The U.S. Maritime Alliance, which represents port operators and shipping companies and the union representing about 2,400 workers in Baltimore’s port left the bargaining table in New Jersey two days early after reaching an impasse on the issue of automation. The ILA and the maritime alliance came to a tentative agreement after a three-day strike in early October, sending 45,000 dockworkers in East and Gulf Coast ports back to work until Jan. 15. The strike was the second time this year that port operations were significantly disrupted after the port mostly closed for about two months following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in March. When the cargo ship Dali hit the bridge, the span collapsed into the Patapsco River, killing six road construction workers and blocking the shipping channel. In a statement Wednesday, the ILA said talks broke down Tuesday when port employers introduced a plan to implement “semi-automation.” Negotiations were supposed to last four days this week, the union said. “The ILA has always supported modernization when it leads to increased volumes and efficiency. For over 13 years, our position has been clear: we embrace technologies that improve safety and efficiency, but only when a human being remains at the helm,” the union said in the statement. “Automation, whether full or semi, replaces jobs and erodes the historical work functions we’ve fought hard to protect.” The tentative agreement reached in October included a 62% rise in wages over six years, according to the union’s statement. In its own statement Wednesday, the U.S. Maritime Alliance said it was not seeking to eliminate jobs with new technology but to modernize, making workers safer and improving both efficiency and port capacity. “Unfortunately, the ILA is insisting on an agreement that would move our industry backward by restricting future use of technology that has existed in some of our ports for nearly two decades – making it impossible to evolve to meet the nation’s future supply chain demands,” the alliance said. Scott Cowan, president of Baltimore’s ILA Local 333, was unavailable for comment Friday. Maryland Port Administration spokesperson Richard Scher said that while the state agency isn’t directly involved in the negotiations, it is “closely monitoring” the talks and encouraging both parties to make progress toward a final agreement. The Maryland Port Administration owns Baltimore’s main cargo terminals, but private companies run them. “While both sides have been meeting and making progress toward a deal, there is still a lot of work needed to achieve a new contract that satisfies the parties,” Scher said in a statement. “We remain hopeful that an agreement will be reached by the January deadline.” A strike at the port would have a serious impact on the economy, both in Maryland and across the country, experts say. Here's why they think biotech stocks CRISPR Therapeutics (NASDAQ: CRSP) , Summit Therapeutics (NASDAQ: SMMT) , and Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ: VKTX) could become much larger. An underrated stock with two approvals under its belt David Jagielski (CRISPR Therapeutics): If you're looking for stocks with mammoth upside, you might be tempted to look for risky stocks that don't have any approved drugs or treatments yet. But with CRISPR Therapeutics, you already have a stock that has an approved treatment -- it simply isn't far along in its rollout. In December 2023, regulators approved Casgevy, which is a gene-editing therapy the company has been developing with Vertex Pharmaceuticals . It was approved as a treatment for sickle cell disease for patients 12 years and older. Then, a month later, it was also approved to treat people with transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia (for the same age group). Casgevy can be a game changer for patients with these rare blood disorders as it is a one-time functional cure. CRISPR will share in the profits with Vertex on Casgevy (collecting 40% of them), which could potentially help the company get to profitability. Currently, its operations are well funded with CRISPR reporting more than $1.9 billion in cash and marketable securities as of the end of September. For a business that has burned through $92.7 million in cash over the past nine months, that can provide it with a lot of runway and time to grow its operations and work on other treatments in its pipeline. At a modest market cap of just $4 billion, there's a lot of room for CRISPR to get a whole lot more valuable in the future as it scales its operations and Casgevy starts to generate revenue. Buying the healthcare stock now can be a great move for long-term investors. Already showing monster potential Keith Speights (Summit Therapeutics): It's practically unheard of for a company with no product on the market to have a market cap of $14 billion. But Summit Therapeutics is no ordinary company. The drugmaker in-licensed cancer immunotherapy ivonescimab in January 2023. That has turned out to be a brilliant move in retrospect. Earlier this year, Akeso (which originally developed ivonescimab) announced the drug beat Merck 's blockbuster immunotherapy Keytruda in a head-to-head late-stage study targeting non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). How big of a deal was this news? Consider that Keytruda was the world's best-selling drug last year, raking in sales of around $25 billion. Summit owns the commercial rights in the U.S., Canada, and