NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose to records Friday after data suggested the job market remains solid enough to keep the economy going, but not so strong that it raises immediate worries about inflation . The S&P 500 climbed 0.2%, just enough top the all-time high set on Wednesday, as it closed a third straight winning week in what looks to be one of its best years since the 2000 dot-com bust. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 123.19 points, or 0.3%, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.8% to set its own record. The quiet trading came after the latest jobs report came in mixed enough to strengthen traders’ expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates again at its next meeting in two weeks. The report showed U.S. employers hired more workers than expected last month, but it also said the unemployment rate unexpectedly ticked up to 4.2% from 4.1%. “This print doesn’t kill the holiday spirit and the Fed remains on track to deliver a cut in December,” according to Lindsay Rosner, head of multi-sector investing within Goldman Sachs Asset Management. The Fed has been easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high since September to offer more help for the slowing job market, after bringing inflation nearly all the way down to its 2% target. Lower interest rates can ease the brakes off the economy, but they can also offer more fuel for inflation. Expectations for a series of cuts from the Fed have been a major reason the S&P 500 has set an all-time high 57 times so far this year. And the Fed is part of a global surge: 62 central banks have lowered rates in the past three months, the most since 2020, according to Michael Hartnett and other strategists at Bank of America. Still, the jobs report may have included some notes of caution for Fed officials underneath the surface. Scott Wren, senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, pointed to average wages for workers last month, which were a touch stronger than economists expected. While that’s good news for workers who would always like to make more, it could keep upward pressure on inflation. “This report tells the Fed that they still need to be careful as sticky housing/shelter/wage data shows that it won’t be easy to engineer meaningfully lower inflation from here in the nearer term,” Wren said. So, while traders are betting on an 85% probability the Fed will ease its main rate in two weeks, they’re much less certain about how many more cuts it will deliver next year, according to data from CME Group. For now, the hope is that the job market can help U.S. shoppers continue to spend and keep the U.S. economy out of a recession that had earlier seemed inevitable after the Fed began hiking interest rates swiftly to crush inflation. Several retailers offered encouragement after delivering better-than-expected results for the latest quarter. Ulta Beauty rallied 9% after topping expectations for both profit and revenue. The opening of new stores helped boost its revenue, and it raised the bottom end of its forecasted range for sales over this full year. Lululemon stretched 15.9% higher following its own profit report. It said stronger sales outside the United States helped it in particular, and its earnings topped analysts’ expectations. Retailers overall have been offering mixed signals on how resilient U.S. shoppers can remain amid the slowing job market and still-high prices. Target gave a dour forecast for the holiday shopping season, for example, while Walmart gave a much more encouraging outlook. A report on Friday suggested sentiment among U.S. consumers may be improving more than economists expected. The preliminary reading from the University of Michigan’s survey hit its highest level in seven months. The survey found a surge in buying for some products as consumers tried to get ahead of possible increases in price due to higher tariffs that President-elect Donald Trump has threatened. In tech, Hewlett Packard Enterprise jumped 10.6% for one of the S&P 500’s larger gains after reporting stronger profit and revenue than expected. Tech stocks were some of the market’s strongest this week, as Salesforce and other big companies talked up how much of a boost they’re getting from the artificial-intelligence boom. All told, the S&P 500 rose 15.16 points to 6,090.27. The Dow dipped 123.19 to 44,642.52, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 159.05 to 19,859.77. In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury yield slipped to 4.15% from 4.18% late Thursday. In stock markets abroad, France’s CAC 40 rose 1.3% after French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to stay in office until the end of his term and to name a new prime minister within days. Earlier this week, far-right and left-wing lawmakers approved a no-confidence motion due to budget disputes, forcing Prime Minister Michel Barnier and his cabinet to resign. In Asia, stock indexes were mixed. They rallied 1.6% in Hong Kong and 1% in Shanghai ahead of an annual economic policy meeting scheduled for next week. South Korea’s Kospi dropped 0.6% as South Korea’s ruling party chief showed support for suspending the constitutional