between Gaetz and McCarthy Kevin McCarthy, then-House minority leader, was expected to become the next House speaker after Republicans regained control of the chamber in the 2022 midterms. However, Gaetz and a few other lawmakers had different intentions. Tensions peaked in January 2023 after the 14th vote failed, leading to a confrontation where representative Mike Rogers of Alabama, chair of the House Armed Services Committee, had to be physically restrained after lunging at Gaetz. Gaetz's continued opposition to McCarthy had been a major obstacle to McCarthy securing the speaker's position. McCarthy eventually won on the next ballot, and Rogers later apologised for his actions. McCarthy ultimately secured the speaker's position, but Gaetz and a group of conservative lawmakers continued to hold significant leverage over him. Under House rules, a single member could initiate the process to remove the speaker. In October 2023, Gaetz triggered this process by filing a motion to vacate, and with the support of seven other Republicans and House Democrats, McCarthy was ousted. Gaetz claimed his push to remove McCarthy was driven by policy differences, but McCarthy has consistently argued that his removal was personal and motivated by revenge. McCarthy has also called for Gaetz to be jailed. The tension between McCarthy and Gaetz was also evident at the 2024 Republican National Convention when Gaetz interrupted McCarthy during a TV interview, prompting McCarthy’s team to escort him away. "What night are you speaking?" Gaetz asked, disrupting McCarthy’s conversation.NoneOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton point guard Steven Ashworth likely won't play Tuesday in the Bluejays' game against San Diego State in the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas. Ashworth sprained his right ankle late in a loss to Nebraska on Friday, and coach Greg McDermott said he didn't know how long he would be out. “He stepped on a guy's foot on a 3-point shot and you're defenseless in that situation," McDermott said after the game. "He torqued it pretty good.” An athletic department spokesman said Monday that Ashworth's status was doubtful for the game against the Aztecs. Ashworth is Creighton's second-leading scorer with 16 points per game and leads the team with 6.4 assists per game. He also is 23 of 23 on free throws. The list of President-elect Donald Trump's legal cases is shrinking — or being delayed. On Monday, Special Counsel Jack Smith filed a motion to dismiss the Washington, D.C. election subversion case. He also asked a federal appeals court to stop reviewing the classified documents case in Florida. On Tuesday, that court granted dismissal of the case against Trump — though not against other appellees. In dismissing the cases, the Special Counsel cited the Department of Justice's long-standing policy of not prosecuting sitting presidents. "After careful consideration, the Department has determined that OLC's prior opinions concerning the Constitution's prohibition on federal indictment and prosecution of a sitting President apply to this situation and that as a result this prosecution must be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated," Smith wrote in his court filing regarding the election subversion case. "We've used the word unprecedented a lot over the course of the last four years, and yet again this is something that is unprecedented, and Smith himself said this in his motion," former state and federal prosecutor David S. Weinstein told Scripps News. "He took great detail to point out that this was not based on the strength or weakness of the case." In a post on Truth Social , Trump said in part "These cases, like all of the other cases I have been forced to go through, are empty and lawless." RELATED STORY | Special counsel evaluating how to wind down federal cases against Trump Earlier this year, Trump faced four on-going criminal cases. He was convicted in his New York hush money case in May, but sentencing — which was scheduled for this week — has been delayed . After Smith's actions Monday, Trump now faces only the Georgia election interference case. In Georgia, Trump was indicted along with 18 allies, accused of trying to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. But that case is now on hold after the state appeals court unexpectedly removed a December hearing from its calendar. That court will issue a new order on how this case will move forward, but with less than two months before the inauguration, the future of the Georgia and New York hush money cases are still being decided. "The two state cases are likely to recede into the background — at best," former Department of Justice attorney and current partner at Gelber, Schachter & Greenberg, Barbara Llanes, told Scripps News. "We probably won't hear much about these cases following the inauguration of President-elect Trump." Defense attorneys for Trump believe his election victory is enough for the hush money case to be dismissed. They need to file a motion by Dec. 2 making that argument. Then prosecutors have until Dec. 9 to file a rebuttal. They still believe Trump should be sentenced — even if it's after he leaves office. Judge Juan Merchan will then make a decision on how this case should move forward. There's no set date on exactly when he will make that decision.
U.S. says it’s monitoring developments in South KoreaOver 20,000 jobs for working families are at risk in California’s Inland Empire. The reason? Fallout from a regulation raising concerns amongst businesses, labor groups, government officials, and even environmental advocates . Let’s take a step back. Founded over 50 years ago, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has been a world leader in air pollution control, smog reduction, and climate science. And the air across Southern California is better for it. However, CARB’s new “In-Use Locomotive Regulation,” mandating railroads like Union Pacific and BNSF set aside hundreds of millions of dollars today for the technology of the future, risks undermining this precarious balance. While the goal of reducing emissions is commendable, the technology required to meet this mandate is not yet commercially viable to move freight across the country. BNSF has said that its planned $1.5 billion investment in the Barstow International Gateway (BIG) is in jeopardy if the regulation moves forward. As a result, this regulation could jeopardize over 20,000 direct and indirect jobs in the high desert. BNSF plans to develop the 4,500-acre Barstow rail yard, intermodal facility and warehouses for transloading freight project in the next few years, creating thousands of jobs and reducing truck miles traveled from the 130-mile trip from the ports to the Inland Empire along the Interstate 15 corridor. The project would also reduce vehicle miles traveled up and down the Cajon Pass from high desert residents who would have job opportunities closer to home. However, the costs of complying with the regulation and transitioning to non-existent technology would divert capital and resources from railroads, threatening the viability of significant investments like BIG. The potential loss of the BIG project would deal a significant blow to the local economy, particularly to the working families in the region. Moreover, over 86,000 businesses and one in nine jobs in Southern California connected to the San Pedro Bay Port Complex depend on efficient rail connections. Maintaining these connections is essential for the region’s growth and stability and we cannot afford increased traffic congestion and carbon emissions from continuing to force freight onto highways. BIG is also touted to be a state-of-the-art answer to many of the regional and national supply chain issues we’ve all felt over the last several years as our ports have been winning back trade from importers because they are rail connected. While the goals of CARB’s locomotive rule are aligned with our shared commitment to addressing climate change, the regulation’s timing and feasibility are out of step with current technological realities. Our organizations agree with CARB on this: we see a path forward for zero emissions locomotives; we need to convene to align timing, technology, and transition. As Californians, we understand the urgency of transitioning to a zero-emission future, but we must also ensure that our policies support both environmental and economic sustainability. By aligning climate goals with technological capabilities, we can protect jobs, support economic growth, and continue to lead in the fight against climate change while maintaining good jobs for working families in our region.
