Ahmad al-Sharaa, who leads Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the group leading the new authority in Syria, made the remarks in an interview with Saudi television network Al-Arabiyya. It comes almost a month after a lightning insurgency led by HTS overthrew President Bashar Assad's decades-long rule, ending the country's uprising-turned civil war that started back in 2011. Al-Sharaa said it would take time to hold elections because of the need for Syria's different forces to hold political dialogue and rewrite the country's constitution following five decades of the Assad dynasty's dictatorial rule. Also, the war-torn country's battered infrastructure needs to be reconstructed, he said. “The chance we have today doesn’t come every 5 or 10 years,” said al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani. “We want the constitution to last for the longest time possible.” Al-Sharaa is Syria's de facto leader until March 1, when Syria's different factions are set to hold a political dialogue to determine the country's political future and establish a transitional government that brings the divided country together. There, he said, HTS will dissolve after years of being the country's most dominant rebel group that held a strategic enclave in the country's northwest. Earlier, an Israeli airstrike in the outskirts of Damascus on Sunday killed 11 people, according to a war monitor, as Israel continues to target Syrian weapons and military infrastructure even after the ouster of Assad. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the airstrike targeted a weapons depot that belonged to Assad’s forces near the industrial town of Adra, northeast of the capital. The observatory said at least 11 people, mostly civilians, were killed. The Israeli military did not comment on the airstrike Sunday. Israel, which has launched hundreds of airstrikes over Syria since the country's uprising turned-civil war broke out in 2011, rarely acknowledges them. It says its targets are Iran-backed groups that backed Assad. Unlike his criticism of key Assad ally Iran, al-Sharaa hoped to maintain “strategic relations” with Russia, whose air force played a critical role in keeping Assad in power for over a decade during the conflict. Moscow has a strategic airbase in Syria. The HTS leader also said negotiations are ongoing with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in northeastern Syria, and hopes that their armed forces will integrate with the Syrian security agencies. The Kurdish-led group is Washington’s key ally in Syria, where it is heavily involved in targeting sleeper cells belonging to the extremist Islamic State group. Turkish-backed Syrian rebels have been clashing with the SDF even after the insurgency, taking the key city of Manbij, as Ankara hopes to create a buffer zone near its border in northern Syria. The rebels attacked near the strategic northern border town of Kobani, while the SDF shared a video of a rocket attack that destroyed what it said was a radar system south of the city of Manbij. NASSAU, Bahamas — Justin Thomas was long off the tee and made a few long putts on the back nine to overtake Scottie Scheffler with a 6-under 66 and build a one-shot lead Saturday over golf’s best player going into the final round of the Hero World Challenge. Thomas is trying out a 46-inch driver — a little more than an inch longer than normal — that he previously used for practice at home to gain speed and length. He blasted a 361-yard drive to 8 feet on the par-4 seventh hole and led the field in driving distance. But it was a few long putts that put him ahead of Scheffler, who had a 69. Thomas was on the verge of falling two shots behind when he made an 18-foot par putt on the par-3 12th hole. On the reachable par-4 14th, he was in a nasty spot in a sandy area and could only splash it out to nearly 50 feet. He made that one for a most unlikely birdie, while behind him Scheffler muffed a chip on the 13th hole and made his lone bogey of a windy day. Scheffler never caught up to him, missing birdie chances on the reachable 14th and the par-5 15th. Thomas hit his approach to 3 feet for birdie on the 16th after a 343-yard drive. Scheffler made an 18-foot birdie putt on the 16th to close within one. Scheffler missed birdie chances on the last two holes from the 10-foot and 15-foot range, while Thomas missed an 8-foot birdie attempt at the last. “I had a stretch at 13, 14, 15 where I felt like I lost a shot or two there, but outside of that I did a lot of really good things today,” Scheffler said. Thomas hasn’t won since the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills, and a victory at Albany Golf Club wouldn’t count as an official win. But the two-time major champion has made steady progress toward getting his game back in order. Golf Channel Staff , Golf Channel Staff , “I’m driving it great. I’ve had a lot of confidence with it,” Thomas said of his longer driver. “I feel like I’ve been able to put myself in some pretty good spots going into the green. I’m still not taking advantage of some of them as much as I would like, but that’s golf and we’re always going to say that.” Thomas was at 17-under 199 and will be in the final group Sunday with Scheffler, who is trying to end his spectacular season with a ninth title. Tom Kim put himself in the mix, which he might not have imagined Thursday when he was 3 over through six holes of the holiday tournament. Kim got back in the game with a 65 on Friday, and then followed with 12 birdies for a 62. He had a shot at the course record — Rickie Fowler shot 61 in the final round when he won at Albany in 2017 — until Kim found a bunker and took two shots to reach the green in making a double bogey on the par-3 17th. Even so, he was only two shots behind. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley (68) was four back. “Feel like I’ve been seeing signs of improvement, which is what you want and that’s all I can do,” Thomas said. “I can’t control everybody else or what’s going on, I’ve just got to keep playing as good as I possibly can and hope that it’s enough come Sunday.”Azenta SVP Ginger Zhou sells $19,674 in stock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Voters dejected by the presidential election results need to find a way to give back and remain involved, Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday as they celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Clinton presidential library. The former president urged audience members in a packed theater to remain engaged and find ways to communicate with those they disagree with despite a divisive political time. The two spoke about a month after former President Donald Trump's win over Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election. “We’re just passing through, and we all need to just calm down and do something that builds people up instead of tears them down,” Bill Clinton said. Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state who was defeated by Trump in the 2016 election, said she understands the next couple of years are going to be challenging for voters who don't agree with the decisions being made. "In addition to staying involved and staying aware, it’s important to find something that makes you feel good about the day because if you’re in a constant state of agitation about our political situation, it is really going to shorten your life," she said. The Clintons spoke during a panel discussion with journalist Laura Ling, who the former president helped free in 2009 when she was detained in North Korea with another journalist. The event was held as part of a weekend of activities marking the of the Clinton Presidential Library's opening in Little Rock. The library is preparing to of its exhibits and an expansion that will include Hillary Clinton's personal archives. Hillary Clinton said part of the goal is to modernize the facility and expand it to make it a more open, inviting place for people for convene and make connections. When asked about advice he would give for people disappointed by the election results, Bill Clinton said people need to continue working toward bringing people together and improving others' lives. “If that's the way you keep score, then you ought to be trying to run up the score,” he said. “Not lamenting the fact that somebody else is winning a different game because they keep score a different way." “And in addition, figure out what we can do to win again,” Hillary Clinton added, eliciting cheers. The program featured a panel discussion with cast members of the hit NBC show “The West Wing” and former Clinton White House staffers. The weekend amounted to a reunion of former Clinton White House staffers, supporters and close friends, including former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and adviser James Carville. McAuliffe said he and Carville ate Friday at Doe's Eat Place, a downtown restaurant that was popular with Clinton aides and reporters during Clinton's 1992 White House run. He said he viewed the library and its planned expansion as important for the future. “This is not only about the past, but it's more importantly about the future," McAuliffe said. “We just went through a very tough election, and people are all saying we've got to get back to the Clinton model.” Andrew Demillo, The Associated Press

Tributes have poured in for an “inspirational leader” who was killed by a shark while on holiday with his family. Luke Walford, 40, was bitten by a shark while fishing on Saturday afternoon on Australia ’s Great Barrier Reef and despite paramedics rushing to the scene at Humpy Island on the Queensland coast, in Australia, he could not be saved. Four others have been attacked by sharks in Queensland in 2024, according to an incident tracker. But Mr Walford is the only victim to die from his injuries in the Sunshine State. Situated near the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, the spot he was at was in the Keppel Bay Islands National Park. Police are preparing a report for the coroner. Mr Walford was a youth pastor for the Cathedral of Praise and school chaplain at Heights College in Rockhampton. Queensland MP for Rockhampton, Donna Kirkland, described him as a “wonderful man” who had died in tragic circumstances. "A family friend, not only to my own family but countless others. He was an inspirational leader as a children's and youth pastor," she said in a statement. "My prayers and heartfelt condolences are with his beautiful family and indeed the many who will be devastated, as I am, at this news." While fellow Queensland politician Nigel Hutton said: “The thoughts and prayers of our community go out to the Walford family." In a statement to