Call it a sophomore slump, but something is clearly off with C.J. Stroud. Sunday’s shock 32-27 loss at NRG Stadium left Texans’ fans stunned, sinking them to 7-5 only six days removed from a dominant Monday Night Football win that inspired growing optimism. DeMeco Ryans’ side had an abundance of chances to put away a back-and-forth game, but another tough day from Stroud made life difficult in several key situations. Stroud, who threw two picks on the day, finished with only 247 passing yards and two touchdowns – the seventh time this year he’s thrown for less than 250 yards. The offensive line, which again gave up four sacks, continues to make life difficult for Stroud, a player who was once fancied a legitimate MVP candidate at the start of the season. Not surprisingly, Stroud was his own harshest critic after Sunday’s loss, admitting to reporters that winning starts and ends with him playing well. “It’s no secret, I haven’t been playing well, personally for my standard,” Stroud said. “I have a couple of good drives, but it’s just up and down. It starts with practice and in the games, I’ve got to stay focused. I’ve been focused, I watch as much film as anybody, it’s just sometimes it doesn’t go your way. I’ve got to be harder on myself and realize that games come down to me making plays.” Stroud now has three games with multiple interceptions this year. His first came in the second quarter on a pass intended for John Metchie, which set up the Titans to score a crucial field goal right before the half. Is it time to have a conversation about cj stroud? pic.twitter.com/hSco6Ac0Ng “The first one I didn’t really see Metch. Tried to put it in the window and can’t really do that there. Led them to points which led us to lose. The second one I’ve just got to put it higher. Those are two mistakes that can’t happen,” Stroud admitted after the game. It’s no question Stroud is feeling the effects of a long, bruising season behind one of the league’s worst offensive lines. The Texans had given up the third-most sacks in the league heading into Sunday’s game, and things aren’t about to get any easier with the Chiefs and Ravens ahead next month.
