Google has named Debbie Weinstein, a senior executive for the tech giant in the UK, as its president in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Until now, Ms Weinstein has been the US firm’s vice president and managing director in the UK and Ireland, having previously worked at Unilever. She said her focus will be on “unlocking AI-powered growth for everyone”, calling the current AI boom a “pivotal” time for the tech giant. Google has joined many of its rivals in launching a string of high-profile generative AI products in recent times, led by the firm’s generative AI-powered assistant, Gemini. “Europe, the Middle East and Africa is an amazingly diverse and varied region, but the enormous growth opportunity that AI can create is universal,” she said. “My focus will be on unlocking that AI-powered growth for everyone – users, businesses, partners and governments across every part of the region. “I’m excited to be stepping into this role at a pivotal time, in a company where I’ve spent the last ten years and leading a region where I’ve spent much of my life.” Google employs more than 29,000 people across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with 56 offices across 35 countries in those regions working on many of the firm’s largest products, including its search engine, the Android mobile operating system and its Chrome web browser. Its AI research arm, at Google DeepMind, is also led from London. Philipp Schindler, Google senior vice president and chief business officer, said: “This is the AI era and we are only just beginning to see its transformative impact on business and society. “In such a pivotal moment for technology, I’m thrilled we’ve appointed a visionary leader to be our President of Google EMEA. “Debbie brings a track record of unlocking growth that benefits everyone, alongside the passion and focus needed to help our customers succeed, as we bring the best of Google’s Gemini-era to everyone across EMEA.”‘Victory of PDA’s unity’: Akhilesh on SP retaining 2 Maharashtra seatsNo. 4-ranked South Dakota stuns top-ranked Bison with last-second touchdownlol646 login

‘American Idol’ Alum Caleb Kennedy Pleads Guilty, Gets 8 Years in Prison After Fatal DUI Crash

( MENAFN - AFP) Asian traders shifted tentatively Tuesday as they battled to track another record on Wall Street owing to fresh China-US worries, while the euro extended losses on concerns of Political and economic upheaval in France. A tech-led rally in the Dow and S&P 500 helped New York Stocks to a strong start to the month, having enjoyed a healthy November on hopes that US President-elect Donald trump will usher in more business-friendly measures. Investors are also looking ahead to the release of US jobs data at the end of the week which could play a key role in the federal Reserve's decision on whether to cut interest rates again. The mixed performance in Asia followed a recent run-up that was helped Monday by manufacturing activity data suggesting China's economic struggles may be coming to an end. In early trade on Tuesday, Tokyo, Sydney, Seoul, Singapore and Manila were all higher but Hong Kong, Shanghai and Wellington retreated. Fuelling uncertainty was news that Washington had announced new export restrictions taking aim at Beijing's ability to make advanced semiconductors in the latest volley in the tech standoff between the world's leading economies. The moves step up existing US efforts to tighten curbs on exports of state-of-the-art AI chips to China. Beijing hit back, saying the United States "abuses export control measures" and has "hindered normal economic and trade exchanges". The mood was also tinted by worries over Trump's second term in the White House, particularly after he warned last month that he would hit China, Canada and Mexico with heavy tariffs. "Although recent (manufacturing) data revealed that November saw the fastest expansion in factory activity in months -- likely boosted by exporters rushing to get ahead of Trump's anticipated tariff storm -- the broader economic outlook remains fraught with uncertainty," said Stephen Innes at SPI Asset Management. "This complex tapestry of market dynamics -- China's manufacturing uptick, the deepening economic concerns, and the dollar's assertive rally -- are all intricately linked to Trump's aggressive trade posturing. "His vows of imposing hefty tariffs as soon as he enters the Oval Office next month cast long shadows over the Asian markets, making investors both wary and watchful." On currency markets, the euro weakened against the dollar and was sitting at lows not seen since October last year, owing to a brewing political crisis in France, the eurozone's second-largest economy. Prime Minister Michel Barnier faces the risk of being deposed in a no-confidence vote, expected on Wednesday, after he used executive powers to force through controversial social security legislation without a vote. The left wing and the far-right National Rally of Marine Le Pen said they would back a motion bringing down the minority government, which has been in power for just three months. The yield on French government debt rose in another sign of investor concern. France must now pay as much to borrow for 10 years as Greece. - Key figures around 0230 GMT - Tokyo - Nikkei 225: UP 1.7 percent at 39,180.06 (break) Hong Kong - Hang Seng Index: DOWN 0.4 percent at 19,478.28 Shanghai - Composite: DOWN 0.3 percent at 3,354.50 Euro/dollar: DOWN at $1.0491 from $1.0499 on Monday Pound/dollar: DOWN at $1.2649 from $1.2654 Dollar/yen: