At the Brics summit the guidelines for institutional strengthening and further consolidation were outlined. The decision was made to create a category of "partner states". It is important to point out that the Kingdom of Thailand received an invitation and became a partner-state of Brics. A commitment was expressed to developing dialogue with countries of the Global Majority in the "Outreach" or "BRICS plus" format. We witnessed the Brics gradual transformation into a leading player on the world stage. Other achievements include the initiative on the creation of a grain exchange, establishment of a technological and investment platform, creation of a group for developments in the field of nuclear medicine. Noida: Jewar villagers from whom govt intends to buy land for the third and fourth phases of Noida International Airport have been offered nearly 40% higher compensation than second phase rates. Landlosers will be entitled to Rs 4,300 per square metre. In the second phase, the compensation rate was Rs 3,100 per sqm. Noida International Airport Ltd (NIAL), govt's special purpose vehicle for the airport, announced on Monday that around 42,000 people would be impacted by acquisition for the third and fourth phases. At 2,053 hectares, this will be the largest instalment of land buying – spread across 14 villages – for the airport, where UP govt eventually wants four runways. In the development plan, the airport's final phase is set for completion in 2040. The first phase, with one runway and a terminal building, is approaching completion. Passenger operations are scheduled for launch next April. NIAL officials said that 300 hectares of the land acquired for the third and fourth phases will be specifically allocated for prominent international aerospace manufacturers. The revised compensation rate is expected to help convince the reluctant and make the acquisition process. NIAL officials have begun preparations for a social impact assessment for the affected families. "The increase in compensation is expected to encourage farmers to release their land for the project, facilitating the timely progress of the acquisition," said NIAL CEO Arun Vir Singh. CM Yogi Adityanath had announced the increased compensation during his interaction with farmers on Dec 20. Expressing his optimism about the future of Jewar and Noida airport, the CM had said, "In the next decade, Jewar will surpass Noida and Greater Noida in terms of progress. Jewar airport will not only serve as a hub for global travel but also as a key logistics centre. Goods produced in the region will be directly transported to other countries. Large cargo planes will arrive, facilitating the export of farmers' produce." The villages where land has been identified include Neemka Shahjahanpur, Khwajapur, Parohi, Kishorepur, Banwaribans, Jewar Bangar, Muqimpur Shivara, Sabauta, Ahmedpur Chauroli, Dayanatpur, Rohi, Bankapur, Thora and Ramner. The highest share of land identified is in Thora (639 hectares), followed by Neemka Shahjahanpur (307 hectares), Khwajpur (292 hectares) and Ramner (235 hectares). The first phase of the Noida airport involved acquisition of 1,334 hectares. Land acquisition has also been completed for the second phase, which covers 1,365 hectares. Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy say they’re hunting for ways to make American government more efficient. One possible target: the semiannual changing of the clock that so many Americans dislike. “Looks like the people want to abolish the annoying time changes!” Musk wrote last week on his social platform, X, linking to another user’s online poll that found most respondents wanted to end daylight saving time. The practice of shifting clocks forward one hour in March and back one hour in November is intended to maximize Americans’ exposure to sunlight during working hours but has long been derided for causing groggy mornings, missed appointments and even some public health problems. “It’s inefficient & easy to change,” Ramaswamy wrote in a reply to Musk. It was not immediately clear whether the two men, whom President-elect Donald Trump has tapped to run a new effort dubbed the “Department of Government Efficiency” were seriously floating a new policy priority or just spitballing on social media. It was also unclear how a Trump White House would seek to end clock changes, given that Congress – not the executive branch – has controlled the nation’s time shifts, and lawmakers’ recent legislation has stalled. Ramaswamy did not respond to a request for comment. X and Tesla, which Musk also owns, did not immediately respond to requests sent to them asking for comment from Musk. In a follow-up post, Musk told Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) that he did indeed want to end the time changes. The simmering fight over how Americans set their clocks, and when they must do it, has drawn unusual coalitions in Washington based more on geography than on politics. Republicans and Democrats, mostly from the coasts, have called for year-round daylight saving time, saying that permanently advancing the clocks one hour and never “falling back” would allow more