The agency’s 2025 budget request contains the word “equity” 829 times, adding onto a dollar total that is already impossible to fully tabulate. HHS employed at least 294 DEI staffers at a cost of $38.7 million last year, according to a new report from OpenTheBooks. There were 247 with salaries above $100,000. It can be difficult to grasp just how bureaucratic HHS’ DEI system truly is. The agency-wide “Office of EEO, Diversity & Inclusion” has 92 employees . Within that are seven more DEI offices for specific health agencies like the Food and Drug Administration. The National Institutes of Health’s “Office of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion” has yet another “Diversity & Inclusion Division,” a marketing team, a customer outreach team and more. The DEI expenses do not stop there. The agency has $5 million budgeted for its “Office of Climate Change and Health Equity” and the “Office of Environmental Justice.” Another $5 million will go toward “diversifying the doula workforce.” The Health Resources and Services Administration received $102 million this year for “training for diversity.” A third of it is to help universities “enhance the academic performance of minorities.” The NIH plans to spend $241 million over nine years on its FIRST program, which pays universities to weigh a candidate’s “commitment to diversity” as equal to their academic ability when hiring scientists. Even the NIH’s $1.2 billion “Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnology” program now has an “emphasis on diversity and inclusion in the research community,” according to its budget request. Background: DEI has also transformed HHS’ seven Offices of Minority Health, which have 207 employees earning $29.4 million in total. Add that to the $38.7 million from the general DEI staff at HHS, and pay is $68 million. The Offices of Minority Health have existed since 1985, but once Biden took office, he directed them to focus on “addressing historical and contemporary injustices.” Quickly, the Center for Disease Control’s Office of Minority Health renamed itself to the Office of Health Equity and “declared racism a serious public health threat.” Critical quote: “In medical research, lives depend on putting excellence first. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), a record-high 79.9 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles during the Thanksgiving travel period. The AAA defines this travel period as the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Day through the following Monday. The 79.9 million projected travelers are up 1.7 million (2.1%) from last year and are 2 million more than the 2019 pre-pandemic level. As one might expect, the most popular mode of transportation will be via automobile, which will account for 89.8% of all travelers. This translates to a record 71.7 million Americans piling into the family truckster and heading out on the open road. The second most popular travel mode (7.3%) is via air. A record-high 5.8 million Americans will fly domestically over the Thanksgiving travel period, up 2% from last year. Thanksgiving drivers this year will benefit from lower gas prices. During last year’s Thanksgiving holiday, the national average for a gallon of regular gas was $3.26, according to AAA data. Currently, the national average is around $3.07 per gallon. Gas prices vary extensively from one state to the next. Even within an individual state, the price you pay at the pump tends to be much more in big cities than in rural areas. Illinois has the 10th-highest average price in the nation at $3.19 per gallon, $0.12 above the national average. In Chicago, the price skyrockets to $3.60 per gallon. Iowa, by comparison, has the 10th-lowest average price at just $2.75 per gallon, a wallet-friendly $0.32 cheaper than the national average. For perspective, the highest prices for a gallon of regular gas in the land go to perennial high-cost states Hawaii ($4.57) followed by California ($4.45). Oklahoma wins the award for the cheapest gas prices at just $2.57 per gallon. Here in the Quad-Cities, as is usually typical, the price you pay for a gallon of gas is heavily dependent on which side of the river you fill up on. On the Illinois side, the average price for a gallon of regular gas is $3.21. However, you can save some big bucks by filling up on the Iowa side of the river, which is $0.39 cheaper at just $2.82 per gallon. If you have a larger size car with an 18-gallon tank, like an SUV, that’s a savings of around $7.02 per fill up. For smaller cars with a 12-gallon tank, you’ll save around $4.68 per fill up. For those of you who will be in the driver’s seat during your Thanksgiving road trip, when you choose to travel is also an important consideration. Artificial intelligence is becoming more commonplace, even in health care, but a new survey shows a big portion of Americans don't trust it. For the last 1.5 years since ChatGPT launched, workers and business leaders have been singing two different tunes about the advent of generative artificial intelligence. From the C-suites, there is excitement and optimism about cost savings and improved productivity—but among the rank and file are rumblings of anxiety and fear. An ADP Research Institute survey of 35,000 workers published in June found that more than 40% believe generative AI will replace some or most of the functions they perform at their companies. Generative AI is a program that uses algorithms trained on large amounts of data to recognize patterns and predict the next sequence of words or sentences when prompted. Leading generative AI products from companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic have proven effective at automating low-level tasks like copywriting, routine administrative work, and more complex data analysis. However, even as C-suite leaders look forward to maintaining their competitive edge with the latest tech, surveys show that much of corporate America may be unprepared to adopt generative AI technology. Drata analyzed a Massachusetts Institute of Technology global poll of more than 300 executives to illustrate