In recent years, Manchester United's recruitment strategy has come under intense scrutiny. Despite their significant financial power, the club has struggled to attract and secure top-tier talent in the transfer market. This has been particularly evident in their pursuit of world-class players who can make a real impact on the team's performances. As a result, the squad has been criticized for lacking depth and quality in key positions, leading to inconsistent results on the field.
‘Pantone 17-1230 Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence.’ The Pantone Color Institute has named Mocha Mousse as the Color of the Year 2025. Described as a “warming, brown hue imbued with richness,” Pantone 17-1230 Mocha Mousse reflects people’s “desire for comfort.” “For Pantone Color of the Year 2025, we look to a mellow brown hue whose inherent richness and sensorial and comforting warmth extends further into our desire for comfort, and the indulgence of simple pleasures that we can gift and share with others,” says Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. Focusing on personal pleasures, Mocha Mousse is a sophisticated tone that exudes earthy elegance while remaining authentic and approachable. It embodies the decadent qualities of chocolate, cacao, and coffee. According to Pantone, it is a hue that represents “me moments,” everyday escapes, and well-deserved treats, empowering everyone to create moments of luxury. A post shared by PANTONE (@pantone) In selecting the Color of the Year, Pantone’s global team of experts studies color influences from various fields such as the film and fashion industries, travel destinations, other areas of design, and socio-economic conditions. More recently, they have also considered new technologies, materials, textures, and social media, among other factors, to predict the perfect hue for each year. “Underpinned by our desire for every day pleasures, Pantone 17-1230 Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director Pantone Color Institute. “Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, Pantone17-1230 Mocha Mousse extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe.” Hello, readers! South Korea's Yoon faces impeachment vote on SaturdayMITCHELL — Angela Teel has been the nurse manager for the operating room at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital for the better part of a decade. And in those years, she has almost always been short of personnel for a very important staff role. Surgical technologists, who assist doctors with their work in the operating room, have been in short supply for years at the local hospital and others like it across the country. ADVERTISEMENT “In the nine years I’ve been nurse manager here, we’ve been fully staffed with surgical technicians for one week,” Teel told the Mitchell Republic in a recent interview. “Typically we have 10, and one week we had 10. And then life happened and that tech had to leave prematurely. So we’ve been struggling.” The skilled professionals who prepare and hand instruments to doctors, prepare the operating room for procedures and get patients ready for surgery are vital to a smooth-running operating room, and many of those professionals have entered retirement age or left the profession due to COVID-19. They work with individual doctors to learn their preferences and are the right-hand assistants to surgeons performing everything from cataract to heart surgery. On average, about 8,600 job openings are projected in the United States each year across the next decade for surgical technologists and assistants, according to estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Avera Queen of Peace has had an ongoing need for surgical technologists, and a recent partnership between the hospital and Stat605, a surgical technology apprenticeship training program, is opening up a new pathway for those interested in the profession to learn on the job while they complete the necessary curriculum to become certified in the field. The program just saw its most recent graduate take her position among the hospital staff, and hospital officials are hoping it continues to be a strong feeder system for the vital professionals. Erin Howardson, the founder of Stat605, said she established the program after having worked as a surgical technologist for 27 years. “I was teaching at a college in Minnesota during COVID-19 and I had to transition it into online. And ever since then I thought there is such a steady decrease of surgical techs graduating, so why not try to see what I could do to incorporate help for more hospitals and help students who aren’t able to go on to a surgery tech program,” Howardson said. ADVERTISEMENT She began working with the United States Department of Labor and came up with a registered program that allows potential surgical technologists to study courses online while simultaneously serving an apprenticeship with partnering hospitals. Facilities become registered through the USDOL, and once approved, selects, hires and employs the apprentice full-time. The apprentice works alongside an experienced surgical technologist learning hands-on skills while completing their coursework outside the job through Stat605. After successful completion and meeting the requirements for the National Center for Competency Testing, the apprentice can apply for national certification. The hospitals generally pay for the apprentices to take the program and the apprentice agrees to work with that particular hospital for a set period, guaranteeing the hospital a newly-trained surgical technologist and giving the student a chance to kickstart a career without the challenges that come with a traditional classroom setting. That’s important for rural hospitals like Avera Queen of Peace, many of which rely on traveling surgical technicians that may work at more than one hospital. The hospital usually performs around 15 to 20 surgeries a day. McKenna Carpenter, a 2018 Mitchell High School graduate looking for a career change, connected with Avera Queen of Peace and Stat605. “I didn’t think I was going to be here. I didn’t know what I wanted to do,” McKenna admits. “(But) I