Europe of a cancer immunotherapy that could be even more powerful than Keytruda. Granted, Summit can't ride on the clinical success achieved by Akeso. The company must conduct its own clinical studies to hopefully win approval for ivonescimab in the U.S. and elsewhere. However, that's exactly what it's doing with initial results expected from a late-stage study of the immunotherapy as a second-line treatment for NSCLC in mid-2025. Summit is also evaluating ivonescimab in another late-stage trial as a first-line treatment for NSCLC. Wall Street's consensus is that Summit's share price could soar more than 40% over the next 12 months. I'm not sure if this price target will be achieved, but it wouldn't surprise me if that's an overly pessimistic goal assuming the company announces positive clinical results next year. Summit Therapeutics is already showing monster potential. I suspect it will fulfill that potential if ivonescimab wins U.S. regulatory approval. You can still get in on the ground floor Prosper Junior Bakiny (Viking Therapeutics): Weight-loss management is the hottest therapeutic area in the pharmaceutical industry right now. Although the companies dominating the field are the usual suspects, a notable mid-cap biotech called Viking Therapeutics is looking to make waves in this market. Viking's lead anti-obesity candidate, VK2735, reported excellent results in phase 2 studies. It might still be a few years until VK2735 earns regulatory approval, but Viking Therapeutics is not a one-trick pony. The company is working on an oral version of VK2735 -- something many patients would choose over the weekly injections the original formulation comes with. Furthermore, Viking Therapeutics has another promising weight-loss candidate in preclinical studies . And I have yet to mention the drugmaker's VK2809, an investigational medicine for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis -- a liver disease with obesity as a risk factor -- and Viking's VK0214, an investigational therapy for a rare nervous system disease called X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy. Many smaller drugmakers tend to hyperfocus on a single medicine, a strategy that allows them to avoid spreading their resources thin. Viking Therapeutics, though, is taking a different approach. The company is showing signs of one of the most critical factors successful biotechs need: innovation. There are still risks involved here. Viking's late-stage studies for VK2735 could flop. However, the company is looking increasingly attractive. In a decade, it could join the ranks of highly successful drugmakers. It's not too late to get in on the ground floor. Two leading proxy advisory firms have recommended Religare Enterprises investors Ltd (REL) to vote against giving a fresh five-year term on the company's board to chairperson Rashmi Saluja, further turning the odds against her re-appointment that was already hanging in the balance amidst her ongoing feud with the company's largest shareholders, the Burman family. Religare has issued a rebuttal to the opinion of the proxy advisors, standing behind Saluja. Justifying their call for Saluja's ouster, proxy advisors InGovern and Institutional Investor Advisory Services (IiAS) said that the protracted battle between the Saluja-led management and the Burman family and the resultant litigation could be a distraction for the company's board. InGovern also raised concerns over her compensation of almost 69 crore a year, which it said was much higher than industry peers. "The ongoing scrutiny of Religare raises questions about the effectiveness of governance under her leadership, which reflects poorly on her oversight and governance capabilities," read the InGovern report released over the weekend. "There are also concerns about her compensation practices and adherence to regulatory guidelines regarding executive remuneration." The proxy advisors' opinion was also influenced by the episode of Religare subsidiary Care Health Insurance issuing stock options to Saluja despite a denial from Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai). Shareholders will now put to vote the future of Saluja at Religare at the company's annual general meeting (AGM) on the last day of 2024. In August, Religare had moved the Registrar of Companies to delay its AGM by three months to 31 December. Passing the shareholder muster seems to becoming ever more difficult for Saluja following the proxy advisor report that institutional investors generally rely upon. Religare's largest shareholders, the Burman family, which control 25.12% shares of the company through four entities, are also expected to vote against Saluja's re-appointment. Saluja joined the board of Religare in 2018 as an independent director when the company was in the midst of a crisis that culminated in its erstwhile promoters being impeached. "It is particularly noteworthy that these attempts to question and malign Dr. Saluja and the board come only after the company has achieved remarkable success, transforming from a 17 share price to touching 315, creating substantial shareholder value," read a statement from Religare. "This timing, coupled with the Burmans' pending legal cases that remain unquestioned, paints a clear picture of the motivations behind these recent developments." Regarding Saluja's compensation and the Care Health Insurance ESOPs, Religare said that the matter was sub-judice. However, it reiterated that the company