powers of President Yoon Suk Yeol after he declared martial law and then revoked that earlier this week. Yoon is facing calls to resign and may be impeached. Bitcoin was sitting near $101,500 after briefly bursting above $103,000 to a record the day before. CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals have found all manner of ways to lose close games this season. Sunday’s can be blamed on a defense that missed tackles and allowed 520 yards of offense, and three turnovers by Joe Burrow. It’s become a familiar story in this disappointing season. Cincinnati (4-8) keeps scoring lots of points but can’t close out games. Seven of the Bengals’ eight losses this year have been by one score. Burrow has stopped talking about the possibility of going on a run and making the playoffs. He’d just like to win another game or two. “Playoffs are the furthest thing from my mind,” the fifth-year quarterback said. “You never know what can happen, so I’ll keep putting one foot in front of the other and try to be the best player I can be for the rest of the season, week in and week out.” The Bengals allowed Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson to throw for a season-high 414 yards and three touchdowns. After Wilson threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown, the Steelers (9-3) scored on seven of their last nine possessions. They didn’t punt until early in the fourth quarter. Burrow lost two fumbles and threw an interception. “We haven’t done enough to earn the win,” coach Zac Taylor said. “It’s a simple as that. It’s nobody else’s fault but our own. We haven’t earned it.” What’s working Turnovers aside, Burrow had another strong game, finishing with 28 for 38 for 309 yards with three touchdowns. Burrow is having a great season statistically, and he hasn’t hidden his disappointment and frustration about Cincinnati’s narrow losses. ... WR Ja’Marr Chase had a touchdown catch to bring his league-leading total to 13. What needs help The defense missed tackles and couldn’t hold off the Steelers, even with Burrow keeping the game close. It didn’t help that LB Logan Wilson (knee) and DT Sheldon Rankins (illness) had to sit out. The Bengals have allowed 34 or more points six times, including in four of the past five games. Cincinnati became the first NFL team to lose four games in a season in which it scored 33 points or more. Stock up RB Chase Brown has been dependable as the featured back since Zack Moss went down with a neck injury. He rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers. He also had three catches for 30 yards. The second-year back has 677 yards rushing and six TDs. “He’s really coming along, improving his game every single week,” Burrow said. “Pass game, run game, running hard, understanding his protection responsibilities. He’s a guy that practices hard, plays hard, and a guy you can count on.” Stock down The Bengals’ coaching staff. Something has got to give. There was no excuse for the defense to play this badly after a bye week. The unit gave up 500-plus yards for the second time this season. Injuries None were reported in the game. Key number 30.3 — The average points per game by the Bengals against teams with a .500 or better record this season. They are 0-7 in those games. Next steps The Bengals will try to regroup before facing the Dallas Cowboys (5-7) next Monday night. ___ AP NFL:Moreover, China's commitment to opening up and reform has helped to integrate the country more closely with the global economy, creating new opportunities for trade, investment, and cooperation. Will Rohit Sharma play in the India vs Australia fifth Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25? Fans might be left with this question after the India national cricket team captain, after showing a lot of promise early on, was dismissed by his opposite number in Pat Cummins as he attempted an aggressive shot. Rohit Sharma, who missed the first Test in Perth due to the birth of his second child, has had a forgettable time in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 with a string of poor scores. And after his dismissal on Day 5 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), fans on social media called for him to sit out of the SCG Test. Rohit Sharma Wicket Video: Watch Pat Cummins Dismiss Indian Captain for Another Low Score in IND vs AUS Boxing Day Test 2024 . Rohit Sharma has not had a good time in Test cricket in 2024. In 26 innings, Rohit Sharma has scored just 619 runs at an average of just 24.76 with two centuries and two fifties. After batting in the middle order in the second and third Test matches, Rohit Sharma reclaimed his opening spot, a ploy that did not work out at all. It will be interesting to see if Rohit Sharma features in the SCG Test. 