UP at 149.82 yen from 149.54 yen Euro/pound: DOWN at 82.93 from 82.97 pence West Texas Intermediate: UP 0.2 percent at $68.21 per barrel Brent North Sea Crude: UP 0.2 percent at $71.97 per barrel New York - Dow: DOWN 0.3 percent at 44,782.00 points (close) London - FTSE 100: UP 0.3 at 8,312.89 (close) MENAFN02122024000143011026ID1108948906 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind. Oklahoma's throwback offensive approach against Alabama gets LSU's attentionA Nebraska defensive leader from this season who had previously announced his return in 2025 has changed course and will transfer. Defensive end Jimari Butler said last week he intended to remain with the Huskers for a sixth and final year but pivoted Monday and will enter the portal. The 6-foot-5, 260-pounder from Alabama started 10 games this fall with 22 tackles and a fumble recovery. His seven stops for loss are third most on the team and his 371 defensive snaps were 10th most among the Blackshirts. Butler last week laid out why he would stay with NU once more, describing plans to get a master’s degree in criminal justice after talking with his mother and evaluating his NFL draft stock. He reflected on his previous dalliance with the portal – he entered when Nebraska made a coaching change at the end of the 2022 season but ultimately stayed. “It was kind of a panic move because I didn’t know what to expect,” Butler said. “But I’ve seen my growth as a player and I just wanted to give it another year.” People are also reading... ‘I don’t care who’s played': Nebraska’s Dana Holgorsen on personnel changes at tight end Search warrants lead to arrest of man in narcotics investigation Blue Springs family to host 2025 Cattleman's Ball They fell in love with Beatrice. Butler is the fourth Husker to turn to the portal Monday and second defensive lineman after rotational player Vincent Jackson. Butler’s departure means all three of NU’s starting D-linemen are moving on after seniors Ty Robinson and Nash Hutmacher exhaust their eligibility following the upcoming bowl game. Junior lineman Elijah Jeudy indicated Sunday he would return for his senior year. Asked why so many players stayed with Nebraska last offseason, Butler called the culture “a different vibe.” “It’s more family-oriented,” Butler said. “But you eat what you kill in the program so if you produce you’re going to play.” Butler has appeared in 37 career games with 65 tackles and 17 TFLs in three-plus seasons as a steady contributor. US lawmakers concluded a two-year investigation Monday into the Covid-19 outbreak that killed 1.1 million Americans -- backing the theory that the virus likely leaked from a Chinese laboratory. A 520-page report from the Republican-controlled House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic looked at the federal and state-level response, as well as the pandemic's origins and vaccination efforts. "This work will help the United States, and the world, predict the next pandemic, prepare for the next pandemic, protect ourselves from the next pandemic, and hopefully prevent the next pandemic," panel chairman Brad Wenstrup said in a letter to Congress. US federal agencies, the World Health Organization and scientists across the planet have arrived at different conclusions about the most likely origin of Covid-19, and no consensus has emerged. Most believe it to have spread from animals in China, but a US intelligence analysis said last year that the virus may have been genetically engineered and escaped from a virology lab in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where human cases first emerged. The congressional panel was persuaded by the lab leak theory after meeting 25 times, conducting more than 30 transcribed interviews and reviewing more than one million pages of documents. The investigation included two days of interviews behind closed doors with Anthony Fauci, the government scientist who became the nation's most trusted expert in the chaotic early days of the 2020 outbreak. Fauci's clashes with former and incoming president Donald Trump over the response sparked fury on the right, and he now lives with security protection following death threats against his family. Republicans accuse the 83-year-old immunologist of helping to set off the worst pandemic in a century by approving funding passed on to Chinese scientists they accuse of manufacturing the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes Covid-19. Among its headline conclusions, the report said the National Institutes of Health had indeed funded contentious "gain-of-function" research -- which seeks to enhance viruses as a way of finding ways to combat them -- at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Fauci angrily denied covering up the origins of Covid-19 before the panel in June, arguing that it would be "molecularly impossible" for the bat viruses studied at the lab to be turned into the virus that caused the pandemic. But the panel's report said SARS-CoV-2 "likely emerged because of a laboratory or research related accident." The probe found that lockdowns "did more harm than good" and that mask mandates were "ineffective at controlling the spread of Covid-19," contradicting other research showing that masking in public does reduce transmission rates. Social distancing guidelines also came under criticism, although travel restrictions were deemed to have saved lives. Investigators found that Trump's Operation Warp Speed -- the publicly-funded project to develop Covid vaccines -- was a "tremendous success" but that school closures would have an "enduring impact" on US children. ft/jgc