was in compliance with all legal and regulatory framework. Religare's board, including its independent directors, continues to back Saluja's re-appointment, the statement added. "As REL stands at the cusp of its next growth phase (Religare 2.0), Dr. Saluja's continued leadership as executive chairperson is crucial." While Kentucky claims eight NCAA Tournament crowns and the most wins in college basketball history, Jackson State has never won an NCAA Tournament game and enters the matchup looking for its first win of the season. Impressive tradition and current record aside, Kentucky (4-0) returned no scholarship players from last season's team that was knocked off by Oakland in the NCAA Tournament. New coach Mark Pope and his essentially all-new Wildcats are off to a promising start. Through four games, Kentucky is averaging 94.3 points per game, and with 11.5 3-pointers made per game, the team is on pace to set a school record from long distance. The Wildcats boast six double-figure scorers with transfer guards Otega Oweh (from Oklahoma, 15.0 ppg) and Koby Brea (from Dayton, 14.5 ppg) leading the team. The things that seem to concern some people are the unknown. Tariffs and deportation. Do you share that concern? What is your sense as to how that will go and the impact on inflation is obviously a key component. Potentially both are quite deep and severe. BILL ACKMAN: With respect to immigration, the President is very focused on the safety of the American people and having an open border and not vetting people coming not, not having criminals in the country, that’s a pro-economy move—to get rid of people causing harm. DAVID FABER: That’s 100,000 people, not 11 million, potentially. BILL ACKMAN: Unfortunately, I think it’s more than that. The overarching thing is President Trump will do nothing that interferes with the success of the country, the success of the economy . Other than national defense, that’s his number one issue. I think he’s being very thoughts about tariffs. It is a very powerful tool that can be used to level the playing field. He wants a level playing field. JIM CRAMER: What do we say to someone like Janet Yellen, the Secretary of Treasury, who says, we have to be very careful. Many things can go wrong with what he is talking about. I'm not hearing that from you, obviously. BILL ACKMAN : I would say I'm more optimistic about the economy and the country than I have been in a long time. JIM CRAMER: And you were very early on the bandwagon. Others were not. It seems to be a change of tune. BILL ACKMAN: I don’t know anyone opposed to the business plan of this next administration. And it is a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy. At the backdrop is that you have a Fed lowering rates and inflation under control. You have the FTC, which will be more thoughtful about allowing transactions to happen. That is very bullish for markets. We talk about it all the time. We have the wealth effect. The biggest investment for most people today is the pension or the stock market-related portfolio. Housing prices going up. So, meaningful increases in asset values in a short period of time. That has a pro-economy effect. A lot of these are pro-secular in a positive way for the economy. I think it makes sense that he chose the spot to accept his Time Magazine cover. CARL QUINTANILLA: You can imagine one of the negative things to get written will be that this is optically about Wall Street and not Main Street . Although the president talked about that these are the companies that employ people and he wants people that want to go to work in the morning. BILL ACKMAN: I think most of the country understands that the more successful businesses are, the more the stock market goes up. And the more wages rise, the more job growth, and the more opportunity, and the more businesses that come to the country. It lifts all. I think the President got elected because of a large, wide base that includes low-income people in the country. That is what he feels a responsibility to. DAVID FABER: You are an investor. I'm curious, given your outlook broadly speaking, are there any sectors that you think will benefit in particular from the incoming administration? BILL ACKMAN: I think it is good for the economy. It is good for moderating inflation. It is good for the U.S. I had the chance to talk to Doug Burgum, the Secretary of the Interior. There are a lot of things we can do geopolitically . Being able to offer LNG to the Koreans, for example, something we haven’t been able to do. Very important for that small country that feels very vulnerable. These are things that we can do to improve relations and help us on trade. Howard Lutnick will be a strong advocate for promoting the United States and trade in a thoughtful way. CARL QUINTANILLA: The ECB cut 25 today. Lagarde said growth is slowing. Do you think Europe responds in a conciliatory way or is there a retaliatory way to their response? BILL ACKMAN: I think Europe is in a very vulnerable position. I think the economy generally, the United States, they need to have important, strong relationships with the United States. They have no choice. I think they will operate that way. I'm very bullish on America. I'm kind of bearish on Europe. And I think they need to make some fairly dramatic changes politically and otherwise. One of the more powerful charts, look at the market cap of companies, the number of companies above $500 billion or whatever here versus Europe.