people to enjoy sunshine and avoid the frustrations involved with resetting clocks. “Switching the clocks just doesn’t make sense for a country on the move,” Sen. A March 2023 YouGov poll found that 62% of Americans want to end the practice of changing the clocks, but there was little consensus over what to do next. Half of respondents said they wanted year-round daylight saving time, just under one-third wanted permanent standard time and the remainder said they were unsure or had no opinion. For more than a century, Americans have shifted their clocks forward every spring and back every fall, a tradition that was eventually enshrined in federal law. Voters’ complaints about those clock changes are not new. Lawmakers in the early 1970s moved to permanently adopt daylight saving time, but the decision almost immediately backfired with nationwide complaints, such as children waiting in the dark for school buses to arrive. Congress rolled back the change after 10 months. That defeat has not stopped Markey and other lawmakers who have steadily pushed to lengthen the number of days that Americans spend under daylight saving time, extending that period in 1985, and again in 2005. Most Americans now live with daylight saving time for 238 days a year – nearly eight months. (Two states, Hawaii and most of Arizona, have opted out of the semiannual time changes and remain on permanent standard time, which states are allowed to do.) But states cannot adopt permanent daylight saving time unless Congress passes a bill that allows them to do so. There is a growing political movement attempting to do just that; the Senate in 2022 passed a bill that died in the House. Twenty states have also approved measures that would allow them to adopt year-round daylight saving time if Congress passed a bill making it permanent nationwide, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Other countries have ended their own clock changes, including Mexico, which moved to abolish daylight saving time in 2022. Musk was born and spent his childhood in South Africa – which does not follow daylight saving time – and has previously mocked America’s semiannual time changes. “Finally, an explanation for daylight savings that makes sense ...” the billionaire entrepreneur wrote on social media in 2017, linking to a video by the Onion, a satirical news site, that lampooned the practice. President Biden’s views on time changes are unclear. The White House has not responded to questions in the past two years about whether Biden supported efforts in Congress to adopt year-round daylight saving time, which may have stifled lawmakers’ attempts to attract support for their bill. But the next president appears more receptive. “Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is O.K. with me!” Trump wrote on social media in March 2019, the Monday morning after the “spring forward” took effect that year. The Transportation Department oversees the implementation of daylight saving time, and agency officials have said DOT does not have the authority to change it without an act of Congress. It is not clear whether Musk and Ramaswamy, who have argued that recent Supreme Court decisions would allow the White House to make regulatory changes without going through Congress, see a path to doing so with daylight saving time. Their commission is supposed to make its recommendations to the president by July 4, 2026 – the date they’ve targeted to wind down their panel. Musk and Ramaswamy may have other allies in Trump’s emerging administration. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida), Trump’s pick to serve as secretary of state, has spent years calling to end clock changes and make daylight saving time year-round. “My Sunshine Protection Act would end this stupid practice of changing our clocks back and forth,” Rubio said in a statement in March, referencing his legislation. We think this Fourth Boom Cycle has about 12 months runway left, with room for Bitcoin to pop towards $200,000 by late 2025. And we also believe altcoins will start to join the party soon and could soar in 2025, similar to how they soared in 2021. Let’s back up and fill in a few details. Beneath Bitcoin’s price surge has been record-setting demand. Here’s Bloomberg : US exchange-traded funds investing directly in Bitcoin and Ether are enjoying unprecedented demand, buoyed by President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to unfetter the crypto industry from regulatory shackles. The groups of Bitcoin and Ether ETFs each posted record monthly net inflows in November, $6.5 billion and $1.1 billion respectively, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Friday’s daily Ether ETF subscriptions also hit an all-time peak. Propelling this wave of capital is the idea that Trump will not just be friendly to crypto, but an advocate. You’ve probably read headlines suggesting that Trump is considering creating a national strategic Bitcoin reserve. Regardless of whether that happens, the forecasts for Bitcoin’s price have been climbing. And while some are based on little more than wishful thinking, Luke’s prediction of $200,000 is anchored in