According to industry group The Toy Association, nearly 80 percent of U.S. toys are manufactured in China , one of the countries the President-elect has threatened to target with immediate charges on exports. Trump has said he would impose a 10 percent universal tariff on foreign imports, and last month floated the idea of an additional 60 to 100 percent tariff on goods specifically from China . But experts have warned that the tariffs are likely to have a negative effect on shoppers and the economy. Though the levy is paid by the importer, much of the tax is ultimately handed off to consumers in the form of higher prices. Research conducted by the National Retail Federation (NRF) examined the impact of the proposed tariffs on apparel, furniture, household appliances, footwear, travel goods, and toys. The NRF found that the tariffs would reduce the American consumer’s spending power by up to $78 billion every year the tariffs are in place. They would be paying $8.8 billion to $14.2 billion more for toys, according to the NRF data. This may have serious consequences for independent toy sellers. Jennifer Bergman, the owner of New York City’s West Side Kids told CBS News that about 90 percent of the toys she sells are made in China. She said that having to drive her prices up may result in a loss of customers and business that would cause her to close her doors. "It would be heartbreaking," she said. "It would be a real loss for the community. It would be a real loss for me. I can’t really imagine not being here." Experts at the Peterson Institute for International Economics have similarly warned that a 60 percent tariff on Chinese exports would be a “major shock to international goods markets” – and the toy market specifically. "While toys seem like products for which substitute sellers would be readily available, China maintains a dominant position in toy production for several reasons, including its not-easily-reproduced capacity to produce materials that meet US product safety standards," they wrote in a blog post earlier this month.

Sadly, that is almost meant literally as local shelters throughout the city of Norwalk and Huron County are reaching, or at, capacity nearly all the time, and desperately are asking for help. One group, called the Firelands Community Cat Coalition , is working to help control the feline population before the litters are born, reducing the potential population by millions. The group’s mission is to serve the free roaming and feral cats throughout the Firelands community. Through its trap, neuter, return efforts, it reduces future litters and feline disease. The Firelands Community Cat Coalition is a voice for the abandoned while educating the community on humanely reducing cat overpopulation. The group started four years ago as it saw a need in Huron and Erie counties for reducing the cat population. Volunteers work to educate the community on the importance of spaying and neutering community cats. According to Paula Freehling, a volunteer for the group, it’s simple math. “There’s not enough adoptions out there to match the overwhelming cat population,” Freehling said. “There’s so many community stray cats just running around that we’re trying to reduce that population. “We have on our website a form that people can fill out to give us their address and how many cats are in the area that need help with getting trapped, neutered and returned. For instance, there’s one community where they have 30 cats running around that are not fixed. “Or, some people move and don’t take the cats with them and they just put them outside. You have a few of these cats that are not fixed, and they can produce so many kittens a year. “We go out and we give them humane live traps and we teach them how to trap feed. They’re usually a caretaker who’s already feeding the cats; that’s where the cats are hanging around. “We teach them to put the food in the trap with the trap door held open and they do this for a few days. The cats start to think, ‘OK I’ll go inside this trap now to get my food’ and when we are ready, when we have a vet appointment to transport the cats to the vet, then we let the caretaker know, OK we can take the cats.” They will then spring the door so that when the cats come in to eat that evening the trap is sprung, Freehling said. “And now, we’ve got our cats ready to go see the vet in the morning,” she said. The Firelands Community Cat Coalition takes care of the trapped cats overnight at a small facility then sends them off to the veterinary clinic. After they are spayed or neutered, the coalition monitors the feline’s health, feeds them and sends them back to the location where they were captured the next day. Currently, the group is transporting the captured cats twice per month to a clinic in Toledo and can fix about a dozen cats per month, Freehling said. Unfortunately, there are no closer veterinary clinics that are able to offer spaying or neutering services at a price the group is able to afford or are simply not taking on new patients, she said. The group is desperate to find more local vets to assist in their efforts, Freehling said. There is a waiting list of more than 500 cats in Huron and Erie counties alone, she said. The coalition has been able to negotiate rates with the Toledo clinic for between $40 and $60 per cat, although folks having it done privately can be charged $300 or more. This cost is why many pet owners choose not to have their cats fixed, Freehling said. “There’s a big need out there for low-cost services,” Freehling pleaded. “Even just for the public to take their house cats. That’s why we’re seeing people with so many cats out in the public that aren’t fixed because it’s a deterrent for them. They’re saying I’m not going to fix my cat, I’ll just let them be an indoor-outdoor cat and things will be fine. “And that’s why we’re having more babies. We try to educate the community on the importance of spay neuter and how when you have a cat neutered it will impact their behavior so there’s less fighting in the community,” she added. “Sometimes you’ll hear a lot of cats fighting and if you can get them fixed it cuts down on fighting and the vets that we take the cats to, we also get them vaccinated as well so then there’s less disease out in the community.” Freehling said she got involved with the group simply as a volunteer when she ran across a social media post asking for volunteers. She reiterated that they are 100 percent donation based and are in great need of donations and volunteers. She said the group urgently needs things like cat food, bedding, pee pads and treats. Any donations toward veterinary bills, Freeling said, are greatly appreciated. The group will hold a fundraiser in Norwalk in April at the Elk’s Lodge. Mumbai: A 50% drop in procurement prices of onions in the last 15 days has led to major losses for farmers. Prices have dropped from ₹ 3,600 a quintal on December 12 to ₹ 1,725 a quintal on Monday. Farmers associations have now demanded the removal of the 20% export duty to push exports. The rise in the fresh harvesting of late kharif onion, coupled with the duty on exports, have led to the drastic fall in prices. The release of the stock procured in the past by the government agencies NAFED and National Consumers Federation of India, which have flooded the markets, has also led to the price drop. “The input cost of onion per acre is ₹ 80,000. Farmer are getting just ₹ 60,000, leading to losses of ₹ 20,000 per acre. The central government should immediately lift the export duty as this is not the time to retain it because there is no shortage and the rates have crashed,” said Bharat Dighole, founder president of Maharashtra state onion producer farmers organisation. While Maharashtra is the largest onion-producing state in the country, Lasalgaon in the Nashik district has one of Asia’s largest wholesale markets for it. The Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) saw an inflow of 2,500 quintal late kharif onion daily over the last 15 days, which fetched an average cost of ₹ 1,725 per quintal. When the crop is sold at ₹ 3000 a quintal, the farmers get some profit, said Dighole. The anger among onion farmers was palpable when fisheries and port minister Nitesh Rane addressed a rally in Baglan in Nashik on Monday. A farmer, identified as Mahindra Surayawanshi, put an onion garland on Rane, an act that led to him being questioned for several hours by the police. Amid the fall in prices, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar last week urged the BJP-led Centre to remove the 20 per cent export duty on onions to provide relief to farmers grappling with plummeting prices. The central government had imposed 40% export duty on onion on October 28, 2023, which was reduced to 20% on May 4 this year in the middle of the Lok Sabha election to pacify the anger among farmers in Maharashtra. Ajit Nawale, national joint secretary, Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha (ABKS), said the falling price of onions was the result of flip-flop in government policies and religious political agenda affecting exports. “Many Gulf countries that have been major importers of the Indian onion haves stopped taking onion from us, because of the religious agenda of Indian government. Rampant change in the export import policies have majorly hit our credibility in the international market.