always knew I wanted to do something in medicine.” Carpenter is the most recent graduate of the program at Avera Queen of Peace, after having dived headlong into the training and the job itself. She had previously worked in surgical technology in Parkston, where she took part in another on-the-job-training program. But the hospital did not often perform surgeries, a process she enjoyed and was hoping to do more of. She enrolled in the Stat605 program, which is a one-year, full-time experience balanced between working with mentors at the hospital and studying online courses, which were created and are presented by Howardson herself. ADVERTISEMENT Carpenter said she has benefited from numerous facets of the program. With other training opportunities located outside the community, including at tech schools in Sioux Falls, Watertown and Rapid City, the Stat605 program allowed her to live and work in Mitchell, her hometown. The program is streamlined to be centric to surgical technology, with emphasis on classes like microbiology, anatomy and physiology and less on traditional core classes such as English to go along with the specific training. And since Carpenter is working at the same hospital full-time every day, she could apply her lessons immediately as well as integrate herself into a hospital system smoothly. The ability to perform her clinical work during the day during the program gave her the hands-on experience she would need, and she also had a guaranteed job at the hospital after passing her coursework. Howardson said the result is a well-trained and confident surgical tech that hospitals like Avera Queen of Peace so desperately need. The program’s efficiency allows students like Carpenter to advance quickly. Stat605 Brochure by inforumdocs on Scribd “With an apprenticeship they are doing clinicals all day, every day for eight hours while working, and we’re finding that students are catching on much faster,” Howardson said. It’s a demanding job, requiring a self-motivated, detail-oriented person willing to occasionally work odd hours. A day shift may be slow, but surgical technologists are often on call for certain shifts, meaning they head to the hospital at any time of night to assist with emergency calls. It’s not necessarily a career choice for everyone, but Carpenter has embraced it fully. She admits she was not a big test-taker in her school days, but the instruction style of Stat605 and the support she got from her co-workers at Avera Queen of Peace bolstered her confidence and excitement. The work is satisfying, and even rushing to the hospital in the middle of the night has become appealing, she said. ADVERTISEMENT “I worked until 3 a.m. last night. I personally like being on call. Some people think it’s weird, and in the beginning I didn’t like it,” Carpenter said. “But now that I’m on my own and have worked at night, I really like it. I get to see the interesting cases come in and help that patient. It’s a nice outcome.” The Stat605 program has been a positive for Avera Queen of Peace and its staffing issues. Teel said the program is well-balanced, mixing solid instruction with on-site clinical work, and graduates like Carpenter are a testament to the quality professionals that can come out of the program. It’s a partnership that has benefited everyone, she said. “It’s been a blessing, absolutely,” Teel said. “We’ve had on-the-job training students before, but they didn’t have the curriculum part to go with it. So they had the hands-on feel but they didn’t have the knowledge. When Erin reached out, we jumped right on board, because we needed the help.” Teel said the hospital also welcomes traditional path students who have graduated from technical colleges, many through the Build Dakota Scholarship Program, and as with others they are happy to have them. But the apprenticeship program has been a godsend so far, she said. The hospital is still waiting to welcome its next apprentice into the fold, but she said working with Stat605 has had particular benefits. ADVERTISEMENT “We do partner with surgery tech schools in the state, but this program enhances that. We can get them set with everything they need here while they’re learning. And it does decrease the amount of time for that orientation,” Teel said. Howardson is also a hands-on instructor. In addition to creating the online curriculum program, she consults with students throughout the program who have questions. They have her cell number, and she encourages them to call her if they need to. She noted she had just taken two calls from students that morning, one in Fargo, North Dakota and one in Brainerd, Minnesota who had questions for her. Having that connection helped her absorb the material, Carpenter said. “She was available if I had questions at 8 p.m., and I’d text her throughout the day. I could call or text, which is really nice, because I don’t feel like you get that in a classroom setting,” Carpenter said. Howardson said the program has been well-received by both hospitals and students, and she hopes to make adjustments and to continue spreading the word about the alternative pathway to a career in surgery technology. It’s a great career, she said, and she knows there are more potential good fits if they’re willing to consider it. “(I plan to) keep growing it and working with the Department of Labor and help more facilities keep students who want to be a surgical tech. It’s a great career and there is such a high-demand for it right now,” Howardson said. “There is a need, especially in rural communities.” ADVERTISEMENT Carpenter, the second student to go through the program in South Dakota, is now working full-time at Avera Queen of Peace and has no plans to leave anytime soon. She agreed that there is deep potential for those who are willing to put in some hard work and who love helping others. She said she knows others can find a career to be passionate about through Stat605. After all, she did it herself. “I love my job. I can’t say anything bad about it,” Carpenter said. “I love it. I go home (after work) and talk about it all the time.” More information on Stat605 can be found at stat605.com.