history...and a lot of math. Here he is with more: If we run a regression analysis on the size of previous boom cycles, we can see a pathway for BTC to rally towards $200,000 in 2025. In the First Boom Cycle, BTC rallied about 55,000%, trough to peak. In the Second Boom Cycle, BTC rallied about 9,000%. In the Third Boom Cycle, BTC rallied about 2,000%. The rallies have been getting smaller. If we run a simple regression on that, we find that BTC could rally about 1,000%, peak-to-trough, in the current boom cycle. Bitcoin bottomed around $16,000 in late 2022. A 1,000% rally from there would get you to about $180,000 on BTC. If we run a regression analysis on Bitcoin’s peak price in previous boom cycles – and not the returns of previous boom cycles – we see a pathway for Bitcoin to hit about $250,000 in this Fourth Boom Cycle... If you throw in the very first peak of ~$25 on BTC in 2011 and then run on regression of those four previous peaks, the statistics suggest that Bitcoin should rally to above $250,000 in this boom cycle. Luke settles at $200,000 as a rough mid-point for his 2025 forecast. Now, while Bitcoin climbing another 50% or 100% by late-2025 is nothing to brush off, it’s the broader altcoin world that offers the real potential for fireworks. That’s a popular opinion. Many investors are reluctant to wade into this corner of the market. The mindset here is something like: altcoins have no inherent value... they’re basically nothing but a gamble ... and you’d better be prepared to lose your shirt if you touch one. Our response might raise an eyebrow... Agreed! At least, up to a point (some of these coins do have inherent value). But yes, there is a heavy element of gambling with altcoins. And yes, you should be prepared for extreme volatility and losses. But for a small percentage of your portfolio that you have earmarked for speculations, the potential payoff is worth taking these risks. In Breakout Trader , Luke trades stocks based on something called “stage analysis.” In short, you only trade stocks that are surging in a “stage 2” bullish breakout. There’s zero consideration given to profits, revenues, margins, cash flows, or any other such traditional measure of fundamental strength. Instead, only one thing matters – price. Here’s more from the User Guide : Let’s say you found a truly atrocious company – we’re talking the opposite of a blue chip. It’s hemorrhaging cash, has awful management, and is in a dying industry. But what if its stock price had just broken out and, hypothetically, was on its way to doubling from $5 to $10? Would any of those negative characteristics matter to you? If what you care about is your personal wealth, they shouldn’t. Why would they? All that would matter is that the stock is doubling while you’re invested... With all due respect to whatever your preferred market approach might be, our Breakout Trader system focuses on the one thing that really matters to your wealth... A price breakout. At the end of the day, the only thing that will make a difference to your portfolio is whether the stocks you own rise in value while you own them. A stock is not a family heirloom to pass down and cherish. It’s a tool. It’s only as useful as its ability to generate wealth, which puts its price (or its dividend payments) squarely in the spotlight. At the end of the day, any other focus is misguided. For example, in early November, the company Quantum Computing ( QUBT ) reported a Q3 net loss of $5.68 million. Its margins also collapsed from 52% to 9%. And yet, since November 1, QUBT is up a staggering 404% as I write. At the end of last month, it was up nearly 600%. The chart below shows this price explosion with a bit longer timeline for context. Now, if you bought QUBT on October 31, would you care that it’s never made one dime of profit... is burning through cash... and has collapsing margins? I doubt it. You’re probably too busy planning your vacation with your profits. So, if you wouldn’t care with a stock like QUBT, why should you care if an altcoin doesn’t have obvious inherent value – as long as it’s surging like QUBT? If your purpose for being in the market is increasing your wealth, you won’t. You’ll see altcoins for what they are – tools for making money. Bitcoin is the big dog in the crypto universe. The chart below will give you a sense for this. We’re looking at Bitcoin’s market cap (in blue at the top) compared to the market cap of the top 125 altcoins (only a handful of those altcoins are shown). As I write, Bitcoin makes up about 56% of the crypto sector’s market cap (specifically, the largest 125 altcoins just referenced). Given its monster size, early in a new cycle, Bitcoin outperforms smaller altcoins. This “Bitcoin dominance” makes sense as the sector is coming out of its prior bust. Bruised investors are in “safety” mode, focusing on what they consider to be the biggest, strongest assets. For crypto, that’s Bitcoin by a mile. But as the cycle continues, gains snowball, investor confidence returns, and animal spirits take over. Eventually, emboldened investors begin allocating to smaller altcoins in search of bigger gains. Leadership rotates