Jim Rossman | Tribune News Service Cord cutting used to refer to abandoning pay TV and putting up an antenna to watch free over-the-air TV. Then cord cutting expanded to include streaming services like Netflix and Hulu and individual streaming sources. Related Articles San Jose Sharks debut catchy sequel video to ‘Holiday Sweater’ Bûche de Noёl: the ultimate holiday dessert Make this pepper-infused vinegar to give as a holiday gift Gift ideas for people planning their next trip Pizza to the rescue during this frantic holiday season Now we also include streaming bundles, like YouTube TV or Hulu Live or DirecTV Stream. These bundled services mimic cable and satellite service, in that they have hundreds of channels. The ease or complexity of the cord cutting experience depends on how you have things set up. Let’s take a look at some gift options for your favorite cord cutter. As far as I know DirecTV is the only streaming bundle service that offers its own hardware. The Gemini Air is a small dongle that plugs into an HDMI port on your TV. It is paired with a remote control to allow for easy navigation. If you were an AT&T U-Verse TV customer, the Gemini Air/DirecTV Stream experience will be very familiar. The Gemini Air is a rarity in that it has number buttons. DirecTV Stream has the option of turning on channel numbers in the guide. I’ve used DirecTV Stream with my Roku TV and with the Gemini Air and the Air makes navigating the huge list of channels much easier. The Gemini Air runs the Google operating system, so you can see and use all your other streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Max and more. You can also load apps and games from the Google Play store. The Gemini Air connects to your home’s Wi-Fi network, and it can stream 4K content to your TV. The remote control has a microphone so you can use your voice to search or interact with Hey Google’s voice assistant. DirecTV Stream customers can get a free Gemini Air from AT&T with their service. Additional units are available for $120. There are lots of smart TV brands. Some run on the Roku operating system, some run Google TV and some use their own brand of smart TV apps. If you’d like to add Google TV to any set, you can get Google’s new TV Streamer (4K) for just $99 from store.google.com. The small device connects to your TV’s HDMI port. It also can connect to your home’s internet via Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet connection. The Google TV interface is not tied to any specific streaming service. You can use any streaming service or app that’s available on the Google Play store. It features a simple remote with voice control and the Google TV Streamer is also a hub and controller for Matter and Thread home devices that work with Google’s home ecosystem. If you use an over-the-air antenna for watching your free local channels, I’m betting you’d like the option to record those channels. TiVo used to be the best/easiest way to record OTA TV, but they’ve discontinued their OTA recorders. A great alternative is from TabloTV, which is a small box that you connect to your TV antenna. The TabloTV does not directly connect to your TV. Instead it connects to your home’s Wi-Fi, and the antenna signal is wirelessly sent to any TV or compatible device in your home. Your TV picks up the signal through a free app, which is compatible with smart TV brands like Samsung, LG, Google TV, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV or Android TV. This method is extremely handy if you don’t want to be bothered running an antenna wire from your attic or roof all the way to your TV. It’s also great if you want to use an indoor antenna, but your TV is not situated in a room that faces the broadcast towers. You can place the antenna and TabloTV where you get the best reception. The TabloTV comes in two models – with either two or four tuners. This means you can record or watch two or four shows at a time. TabloTV has onboard storage to record up to 50 hours of shows, but you can plug in any USB hard drive and expand to record thousands of hours of programming. You can also bundle a TabloTV with an OTA antenna if you like, or you can use your own antenna. Two things to know, there are no ongoing subscription costs for guide data, and there is no streaming service integration. You will need another way to add in streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. TabloTV models start at $99.95 for the two tuner model at tablotv.com. The four-tuner model is $139.95, but they may be on sale during the holidays. ©2024 Tribune Content Agency, LLC.One week into a new Syria, rebels aim for normalcy and Syrians vow not to be silent again DAMASCUS (AP) — A transformation has started to take place in the week since the unexpected overthrow of Syria’s President Bashar Assad. Suddenly in charge, the rebels have been met with a mix of excitement, grief