For the past combined 60 years, the two of us have embarked on a project that is still ongoing today. Our premise was simple. Our mission was to improve neighborhoods through various methods, grants and resources. The most prolific measure that changed thousands of lives is housing workcamps for habitable affordable housing. Many people know workcamps by their signature names such as World Changers, Appalachian Service Project, Humanitarian XP, Group Mission Trips and Mission Serve. Workcamp groups have changed communities nationally and internationally. They enlist residents to journey to various areas across the United States and abroad to work on owner-occupied homes for free. What many people don’t understand is that workcamp groups come typically for one week over the summer and bring 250-300 workers. They reside in West Virginia for a week and sleep on classroom floors while working on dilapidated houses when the temperature is 100 degrees or higher. Workcamp workers also pay a fee of $300 or more to work for a week. This helps cover food, insurance, residency, utilities and some building materials. This is an inspiring notion for workers to miss time from their family, pay to work, endure high temperatures and help someone else. In essence, most programs start in June and some programs end the first week of August to ensure students get home in time for school. Many organizations are involved in this process including cities, counties, the West Virginia Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Rebuilding Together, West Virginia National Guard, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Benedum Foundation, churches and non-profits such as the Southern Appalachian Labor School (SALS). Over the years, camps that we have served include Clendenin, St. Albans, Upper Kanawha Valley, Charleston, Huntington, Hurricane, Fayette County and Putnam County. It’s estimated that workcamps have rehabilitated over 4,000 homes over the years. For each camp, approximately $500,000 is invested in the local economy, which includes building materials, food, rentals, labor, equipment and much more. This is a significant investment for local businesses. One of the areas that was mentioned in our last article was the ability to provide tools and training for our children. Developing their ability to build porches, decks, ADA fixtures, gutters/downspouts, siding, roofing and other projects provides them the hands-on experience to tackle projects at their home or someone’s home. Workcamps are not easy to assemble. Sometimes funding is difficult to obtain due to various circumstances. Sometimes schools and other large buildings are not easily accessible due to their scheduling. Access to showers, large meeting rooms and other required space is not available in smaller schools. Churches typically do not have this type of square footage to accommodate sizeable groups. Workcamp groups often do not receive the praise they deserve. Envision a loved one who can no longer work on the family home. Visualize any other program that could assist a family member who may not have many family members or resources to help. Community Action Partnership (CAP) organizations help hundreds of residents each year with weatherization and deserve much credit for their work. As should Habitat for Humanity for its hard work to ensure families have homes. If there’s been a time to refocus on needs in West Virginia, it’s now. Our housing stock is in poor shape. We’re on the bad side of the housing curve with many homes built in the 19th century and not meeting fire, building or ADA codes. Our current motivation is to resell, resell and resell homes without addressing habitable health and safety issues. And there are no initiatives or enforcement measures to remedy deficiencies. Housing workcamps can only do so much. Many structures are slum and blight situations with few legal agencies and resources to address home owners to rectify before someone gets injured. Blighted structures often sit around for years while some families fight over their inheritance. Over the years, we couldn’t have been more appreciative of the work by workcamp groups that may travel from as far away as Alaska, Utah or California to be in West Virginia. They visit West Virginia and tell us they’ve been missing out of such an experience for years. One of the best offsets of workcamps is our ability to bring in thousands from all 50 states and visit Marshall University, West Virginia University, University of Charleston, West Virginia State University, West Virginia University Institute of Technology, BridgeValley, Mountwest, and community and technical colleges, which makes us one of the largest college recruiters in the state. To consider moving forward with this project, more help is needed. And the help that is needed is due to our increasing median age in the state. There’s always more need for local labor, assistance and funding. More local housing hubs are needed to focus and strategize how to serve our communities with weatherization, housing rehab, demolition, credit counseling, first-time home buyer programs, housing maintenance, refinancing and much more. Hubs could be constructed with neighborhood alliances, associations, residents and housing groups to focus on the needs of the community. Now is the time to prioritize funding, labor and/or assistance with all government agencies, churches, non-profits and neighborhood organizations toward housing revitalization. More often than not, limited or no funds are placed in budgets for housing rehabilitation. One day, we’ll all be senior citizens. It’s inevitable. West Virginia has the second oldest population in the country. We should actively support the workcamps programs as part of our effort to provide habitable shelter to all residents. Wouldn’t workcamps be a useful component in the future?