Facebook , the Cathedral of Praise church in Rockhampton said Mr Walford died while doing something he loved. “I’ve had the privilege of watching Luke grow from a child to a remarkable young man,” a member of the church said. “I dedicated him as a baby, and over the last 10 to 13 years, I’ve witnessed his incredible contributions as part of our church staff. He was truly a beloved figure, especially among our young people, children, and the entire congregation. Our prayers are with Luke’s family, especially his wife, his mother, and all his relatives.” Many other people have also left tributes on social media with one person stating: “What an incredible man who left an incredible legacy", another agreed: “What an incredible impact he had in his lifetime – an impact that is still unfolding” and a further said: “This man was the most generous person I have ever met with his time to all those around him."Josh Gottheimer trades in Microsoft options, buys and sells various stocks

Jimmy Carter Dies: Longest-Living U.S. President Was 100claims it has broken the link between favourable weather conditions and an influx of , as the government embarks on its mission to crack down on to the UK. The party’s analysis of small-boat crossings indicates that people-smugglers are showing signs of being put off crossing on “red days” – when low wind and calm waters make it easier to cross the Channel. It comes despite there having been a higher number of days with calmer conditions in the six months since the party took power than during the same period in both 2023 and 2022. The average number of arrivals per “red day” was 262.8 from July to 23 December 2024, compared with 360.8 in the final six months of last year, 383.8 in 2022, and 286.2 in 2021. Labour Party insiders claimed that the figures show it has broken the link between better weather and more migrant crossings, adding that the government’s strategy is “designed to ensure that the UK’s border security is no longer at the mercy of either the weather conditions or the smuggling gangs, as it has been since the crossings began in 2018”. They said: “In 2023, the previous government celebrated a quiet end to the year in terms of arrivals that was entirely because of the record-low number of ‘red days’. “This year, despite a final quarter with the highest number of ‘red days’ on record, we are seeing signs – in comparison with previous years – that the disruption of the smuggling gangs is beginning to have an impact.” Labour pointed out that the first six months of this year, when the Conservative Party was still in power, saw a record number of small-boat arrivals despite the number of good weather “red days” being lower than any previous year in which such crossings took place. This meant that the ratio of arrivals to red days in the first half of the year was also the highest on record. In the second half of 2024, by contrast, the number of “red days” is set to be the highest recorded in recent history – but the ratio of small-boat arrivals to red days is set to be the lowest, the party said. It comes as more than 450 people made the dangerous crossing over the English Channel in small boats on Christmas Day, according to Home Office figures. Data updated on Thursday indicated that 451 migrants arrived on 25 December on 11 boats. The last time vessels carrying migrants are known to have arrived was on 14 December, when 160 people arrived in three boats. The figures take the total number of crossings in 2024 to 35,491, around 21 per cent higher than last year, but about 22 per cent down on 2022. The Labour Party has promised to “smash the gangs” and prevent illegal migration by clamping down on the individuals that smuggle refugees across the Channel. However, the party has been accused of continuing the ’s so-called “hostile environment” approach to after the hailed a new crackdown on immigration crime this month. In December, the government announced that nearly 13,500 had been removed from Britain since the election, as well as pledging to put £8m towards technology for immigration enforcement operations such as raids and arrests. It comes after Labour previously pledged that it would return more people who do not have a right to stay in the country by the halfway point in its first year in office than in any other six-month period since 2018. While the government said the figures show it is on track to deliver on its returns pledge, which would need to be met by early January, campaigners have hit out at the approach, comparing it to that of the previous Conservative government. Julia Tinsley-Kent, head of policy and communications at the Migrants’ Rights Network, told : “They fail to understand that people are forced into making dangerous crossings because safe routes do not exist. “Punishing migrants without permission to work or reside fails to address the fundamental failures within the immigration system that continuously pushes migrants into exploitative conditions because they can become undocumented so easily.” A Home Office spokesperson said: “We all want to end dangerous small-boat crossings, which threaten lives and undermine our border security. “The people-smuggling gangs do not care if the vulnerable people they exploit live or die, as long as they pay. We will stop at nothing to dismantle their business models and bring them to justice.”

