Snoop Dogg has nearly as many ties to football as he does to rap music. The entertainer coached youth football for years and created the Snoop League, an after-school program for inner city Los Angeles youths. Snoop has been a guest analyst on football broadcasts and his son, Cordell Broadus, played Division I football. When Snoop took his latest step, becoming the sponsor of a bowl game, he had a demand: Find a way for all players in the game to receive name, image and likeness (NIL) money. “This was Snoop's idea,” said Kym Adair, executive director of the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl presented by Gin & Juice . “He was having conversations with people he knows in the college football world and I got a call that said he wants us to be the first bowl to make this commitment and that's what we did.” The beneficiaries are Colorado State and Miami (Ohio), who will conclude their seasons Saturday at Arizona Stadium in the Arizona Bowl. The bowl is classified as a 501(c)(3), so all revenue goes to charity. And, being one of the few bowls not tied to ESPN, it opens the door for unique sponsorship opportunities. The bowl was previously sponsored by Barstool Sports and the digital media company used its own cast of characters on the broadcast, which was streamed on its digital platforms. Snoop Dogg takes over this year. The rapper/entertainer is the latest celebrity to sponsor a bowl, following the footsteps of Jimmy Kimmel and Rob Gronkowski at the LA Bowl. And, Snoop being Snoop, he wanted to put his own spin on his own bowl. “College football fans are exhausted by the constant talk around NIL, conference realignment, coach movement, transfer portal and super conferences,” Snoop said in a video posted on social media. “So it’s time that we get back to the roots of college football — when it was focused on the colleges, the players and the competition, the community, the fan experience and the pageantry.” With that will be an NIL component. The bowl can't pay players just for playing in the bowl, but both teams participated in football clinics on Friday and will get paid for their services. Other bowls have given single players NIL opportunities, but this is believed to be the first to offer it to every player on both teams. “I love the fact that the Arizona Bowl is unique and tries new things, and obviously having Snoop here is unique,” Colorado State coach Jay Norvell said. “The NIL component, it’s the future. It’s what football has become now. We think it’s fantastic for our kids and then the interaction with the kids is the hidden gem of the whole thing.” The NIL component of the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl comes a month after a similar effort in The Players Era Festival basketball tournament in Las Vegas. The eight-team tournament said it paid out $9 million in NIL money to participating players for activities outside the competition. It also offered $50 million in NIL opportunities over the next three years for services and activities compliant with NCAA regulations. Are the Players Era Festival and Arizona Bowl the start of a new future? It is not out of the question in big-time college athletics, where schools are already preparing for the era of revenue sharing with players next year. “Revenue sharing between the players and the athletic departments is already on the horizon, so whether that takes the place of these types of arrangements or they're completely separate has yet to be determined," Adair said. "We're just trying to be flexible, ahead of the curve and make an impact any way we can.” Just the way Snoop wants it. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. U.S. crude stocks and distillate inventories fell while gasoline inventories rose last week, the Energy Information Administration said on Friday. Crude inventories fell by 4.2 million barrels to 416.8 million barrels in the week ended Dec. 20, the EIA said, compared with analysts’ expectations in a Reuters poll for a 1.9 million-barrel draw. Crude stocks at the Cushing, Oklahoma, delivery hub fell by 320,000 barrels in the week, the EIA said. Refinery crude runs rose by 205,000 barrels per day, while refinery utilization rates rose by 0.7 percentage points to 92.5 per cent in the week, EIA said. U.S. gasoline stocks rose by 1.6 million barrels in the week to 223.7 million barrels, the EIA said, compared with analysts’ expectations in a Reuters poll for a 1.1 million-barrel draw. Distillate stockpiles, which include diesel and heating oil, fell by 1.7 million barrels in the week to 116.5 million barrels, versus expectations for a 313,000-barrel drop, the EIA data showed. Net U.S. crude imports rose last week by 995,000 barrels per day, EIA said.

