United Airlines shares closed today at a value of $95.79, approaching the carrier's record highs from the years before the COVID-19 pandemic. Get all the latest aviation news from Simple Flying! With such impressive growth in the market this year alone and competitors that are looking to challenge United in many of their key markets, many observers have begun to question whether the airline's success can continue. With investments continuing across the carrier's network, including $500 million being sunk into an expansion at the airline's principal east coast hub at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), United certainly seems to have bold ambitions . Earlier today, Scott Kirby made one of his most direct public discussions regarding the company's impressive performance and its ambitions for future growth, when he appeared on CNBC. From today's appearance, we can get a better idea of exactly how Kirby and United's upper management team are charting their path forward and what they think investors should know about their ambitions to remain on the profitable path. The airline's pathway forward involves continued investment in its hubs Kirby was quick to indicate today that the airline, while happy with its current performance, has strong plans to continue expanding and providing returns to investors. Traditionally, airline stocks have been seen as volatile investments, and carrier performance can only be successful for so long. Delta Air Lines, an Atlanta-based legacy airline, has historically set the standard for profitability, largely thanks to a lucrative partnership with American Express. Scott Kirby believes that, amid a post-pandemic environment that has changed industry dynamics, United remains in a strong position to push toward its biggest competitor. Kirby particularly believes that expanding transatlantic capabilities will be the key to the airline's continued success. In the years following the pandemic, international travel has boomed and airports have struggled to meet this increase in demand and capacity. As a result, airlines, like United, that invest heavily in their facilities will be able to thrive. United Airlines recently announced a $500 million expansion plan at Washington Dulles (IAD), according to Quartz . The carrier is looking to build fourteen new international gates, which Kirby says will be used to support transatlantic expansion. Industry dynamics have changed The structure of the commercial airline industry has changed significantly, as airlines have begun to remold schedules to meet the needs of remote travelers and higher-end leisure customers, with loyalty programs playing an increasingly important role. When addressing this, Kirby had the following words to share: "I think this industry has structurally changed coming out of COVID, and it has turned into a couple of winners and everyone else. The gap is very wide." Kirby alludes to his belief that United is one of these "winners" he identified, citing the fact that the airline had the best revenue day in its history this past Sunday. He also projected that the carrier would have the best December in its history from a profitability standpoint. These bold expectations have led the market to continue projecting growth for the company, which has led to the stock's continued increase in valuation. However, should the company perform below these lofty expectations for the holiday season, United shareholders might be in for weaker returns in January.

(AP) — Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania conceded his reelection bid to Republican David McCormick on Thursday, as a statewide recount showed no signs of closing the gap and his campaign suffered repeated blows in court in its effort to get potentially favorable ballots counted. Casey’s concession comes more than two weeks after Election Day, as a grindingly slow ballot-counting process became a spectacle of hours-long election board meetings, social media outrage, lawsuits and accusations that some county officials were openly flouting the law. Republicans had been claiming that Democrats were trying to steal McCormick’s seat by counting “illegal votes.” Casey’s campaign had accused of Republicans of trying to block enough votes to prevent him from pulling ahead and winning. In a statement, Casey said he had just called McCormick to congratulate him. “As the first count of ballots is completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward with the knowledge that their voices were heard, whether their vote was the first to be counted or the last,” Casey said. The Associated Press called the race for McCormick on Nov. 7, concluding that not enough ballots remained to be counted in areas Casey was winning for him to take the lead. As of Thursday, McCormick led by about 16,000 votes out of almost 7 million ballots counted. That was well within the 0.5% margin threshold to trigger an automatic statewide recount under Pennsylvania law. But no election official expected a recount to change more than a couple hundred votes or so, and Pennsylvania’s highest court dealt him a blow when it refused entreaties to allow counties to count mail-in ballots that lacked a correct handwritten date on the return envelope. Republicans will have a 53-47 majority next year in the U.S. Senate. Follow Marc Levy at twitter.com/timelywriter
Millionaire investor and "Shark Tank" star Kevin O'Leary told CNN that Vice President Kamala Harris was a 'faulted' candidate who 'never could articulate anything' during her time in politics. Millionaire investor and "Shark Tank" star Kevin O'Leary delivered an unsparing critique of Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday, suggesting the failed presidential candidate's November loss resulted from long-running political inadequacies. During a roundtable on "CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip," O'Leary said the glaring mistake by Democrats came early on when they positioned Harris as the nominee without holding a primary. "They made an excuse of $317 million in the kitty. They kept the same campaign manager and said we will anoint this faulted, broken candidate who was inconsequential in her vice presidency," he said. "Lost in 2019. As you detailed, complete loser in 2020. Never could articulate anything. Had no compassion for people and her own advocates." O'Leary also pointed to Harris' appearance on "The View" as a turning point in the campaign. He suggested that the women on the show wanted Harris to win and threw her "softball" questions to bolster her public image; in that interview, Harris couldn't say what she would have done differently from