and hope. And so far the transition has been surprisingly smooth. Reports of reprisals, revenge killings and sectarian violence are minimal, looting and destruction has been quickly contained. But there are a million ways it could go wrong. Syria is broken and isolated after five decades of Assad family rule. Families have been torn apart by war, former prisoners are traumatized, and tens of thousands of detainees remain missing. The economy is wrecked, poverty is widespread, inflation and unemployment are high. Corruption seeps through daily life. Christians in Syria mark country's transformation with tears as UN envoy urges an end to sanctions DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — In churches across long-stifled Syria, Christians have marked the first Sunday services since Bashar Assad’s ouster in an air of transformation. Some were in tears, others clasped their hands in prayer. The U.N. envoy for Syria is calling for a quick end to Western sanctions as the country’s new leaders and regional and global powers discuss the way forward. The Syrian government has been under sanctions by the United States, the European Union and others for years as a result of Assad’s brutal response to what began as peaceful anti-government protests in 2011 and spiraled into civil war. US agencies should use advanced technology to identify mysterious drones, Schumer says BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer is urging the federal government to deploy advanced drone-tracking technology following weeks of reported drone sightings in parts of New York and New Jersey that have stirred fear and bewilderment. The New York Democrat is calling on the Department of Homeland Security to use the technology to track drones back to their landing spots. National security officials have said the drones don’t appear to be a sign of foreign interference or a public safety threat. But because they can’t say with certainty who's responsible for the drones, leaders of both parties are demanding better technology and powers to tackle the issue. The GOP stoked fears of noncitizens voting. Cases in Ohio show how rhetoric and reality diverge AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's Republican secretary of state and attorney general sought to reassure voters before the November election that the state's elections were being vigorously protected against the possibility of immigrants voting illegally. That push coincided with a national Republican messaging strategy warning that potentially thousands of ineligible voters would be voting. The officials' efforts in Ohio led to charges against just six noncitizens in a state with 8 million registered voters. That outcome and the stories of some of those now facing charges show the gap both in Ohio and across the United States between the rhetoric about noncitizen voting and the reality that it's rare and not part of a coordinated scheme to throw elections. Storms across US bring heavy snow, dangerous ice and a tornado in California OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Inclement weather has plagued areas of the U.S. in the first half of the weekend, with dangerous conditions including heavy snow, a major ice storm and unusual tornado activity. An ice storm beginning Friday created treacherous driving conditions across Iowa and eastern Nebraska. More than 33 inches of snow was reported near Orchard Park, New York, which is often a landing point for lake-effect snow. On Saturday, a tornado touched down in Scotts Valley, California, causing damage and several injuries. In San Francisco, a storm damaged trees and roofs and prompted a tornado warning, which was a first for a city that has not experienced a tornado since 2005. After a 15-year pause in executions, Indiana prepares to put to death a man who killed 4 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana officials are preparing to execute the state’s first death row inmate in 15 years. Joseph Corcoran was convicted in 1999 in the fatal shootings of his brother and three other men, including his sister’s fiancé. If Corcoran is put to death as scheduled Wednesday it will be the state’s first execution since 2009. Corcoran's attorneys have asked a federal court to stay his execution, arguing it would be unconstitutional because he has a serious mental illness. Indiana officials have refused to discuss how they obtained the sedative used for lethal injection. No media witnesses will be permitted under state law. Israel will close its Ireland embassy over Gaza tensions as Palestinian death toll nears 45,000 DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel says it will close its embassy in Ireland as relations deteriorate over the war in Gaza, where Palestinian medical officials say new Israeli airstrikes have killed over 46 people including children. Israel's decision to close the embassy came in