Expect some drama when the Seattle Seahawks host the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night. Because there always seems to be plenty when these teams meet. ADVERTISEMENT To wit: Jan. 4, 2004: In an NFC wild-card game in Green Bay, Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck told the referee after winning the overtime coin toss that "we want the ball and we're going to score." The Packers won, however, after Hasselbeck threw a pick-six. Sept. 24, 2012: The host Seahawks triumphed on rookie quarterback Russell Wilson's "Fail Mary" pass into the end zone with replacement officials — being used during the referee lockout — split on whether it was a TD or an interception. The lockout ended days later. Jan. 18, 2015: The defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks trailed 16-0 at halftime in the NFC Championship Game before scoring on a fake field goal in the third quarter. Seattle still trailed 19-7 with less than three minutes to play before rallying to take the lead. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers guided the Packers to a tying field goal before Wilson threw a TD pass to Jermaine Kearse on the first possession of overtime to win it. Sunday's game is important for both the Packers (9-4) and Seahawks (8-5). The Packers are third in the NFC North behind Detroit (12-1) and Minnesota (11-2), but they have a two-game lead over the Los Angeles Rams for the conference's final wild-card berth. "The main thing is getting into the dance for sure," Packers center Josh Myers said. "Would we like to be higher up? Absolutely. But we'll live with where we're at, and we'll make the most of it." ADVERTISEMENT The Packers had a three-game winning streak snapped with a 34-31 loss last Thursday at Detroit. Green Bay is relatively healthy, with only safety Javon Bullard (ankle) missing practice time this week. "I think every team that can realize their potential needs to be as healthy as they can be. And injuries are a part of this business," Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. "It is what it is in terms of the next man up, but obviously, you want the guys that are your starters to be available -- especially as you get closer to the end of the year." The NFC West-leading Seahawks, who opened the season with three consecutive wins before losing five of their next six, have gone 4-0 since their bye week. Their recent success is largely because of a much-improved defense that has allowed an average of 15.5 points per game over that span. Seattle defeated host Arizona 30-18 last Sunday as Zach Charbonnet rushed for a career-high 134 yards and two touchdowns in place of the injured Kenneth Walker III (calf). Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said this week that further tests indicated no significant injury for Walker, who is day-to-day. Walker sat out practice this week, as did cornerback Tre Brown (hamstring) and safety Jerrick Reed II (quad). The Seahawks designated two members of their secondary as returning to practice off injured reserve — safety K'Von Wallace (ankle) and cornerback Artie Burns (toe). ADVERTISEMENT Even with the injuries, the Seahawks seem to have adopted a different mindset since their bye week. "Every game's a championship game, and if you really take that approach then when you get to the big game, it won't feel different," quarterback Geno Smith said. "I think we're developing it as a team, and I think the mindset is what's really setting us apart right now." Offensive lineman Laken Tomlinson put it more succinctly: "We're in playoff mode, man."

Kim-Thitikul, Corpuz-Theegala lead Grant Thornton Invitational new duosPolitical bigwigs line up to say final goodbye to Manmohan Singh, the OG reformerThe Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has issued a warning that text messages exchanged between Apple and Android devices may be vulnerable to interception by foreign hackers. According to the agency, the Chinese government could potentially access these messages, highlighting a significant cyber espionage risk. Globally, 270,000 texts are sent every second. However, the FBI revealed that its investigation, launched earlier this year, uncovered “a broad and significant cyber espionage campaign” targeting telecommunications networks. “Since the FBI first identified specific malicious activity targeting the sector, we have identified that PRC-affiliated cyber actors have compromised networks of multiple telecom companies to enable multiple activities,” a senior FBI official disclosed. While the campaign primarily focuses on government and political figures, cybersecurity expert Peter Tran assured the general public that the threat is not universal. “The sky is not falling. There is nothing to panic about,” Tran told WBZ-TV. The FBI confirmed that the hackers accessed the private communications of a limited group of individuals linked to government and politics, seeking intelligence valuable to the Chinese government. “It had interest in this political climate around certain individuals that are of high value to the Chinese government with respect to the intelligence they can gain from it,” Tran explained. To safeguard against such threats, Tran advised against texting sensitive information. “So, the rule of thumb is, don’t text message anything that you wouldn’t grab a bullhorn and say in the middle of Harvard Square,” he warned, citing examples like Social Security numbers or credit card details. For heightened security, the FBI recommends using encrypted messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Telegram. According to the agency, another precaution is to use phones that automatically update their operating systems. Alternatively, users can resort to phone calls to avoid