Biden in the previous four years, linking her even more strongly to the unpopular incumbent. X USERS LEFT STUNNED BY 'TERRIBLE' VIDEO OF HARRIS SPEAKING TO SUPPORTERS: 'WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?' Kevin O'Leary delivered a scathing critique of Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting her loss was the result of long-running personality faults. (CNN/Screenshot) "She was so weak as a candidate, she couldn't even answer that she would do something different. It ricocheted around the world. She was finished. They will never do that again," he added. O'Leary has been an outspoken critic of Harris and the Democrats leading up to the 2024 presidential election. He said on "CNN NewsNight" in October that after watching her town hall the night before, Democrats should have concerns about how she ended up being the nominee. HARRIS CAMPAIGN CHAIR FUMES ABOUT NARRATIVE SHE WAS AFRAID TO DO INTERVIEWS: 'COMPLETELY BULLS---' Vice President Kamala Harris delivers a concession speech after the 2024 presidential election, on Wednesday, Nov. 6, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. (AP/Jacquelyn Martin) He said he was struck by how "only 90 days ago, [Nancy] Pelosi went to Biden and said, 'You need to step aside' and convinced him to do so. He made the decision, and he did actually ask her, and we've now learned this, 'Is she the right person to drive this home?' He questioned that. He could have said, 'We need to run a process in order for me to make this move,' but they decided not to. I don't know who 'they' is. Was it Obama? Was it Pelosi? I don't care who it was." After using an analogy about stock picking, O'Leary asserted that Harris' ascendancy to the nomination "is the second time the Democratic Party has circumvented democracy." B.C. man arrested on allegations he threatened police while livestreaming1 2 Lucknow: With just four months left before the ongoing financial year ends, UP recorded only 1.48 lakh households receiving 100 days of work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS). This is significantly less than in the 2023-24 fiscal when 5.32 lakh households completed 100 days of wage employment under the Centre's ambitious employment scheme. The women's days of employment under the scheme also decreased from 42.26 in 2023-24 to 41.9 this year. MNREGS aims to provide up to 100 days of guaranteed wage employment to rural households in a year, focusing on livelihood security and rural infrastructure development. According to the data from the rural development department, the scheme was the biggest job generator during the pandemic in 2020-21 when almost 7.76 lakh families in UP got 100 days of employment. This, however, dipped gradually to 5.84 lakh in 2021-22 and then to 4.96 lakh in 2022-23. The number of households covered under the scheme rose again to 5.32 lakh in 2023-24. Moreover, the average days of employment provided per household also dipped from 50.37 days in 2023-24 to a little over 40 in the current fiscal, data show. The decline comes despite the Centre increasing the wages under the scheme from Rs 230 to Rs 237 per day. The shortfall underlined the delayed or insufficient fund allocation by the Centre to UP. Officials said the state was allocated Rs 26 crore as a labour budget, which was much less than Rs 34.5 crore earmarked in 2023-24. The lower demand for jobs was also due to seasonal agricultural activity and the migration of workers. Experts also pointed to the implementation challenges, including inefficiencies at the local administrative level, delays in the approval of projects, and a lack of awareness among beneficiaries, which impacted the enrolment of people. The issue of delay in wage payments is also known to have discouraged people's participation, sources said. Officials mentioned that adverse weather conditions, such as floods or droughts, also disrupted ongoing projects and reduced available workdays. Officials, however, maintained that the scheme could catch up in the upcoming months when the pace of developmental activities pick up. The larger implication of the reduced work participation could potentially have an economic impact – limited rural income generation and economic stability. It could also lead to rural distress, especially among the vulnerable groups relying on MNREGS for livelihood support. The shortfall also highlights governance issues in implementing social welfare schemes effectively, an analyst said.Israeli airstrikes Saturday in central Beirut killed at least 15 people, officials said, as the once-rare attacks on the heart of Lebanon's capital continued without warning while diplomats scrambled to broker a cease-fire. Assembly Election Results Live Updates Maharashtra Election Results Jharkhand Election Results Bypoll Election Results Lebanon's Health Ministry said 63 people were wounded in the strikes, which were the fourth in central Beirut in less than a week. The escalation comes after U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein traveled to the region in pursuit of a deal to end months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah that has erupted into full-on war. Israeli attacks have killed more than 3,500 people in Lebanon, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. The fighting has displaced about 1.2 million people, or a quarter of Lebanon's population. On the Israeli side, about 90 soldiers and nearly 50 civilians have been killed by bombardment in northern Israel and the fighting. An eight-story building is turned to rubble The 4 a.m. strikes destroyed an eight-story building in central Beirut. Hezbollah legislator Amin Shiri said no Hezbollah officials were inside. The attack stripped the facades from some nearby buildings and crumpled cars. Israel's military did not comment on the casualties. Also Saturday, a drone strike killed two people and injured three in the southern Lebanese port city of Tyre, according to the Lebanese state-run National News Agency. Mohammed Bikai, spokesperson for the Fatah Palestinian faction in the Tyre area, said those killed were Palestinian refugees from nearby al-Rashidieh camp who were out fishing. Despite a warning last month by Israel's army to avoid Lebanon's southern coast, "you can't tell someone who needs to eat that you can't fish," Bikai said. The Health Ministry said other airstrikes killed eight people, including four children, in the eastern town of Shmustar, five others in the southern village of Roumin, and another five people in the northeastern village of Budai. Sticking points in cease-fire talks Two Western diplomatic officials on Saturday described disputed points between Israel and Lebanon in cease-fire negotiations. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the talks. The current proposal calls for a two-month cease-fire during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Lebanon and Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the southern border south of the Litani River. Thousands more Lebanese army troops would patrol the border area with U.N. peacekeepers, and an international committee would monitor the deal's implementation. The officials said Israel wanted more guarantees that Hezbollah's weapons are removed from the border area. Israeli officials have said they would not agree to a deal that did not explicitly grant them freedom to strike in Lebanon if they believe Hezbollah is violating it. Lebanese officials have said the inclusion of such a term would violate their country's sovereignty. And Hezbollah leader Naim Kassem said this week that the militant group would not agree to a deal that doen'ts not entail a "complete and comprehensive end to the aggression." Lebanon and Israel also dispute which countries would sit on the monitoring committee. The officials said Israel refused to allow France, which has been close with Lebanon since its colonial rule there ended. Lebanon refused to have Britain, a close ally of Israel. Deadly strikes in Gaza and people trapped in rubble In northern Gaza, the Health Ministry said at least 80 people, total, were killed on Thursday and Friday, including near the Kamal Adwan and Al-Ahli hospitals. It said dozens of people were trapped under the rubble. Israel's army said it wasn't aware of a strike near Kamal Adwan, and it didn't respond to questions about the other attacks. On Saturday, at least six people, including three children and two women, were killed in the southern city of Khan Younis, according to Associated Press reporters and staff at Nasser Hospital. "Suddenly we woke up to dust, smoke and a fire," said one grieving father, Ahmad Ghassan. "We found him dead and his brother injured." Another father wept as he carried his child's body in a bloodstained sheet. The Palestinian death toll from the 13-month-long war surpassed 44,000 this week, according to the Health Ministry, which doesn't distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count. It has said more than half the dead are women and children. The Israeli military says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting another 250. Around 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third believed to be dead. The Israeli offensive in Gaza has devastated wide areas, and around 90% of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been displaced, often multiple times. Hundreds of thousands live in tent camps with little food, water or basic services. At least two women were shot dead Saturday while waiting in line for bread in central Deir al-Balah, relatives and witnesses told the AP. It was unclear who shot them and why. Reactions continue to the ICC warrants Conditions in Gaza prompted this week's decision by the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant based on "reasonable grounds" that they bear responsibility for a war crime and crimes against humanity. The court also issued a warrant for top Hamas official Mohammed Deif, though Israel claims it killed him. Netanyahu condemned the warrant. Global reactions have been mixed. The U.K. reiterated its support for the court but stopped short of saying whether it would arrest Netanyahu if he visits. Russia doesn't recognize the court's jurisdiction and hasn't commented. The U.S. also doesn't recognize the court's jurisdiction and has rejected its decision. Nomi Bar-Yaacov, an associate fellow in the International Security Program at London's Chatham House think tank, said that even if Netanyahu won't be able to travel to many European countries because of risk of arrest, he'll go to the United States. "That will only strengthen his ties to Donald Trump," she said. Assembly Election Results Live Updates Maharashtra Poll Results Highlights 2024 Jharkhand Poll Results Highlights 2024 (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel )Mumbai, Dec 28 (IANS): Despite stock market volatility amid geo-political uncertainties, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net investors in India so far this year, as the country’s economy showed tremendous resilience, market watchers said on Saturday. For 2024 (till December 27), FIIs sold equity for Rs 119,277 crore through the exchanges. In contrast to this selling trend, they invested Rs 120,932 crore through the primary market, said experts, citing data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). “This means FIIs are net investors in India so far this year. The selling through exchanges is mainly due to the high valuations and investing through the primary market is mainly due to the fair valuations,” said Dr V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. The selling spree by FIIs seen in October and November declined in December. There has been occasional buying by FIIs in early December but they turned sellers again, though not on a sustained basis like in October and November. “An important characteristic about FII investment is that they have been consistent investors of equity through the primary market. In December through 27th, FIIs invested Rs 17,331 crore through the primary market,” said Kumar. This trend of selling through the exchanges and buying through the primary market is discernible in the year-long trend in 2024. In the debt market, FIIs have invested Rs 112,409 crores so far this year, as per the NSDL data. According to market experts, FIIs may again turn sellers into equity in early 2025 since the dollar has been appreciating (dollar index is above 108) and the US 10-year bond yields are attractive at around 4.4 per cent. “FIIs will turn buyers in India when there are indications of growth and earnings recovery,” they added. Manoj Purohit, Partner and Leader, Financial Services Tax, Tax and Regulatory Services, BDO India, said that after a couple of months of continuing hefty burnouts, the capital markets witnessed a comeback from the foreign fraternity this month. The feather in the cap is the record-breaking investments via the FDI route thereby crossing the $1 trillion mark. “The return of foreign participants to India market can be attributed to various factors. Primarily, on the macro front, the recent policy announcements in the US impacting the peer countries, settling geopolitical situation among Middle East countries, the well-controlled inflation, and interest rate check,” Purohit explained.
