Middle East latest: Israeli strikes in Gaza kill more than 50 people, including kidsBrisbane news live: Labor eyes last chance of 2024 to tick policy boxesBy MICHAEL RUBINKAM and MATTHEW BROWN Swaths of Pennsylvania and many other states are honeycombed with old, unstable mines that can cause the earth to suddenly give way — a phenomenon known as “ mine subsidence ” that poses a threat to people and property. That’s what searchers in Westmoreland County, just southeast of Pittsburgh, fear led to the disappearance of 64-year-old Elizabeth Pollard . Pollard and a young granddaughter were looking for a lost cat when she went missing Monday evening. At about the same time, a sinkhole appeared roughly 20 feet (6 meters) from where she had parked her car, in an area above an old coal mine. The granddaughter was found safe inside the car hours later, while the difficult and potentially dangerous search for Pollard continues. Mine subsidence has caused billions of dollars in damage in areas of the U.S. where mining once took place. In Pennsylvania alone, coal was mined in nearly half of the state’s 67 counties and there are at least 5,000 abandoned underground mines, leaving behind hazards that officials say can arise at any time. The Marguerite Mine that authorities believe resulted in the sinkhole was last operated in 1952 by the H.C. Frick Coke Co., according to the state Department of Environmental Protection. The coal seam in the area is about 20 feet (6 meters) beneath the surface. The state Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation will examine the scene when the search concludes to see if the sinkhole was indeed caused by mine subsidence, spokesperson Neil Shader said. There are as many as 500,000 abandoned mines in the U.S. — far outnumbering those that are still active, according to the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration. Then he was shot to death in New York In many cases their owners simply walked away from coal or precious metals mines when they became uneconomical to operate and declared bankruptcy, leaving behind safety hazards and costly pollution cleanups that public agencies must handle. Old mines pose myriad dangers , with 381 people killed and 152 injured at abandoned mine sites nationwide between 2000 and 2013, according to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Victims can fall into hidden shafts, get lost in underground tunnels or perish from poisonous gases present in many old coal mines. Mine shafts can extend hundreds of feet beneath the surface and often are unmarked. State and federal agencies have sealed off many old mines. But more are discovered every year and officials have yet to conduct basic risk analyses on most of the abandoned mines on federal land. Besides the safety hazards, millions of gallons of water loaded with arsenic, lead and other toxic metals flows daily from contaminated mine sites without being treated. Rubinkam reported form northeastern Pennsylvania and Brown reported from Billings, Montana.

Naturally, this means that it boasts an incredibly deep and varied motorcycle catalog. Alongside those that have taken their place as Harley-Davidson's strangest models ever made , there are those that prioritize aesthetics, fuel efficiency, power, and, in many cases, comfort. Looking over Harley-Davidson's many body styles, there are several that are specifically designed to keep riders pain-free as they engage in long-distance rides. Known as Harley-Davidson's Grand American Touring motorcycles, these more driver-friendly frames come in a variety of shapes and looks. One of the most prominent of the bunch is the Street Glide, which was introduced as it's known today back in 2006. It has built its reputation as one of the most comfortable Harley-Davidsons for long-distance riding , but that's not to say that all renditions of it are created equal. Like any motorcycle, each year of the Street Glide has its share of strengths and weaknesses in regard to comfort, maneuverability, build quality, looks, and more — and riders have never shied away from discussing them. For instance, the 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide has been extensively covered online in the decade since it hit the streets. Here's what owners have said about it and what the consensus is on whether it's a good model year. As far as those who've shared their feelings on the 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide, it appears that the majority of riders are more than happy with their purchase. "I bought a new streetglide last year and never looked back! Lots of power and rides like a rolling couch," Harley-Davidson Forums user Nitrusfix wrote in 2013. In the same thread, FNGonaRK was also highly satisfied with the 2014 Street Glide, specifically highlighting the motorcycle's suspension, stereo, navigation equipment, and overall user-friendliness. "I'm 5'7" also and bought a 2014 Streetglide special and I love it. Handles better, rides better, corners like a dream," added radar007usa in a thread on the V-Twin Forum, giving the 2014 model plenty of praise. User uppercaseJC even called the bike one of the nicest-looking motorcycles Harley-Davidson has made. Meanwhile, in a separate thread from 2024 on the Harley-Davidson Forums, user 95 Ultra Classic Rider spoke to the durability of their 2014 Street Glide, commenting, "My 14 Street Glide has been solid. 