'Usko Daant Mat Dikha Jyada Yaar' Rohit Sharma's Hilarious Comment to Ravindra Jadeja Caught On Stump Mic During Day 4 of IND vs AUS Boxing Day Test 2024 Goes Viral (Watch Video) . Will Rohit Sharma Play in IND vs AUS 5th Test at SCG? This will be something that will be interesting. While Rohit Sharma's form has been poor, he is still the captain and it will be a bold move if he chooses to drop himself from India's playing XI for the fifth Test against Australia. While there might be speculations that he might or should drop himself, nothing on that record can be said with certainty. The 38-year-old's poor form might cause him to not feature in the IND vs AUS SCG Test match and in such a scenario, Jasprit Bumran can captain the India national cricket team with Shubman Gill also returning to the playing XI. German security and intelligence chiefs are due on Monday to face questioning about the car-ramming attack that killed five people and wounded more than 200 at a Christmas market 10 days ago. They will be quizzed about possible missed clues and security failures before the December 20 attack in the eastern city of Magdeburg, where police arrested the 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist Taleb al-Abdulmohsen at the scene. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, Saxony-Anhalt state officials, and the heads of Germany's domestic and foreign intelligence services are expected to face a closed-door committee hearing in parliament from 1200 GMT. Abdulmohsen is the only suspect in the attack in which a rented BMW sport utility vehicle ploughed through the crowd of revellers at high speed, leaving a trail of bloody carnage. Investigators have yet to declare a suspected motive in the assault that used a motor vehicle as a weapon, which recalled past jihadist attacks, including in Berlin and in the French city of Nice in 2016. Abdulmohsen, by contrast, has voiced strongly anti-Islam views, sympathies with the far right, and anger at Germany for allowing in too many Muslim war refugees and other asylum-seekers. According to unconfirmed media reports citing unnamed German security sources, he has in the past been treated for mental illness and tested positive for drug use on the night of his arrest. The Saudi suspect has been remanded in custody in a top-security facility on five counts of murder and 205 counts of attempted murder, prosecutors said, but not so far on terrorism-related charges. Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who faces elections in February, has declared that Germany needs to "investigate whether this terrible act could have been prevented". "No stone must be left unturned," he told news portal t-online on Friday, echoing similar comments by Faeser. Scholz said that "over the years, there have been repeated clues" about the suspect, adding that "we must examine very carefully whether there were any failings on the part of the authorities in Saxony-Anhalt or at the national level". German media digging through Abdulmohsen's past and his countless social media postings have found expressions of anger and frustration, and threats of violence against German citizens and politicians. Saudi Arabia said it had repeatedly warned Germany about Abdulmohsen, who came to Germany in 2006 and was granted refugee status 10 years later. A source close to the Saudi government told AFP that the kingdom had in the past sought his extradition. Germany has not officially commented on this claim, but would usually deny requests to send people granted asylum back to the country they fled. Abdulmohsen had a history of brushes with the law and court appearances in Germany, media have reported, including for threats of violence. German police have said they had contacted Abdulmohsen in September 2023 and October 2024, and then repeatedly tried but failed to meet him again in December. Police hold such meetings with people deemed a potential threat to make clear they are under close watch and to deter misconduct. Ahead of the German elections, the Christmas market bloodshed has reignited fierce debate about immigration and security, after several deadly knife attacks this year blamed on Islamist extremists. The head of the conservative opposition, Friedrich Merz, wrote that, whether the attacker was a jihadist or an anti-Islam activist, "conflicts are being fought out on German soil... We have to stop this!" bur/fz/bcYang Niu Hua, now a young adult, appeared in court to witness the retrial of her abductor. In a brief statement to the media, she expressed mixed emotions about the proceedings. While relieved that the case was being reexamined, she also expressed frustration and pain over having to relive the traumatic events of her past.

Bathinda: Punjab’s area under cotton cultivation has declined sharply over the last decade, driven by erratic rainfall, extreme temperatures during the growing season, pest infestations, and a shift to more lucrative crops. Union minister of state for textiles Pabitra Margherita highlighted these challenges in a written response to Punjab MP Raghav Chadha in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. To address these issues, the agriculture and farmers’ welfare department has been implementing the Cotton Development Programme under the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSNM) since the financial year 2014-15. This is to enhance the production and productivity of cotton across its 15 major growing states, including Punjab. Increasing minimum support price (MSP) is the first measure, followed by timely water supply from canals, financial support during the pink bollworm infestations, and subsidies on seeds. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) conducted training, field visits, and demonstrations to disseminate best practices for managing pests and diseases. Under the Crop Diversification Programme for the year 2024-25, it conducted 6,000 demonstrations to promote sustainable farming practices . The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) plays a key role in stabilizing cotton prices by procuring crops at MSP when market prices fall below the threshold. However, the volume of procurement has declined significantly in recent years, from 3.56 lakh bales procured in 2019-20 to only 38,000 bales procured in 2023-24. Chadha attributed the decade-long decline in Punjab’s cotton crop to climatic challenges, pest infestations, and soil degradation. He asked the central govt about its plans to provide targeted technological and financial support to address these challenges and promote sustainable cotton farming in the region. Minister Margherita acknowledged the drop and outlined initiatives to aid farmers, including higher MSP and financial relief. We also published the following articles recently Cotton farmers awaiting higher prices amid hopes from new govt Maharashtra's cotton farmers are holding onto their harvest, anticipating a bonus payout from the newly elected government, mirroring hopes raised by pre-election promises for soybean MSP hikes. Despite current private market rates slightly below the MSP of 7,521 per quintal, farmers expect prices to reach 8,000. Lower national yield and rising global rates further fuel this optimism. ICAR nod for 2 cotton research centres in T, ops begins next FY Telangana's cotton research gets a boost with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) approving two new All India Coordinated Research Project Centres. Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University (PJTAU) successfully advocated for these centers after a decade of limited national research involvement. Modi government to purchase all farm produce at MSP, assures agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Rajya Sabha Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan assured Parliament that the Modi government is committed to procuring all farm produce at minimum support prices (MSP). He emphasized the government's policy of calculating MSP with a 50% profit margin over production costs, contrasting it with previous administrations. Former President Jimmy Carter works at a Habitat for Humanity building site Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, in Memphis, Tenn. Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, have volunteered a week of their time annually to Habitat for Humanity since 1984, events dubbed "Carter work projects" that draw thousands of volunteers and take months of planning. Editor's note: Interviews for this story were conducted in February 2023, shortly after former President Jimmy Carter entered hospice care. This story will be updated. While the nation mourned former president Jimmy Carter after his death on Sunday, many had spent time reflecting on his legacy over the months since he entered hospice care in February 2023. In Central Illinois and beyond, the 100-year-old former peanut farmer was remembered as much for his personal likability and humanitarian work as for his tumultuous single term as the 39th president. Here's how some say he will be remembered. Work with Habitat for Humanity Carter first became involved in Habitat for Humanity in 1984, when he and wife Rosalynn worked with their local Habitat organization in Americus, Georgia, according to information from the national Habitat organization. The couple traveled across the globe working on habitat projects, working alongside more than 100,000 volunteers on 4,390 homes in 14 countries. Former President Jimmy Carter talks to the media as they pause from building a Habitat for Humanity house in Violet, La., Monday, May 21, 2007. They were working on the 1,000th Habitat for Humanity house in the Gulf Coast region since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. “We may be able to count the number of Carter work projects and the number of families served by those builds, but we cannot truly quantify the immense impact the Carters have had on Habitat homeowners, staff, volunteers and donors. We will continue to honor President Carter’s legacy through our service to our community,” said Tyler Wiggs, Habitat McLean County’s office manager, in a press release. Carter's legacy will live on, in part through the work done by Habitat organizations across the country, said Jolene Aldus, now executive director for Habitat for Humanity of McLean County. "There's no doubt that President Carter was well liked and loved by many Americans," said Aldus, who was the organization's director of development at the time of the interview in 2023. Carter's influence also helps local Habitat organizations gain a foothold in smaller communities, she said. Popularity increased post-presidency Former President Jimmy Carter appears on ABC-TV's "Good Morning America", Oct. 5, 1983. Carter is often known as a more popular former president than he was a president, two Illinois State University political science