In what he dubbed "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Failing to Elect a House Speaker Quickly," Pergram explained that, "The problem has been percolating for a while." "It’s been subterranean. Lurking underneath the surface. Not necessarily perceptible. Except to those who follow Congress closely," he said of the upcoming fight for Johnson to keep his position. Johnson's most significant barrier, like Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) before him, is math. "If there are 219 Republicans and four vote for someone besides him - and all Democrats cast ballots for Jeffries, the tally is 215-214. But there’s no Speaker. No one attained an outright majority of all Members casting ballots for someone by name. 218 is the magic number if all 434 Members vote," he wrote on Thursday. Also Read: When the jackboots come, what will matter more? That kind of number puts a hold on Congress. Without a Speaker, the GOP can't swear in new members. Earlier this week, it finally occurred to members and lawmakers that without a speaker in place on Jan. 6, there can't be a 2024 election certification either. McCarthy forced 15 votes before he was elected to lead the House, but it didn't last, with several fellow Republicans ousting him just ten months after he took office. Without a consensus around Johnson, there will be vote after vote until a Speaker is elected. "A failure to certify the Electoral College on the day it’s supposed to be completed - especially after the 2021 experience - is playing with fire," wrote Pergram. "Such a scenario would again reveal another, never-before-considered vulnerability in the fragile American political system." Things could get interesting if there's no Speaker by noon on Jan. 20, according to experts. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are out of office, but if there's no certification, it would mean the Speaker would get the post. Without a Speaker, however, it would move to Cabinet officials. None of the new ones will have been confirmed or sworn in. So, it would ultimately fall to the Senate Pro-Tempore of the U.S. Senate, which is currently Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA). That changes with the new GOP-led Senate where 91-year-old Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) would take over. Unlike in the House, the presiding officer can swear in Senators and that body continues to function when Congress is in chaos. See Pergram's full explainer here.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is calling on backcountry enthusiasts to use added caution when heading out into avalanche terrain following the Christmas holiday. Colorado is heading into a more dangerous period for avalanche risk than the state has seen since the end of November, state avalanche officials wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday evening, Dec. 25. “A change in the weather calls for a change in the avalanche danger,” the Colorado Avalanche Information Center wrote in the social media post. “With the widespread nature of our weak layer, your ability to trigger avalanches will increase as soon as a new, cohesive slab builds on the snowpack’s surface.” The avalanche danger is expected to rise almost everywhere in the state heading into the weekend, according to state avalanche officials. Exactly how quickly and how much the avalanche danger rises will depend on how much snow accumulates and how hard the wind blows. A prolonged period of stormy and windy weather is expected to last into the New Year. The Colorado avalanche officials say it will be “tricky” to predict how the weak layers in the snowpack will respond to the cumulative load. “This is a good time to reset the mindset and treat the next few days like you are heading into the mountains for the first time this season,” Colorado avalanche officials said. “Keep your eyes peeled and ears open. Pay attention to signs of instability like cracking and collapsing. These have been absent recently, and when we notice them again, that’s a clear sign to stick to low-angled slopes for safer travel in the mountains. “ For the most up-to-date avalanche forecast is available at Colorado.gov/avalanche .HEC launches national faculty development program at UVAS Lahore