The Salvation Army Okanagan Central has launched its Gifts of Hope program to help struggling families make the best of Christmas. At the Kelowna and West Kelowna locations, the Salvation Army has set up a toy shop where parents can shop free of charge for stocking stuffers and presents for their kids to open on Christmas morning. Captain Jennifer Henson said families who request assistance will have an appointment with a Christmas case worker to help understand what the family best needs. Toys come from community donations, and the local branch is expecting to see about 1,000 families come shop for gifts. Although the Gifts of Hope program and the Kettle campaign are highlighted during the Christmas season, Henson said the Salvation Army is helping families year round. May Popham knows first hand the support of the Salvation Army after she and her husband both lost their well-paying jobs in just two weeks of each other. Having recently moved from South Africa, Popham said the couple didn't have much in savings and found themselves struggling to pay bills. "We were flying high one minute and down to rags the next," Popham said, noting that she was embarrassed to ask for help worried about being judged. "They listened to our story, we had a shoulder to cry on, and they assisted us in every respect." With Easter Sunday falling on April 20 next year, customers shared their confusion on social media after finding chocolate eggs and hot cross buns already for sale in shops including Morrisons, Tesco and Asda. One user, @Jingle1991, shared an image of Malteser Bunnies in Sainsbury’s on Christmas Eve and pointed out: “Jesus hasn’t even been born yet.” Meanwhile, Gary Evans from Margate shared a shot of Creme Eggs on display in Morrisons in Margate on Boxing Day. “I just think its crazy that everything is so superficial and meaninglessly commercial... (there’s) something quite frantic about it,” the 66-year-old told the PA news agency. Joseph Robinson found Easter confectionary including Cadbury Mini Eggs, and themed Kit-Kat and Kinder Surprise products at his local Morrisons in Stoke-on-Trent on Friday evening. “It’s funny, as they’ve not even managed to shift the Christmas chocolates off the shelves yet and they’re already stocking for Easter,” the 35-year-old admin support worker told PA. “I wish that Supermarkets weren’t so blatantly consumerist-driven and would actually allow customers and staff a time to decompress during the Christmas period.” Asked if he was tempted to make a purchase, Mr Robinson added: “As a vegan it holds no appeal to me!” Mike Chalmers, a devout Christian from Chippenham, Wiltshire, was slightly less critical after spotting a display entitled: “Celebrate this Easter with Cadbury.” “Christmas and Easter are the two centrepoints of the Christian good news story so it’s no bad thing to see the connections,” the 44-year-old said. “It’s about more than shapes of chocolate though!” Marketing consultant Andrew Wallis admitted he was surprised to see Easter eggs in the Co-op in Kilgetty, Pembrokeshire, but added it also illustrates “forward-thinking” from big businesses. “It made me reflect on how big brands are always thinking ahead and planning early,” the 54-year-old from the Isle of Man, who provides marketing advice to the fitness industry, told PA. “My message to retailers would be: while planning ahead is important, it’s also essential to be mindful of consumer sentiment. “Some might feel it’s too early for seasonal products like this but others might see it as a sign of forward-thinking. “Striking the right balance is key to keeping customers happy.”