risks altogether. ATLANTA — Georgia Republicans can subpoena Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis about her romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, the outside attorney she hired to lead her 2020 election interference case against former and future President Donald Trump and his allies, a judge has ruled. The decision by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Shukura Ingram was published Monday. It is the latest blow to Willis in regard to her prosecution of Trump. On Nov. 19, the Georgia Court of Appeals disqualified Willis and her office from the case due to her relationship with Wade . Ingram rejected Willis’ arguments that GOP leaders of a state Senate committee didn’t have the authority to issue a pair of subpoenas in August seeking documents and her testimony. But the judge gave Willis until Jan. 13 to explain why the subpoenas shouldn’t be enforced. “(Willis) claims that the subpoenas are overbroad and seek privileged and/or confidential information,” the judge said in her order. “This may very well be true, but this court needs more details on the basis for these objections from (Willis) before ruling on (committee members’) application for enforcement.” Representatives for Willis did not immediately respond Friday to questions about the ruling. Sen. Greg Dolezal , one of the committee members, mentioned the ruling in a social media post Friday. “We’ll see you soon, Madam D.A.,” he wrote. Dolezal, R-Cumming, has unveiled plans to extend the life of the committee into 2025. He told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Ingram’s ruling “follows the plain reading of the law as outlined in our committee.” “From open records laws to lawfully issued subpoenas, D.A. Willis seems to think she is above the law,” Dolezal said. “Once again, the courts ruled otherwise.” Ingram heard arguments from both sides during a hearing in Atlanta on Dec. 3. Willis claimed the subpoenas from the Senate’s Special Committee on Investigations were void because the committee and its members lacked legislative subpoena power, issued the subpoenas while the Senate was adjourned and violated part of the Georgia Constitution. Ingram disagreed. “It is undisputed that the General Assembly has the unenumerated and implied constitutional power to conduct investigations and the statutory authority to issue subpoenas for the purposes of such investigations,” she said. “Here, the Senate, as a chamber, empowered itself to issue subpoenas, which it was authorized to do.” The judge further said Willis failed to identify any authority to support her theory that the subpoenas could not be issued after the Legislature adjourned its regular session on March 28. Ingram also said the Georgia Constitution allows members of one branch of government to investigate members of another branch. The committee members offered to narrow the scope of the subpoenas, the judge noted. She gave them until Jan. 31 to respond to any objections Willis raises about enforcement of the subpoenas. Senators created the committee in January, just weeks after news surfaced that Willis had been in a romantic relationship with Wade. Members sought years worth of communications between Willis and Wade as well as information about his hiring and pay, the DA office’s federal grant funding and interactions with the White House, Justice Department and members of Congress regarding the elections case. They also sought to compel Willis’ attendance at a September hearing, which she declined to attend as she fought her summons in court. ©2024 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Visit at ajc.com . The funding will allow the Health Science program at Academy High School to purchase new equipment, including an Anatomage table, a bariatric nursing mannequin, a blood pressure simulator, microscopes, a mobile charting work station and two SUSIE S2400 patient simulators — a mannequin that allows students to practice NG/OG feeding, heart and lung auscultation and tracheostomy care. Jennifer Chan, one of three Health Science teachers at Academy High School spoke to how these enhancements will prepare more than 100 career and technical education students for a future in the health care industry. “The addition of this equipment will revolutionize how our students learn,” she said. “Being able to use an Anatomage table and high-fidelity patient simulators in high school is a game-changer. It sets our students apart and gives them an incredible head start in their future careers.” Joycelynn Young, a colleague, wholeheartedly agreed. “It’s so exciting to think about how our students will engage with this technology,” the fellow Health Science teacher said. “These tools will allow them to practice skills in a realistic and safe environment, giving them the confidence and competence to excel.” Academy High School was among 35 recipients across the state to earn a JET grant. “This grant opens doors for our program,” Alyssa Williams, the third Health Science teacher at Academy High School, said. “The opportunity to use this level of equipment will inspire our students to dream bigger and work harder. They’re gaining access to resources that many college programs don’t even have.” There will be a check presentation — with representatives from the Texas Workforce Commission present — in early 2025 where officials from Academy ISD will highlight how the funding will help the Health Science program remain a cornerstone in the district. “This award demonstrates the strength of our programs and the dedication of our staff,” Academy ISD Superintendent Darla Nolen said. “Academy ISD is committed to fostering opportunities that prepare students for bright futures, and this grant is a shining example of that mission.”

