Democrats had pushed a separate bipartisan border security bill this year, which included increased funding for border agencies. The premise of Pantheon is rooted in the near future, where advancements in AI and consciousness uploading have become a reality. Maddie, a lonely teenager, bullied at school, comes across someone intriguing in a chatroom. He talks only in emojis but she has a gut feeling that he is someone she knows and he is trying to tell her something. When her mother Ellen investigates who her daughter is chatting with online, she comes face to face with a past she has been wanting to deny. It is her dead husband and Maddie's father, David. David worked for Logorhythms, a tech company founded by Stephen Holstrom (voiced by William Hurt). Holstrom is a brilliant but troubled genius (bearing a resemblance to Steve Jobs) whose company creates a system to upload human consciousness after death. Despite Ellen's disapproval, David had offered his brain for the experiment to upload his consciousness to the cloud. He is communicating with his family two years after his physical death and that's an existential predicament if there ever was one, for everyone involved. Ellen resists accepting him as a person, but Maddie wants her father back in whatever form he exists in. Maddie crosses paths with Caspian, a skilled hacker, who is aware of tech giant like Logorythms and their ethical corruption. As the story unfolds, Caspian must navigate the dangerous world of corporate espionage, moral dilemmas, and betrayal. His quest to discover the truth about his identity adds another layer of intrigue, as his goals clash with those of the powerful tech conglomerates trying to control Logorythm for their own ends. The voice acting is admirable across the cast and lends a sensitivity to the characters which matches the nuance expressed by actual actors. Actors like Hurt, Aaron Eckhart, Paul Dano and Daniel Dae Kim assume their roles with natural flair which is consistent. What truly elevates Pantheon beyond its high-concept premise is the emotional depth of its characters. At its heart, the show is about relationships. Whether it’s the strained but loving relationship between the father and his daughter, the philosophical dilemma of a mother watching her “digital self” exist in a world without her, or the way in which digital entities confront the concept of their own mortality, the series excels at showing the human side of a high-tech world. The AI characters are portrayed not as cold, emotionless machines, but as sentient beings capable of experiencing and understanding the nuances of human emotion—albeit through the lens of their digital existence. Rather than simply offering a high-tech, action-packed spectacle, the show centres around the human cost of uploading consciousness. What happens to personal identity when a human mind is digitised? How do emotions, relationships, and memories manifest in a virtual environment? Can a "copy" of a human mind truly be considered the same person, or does the process of digital replication create a whole new entity? The animation is beautifully crafted, blending traditional 2D with modern 3D elements. The digital landscapes are wonky and push the boundaries of imagination as David and the viewer try to define the space he occupies as an uploaded consciousness sans body. The elasticity of the art in this particular dimension reflects the dystopian undertones of the show to good effect. The eight episode season keeps good pace and once you have gleaned a few clues about the working of its main puzzle, you will be hooked. It’s not a show that rushes to reveal its secrets or cram in action scenes – although it is peppered with plenty of those. Instead, Pantheon takes its time to carefully develop its characters and storylines, allowing the viewer to become deeply invested in both the emotional and intellectual arcs of the characters. The show is methodical, balancing the weight of its ideas with enough personal drama to keep viewers emotionally engaged. The various character relationships—whether it’s the connection between a father and daughter, or two lovers on either side of the digital divide—are explored with depth and sensitivity, adding a rich layer to the speculative fiction narrative. One of the most compelling elements of Pantheon is its philosophical exploration of what it means to be human in an age of rapid technological change. The central question the show poses is whether humanity can maintain its identity and consciousness when technology begins to supplant the organic. The concept of digital immortality is the primary plot device, but it is presented in an emotional tapestry of psychological and ethical issues. As the series progresses, characters must contend with questions about the nature of selfhood, the fragility of memory, and the potential consequences of being "reborn" in a virtual landscape. Florida resident Megan filed a lawsuit against Character.ai after her 14-year-old son, Sewell, was manipulated by a bot to kill himself. In the months leading up to his death, Sewell had become obsessed with his virtual girlfriend who exacerbated his depression and goaded him to think of suicide. The suit names Google as a defendant as Character.ai's parent company. However, the tech giant denies having ownership rights of the AI chatbot developer. Pantheon is nothing if not thought-provoking, and upon rewatching it will likely expose its richness of philosophical depth. The Madden altcast will be streamed on Peacock with the main broadcast airing on NBC, beginning at 1 p.m. EST. It is the first time NBC has done an alternate broadcast of an NFL game. CBS has done at least one game on Nickelodeon since the 2020 season, while ESPN/ABC have the “ManningCast” as well as animated presentations featuring " The Simpsons " and " Toy Story." Amazon Prime Video also has “Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats” during “Thursday Night Football.” “It’s ironic that you want to make the video game as much as actual live play as possible and now you are doing the opposite of trying to make the real game look like the video game,” said Josh Helmrich, the NFL’s senior director of media and Next Gen Stats. The altcast on Peacock will blend video game elements — such as Madden 25 graphics, route trees, player cards, button icons on eligible receivers and player ratings — with live action. GenuisIQ will provide real-time data via the league’s Next Gen Stats. There will also be times when animations from the video game — such as touchdown celebrations — will be used instead of live action. (AP) — North Carolina election officials won't order another recount in a close state Supreme Court race after a partial hand recount failed to suggest the trailing Republican candidate could overtake the Democratic incumbent. Following the completion of a machine recount of over 5.5 million ballots last week, Democratic Associate Justice Allison Riggs maintained a 734-vote lead over Republican Jefferson Griffin, who is currently a state Court of Appeals judge. Griffin then requested a partial hand recount in which randomly chosen ballots from 3% of the voting sites in all 100 counties were reexamined. The law says a statewide hand recount would have been required if the sample results differed enough so that the result would be reversed if the difference were extrapolated to all ballots. But the sample tabulations, which finished Tuesday, showed Riggs actually picking up more votes than Griffin. As a result, the State Board of Elections said a total recount won't be ordered. The five-member state board was scheduled