response to what Israel’s foreign minister has described as Ireland's “extreme anti-Israel policies.” Ireland earlier announced that it would recognize a Palestinian state. And the Irish cabinet last week decided to formally intervene in South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, which accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The Palestinian death toll in the war is approaching 45,000. South Korean leaders seek calm after Yoon is impeached SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s opposition leader has offered to work with the government to ease the political tumult, a day after the opposition-controlled parliament voted to impeach conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol over a short-lived attempt to impose martial law. Liberal Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, whose party holds a majority in the National Assembly, urged the Constitutional Court to rule swiftly on Yoon’s impeachment and proposed a special council for policy cooperation between the government and parliament. Yoon’s powers have been suspended until the court decides whether to remove him from office or reinstate him. If Yoon is dismissed, a national election to choose his successor must be held within 60 days. Small businesses say cautious shoppers are seeking 'cozy' and 'festive' this holiday season With a late Thanksgiving, the holiday shopping season is five days shorter than last year, and owners of small retail shops say that people have been quick to snap up holiday décor early, along with gifts for others and themselves. Cozy items like sweaters are popular so far. Businesses are also holding special events to get shoppers in the door. But there’s little sense of the freewheeling spending that occurred during the pandemic. Overall, The National Retail Federation predicts retail sales in November and December will rise between 2.5% and 3.5% compared with same period a year ago. Pope Francis makes 1st papal visit to France's Corsica awash in expressions of popular piety AJACCIO, Corsica (AP) — Pope Francis on the first papal visit ever to the French island of Corsica on Sunday called for a dynamic form of laicism, promoting the kind of popular piety that distinguishes the Mediterranean island from secular France as a bridge between religious and civic society. The one-day visit to Corsica’s capital Ajaccio, birthplace of Napoleon, on Sunday is one of the briefest of his papacy beyond Italy’s borders, just about nine hours on the ground, including a 40-minute visit with French President Emmanuel Macron. It is the first papal visit ever to the island, which Genoa ceded to France in 1768 and is located closer to the Italian mainland than France.First-ever athlete and fan-owned network boasts 2,200 Fan Owners and 70+ superstar athlete investors and partners by the likes of Chris Paul , Travis Kelce , Dwayne Wade , Chiney Ogwumike, Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard , Natasha Cloud , Alysha Clark , Carmelo Anthony , and many more LOS ANGELES , Dec. 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- PlayersTV , the first athlete and fan-owned media company, today announced the acquisition of Cloud Media Center , an AI-driven sports adtech and media distribution company. Like every team in the National Hockey League, the Vancouver Canucks have played their final game before the short holiday break. Per the AHL transactions page , the Canucks have papered down forwards Phillip Di Giuseppe , Max Sasson , and Linus Karlsson bringing their roster down a minimum of 18 skaters and two goalies. The roster moves will give Vancouver a relatively large window of salary cap relief despite all three players earning below $900K on their current contracts. The Canucks don’t play until Saturday when they take on the Seattle Kraken meaning all three players will likely be recalled then. The veteran Di Giuseppe played in three games for Vancouver during his recent call-up from December 17th to today, tallying two assists and 12 hits while averaging 12:39 of ice time. He’ll likely spend more time on the Canucks roster for the rest of the season after returning from an injury earlier in the year. Di Giuseppe is in the final season of a two-year, $1.55MM agreement signed with Vancouver and can bring quality defensive play toward the bottom of the lineup. Sasson, the second forward included in today’s transaction, is starting to rack up playing time in the NHL. The former Western Michigan University standout has scored one goal and five points in 12 games for the Canucks this season and has seen his ice time climb to or near 13 minutes in three of his last four games. There’s a legitimate chance his playing days in the AHL are over for the foreseeable future unless Vancouver makes a notable outside addition to their bottom six. Karlsson also sustained an early-season injury keeping