MHSAA Representative Council elects first new president in decade at fall meetingAmerican golfer Brian Harman is opening up about a near-drowning incident that nearly took the life of his six-year-old son and left a family friend in a coma. Harman, 37, revealed that family friend Cathy Dowdy was "injured really badly" after she attempted to rescue his son from "an abnormally bad" riptide as Dowdy and his family vacationed in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, on Oct. 13. Harman was competing at a golf tournament in China at the time of the incident. “My son was involved, he was out boogie boarding with one of his really good friends, got ripped out to sea by just a rip current,” Harman said Tuesday ahead of The RSM Classic in St. Simons Island, Georgia, where he's currently tied for 80th place after shooting par in the first round on Thursday. He continued: "(Cathy Dowdy) went in the water after my son. He's 6. Couldn't get to him... She's been in a coma for going on six weeks now and so obviously our world down here was kind of turned on its head.” Harman said his son was ultimately rescued by a man named Crane Cantrell, who was walking down to the beach at the time. A lifeguard was able to reach Dowdy, pull her to shore and perform CPR on her until emergency crews rushed her to a hospital, according to St. Johns Citizen . Dowdy remains on a ventilator, as of Monday, according to the latest update shared on a GoFundMe fundraiser set up for Dowdy's medical expenses. The 2023 Open Championship winner applauded the bravery of Dowdy and Cantrell for selflessly jumping in the water to save his son, one of three children he shares with wife Kelly Van Slyke. “I wanted to use whatever platform I have to bring awareness to what Cathy did, what Crane did,” Harman said. “They disregarded their selves, went into the water, saved my son and how do you thank people like that? I don't know other than to just say what you think. I think that bravery and doing something like that for people who aren't your blood is just the most beautiful thing you can do in this life. Harman continued: "We call 'em family friends but they're family... We're with 'em till the end, and I appreciate everybody that's helped us out through all this. You know, prayers for Cathy.” The GoFundMe for Dowdy has raised more than $84K as of Thursday afternoon. The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast . Mechanized AI Announces Expansion of Executive Team With Appointment of Amy Green as COOUS stocks tumbled Friday, heading for a down week despite a year of historic highs. The Dow was lower by around 450 points, or 1%, in early-afternoon trading, the S&P 500 lost 1.4% and the Nasdaq Composite was down by 1.9% after a selloff in Big Tech stocks. Shares of Tesla ( TSLA ) fell by around 4.5%, while Amazon ( AMZN ), Alphabet ( GOOG ), Microsoft ( MSFT )and Nvidia ( NVDA ) were all lower by around 2%. The “Magnificent Seven” group of high-performing tech stocks — Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla — has accounted for more than half of the gains so far this year as they benefit from intense investor focus on ways to play the artificial intelligence boom, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. Analysts have long cautioned that the market’s reliance on a handful of names exposes the stock market to potential trouble, should the group stumble. “If a few of these companies fail to beat an elevated bar for positive surprises, there is a risk they would also fall together,” said Keith Lerner, chief market strategist at Truist Wealth. “I would prefer a broader market, where mega cap growth stocks do well and other segments are also doing well. So if one area falters, another segment picks up the baton.” Bitcoin’s tremendous late-year rally also fizzled, as traders looked to profit taking. The cryptocurrency plunged to around $93,900 Friday after topping $106,000 earlier this month on hopes that President-elect Donald Trump will usher in a crypto-friendly administration when he returns to the White House next month. Treasury yields rose Friday, with the 10-year passing 4.6%, potentially pushing some trading out of equities. Trading volume was thin due to the shortened holiday week, magnifying any moves. Despite the selloff in equities, there’s really no big news markets are reacting to: Such dramatic market moves have become something of a Christmas week tradition , as buying and selling can have a dramatic effect on stock indexes with most traders on vacation. Low trading volume can also mean high volatility. With remaining traders opting to take some recently gained profits and stuff them in their pockets, momentum shifted as folks literally and figuratively headed for the exits. To note: Last year, on December 20, the Dow tumbled 500 points. FactSet analysts said there was “nothing really new” markets were reacting to. On December 15, 2022, the Dow plunged 765 points for no real reason at all. Some market analysts cited “recession fears,” which ended up unfounded. And on December 30, 2019, the Dow sank 200 points . CNN Business’ story noted the day was “relatively devoid of news.” But the mother of all end-of-year market chaos moments happened in a 10-day stretch to end 2018, when the Dow sank 4,000 points before staging one of the best days on record — a 1,086-point gain — before a roller coaster day the next trading day, which nearly wiped out all those gains. Looking ahead to 2025, stocks are likely to outperform bonds even after a two-year run of strong performance, said Anthony Valeri, investment management director at California Bank & Trust. “Investors should maintain their equity exposure into the New Year,” he wrote in a note issued Friday. “Stocks are still the best investment to protect against inflation.” This is a developing story and will be updated.