away from Bitcoin, toward altcoins. Here’s Luke with the general timing: Our monthly RSI analysis of BTC suggests that we are just now entering the “bubble phase” of the boom cycle. The “bubble” phase is also when altcoins start to soar. As it turns out, the so-called “altcoin season” tends to start right when Bitcoin enters the “bubble phase” – or when its monthly RSI crosses above 70. Which means, in our view, that 2025 could be the altcoin season. Luke isn’t the only analyst suggesting this. Below is a chart from J-C Parets. It shows Bitcoin dominance hitting a three-month low. The question asked is, “Is it the start of altcoin season?” If we go by recent performance, the answer is “yes” – altcoin season appears to have begun. To illustrate, here are some of the top gainers over the last 30 days, according to Crypto Slate : And as a quick reminder of what’s possible, rewind to 2021. Though the last altcoin season ran longer than just that one year, this is what a few of the biggest winners returned in 2021: Now, as quickly as I write this, let’s circle back to yesterday’s Digest in which I highlighted the danger of greed/envy, which can derail your investment plan. As always, remember that return of capital is more important than return on capital. That means altcoins are at the bottom of your list when it comes to allocating your money. Everything else gets priority: bills, savings, blue chip stocks, you name it. However, the good news is that even a few leftover dollars have the potential to generate enormous returns. Say you put $350 into the next “Solana,” and it climbs 10,000% in 2025. Congrats – you’re suddenly sitting on $35,000. This is why we love altcoin season. You don’t have to bet big to win big. A basket approach is the way to go. Spread your money across roughly 10 or more altcoins. Target a mix of some of the larger altcoins with some newer, high-momentum picks. For the largest altcoins, CoinMarketCap will rank them by size. The top five are currently: Ethereum, XRP, Tether, Solana, and BNB. For smaller momentum picks, there are plenty of online tools that show you which coins are trending. CoinMarketCap has such a feature simply called “Trending Coins.” As you’d expect, Luke is beginning to make moves as well. We’ll bring you more of his insights as we get them. Bottom line: Yes, we expect more gains from Bitcoin next year. But the real wealth could come from select altcoins. It’s time to make some wise speculations in anticipation of the buying surge that history suggests is on the way. Do it safely. Prepare for volatility. Ersoy became one of the most well-known figures in Turkish literature worldwide in early 1900s, Necmettin Turinay, teaching at TOBB University of Economics and Technology in the capital Ankara, told Anadolu Agency. Turinay, an expert on Ersoy's literary works and currently working on the latest edition of Ersoy's 1911 work entitled "Safahat", spoke to Anadolu Agency in an exclusive interview at the Museum House of Mehmet Akif Ersoy in Turkey's capital Ankara. His famous work Safahat is a collection of 44 poems in various lengths, including Phases (1911), Lecturing at Suleymaniye (1912), Voices of God (1913), Lecturing at Fatih (1914), Memoirs (1917), Asim (1924), and Shadows (1933). His poems were themed with social problems, philosophical, religious, political and ethical issues. Ersoy's house, in one of Ankara’s older districts Altindag, was once used as a dervish convent. The "Selamlik" -- a part of a house only men can enter -- was assigned to Ersoy during the Turkish War of Independence. Moving from Istanbul to Ankara to live in the dervish convent in 1920s, now converted into a museum, Ersoy arrived there during the most painful and troubled years of foreign occupation in the country, Turinay said. Spiritual leader of Turkish national struggle When Ersoy came to Ankara, the Turkish people had to achieve mainly two things to win the War of Independence, Turinay stressed. The first was to form a new army as the Turkish armies were dissolved with the agreements of World War I, and the second was to encourage the people to join the national struggle with a hope for independence, he stressed. During his speeches at various mosques of Central Anatolian cities, Ersoy gave voice to the faith and spirit necessary for the national struggle, Turinay added. In 1920, Ersoy was also elected the deputy of the northwestern Burdur province and entered the parliament. ‘Free since beginning, to be so forever’ The dervish convent was also the place where Ersoy wrote the lyrics of Turkish National Anthem -- the March of Independence -- Turinay said. On March 12, 1921, the Turkish Grand National Assembly officially declared Ersoy's poem as the national anthem. In the march, Ersoy immortalized his nation's battle for survival, in the wake of World War I, crowning its national liberation in 1921 during the Turkish War of Independence against foreign occupation. After World War I, the Ottoman Empire, one of the greatest empires in history, was destroyed. The British, French and allied forces had shattered the Ottoman Empire, and every part of the country was in captivity. Under those conditions, the national anthem's first words were “Fear not!”