him out of the lineup for both Vancouver and the Abbotsford Canucks for much of the 2024-25 regular season. He’s gotten off to a hot start in Abbotsford scoring five goals and six points in seven games but he failed to find the scoresheet during his pair of contests in the NHL. He’s an interesting offensive weapon Vancouver could toy with toward the bottom of their forward grouping given that Karlsson is only a year removed from scoring 23 goals and 60 points in 60 AHL games. In addition, the EasyBiz Bundles provide faster onboarding and an easier experience for the merchant, making them more visible to their customers. With these innovations, GCash is strengthening its drive toward financial inclusion, empowering Filipinos from all walks of life with the tools they need to succeed in business. With SoundPay, sellers receive an immediate and audible alert upon successful payment– this allows them to verify transactions in real-time without disrupting the service flow compared to the old manual method of going through steps to check if payment has been received. “This level of automation and simplicity not only elevates the customer experience but also allows business owners to focus on growth rather than struggling with hundreds of daily manual verification of payment. In addition, these devices are portable, making them ideal for small retailers who offer delivery services,” said Ren-Ren Reyes, president and CEO of G-Xchange Inc. “Our goal with Scan-to-Pay and SoundPay is to redefine MSME payment solutions, making them accessible, adaptable, and directly suited to small business needs.” The country’s largest cashless ecosystem presently has 6 million users who utilize the leading finance app for business. In only three months since the launch of SoundPay and the EasyBiz Bundles in August, GCash for Business has on boarded 385 doors across 429 devices for DT-SME and Enterprise with 60 doors across 102 devices. “The success of Scan-to-Pay since August has revolutionized the way small businesses transact with customers, giving them the same benefits of point-of-sales or POS technology used by big retail corporations. With SoundPay, every Scan-to-Pay transaction can easily be confirmed by the seller through its very audible sound notification, providing them the confidence to transact more seamlessly,” added Reyes. Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) had traditionally been underserved or unserved with financial services and business solutions due to complex documentation and capital expenditures that only large corporations could afford or provide. To address this gap, GCash created the EasyBiz Bundles, offering a complete set of business solutions for MSMEs and recently, an affordable alternative that provides comparable functionality to traditional POS systems used by big names in the retail industry. With already 445 merchants onboarded with SoundPay, GCash for Business is expected to boost the growth of MSMEs and the Philippine economy. For more information, visit https://www.gcash.com . NPFL: Champions Rangers happy to end 2024 with win

Stories that dominate the pages of this newspaper are often negative. So many articles in the region are about controversies and bleak stories about crime, budget woes and political bickering. From murder and mayhem to fatal car crashes and fires, bad news often dominates our headlines. Throughout the year, we report a lot of good stories as well. As we celebrate the holiday season, we reflect on some of the positive news that appeared this year in our paper. Gilmartin returns to Scranton a hero Triumph emerged from tragedy in March when Scranton police detective Kyle Gilmartin was discharged from a Philadelphia-area rehabilitation hospital and returned to Scranton seven weeks after he was shot twice in the head in the line of duty. Hundreds of supporters and well-wishers gathered at Scranton police headquarters to welcome Gilmartin home. “That night I was just an ordinary man who was placed in an extraordinary circumstance in which I faced evil and won due to the grace of God,” Gilmartin said. “My family and I are beyond proud of Northeast Pennsylvania and how its people responded to this senseless tragedy. We thank you for the prayers, which have worked, as well as the donations which will be needed greatly in the future.” Gilmartin and two other detectives were working to prevent a gang-related shooting early Jan. 11 when a suspect fired five rounds from point-blank range into their unmarked police sedan. Two of the rounds hit Gilmartin above his right eye before a colleague returned fire and downed the suspect, who was arrested. Yuengling celebrates 195th with Stars & Stripes celebration Yuengling, the oldest brewery in America, hosted its annual Stars & Stripes Summer Celebration in Pottsville in July with a free concert by country music star Lee Brice. Thousands flocked