Following a busy and well-attended trio of meetings in the autumn about Black Isle hospitals pre-NHS, the amazing archaeological discoveries of High Pasture Cave on Skye and Dingwall’s diaspora around the world, Cromarty History Society members enjoyed a fascinating talk from Evanton’s Andrew Newton on the Egyptian, Greek and Roman origins of much of today’s medicine . That was followed by mulled wine, Christmas cake and mince pies. Finally, on April 15 at 7.30pm, Dr Jim Mackay will explain The Marriage Lintels and Date Stones Close to You , which we all see as we go about our daily business but don’t always understand. There are many such stones on old buildings across the Highlands. Meetings are followed by refreshments and chat and all are held at the Victoria Hall in Cromarty. Each meeting costs £5 but £15 membership will cover the rest of the meetings until April 2025. The society has members from across the area and visitors are welcome. General Motors, after pouring billions of dollars into its Cruise robotaxi unit over the past eight years, said it’s ending the subsidiary’s stand-alone efforts and will combine it with in-house efforts to develop autonomous driving technologies for personal vehicles. The Detroit-based automaker said it will no longer fund Cruise’s robotaxi work as it will take too long and cost too much to scale the business to compete with competitors it didn’t identify. Presumably, its biggest challenge is catching up with Waymo, which is carrying hundreds of thousands of riders in its robotaxis every week and is about to expand the service to Miami, Austin and Atlanta. “This is the latest in a series of decisions that GM has announced that underscore our focus on having the right technology for the future of our company and the industry,” Mary Barra, GM’s chair and CEO, said on a conference call. “GM made this decision to refocus our strategy because we believe in the importance of driver assistance and autonomous driving technology in our vehicles.” “Cruise has been an early innovator in autonomy, and the deeper integration of our teams, paired with GM’s strong brands, scale, and manufacturing strength, will help advance our vision for the future of transportation.” Cruise, acquired by GM in 2016, was among the best-funded robotaxi companies, raising more than $8 billion, including investments from SoftBank and Honda. For years it was locked in a tight competition with Alphabet’s Waymo to be a dominant player in the emerging autonomous vehicle space. However the company struggled to regain its footing after an October 2023 accident when one of its robotaxis struck and dragged a woman in San Francisco, shortly after the company had opened up the robotic ride service to the public. Cruise recently announced plans to work with Uber and was focused on rebuilding trust in the brand, but those efforts were not seen as sufficient by GM’s management. The move is reminiscent of a 2022 decision by Ford and Volkswagen to shut down Argo AI , their joint-venture autonomous driving unit, which like Cruise had also raised billions from the automakers. Ford CEO Jim Farley at the time also said funding a robotaxi startup was too costly and would take too much time. Uber, which now partners with Waymo in some cities, shut down its efforts to develop robotaxis in 2020, months after a fatal accident in which one of its test vehicles killed a pedestrian in suburban Phoenix. Barra made no mention of the Cruise accident, instead focusing on the need for GM to use its funds more efficiently. “Given the considerable time and expense required to scale a robotaxi business in an increasingly competitive market, combining forces would be more efficient and therefore consistent with our capital allocation priorities,” she said. Though Tesla’s Elon Musk has set a goal for his company to be a leader in robotaxi technology, it hasn’t yet demonstrated the ability to achieve that , at least not in the near term. Instead, Waymo appears to be in a unique position of being the only large-scale player in the robotaxi space. The company last month said it’s carrying more than 150,000 paying customers in Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles, a number that will likely jump dramatically next year as it enters new cities and expands its vehicle fleet. So far, it’s also managed to avoid any serious accidents that could slow its growth plans. Amazon’s Zoox unit, which is preparing to launch a robotaxi service in Las Vegas, for now appears to be one of Waymo’s few U.S. competitors though its scale is much smaller. GM owns about 90% of Cruise and will acquire the remaining shares in it from other investors after receiving approval from the Cruise board. It expects to save more than $1 billion a year after completing the restructuring plan next year. When you get close to an inscription (or any photo-worthy scene), you’ll see a camera icon pop up in the upper left corner of your screen. Pressing up on the D-pad equips your camera, and then holding the left trigger brings it to your eye. From there, you just have to frame the photo the way the game wants. Luckily, you’ve got a guide. Unluckily, the game doesn’t explain that guide. When you’re looking through the viewfinder, you’ll see two sets of brackets: one thin and solid white, and the other fuzzy. Your goal is to get them both lined up. If the fuzzy brackets are inside of the solid ones, that means your subject is too small and you need to either get closer or zoom in. If they’re outside, that means the subject is too big and you need to back up or zoom out. Once you get the brackets aligned, you’ll get a take picture prompt on the screen. Follow the road through the big doors to the next courtyard. Head through the second door on the right — it’s got a gate you can push through. Inside, you’ll see some hedges that are being trimmed. Head all the way to the back of this area and look to the right to find the first Strange Inscription . Strange Inscription 2 location Head back out of the hedge area and take a right (heading west). Go through the doors to return to Belvedere Courtyard . Straight ahead of you, there’ll be a fountain. Loop around to the right side of the fountain to find the next Strange Inscription . In our experience, this one is the trickiest to get framed correctly. You’ll probably have to zoom way in, and then take a couple of steps back to get it lined up. Strange Inscription 3 location From the fountain, head to the south end of Belvedere Courtyard. The Blackshirts are building a stage of some sort there. Head to the right side of the stage and sneak around to the back. Use your whip to climb to the top of the scaffolding. When you reach the balcony, turn to the right and follow it over to find Strange Inscription 3 . Strange Inscription 4 location Turn around from Strange Inscription 3 and head to the far side of the balcony. There’s a Blackguard to deal with — if he’s sitting on the railing, you can always just click the right thumbstick to push him off (it’s super satisfying). Use your whip to climb the scaffolding. At the top, turn to the right to find an open window. Hop into the hallway there — this is where you’ll find the “House of God” mystery — and continue out a window on the other side. This will bring you to the Borgia Courtyards . Turn right to find more scaffolding to climb. Climb that, and the final Strange Inscription will be a little to the left.
