Authorities have uncovered large-scale illegal telephone and internet signal transmission cables in Tak's Mae Sot district, which they believe were used to provide internet services to call centre scam gangs operating across the border in Myanmar. The bust was announced in a statement released by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) legal affairs commissioner, Pol Gen Nathathorn Prousoontorn, and the director of Thailand's Action Taskforce for Information Technology Crime Suppression (Tactics), Pol Lt Gen Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, yesterday. According to the statement, local authorities recently uncovered 16 high-capacity cables that were used to carry internet and telephone signals across the border, calling it the largest bust of its kind to date. An analysis carried out by NBTC experts found the high-capacity fibre-optic lines extended deep inside Myanmar territory, ending at a major cross-border economic zone that is known to host a high number of scammers. According to Pol Gen Nathathorn, the crackdown is part of an ongoing effort to eliminate unauthorised cable installations along the Thai-Myanmar border. He said the illegal use of transmission lines is a violation of Section 67 of the Telecommunications Business Operation Act, and offenders face up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to 10 million baht. Pol Lt Gen Thatchai said law enforcement agencies will continue to work closely with the NBTC to dismantle and seize illegal transmission equipment. According to him, authorities have also seized over 101,000 Thai-registered SIM cards, SIM boxes and related devices used for fraudulent activities.BOSTON — Forty years ago, Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie rolled to his right and threw a pass that has become one of college football’s most iconic moments. With Boston College trailing defending champion Miami, Flutie threw the Hail Mary and found receiver Gerard Phalen, who made the grab while falling into the end zone behind a pair of defenders for a game-winning 48-yard TD. Flutie and many of his 1984 teammates were honored on the field during BC’s 41-21 victory over North Carolina before the second quarter on Saturday afternoon, the anniversary of the Eagles’ Miracle in Miami. “There’s no way its been 40 years,” Flutie told The Associated Press on the sideline a few minutes before he walked out with some of his former teammates to be recognized after a video of The Play was shown on the scoreboards. A statue commemorating Doug Flutie's famed "Hail Mary" pass during a game against Miami on Nov. 23, 1994, sits outside Alumni Stadium at Boston College. Famous football plays often attain a legendary status with religious names like the "Immaculate Reception," the "Hail Mary" pass and the Holy Roller fumble. Michael Dwyer, AP File It’s a moment and highlight that’s not only played throughout decades of BC students and fans, but around the college football world. “What is really so humbling is that the kids 40 years later are wearing 22 jerseys, still,” Flutie said of his old number. “That amazes me.” That game was played on national TV the Friday after Thanksgiving. The ironic thing is it was originally scheduled for earlier in the season before CBS paid Rutgers to move its game against Miami, thus setting up the BC-Miami post-holiday matchup. Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie rejoices in his brother Darren's arms after B.C. defeats Miami with a last second touchdown pass on Nov. 23, 1984, in Miami. File Photo “It shows you how random some things are, that the game was moved,” Flutie said. “The game got moved to the Friday after Thanksgiving, which was the most watched game of the year. We both end up being nationally ranked and up there. All those things lent to how big the game itself was, and made the pass and the catch that much more relevant and remembered because so many people were watching.” There’s a statue of Flutie winding up to make The Pass outside the north gates at Alumni Stadium. Fans and visitors can often be seen taking photos there. “In casual conversation, it comes up every day,” Flutie said, when asked how many times people bring it up. “It brings a smile to my face every time we talk about it.” A week after the game-ending Flutie pass, the Eagles beat Holy Cross and before he flew off to New York to accept the Heisman. They went on to win the 49th Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day. Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie evades Miami defensive tackle Kevin Fagan during the first quarter of a game on Nov. 23, 1984, in Miami, Fla. JOE SKIPPER, AP File “Forty years seem almost like incomprehensible,” said Phalen, also standing on the sideline a few minutes after the game started. “I always say to Doug: ‘Thank God for social media. It’s kept it alive for us.”’ Earlier this week, current BC coach Bill O’Brien, 55, was asked if he remembered where he was 40 years ago. “We were eating Thanksgiving leftovers in my family room,” he said. “My mom was saying a Rosary in the kitchen because she didn’t like Miami and wanted BC to win. My dad, my brother and I were watching the game. “It was unbelievable,” he said. “Everybody remembers where they were for the Hail Mary, Flutie pass.” Mike Tyson, left, slaps Jake Paul during a weigh-in ahead of their heavyweight bout, Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, in Irving, Texas. By DAVID BRANDT SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Even when Penn State quarterback Drew Allar gets some praise, it’s usually a backhanded compliment. They say he’s a good game manager and stays within himself, or that he doesn’t try to do too much. They mention he might not be flashy, but he gives the team a chance to win. And here’s the thing about Penn State since Allar stepped under center: The Nittany Lions have won games. A lot of them. Sometimes that’s hard to remember considering the lukewarm reception he often gets from fans. “I get it — we have a really passionate fan base and they’re a huge part of our success,” Allar said Dec. 29 at College Football Playoff quarterfinals media day. “For us, we always want to go out there every drive and end with a touchdown, so when we don’t do that, there’s nobody more frustrated than us.” The polarizing Allar is having a solid season by just about any standard, completing more than 68% of his passes for 3,021 yards, 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions while leading the sixth-seeded Nittany Lions to a 12-2 record and a spot in the Fiesta Bowl for the Jan. 1 game against No. 3 seed Boise State. But in a college football world filled with high-scoring, explosive offenses, Allar’s no-frills performances often are the object of ire. The Penn State offense is a run-first bunch, led by the talented combo of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen. “If we had a nickel for every time there was a Monday morning quarterback saying some BS stuff, we’d all be pretty rich,” offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki said. “I think part of being a quarterback, especially at Penn State but really anywhere, is how you respond to and manage criticism.” The 20-year-old Allar has made strides in that department after a trying 2023 season that finished with a 10-3 record. He says that’s largely because once fall camp started back in August, he logged off the social media platform X. Allar said negative online experiences wore on him last year, and his phone number was leaked a few times, which added to the stress. He finally realized that controlling outside narratives was impossible, so the best course of action was to eliminate a needless distraction. “I’ve been more mentally free, as much as that sounds crazy,” Allar said. “I think that’s been a huge difference for me this year.” The biggest criticism of Allar — and really Penn State as a whole during the 11-year James Franklin era — is that he isn’t capable of winning the big games. He’s 0-2 against rival Ohio State and threw a late interception against Oregon in the Big Ten title game earlier this month, which sealed the Ducks’ 45-37 victory. He wasn’t great in the CFP’s first round, either, completing just 13 of 22 passes for 127 yards as Penn State muscled past SMU 38-10 on a cold, blustery day to advance to the Fiesta Bowl. But the quarterback is confident a better performance — aided by a game that will be played in comfortable temperatures in a domed stadium — is coming. “For me, I just have to execute those (easy) throws early in the game and get our guys into rhythm,” Allar said. “Get them involved early as much as I can and that allows us to stay on the field longer, call more plays and open up our offense more. That will help us a ton, building the momentum throughout the game.” Allar might be a favorite punching bag for a section of the Penn State fan base, but that’s not the case in his own locker room. Star tight end Tyler Warren praised his quarterback’s ability to avoid sacks, saying that the 6-foot-5, 238-pounder brings a toughness that resonates with teammates. “He’s a football player,” Warren said. “He plays quarterback, but when you watch him play and the energy he brings and the way he runs the ball, he’s just a football player and that fires up our offense.” Now Allar and Penn State have a chance to silence critics who say that the Nittany Lions don’t show up in big games. Not that he’s worried about what other people think. “I think it’s a skill at the end of the day — blocking out the outside noise,” Allar said. “Focusing on you and the process and being honest with yourself, both good and bad.”

Adams, who is from Kuujjuaq, was one of 12 appointees named to the second-highest level of the Order, which recognizes achievement and merit of a high degree for service to Canada. “Entrepreneur and pilot Johnny Adams has helped transform Nunavik’s economic and social development as co-founder of several regional air services,” said Ken MacKillop, secretary to the governor general, while addressing the roomful of appointees and guests. “His dedication to Indigenous-owned organizations is reflected in his many endeavours.” Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, who is also from Nunavik, placed the red and white snowflake-shaped insignia of the Order on Adams. Adams served in the merger between First Air and Canadian North and is currently executive chairman of Canadian North. He is co-founder of several regional air services, including Atai Air Charters, Helicopters-Ungava, Nunavik Rotors Inc., and InnuKoptéres Inc. He also held several elected positions in Kuujjuaq, serving as a hamlet councillor in 1987 and mayor between 1991 and 1997. In 2006, Adams was appointed a knight of the National Order of Quebec, bestowed by the province’s lieutenant-governor. Other Indigenous people appointed as members to the Order of Canada on Thursday included Savage Bear from Montreal Lake Cree Nation, John William Beaucage from Wasauksing First Nation, Harley Crowshoe from Piikani Nation, and Patricia Ningewance Waabi-bizhikiikwe from Lac Seul First Nation.