. Ersoy began his poem with such a call to give hope to the Turkish and Muslim people against foreign occupation that they can regain their independence, he said. “The Turkish nation has been free since the beginning of history,” said Turinay referring to the two verses of the anthem. “I have been free since the beginning and forever will be so.” What madman shall put me in chains! I defy the very idea!” The phrase of “since the beginning” had special significance expressing that the Turkish people have always lived in independence, founding great empires, Turinay said. Through these verses, Ersoy warned Turkish people that the negative conditions were temporary and urged to struggle together to overcome the captivity, Turinay added. Universal character, historical depth of national anthem Turinay stressed that the national anthem soon began to evoke significant repercussions in the Muslim and Turkic worlds in the wake of official recognition by the Turkish Parliament. “The national anthem, 'the symbol of the Turkish nation', has a universal character appealing to both the Turkish and Islamic worlds,” he highlighted. It was translated into the local languages of various countries, including Pakistan, Syria and Iraq, although the people of these countries were living under captivity of the French and British at that time. “Ersoy, who depicted the most painful years of Turkey during World War I and Balkan Wars in his works, gained a high reputation within and outside of the Ottoman Empire," Turinay underlined. He was a well known poet and author in a wide range of countries extending from Azerbaijan, Pakistan, India, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, North Africa, Crimea to Balkans, he added. “Mehmet Akif’s understanding of poetry was not limited to our national borders, rather he addressed the whole Turkish and Muslim world,” Turinay stressed. History through art, literature Turinay described Ersoy as “one of the geniuses of Turkish poetry, and said: “If there is an awareness today in Turkey about World War I and the Battle of Canakkale [Gallipoli], thanks to Ersoy's poem To the Gallipoli Martyrs". “Turkish people remember the pain, grief and destruction of these years through this poem,” he added. Ersoy not only tells the pain and memory of the martyrs of Gallipoli with this poem, but he also describes the withdrawal of an empire from the stage of history and the closing of an era, Turinay stressed. The Battle of Canakkale, which took place in the northwestern Turkish province of Canakkale's Gelibolu (Gallipoli) district in 1915, marked a turnaround in favor of the Turks against the Allied forces during World War I. Tens of thousands of Turkish nationals and soldiers died, along with tens of thousands of Europeans, as well as around 7,000-8,000 Australians and nearly 3,000 New Zealanders, referred together as Anzac troops. Every detail, every inch of this has been thought through. We have a lot of texts, actually, to serve, whether it’s the Wizard of Oz, the original, Wicked the movie, or Wicked the book. So, for me, it’s a chance to dive in even further. I’ve loved that audiences have accepted this movie and received it in ways that they’re digging already in, in movie one, going back to the theater over and over again, finding little nuances, little hints of things as breadcrumbs all over the place. So the fact they get, at home video, scenes that were never in the movie or that got cut out of the movie, which breaks my heart as well. But it was always to serve the bigger, grand scheme of what the movie was trying to do, and have a rhythm that could be sustainable. So I’m excited for them to dig in further. If they’re looking for more memes, this is the place to look. If they’re looking for behind-the-scenes stuff, it’s great. They get the sing-along version along with it, and they get commentary of every frame from me or even the two girls. So, there’s a lot more content to come if you’re sick of this. I’m so sorry, because it’s a lot more to come. I know. The fact is, it didn’t hurt the cut. It hurt my heart because I love those things. These girls were so plugged into these characters that I could put them in any situation, and it was interesting to see how the relationship would unfold. The train specifically was so great because we had them looking out the window and we saw all these different areas of Oz that we’d never get to see in any other part of the movie. But ultimately, that’s the moment of the movie. Like, you just want to move on. The train arrives, and you wanna get them to Emerald City, because we have a lot more to go. We have like, another hour of movie. So it always came to that point, like, let’s not hold back. Let’s get them there, because we have a lot of juicy stuff to come. So again, home video, you get some opportunities to share some of that. But that broke my heart. Good. I’m glad you feel that. You know, it doesn’t just help us, it helps VFX, because VFX would tell us, “Build as much as you can. It really helps us. It gives us reference points.” So this isn’t