companies' preparedness to adopt new AI technologies with the potential to substantially disrupt American jobs. According to the International Monetary Fund's AI Preparedness Index , the U.S. ranks among the top countries prepared to implement AI across its economy. A nation's digital infrastructure, regulations, labor market, and other aspects of the economy are all factored into preparedness. Three in 5 MIT poll respondents believe AI technology will "substantially disrupt" their industries over the next five years. They include leaders in financial services, manufacturing, telecommunications, oil and gas, and media and communications companies. Some U.S. companies invest as if they don't want to be left behind. One study from Rackspace and Amazon Web Services, which itself has the leading market share selling AI services and access to the hardware powering AI applications, found that corporate investment is projected to double this year from 2023 to about $2.5 million. Still, MIT's poll of hundreds of business leaders across industries suggests at least half of the corporate world is still in the trial-and-error phase of implementation, or has no interest in adopting generative AI at all. According to the poll, fewer than 10% of firms surveyed are using generative AI broadly across their organizations. Far more are conducting trials or using the technology in specific areas of the business with plans to expand. The authors of the MIT report find that generative AI is currently most often used to make products in the tech and media industries and that adoption will ramp up next in customer service. Even companies ahead of the curve and flush with capital to invest in AI are still learning from trials. Take McDonald's, for example, which recently pulled back on a pilot program for automating orders at its drive-through restaurants. The technology mistakenly entered orders for hundreds of nuggets and other incorrect menu items, frustrating customers. The largest roadblock cited by companies that aren't confident in their ability to quickly implement AI broadly is a lack of data to train systems customized to their business needs. According to the report's authors, the need for massive amounts of data may be changing how companies think about data and how they collect it from their customers or clients. This hasn't just emerged as a barrier for those that aren't traditionally tech companies but also for the biggest names in AI currently developing leading generative AI models. Another factor stymying deployment is the hardware necessary to store and support the computing required of generative AI models, as is the ability to protect against cybersecurity threats. Outside of IT barriers, the money needed to train and operate the systems is another major obstacle. If generative AI is to carry with it the sea change most business leaders currently believe it will, more of those companies will first need to find investment dollars, data, and ethical frameworks for implementation before anxieties about its impact are proved right or wrong. A double-digit victory in a packed, loud arena. Toughness from a deep, experienced lineup that once again is driven to win an elusive national championship. And, peeking a few seasons ahead, he saw an SDSU team that he views more as a future Pac-12 partner than rival. Behind big man Graham Ike and guard Ryan Nembhard, Gonzaga displayed its size, speed and strength in beating Brian Dutcher's young, hobbled squad 80-67 on Monday night. The Bulldogs returned the favor after SDSU won 84-74 last December at The Kennel in Spokane, which ended their 59-game nonconference winning streak. Both teams reached the Sweet Sixteen last season. Gonzaga is the only team in the nation to reach the Sweet Sixteen the last nine seasons as the Bulldogs extended their streak of NCAA Tournament appearances to 25 straight. Back in Spokane on Wednesday night, the Zags improved to 5-0 by routing Long Beach State 84-41, no doubt firing up expectations in the Lilac City and beyond. The European Union’s harmonized index of consumer prices rose 2.3 percent, up from 2.0% in October, according to EU statistics agency Eurostat. However, worries about growth mean the Dec. 12 ECB meeting is not about whether to cut rates, but by how much. A police constable has allegedly been stabbed while trying to stop a group of men . or signup to continue reading The constable is recovering in hospital, where he is reported to be in a stable condition, and police have arrested three men and charged the alleged attacker. Police went to at 12.30am on November 22 after receiving reports that five men were seen fighting. A hatchback was spotted driving away as police arrived and officers called in support from aviation command to follow the car, police said. Police allege four of the men were in the hatchback and a fifth left the area on foot. The pursuit ended quickly, after the hatchback hit a power pole, and four men allegedly ran from the car. The 34-year-old constable was trying to arrest a 20-year-old man when he was stabbed in the chest, police said. The 20-year-old was charged with wounding a police officer executing duty (reckless as to actual bodily harm), wounding person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, custody of a knife in a public place and assaulting a police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm. He was refused bail to appear in Blacktown Local Court on November 22. An 18-year-old and 21-year-old were also arrested and a crime scene has been established as the investigation continues. On paper, Luigi Mangione had it all: wealth, intellect, athleticism, good looks. But the child of a prominent Maryland family may have spurned it all in a spasm of violence, in a killing that has mesmerized Americans. The 26-year-old was arrested Monday and charged with the murder of Brian Thompson, a health insurance chief executive and father of two who was gunned down in Manhattan last week by someone who, evidence suggests, has endured his own debilitating health crises and grew angry with the privatized US medical system.