Nigel Farage said he is weighing up what action to take if the Conservatives do not apologise for accusing Reform UK of “fakery” over its membership numbers. The Reform UK leader pushed back against reports suggesting that legal action would be the next step, saying he would make a decision in the next couple of days about his response if there is no apology for the “crazy conspiracy theory”. Mr Farage also said the party has “opened up our systems” to media outlets, including The Daily Telegraph and The Financial Times, in the interests of “full transparency to verify that our numbers are correct”. His remarks came after Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch accused Mr Farage of “fakery” in response to Reform claiming they had surpassed the Tories in signed-up members. Mrs Badenoch said Reform’s counter was “coded to tick up automatically”. A digital counter on the Reform website showed a membership tally before lunchtime on Boxing Day ticking past the 131,680 figure declared by the Conservative Party during its leadership election earlier this year. Mr Farage, on whether he was threatening legal action or not, told the PA news agency: “I haven’t threatened anything. I’ve just said that unless I get an apology, I will take some action. “I haven’t said whether it’s legal or anything.” He added: “All I’ve said is I want an apology. If I don’t get an apology, I will take action. “I will decide in the next couple of days what that is. So I’ve not specified what it is.” Mr Farage, on the move to make membership data available to media organisations, said: “We feel our arguments are fully validated. “She (Mrs Badenoch) has put out this crazy conspiracy theory and she needs to apologise.” On why Mrs Badenoch had reacted as she did, Mr Farage said: “I would imagine she was at home without anybody advising her and was just angry.” Mr Farage, in a statement issued on social media site X, also said: “The accusations of fraud and dishonesty made against me yesterday were disgraceful. “Today we opened up our systems to The Telegraph, Spectator, Sky News and FT in the interests of full transparency to verify that our data is correct. “I am now demanding Kemi Badenoch apologises.” A Conservative Party source claimed Mr Farage was “rattled” that his Boxing Day “publicity stunt is facing serious questions”. They added: “Like most normal people around the UK, Kemi is enjoying Christmas with her family and looking forward to taking on the challenges of renewing the Conservative Party in the New Year.” Mrs Badenoch, in a series of messages posted on X on Thursday, said: “Farage doesn’t understand the digital age. This kind of fakery gets found out pretty quickly, although not before many are fooled.” There were 131,680 Conservative members eligible to vote during the party’s leadership election to replace Rishi Sunak in the autumn. Mrs Badenoch claimed in her thread that “the Conservative Party has gained thousands of new members since the leadership election”.

Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah remained optimistic despite the party's defeat in all five assembly by-elections held in the state. The vote counting was completed today (November 23), with BJP and its coalition candidates winning by large margins. Speaking to media, Borah said, "We may have lost today, but we are motivated to work harder. Our efforts will pay off, and in the upcoming elections, we will definitely emerge victorious". He further added, "The way the people of Assam made us victorious before, we have also faced defeat. We accept both victory and defeat with humility, but today, the media has not highlighted an important issue." Borah took a sharp dig at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of focusing on national politics over the welfare of Assam. "For the past four months, Sarma has been acting as a part-time Chief Minister. He was sent to Jharkhand, Telangana, and Karnataka, but was unsuccessful in all his ventures. If the BJP had sent him to Maharashtra, they would have lost there as well," he said, criticising Sarma's political engagements outside the state. Borah, while acknowledging their defeat, also emphasised the progress Congress had made. "We congratulate Priyanka Gandhi on her victory in Wayanad. We received strong support in Sidli and Behali, and we are confident about contesting the BTR elections in 2025. The people of Assam and BTR believe in Congress, and they will help us win," he said. He also mentioned, while Congress lost in some constituencies, the party gained significant ground in others, adding, "In Dholai, we improved by over 30,000 votes compared to June 2024. We exposed the BJP's corruption and failure to deliver on their promises." Talking about the pre-poll violence in Samaguri, Borah expressed regret over it and alleged illegal voting. "We have filed complaints with the DC office, the Police, and the Election Commission in Delhi," he said, referring to reports of people from Samaguri casting votes in other states under questionable circumstances.HUMBOLDT, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee man was convicted Thursday of killing two men and wounding a third in a shooting at a high school basketball game three years ago. Jadon Hardiman, 21, was found guilty in Gibson County of charges including second-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons offenses, district attorney Frederick Agee said in a statement.