to the city for the daylong celebration, which included the 90-minute concert and a fireworks show. The event coincided with the brewery’s 195th anniversary and supported the brewery’s longtime partner Team Red, White & Blue, a nonprofit that supports better mental, emotional and physical health among America’s veterans. Brice, who previously performed at the event in 2022, said he was glad to be back. “The fans here in Pottsville really know how to have a good time,” he said prior to the concert. “Pottsville is a special place for us, and we look forward to being here.” Wawa arrives in Luzerne County, more stores planned for NEPA After years of waiting, Luzerne County finally got a modern Wawa store – and several others are on the way. A Wawa convenience store and gas station celebrated a grand opening this month in the Union Center Plaza along Route 309 in Wilkes-Barre Twp., the former KMart Plaza. Shortly after, a new Aldi discount grocery store opened in the plaza and a Cloud 9 car wash will open there next. In addition, Wawa broke ground on a new store in Dallas Twp., submitted plans for one in Plains Twp. near the Mohegan Pennsylvania casino, and is eyeing one for Market Street in Kingston. Wawa is in the planning stages of three stores in Lackawanna County, off Cold Spring Road in Dickson City, on Meredith Street in Carbondale Twp. and at Moosic Street and Meadow Avenue in Scranton. Elsewhere in the region, Wawa has stores in Kidder Twp. in Carbon County and Blakeslee in Monroe County. Hazle Twp. Little Leaguer meets the majors A badly injured Hazle Twp. Little League player had a dream come true this summer by getting to meet members of his favorite team, the Houston Astros, and its star player, Jose Altuve. The young player, Aiken, badly injured his face and lost several teeth when he rammed into an outfield fence to catch a fly ball for the final out in a game. Three weeks later, the recovering 12-year-old found himself at an Astros game against the Philadelphia Phillies. After weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations, the Astros organization invited Aiken and his group to the field for batting practice to meet some players who heard of his ordeal. Altuve was scheduled for a day off, but came out to the field and surprised Aiken with a signed bat, baseballs and a card. The Astros later posted photos of the experience on Facebook, writing “Moments that matter most.” NEPA’s new ‘pizza trail’ Following the lead of Lackawanna County, Luzerne County’s tourism bureau launched its own “pizza trail” competition this year. More than 40 pizza shops from Pittston to Wilkes-Barre to Hazleton signed up to be part of the contest to see who could visit all participating businesses. “Everyone knows that Northeastern Pennsylvania has the best pizza in the country, and many of those great pizzerias are right here in Luzerne County,” said Alan K. Stout, executive director of Visit Luzerne County. “How many times have we all heard from people that have moved out of the area say that the first thing they do when they come home for a visit is order a pizza? They often say that they just can’t find great pizza outside of this area.” Nearly 60 pizza places participated in the Lackawanna County pizza trail that was launched several years ago by the Lackawanna County Visitors Bureau, which called it “the cheesiest tour you’ll ever take.”How can the Baltic states be defended by hybrid threats?

The mysterious drone sightings across several counties in New Jersey during recent weeks were launched by an Iranian “mothership,” according to a congressman who spoke to Fox News on Wednesday. And while it seems like a completely outlandish claim given everything we know publicly right now, this isn’t some random crank on the internet. It’s an elected leader in the U.S. who sits on powerful committees and claims to have sources who can be trusted. The mysterious flying vehicles have blinking lights and have sometimes been described as being as large as a car. Walt Miller, chief of police in New Jersey’s Evesham township, gave a press conference Friday where he said cops have been flooded with calls about the flying objects. But it’s unclear to most people who might be behind them. At least it was unclear until Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a Republican from New Jersey, said Wednesday that he knows for certain what they are. Rep. Drew is a member of the U.S. House Transportation Subcommittee on Aviation and says he has reliable information that these drones are from a hostile source. “I’ve gotten to know people and from very high sources, very qualified sources, very responsible sources, I’m going to tell you the real deal,” Van Drew said, prefacing his remarks on Fox News while talking with Harris Faulkner. “Iran launched a mothership, probably about a month ago, that contains these drones. That mothership is off the east coast of the United States of America. They’ve launched drones—this is everything that we can see and hear. Again these are from high sources, I don’t say this lightly.” Rep. Van Drew then goes on to admit there was a “probability” whatever these flying objects are could’ve been American, either as hobbyists or U.S.