professors said. "He more or less invented the modern sense of the post-presidency," said Professor Lane Crothers . That includes Carter's work in the 1990s with the Carter Center in monitoring elections during a period of new democracies emerging during decolonization. Since the 1990s, a lot of the public focus on Carter has shifted to his personal journey as the longest-lived former president, Crothers said. Carter's presidency was difficult for situations outside of his control, Crothers said. Carter inherited a period of high inflation and unemployment and his presidency saw foreign events like the Iranian Revolution and energy crisis. The Democratic Party was also splitting, with Carter being the last Democrat to sweep the Southern states. Former President Jimmy Carter speaks during the reopening ceremony for the newly resigned Carter Presidential Library Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009 in Atlanta. Carter was also celebrating his 85th birthday. Any president, even a perfect one, would have found that those situations challenging, Crothers said. Yet Carter was also seen as indecisive and uncomfortable with the "wheeling and dealing" of politics. Still, Carter left behind some strong legacies from his presidency, said Associate Professor Kerri Milita . She pointed to examples like the beginning of the handover of the Panama Canal and the Camp David Accords. These help return the U.S. to a role as a international diplomatic broker. "He really impacted the international role of the U.S. going forward," Milita said. President Jimmy Carter waves as staff hold up sign proclaiming "We Love you Mr. President" in Washington, Nov. 5, 1980, as the president walks to helicopter for a trip to Camp David, Md. Carter was also the first president to be elected using public funding under the model created in 1974. His campaign reflected who he was as a person, Milita said, something that carried through his presidency. "Carter was one and the same, the president was the man," she said. His campaign as a whole was unlike a lot of others in that Carter did not shy away from making his positions known, Milita said. Ambiguity can be an asset ahead of elections because it makes the candidate's positions harder to attack. "Carter went against the grain on that, and a lot his rhetoric was very clear," she said. While he lost his reelection bid in a landslide to Illinois-born, Eureka College graduate Ronald Reagan, Carter's post presidency has put him in the good graces of many in the state and beyond. "I'm not aware of anyone that has anything bad to say about it," Milita said. PEP GUARDIOLA mounted a passionate defence of Manchester City after Jose Mourinho smeared his six Prem titles. The Special One delivered a withering “I won fairly and cleanly” response to the City boss, who had hailed winning twice as many crowns as his rival. In a reference to the charges of 115 financial rule breaches City face, former Chelsea boss Mourinho said: “I want to win, but I want to win cleanly and fairly. If I can’t win cleanly, I’d rather lose. “ Guardiola told me something like this . . . he won six trophies and I won three. “But I won fairly and cleanly. If I lost, I want to congratulate my opponent for being better than me. I don’t want to win by dealing with 150 cases.” But Guardiola hit back: “He is another one on the huge list who want my team at the bottom, in League One or the Conference. I would say to Jose: We are innocent until proven guilty.” READ MORE FOOTBALL City deny all the charges. Mourinho’s titles were won under the ownership of Roman Abramovich in 2005, 2006 and 2015. But Chelsea’s finances are also being investigated by the Prem after the current ownership reported “incomplete financial information” had been submitted during the Russian’s tenure. Guardiola, 53, added: “With both of our teams, we can sit with Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger for the many, many titles we won. “I’m pretty sure soon they will congratulate us.” Fenerbahce coach Mourinho’s blast comes following Guardiola’s “Jose won three and I won six” comment after holding up six fingers to Liverpool fans following City’s 2-0 defeat at Anfield on Sunday. Most read in Football FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS Six years ago, just before being axed by Manchester United , Mourinho held up three fingers to Reds fans in reference to the three titles he won. Guardiola had said City’s rivals would be “taking the p***” because of his side’s slump. City have only won one game in their last eight in all competitions. After Liverpool’s win, Mo Salah said it might be the last time he faces them at Anfield with his contract running out. It prompted Kop boss Arne Slot to joke: “Maybe Mo knows more about the charges so he doesn’t expect them to be in the Prem next season!” Guardiola responded: “The joke from Arne is his business, not my business. “I’m talking about what I said. If I have offended Jose, I’m so sorry but it was a joke. The fact is he has three and I have six. But the intention was completely fine.” Guardiola, who takes his side to Crystal Palace tomorrow, added: “Normal people don’t talk about results or how many trophies you win.”