just physical sets, this is both of us working together. I think that’s the actual magic. I have full digital characters and all that stuff. But for the actors of course, and for me, I get to walk into a space...I’m not used to sets anyway, because, In The Heights, we’re there in Washington Heights shooting and I’m looking at, hey, that ladder inspires this, that random chair inspires this, the architecture. So I needed physical space to be able to play and work with to make it more unique. And so that’s what we did in Oz with Nathan Crowley, our production designer. You got to build those things. So when the actors came in, they’re like, “Oh, where would Glinda sit? She would sit, oh, right here. Oh, where would Elphaba stand? Right here? You know what? She needs something here. Okay.” And then we would work on a scene. I’d be like, “Where are we?” And they’re like, “We wanna sit on the ground for this scene, Jon.” We’re like, “Okay, let’s try it.” And it doesn’t feel like we’re constructing it. It feels very natural of how these real characters would actually act. Yeah. I mean, not only does it add electricity to every scene because anything can happen if the actors can go anywhere with it, then all the bets are off. Then our camera has to stay with them. Or if our camera can go in, we wanna try a shot. And the actors are feeling that we can really riff with each other. It sort of breaks out this idea that you can think of these things alone, that it makes it something that we all have to contribute in our own little way. And it turns into something neither of us could have done alone. And to me, that’s the magic of movies. It’s one of the very few mediums where it involves many artists and many storytellers to work together. And when it’s done right, you do something that’s elevated and transcendent, actually . You should have been on set when they would sing live. I mean, you have a pianist in the corner, you can’t hear the pianist, because it’s all in their in ears. So we’re standing there in silence. I have my headphones, I can hear, but when their voice is echo in that room, it is magical. It is. When you say electric, it absolutely, 100% is. And the camera, I know, picks it up. So we try to sweep up every, we call them butterflies, every butterfly moment to sweep them up into bottles. So Myron Kerstein, our editor, could really work with that. So it was just a process, and we trusted the process, and I think the audiences, no matter how big the movie is, it’s feeling those little, little bits, and I think that’s what makes the magic. Playoff hopes in the balance when the Broncos face the Bengals in CincyNEW YORK (AP) — The founder and former CEO of the failed cryptocurrency lending platform Celsius Network could face decades in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to federal fraud charges, admitting that he misled customers about the business. Alexander Mashinsky, 58, of Manhattan, entered the plea in New York federal court to commodities and securities fraud. He admitted illegally manipulating the price of Celsius’s proprietary crypto token while secretly selling his own tokens at inflated prices to pocket about $48 million before Celsius collapsed into bankruptcy in 2022. In court, he admitted that in 2021 he publicly suggested there was regulatory consent for the company’s moves because he knew that customers “would find false comfort” with that. And he said that in 2019, he was selling the crypto tokens even though he told the public that he was not. He said he knew customers would draw false comfort from that too. “I accept full responsibility for my actions,” Mashinsky said of crimes that stretched from 2018 to 2022 as the company pitched itself to customers as a modern-day bank where they could safely deposit crypto assets and earn interest. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a release that Mashinsky “orchestrated one of the biggest frauds in the crypto industry” as his company’s assets purportedly grew to about $25 billion at its peak, making it one of the largest crypto platforms in the world. He said Mashinsky used catchy slogans like “Unbank Yourself” to entice prospective customers with a pledge that their money would be as safe in crypto accounts as money would be in a bank. Meanwhile, prosecutors said, Mashinsky and co-conspirators used customer deposits to fund market purchases of the Celsius token to prop up its value. Machinsky made tens of millions of dollars selling his own CEL tokens at artificially high prices, leaving his customers “holding the bag when the company went bankrupt,” Williams said. An indictment alleged that Mashinsky promoted Celsius through media interviews, his social media accounts and Celsius’ website, along with a weekly “Ask Mashinsky Anything” session broadcast that was posted to Celsius’ website and a YouTube channel. Celsius employees from multiple departments who noticed false and misleading statements in the sessions warned Mashinsky, but they were ignored, the indictment said. A plea agreement Mashinsky made with prosecutors calls for him to be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison and to forfeit over $48 million, which is the amount of money he allegedly made by selling his company’s token. Sentencing was scheduled for April 8.