-government run, but he insisted, “we know it’s not our own government.” “The third possibility was somebody, an adversarial country, doing this. Know that Iran made a deal with China to purchase drones, motherships, and technology in order to go forward,” said Rep. Van Drew. “The sources I have are good. They can’t reveal who they are because they are speaking to me in confidentiality. These drones should be shot down.” But as insistent as Rep. Van Drew was that he knew where these drones were coming from, he did eventually start to hedge that it merely “could be” a mothership from Iran. “Whether it was some crazy hobbyist that we can’t imagine, or whether it is Iran—and I think it very possibly could be—they should be shot down. We are not getting the full deal and the military is on alert with this,” Rep. Van Drew said. Rep. Van Drew has called for the drones to be shot down. But the Pentagon denied that these are Iranian drones during a press conference on Wednesday. “At this time we have no evidence that these activities are coming from a foreign entity or the work of an adversary,” said Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh . “We’re going to continue to monitor what is happening, but, you know, at no point were our installations threatened when this activity was occurring.” Asked by a reporter specifically about the Iranian mothership idea, Singh reiterated, “There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there’s no so-called mothership launching drones towards the United States.” Experts aren’t quite sure what to make of wild claims that these could be from a hostile nation. As several people have pointed out on social media, these flying objects would likely be intercepted in some way rather quickly if they really were being operated by a foreign government. “Regarding the New Jersey mystery drones that are appearing over military bases (among other locations), I think it’s rather key to note they aren’t being shot down or intercepted, even though military bases would be permitted to do this for security reasons,” Faine Greenwood, a researcher who’s worked for years on UAVs, wrote Tuesday on Bluesky . Whatever happens, it’ll be interesting to see whether anyone in the intelligence community leaks any info to support any of Rep. Van Drew’s claims. Because as of right now we only have his word on the topic. And while it’s entirely possible the Pentagon is lying about something, it would be odd if these were Iranian and nobody came forward to leak that very important information. “This isn’t just Jeff Van Drew... oh let’s you know let’s get on Harris’s show and say something outrageous,” Rep. Van Drew said of himself. “I’m telling you the straight deal from very high-positioned individuals who are telling me this. And the bottom line is they’re launching them. They are across the country.” Van Drew even insisted that the U.S. government doesn’t have anything so advanced, another claim that seems a bit outrageous. “We don’t even have anything like this. Our government, and certainly our hobbyists don’t. So think about it. Not only do I have the information but it’s also common sense,” Rep. Van Drew said.

Read unlimited articles for free today: Already have an account? The last six years have landed Canadian Kurtis Rourke firmly in the U.S. college football limelight. The 24-year-old Oakville, Ont., native will lead the upstart Indiana Hoosiers (11-1) into South Bend, Ind., to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11-1) on Dec. 20 to open American university football’s expanded playoff bracket. Rourke transferred to Indiana last December to boost his NFL draft stock after five years at Ohio University, where he began as a backup to his older brother, Nathan, then captured the 2022 MAC offensive player of the year award despite suffering a season-ending knee injury before heading to Indiana after the 2023 season. A win over Notre Dame would extend Indiana’s stellar campaign while a loss would mark the end of Rourke’s collegiate career. “Having six years is something not many people can say,” Rourke told Canadian reporters Wednesday. “(It has been) very much a roller-coaster but I’m just grateful. “I’ve had four surgeries in college and only missed a handful of games. That’s the biggest thing I come back to, that I’ve been so lucky to still play and have an opportunity to play (maybe) four more games and hopefully at a professional level.” The six-foot-five, 223-pound Rourke will be eligible for the ’25 NFL draft. Rourke has played a big role in Indiana — traditionally