25k miles so far. Never had a need to open the engine and it does not seep or leak oil at all." Jshopes concurred on this point, noting that they've had to do little else than routine maintenance throughout the years on their Street Glide. Harley-Davidson Forums' Pass Rider put their 2014 model up against anything they'd purchased from Harley, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Honda, calling it the best motorcycle they'd ever owned. Though the 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide seems to have tons of positive reviews to its credit, it's not quite perfect. There are a few negative aspects of these bikes that seem to be inherent to their design and not individual problems. Over on the Harley-Davidson Forums, user Batwing Bob pointed out that there is some heft to the 2014 Street Glide, so it's probably not the best ride for someone with bad knees or those incapable of handling extra weight. Another issue often talked about is the height of the bike stock and it not being the most welcoming for shorter riders. "I have a 14 SGS. I am 5'7" and could not quite flatfoot my bike," recalled Dyna Dave 117 , explaining that they had to take their Street Glide in for a seat modification so they could sit comfortably. It should also be mentioned that back around the time the Street Glide was released, Harley-Davidson issued a recall on them and several other models. A widespread defect in saddlebag mounting hardware could lead to them falling off and putting riders and anyone behind them in danger. Ultimately, roughly 185,000 Harley motorcycles were recalled, per NBC News in 2015. It's unknown just how many Street Glide units were impacted by this misstep, but at any rate, it's something to keep in mind if you're debating getting ahold of a 2014 model all these years later. They may have some minor drawbacks, but overall, 2014 Street Glides aren't anywhere near the worst motorcycles in the history of Harley-Davidson . In fact, they appear to be solid, well-liked bikes among Harley-Davidson owners.

Casper Ruud has questioned Emma Raducanu 's brand endorsements after it was claimed that she has raked in more money than athletes such as Caitlin Clark and Simone Biles. Raducanu is a hugely attractive prospect for brands looking for high-profile figures to promote their products. She has signed sponsorship deals with Nike, Wilson and Evian and is an ambassador for the likes of Dior, Tiffany and Porsche. Earlier this week, it was claimed by Sportico that Raducanu has made £10,974,040 over the last 12 months. The vast majority of that figure is said to have come from her various brand endorsements, as opposed to prize money won on the tennis court. It puts her above WNBA sensation Clark, who is said to have earned around £8,621,804 through her endorsements . Biles, meanwhile, has reportedly earned the same amount but Ruud is not convinced those figures are accurate. Replying to a fan on X (formerly Twitter), the 25-year-old questioned how anybody outside of Raducanu's closest circle would know how much money she was really making. He wrote : "How do you/they know? Have you seen all of Emma, Aryna and Elena’s contracts with your own eyes?" The fan replied with an excerpt from the article, which stated the figures were 'compiled through conversations with those familiar with marketing agreements'. Ruud was still not buying it, though. He responded: "Fair enough, but even for them it’s a guessing game. There’s no way an agent would ever give access to their player's contracts. "So, in reality, only the agent and player know the real numbers. They should write 'highest estimated paid athletes' instead." Raducanu boasts a healthy personal fortune, with the Sunday Times Rich List estimating her net worth at around £10million. Last year, she was named by Forbes as the sixth highest-paid tennis player in the world. Most of the money she has earned over the years has come from endorsements, with the WTA website putting her total prize money from tennis at £3.35m. Questions have been asked over whether Raducanu's commercial deals have distracted her from improving her form on the court. However, she hit back at those suggestions earlier this year by pointing out that most of her work goes unnoticed. She told The Times : "There are those who see me doing a shoot or posing for a commercial and they don't see the seven hours before that at the training centre, doing physio, gym, hitting balls. "But if on a rare evening I go to a premiere and I get photographed, that's my downtime."
