Marcus Johnson and Bowling Green take down New Mexico State 61-60

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear will speak next month at one of the world’s biggest economic and political conferences. Held in Davos, Switzerland, the World Economic Forum has routinely drawn some of the world’s most powerful figures and decision-makers. Next year’s conference takes place Jan. 20-24, and Beshear’s office announced Friday that the Kentucky governor will speak there to “address economic success” in the state and more. While in Europe, Beshear will also meet with executives at Acerinox in Spain, the parent company of North American Stainless, which employs more than 1,600 people in Carroll County. High-powered speakers at Davos have included heads of state like President-elect Donald Trump in 2020 , Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2022, Chinese Communist Party Paresident Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former German Prime Minister Angela Merkel. The conference also features several movers and shakers in private industry and nonprofits. Last year’s conference focused on the conflict in Ukraine, artificial intelligence, the future of China and more. The news release framed the visit to the World Economic Forum as a way for Beshear to tout Kentucky on the world stage. “Over the past five years, we’ve worked hard to secure historic economic wins for our families and our state, and we will keep that momentum going by building new, strong partnerships through opportunities like the World Economic Forum. This trip will provide a chance to connect with growing companies that already operate in Kentucky, as well as those that we want to see invest in our state in the future,” Beshear said in the release. Beshear’s presence at the meeting, often referred to simply as “Davos,” will also happen as the governor’s status rises in a Democratic Party that’s looking for a new direction after losing the presidency, Senate and House in this year’s elections. Beshear, 47, is one of several party leaders to receive mention as early contenders for the 2028 Democratic presidential primary. He recently made shortlists at POLITICO and The Guardian . Earlier this year, Beshear was one of a handful of Democrats being considered for the vice presidential nomination alongside Vice President Kamala Harris in her hurried run for the White House. Ultimately, Harris selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and the pair lost to President-Elect Donald Trump and Vice President-Elect JD Vance by a wide electoral college margin and a 1.5-point popular vote margin . Before the Davos news and after falling short of the so-called “veepstakes,” Beshear has been turning heads on the national stage. In the immediate aftermath of Harris’ loss, Beshear wrote a New York Times oped offering “a way forward” for Democrats . He also formed a political action committee in key primary state New Hampshire and was elected as chair of the Democratic Governors Association, a heavy-hitting political and fundraising role. Those moves amount to a solid, but still early, starting place for a potential 2028 bid, according to Democrats with ties to Kentucky. ©2024 Lexington Herald-Leader. Visit kentucky.com .