known as a basketball school — emerging as a Big Ten contender in head coach Curt Cignetti’s first season. Rourke completed 202-of-287 passes (70.4 per cent) for 2,827 yards with 27 TDs and just four interceptions in 11 games and last week was named a finalist for the Manning Award, given annually to American college football’s top quarterback. The only blemish on Indiana’s record was a 38-15 loss to Ohio State before 105,751 spectators in Columbus, Ohio, on Nov. 23. Rourke was eight-of-18 passing for 68 yards in that contest and sacked five times. It’s that experience Rourke and the Hoosiers are drawing upon as they prepare to visit Notre Dame Stadium, which has a seating capacity of roughly 77,000 but held 84,000 spectators for a 2018 Garth Brooks concert. “I don’t know if it will be as crazy or as hostile an environment as Ohio State ... but I do expect it to be a pretty good environment,” Rourke said. “We have some plans in place with the silent count if we need at any point to go to ... but ultimately just learning from the experience of Ohio State to handle it individually as well as an offence.” Former CFL player Tino Sunseri is Indiana’s quarterback coach/co-offensive co-ordinator. Sunseri spent three seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (2013-15), winning a Grey Cup as a rookie. Reaching the expanded playoff format in Cignetti’s first season is a huge accomplishment for Indiana. But the school reportedly added 31 players via the transfer portal before the 2024 campaign. When asked how he appealed to incoming players, Cignetti said, “It’s pretty simple, I win. Google me.” Cignetti came to Indiana after posting a 52-9 record over five seasons at James Madison. Rourke said Hoosiers’ players draw inspiration from their brash head coach. “Seeing your head coach on a national stage say what he said, ‘Google me,’ ... that just shows how confident he is in himself and the coaches,” Rourke said. “And that just makes us feel like, ‘Yeah, we’re coming along with you coach.’ “As the season went on we were like, ‘Yeah, we can do this.'” Rourke suffered a right thumb injury that required surgery in Indiana’s 56-7 win over Nebraska on Oct. 19. Fortunately, he missed only one start (31-17 victory over Washington) and returned to throw four TD passes in 47-10 decision over Michigan State on Nov. 2. “My thumb feels 100 per cent now,” Rourke said. “It was hard missing that Washington game ... but I knew the team would have my back.” It’s no surprise Rourke has leaned upon his brother throughout his college tenure. The two are very close and Rourke said he began playing quarterback after watching Nathan do so growing up. Nathan Rourke rejoined the Lions in August after spending time in the NFL with Jacksonville, New England, Atlanta and the New York Giants. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. “We’ve been able to talk about ball but (also) life,” the junior Rourke said. “Just having someone who’s done it, who’s been through the college experience, been through the NFL experiences and now the CFL to learn from and also bounce questions off him, it’s been quite beneficial to have him in my corner.” Rourke has hired an agent — Octagon’s Casey Muir — and will work out this off-season in Fort Myers, Fla. As of Wednesday, Rourke said he’s not been invited to the NFL combine, which begins Feb. 27 in Indianapolis. “I’d love to get an invite to the combine,” he said. “That was one of my goals, honestly, when I got to college, which seems forever ago. “That would be awesome.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 11, 2024. A local Secret Santa is giving $1 million to deserving people in eastern Idaho this holiday season and the East Idaho News elves are helping out. Every day from now until the end of the year, we’ll be posting a Secret Santa surprise, and today we are surprising a teacher named Alesha. She is very involved in the Idaho Falls theatre community. Not only is Alesha fun onstage, but she is also a joy to be around offstage. She is infectiously funny, a team player, incredibly supportive and loving, and has the gift of making you feel that you are way more important and interesting than you actually are. The awesome thing about this is that she’s an elementary school teacher and works every day to help her students feel that way about themselves. Alesha is always coming up with fun and insightful ways to teach them. She cares if they feel valued and seen. She consistently shows up to their games, performances, and anything else that is important to them. Her students invite her to these things because they want her to share in their lives and they’ve come to support her when she’s in shows. Alesha’s furnace recently broke and this is a big hardship on her on a teacher’s salary at this time of year. The East Idaho News elves were asked to surprise Alesha with an early Christmas gift.