Stock indexes drifted to a mixed finish on Wall Street Thursday, as some heavyweight technology and communications sector stocks offset gains elsewhere in the market. The S&P 500 fell less than 0.1% after spending the day wavering between small gains and losses. The tiny loss ended the benchmark index’s three-day winning streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.1%. Trading volume was lighter than usual as U.S. markets reopened following the Christmas holiday. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, slipped 0.2%. Meta Platforms fell 0.7%, and Amazon and Netflix each fell 0.9%. Tesla was among the biggest decliners in the S&P 500, finishing 1.8% lower. Some tech companies fared better. Chip company Broadcom rose 2.4%, Micron Technology added 0.6% and Adobe gained 0.5%. Health care stocks were a bright spot. CVS Health rose 1.5% and Walgreens Boots Alliance added 5.3% for the biggest gain among S&P 500 stocks. Several retailers also gained ground. Target rose 3%, Ross Stores added 2.3%, Best Buy rose 2.9% and Dollar Tree gained 3.8%. Traders are watching to see whether retailers have a strong holiday season. The day after Christmas traditionally ranks among the top 10 biggest shopping days of the year, as consumers go online or rush to stores to cash in gift cards and raid bargain bins. U.S. applications for unemployment benefits held steady last week, though continuing claims rose to the highest level in three years, the Labor Department reported. Treasury yields mostly fell in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury slipped to 4.58% from 4.59% late Tuesday. Major European markets were closed, as well as Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. Trading was expected to be subdued this week with a thin slate of economic data on the calendar. Still, U.S. markets have historically gotten a boost at year’s end despite lower trading volumes. The last five trading days of each year, plus the first two in the new year, have brought an average gain of 1.3% since 1950. So far this month, the U.S. stock market has lost some of its gains since President-elect Donald Trump’s win on Election Day, which raised hopes for faster economic growth and more lax regulations that would boost corporate profits. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation, a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. Even so, the U.S. market remains on pace to deliver strong returns for 2024. In between times, Gladiators made a triumphant return, Phillip Schofield gave self-pity a bad name on Cast Away, Chris McCausland saved Strictly, the art of the sitcom died with the end of Curb Your Enthusiasm and the BBC’s obsession with drag acts reached its bloody conclusion with Smoggie Queens. With awards for the following: BEST QUIZ SHOW ANSWER 2024 : The Chase, Bradley Walsh: “Which leader was exiled to islands in the Mediterranean and South Atlantic?” Sophie: “Tony Blair.” If only, if only, if only. BEST LIVE TV MOMENT : I greatly enjoyed Israel briefly leapfrogging everyone and getting 12 from Britain at the Eurovision Song Contest, when the public vote was opened, and also Stephen Mulhern inviting Ricky Hatton to “hit me,” at Dancing On Ice. Which he did, very very hard. But neither was quite as funny as the meltdown Emily Maitlis , Susanna Reid, Ed Balls and the rest of Britain’s breakfast TV luvvies suffered in the early hours of November 6, when Donald Trump won the US election. With the killer line belonging to GMB work experience lad Noel Phillips, at Kamala Harris’s “victory party”. “The mood, despite there being nobody here, is one of hope.” WORST LIVE TV MOMENT : Saturday Kitchen Live’s Pride special “in honour of the LGBTQI+ community” was a cult meeting so terrified of offending the alphabet people it cancelled the usual “heaven or hell” recipe feature in case anyone got the impression there was any negative side to the event. But it was still less sinister and woke than the $130million Olympic Games’ opening ceremony with its headless women, Last Supper fat lass, environmental bleats and musical segment in honour of the EU. MOST GRIEVOUSLY MISLEADING TITLE : C5’s Sue Perkins: Lost In Alaska. BEST DRAMA : The mesmerising Wolf Hall, Slow Horses, Industry, Shogun and Until I Kill You may all have been technically better, but none of them had the same emotional impact as Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, which led to questions in Parliament, new legislation and King Charles forcing former Post Office boss Paula Vennells to return her CBE for “bringing the honours system into disrepute”. Yet still the newly knighted Sir Alan Bates hasn’t received any compensation. Extraordinary. WORST DRAMA: It would take a special kind of disaster to beat BBC1’s Nightsleeper, which seemed to be heavily based on Thomas The Tank Engine’s Rusty And The Boulder episode. But Michael Sheen’s utterly deranged drama The Way, about a left-wing Welsh workers’ uprising, was that special kind of disaster.