to hear arguments Wednesday on protests previously filed by Griffin and three GOP legislative candidates who also are in very close elections. Riggs, one of two Democrats on the seven-member court, declared victory again on Tuesday, and her campaign renewed calls for Griffin to concede. Griffin didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment. The protests going before the state board, which question if well over 60,000 ballots should have been counted, cover three categories of voting. They include votes cast by people with voter registration records that lack driver’s licenses or partial Social Security numbers; overseas voters who have never lived in North Carolina but whose parents were deemed state residents; and military or overseas voters who did not provide copies of photo identification with their ballots. Separately Tuesday, a Court of Appeals panel unanimously declined Griffin's request to order the state board to rule on the protests before Wednesday's meeting to accelerate the process. The board could dismiss the protests or — if problems are found — order corrected ballot tallies, more recounts or new elections. Decisions by the board — with a 3-2 Democratic majority — can be appealed to state courts. Other protests filed by Griffin and the legislative candidates are being first considered by county boards. The state Democratic Party filed a federal lawsuit last week seeking to block the State Board of Elections from ruling in any way to throw out the disputed ballots. The Democrats' lawyers say federal law prohibits such systematic challenges to voter eligibility for an election that has already passed. Some of the protests focus on activities that Republicans already sued over before the November election. Democratic officials and their allies held a news conference early Tuesday outside the state Supreme Court building and strongly criticized Griffin and other Republicans for initiating claims they say would disenfranchise legal voters. North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Anderson Clayton said she fears the state Supreme Court could ultimately side with Republicans and remove the challenged ballots. “We are trying to make sure that people are raising their voices, that we are filing lawsuits where we can,” Clayton said. “And we are also trusting the process of our board of elections officials to do their job and to count every single vote.” Griffin led Riggs by about 10,000 votes on election night, but that lead dwindled and flipped to Riggs as qualifying provisional and absentee ballots were added to the totals. Other types of protests filed by Griffin and the legislators are being considered by county boards. Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of a healthcare executive in New York City, apparently was living a charmed life: the grandson of a wealthy real estate developer, valedictorian of his elite Baltimore prep school and with degrees from one of the nation’s top private universities. Friends at an exclusive co-living space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Hawaii where the 26-year-old Mangione once lived widely considered him a “great guy,” and pictures on his social media accounts show a fit, smiling, handsome young man on beaches and at parties. Now, investigators in New York and Pennsylvania are working to piece together why Mangione may have diverged from this path to make the violent and radical decision to gun down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a brazen attack on a Manhattan street. The killing sparked widespread discussions about corporate greed, unfairness in the medical insurance industry and even inspired folk-hero sentiment toward his killer. ▶ Read more about Luigi Mangione Peter Weeks, the Blair County district attorney, says he’ll work with New York officials to try to return suspect Luigi Mangione there to face charges. Weeks said the New York charges are “more serious” than in Blair County. “We believe their charges take precedent,” Weeks said, promising to do what’s needed to accommodate New York’s prosecution first. Weeks spoke to reporters after a brief hearing at which a defense lawyer said Mangione will fight extradition. The defense asked for a hearing on the issue. In the meantime, Mangione will be detained at a state prison in western Pennsylvania. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office said Tuesday it will seek a Governor’s warrant to secure Mangione’s extradition to Manhattan. Under state law, New York Gov. It would then be presented to law enforcement in Pennsylvania to expedite Mangione’s return to New York. Dickey, his defense lawyer, questioned whether the second-degree murder charge filed in New York might be eligible for bail under Pennsylvania law, but prosecutors raised concerns about both public safety and Mangione being a potential flight risk, and the judge denied it. He shouted something that was partly unintelligible, but referred to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people.” He’s there for an arraignment on local charges stemming from his arrest Monday. He was dressed in an orange jumpsuit as officers led him from a vehicle into the courthouse. Local defense lawyer Thomas Dickey is expected to represent the 26-year-old at a Tuesday afternoon hearing at the Blair County Courthouse. Dickey declined comment before the hearing. Mangione could have the Pennsylvania charges read aloud to him and may be asked to enter a plea. They include possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. In New York, he was charged late Monday with murder in the death of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione likely was motivated by his anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain with corporate greed, said a a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive healthcare system in the world and that the profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of the suspect’s hand-written notes and social media postings. He appeared to view the targeted killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO as a symbolic takedown, asserting in his note that he is the “first to face it with such brutal honesty,” the bulletin said. Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski a “political revolutionary” and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, the document said. A felony warrant filed in New York cites Altoona Officer Christy Wasser as saying she found the writings along with a semi-automatic pistol and an apparent silencer. The filing echoes earlier statements from NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny who said Mangione had a three-page, handwritten document that shows “some ill will toward corporate America.” Mangione is now charged in Pennsylvania with being a fugitive of justice. A customer at the McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where Mangione was arrested said one of his friends had commented beforehand that the man looked like the suspect wanted for the shooting in New York City. “It started out almost a little bit like a joke, my one friend thought he looked like the shooter,” said the customer, who declined to give his full name, on Tuesday. “It wasn’t really a joke, but we laughed about it,” he added. The warrant on murder and other charges is a step that could help expedite his extradition from Pennsylvania. In court papers made public Tuesday, a New York City police detective reiterated key findings in the investigation he said tied Mangione to the killing, including surveillance footage and a fake ID he used to check into a Manhattan hostel on Nov. 24.
