While there are plenty of worrisome ideas in that manifesto, one in particular — dismantling the federal apparatus that monitors weather and collects climate data — could prove particularly dangerous for places at perpetual risk of severe, destructive weather. It wasn’t long after Trump secured victory that some of his prominent supporters crowed Project 2025 would, in fact, form the foundation for policy aspirations in a second term. This was after Trump insisted month after month he had nothing to do with the document and it wasn’t connected to his campaign. The about-face on Project 2025 may be chalked up to excessive revelry at an improbable election win rather than a wholescale reversal by the once and future president. However, some of the policies Trump has touted since Election Day, such as gutting the civil service or using the Department of Justice to serve vengeance on his political opponents, now appear very much in play. While those are deeply troubling, a less prominent part of the 922-page document concerns those parts of the federal government focused on weather, climate and environmental protections. Project 2025 calls for breaking up the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, calling it “a colossal operation that has become one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry and ... harmful to future U.S. prosperity.” The NOAA contains six offices, including the National Weather Service, the National Ocean Service and Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, and has an annual budget of about $6.6 billion. Together, they provide Americans critical weather information and essential data about the climate that is invaluable to researchers and scientists. Trump, of course, does not believe in climate change, despite mountains of rigorously vetted evidence that it is occurring and accelerating. He has called it a hoax perpetrated by China in an effort to undercut the U.S. economy and has promised to pursue policies that will likely contribute to the problems costal residents see with every high tide. One doesn’t need to be a climatologist to recognize flooding in our region has worsened over time or to see it is more pervasive, frequent and destructive than ever before. Yes, subsidence, or the sinking of the land, plays a role, but rising sea levels due to warming ocean temperatures are having a measurable, and indisputable, effect. The argument, by Trump and the Project 2025 authors, that it can be willed away by disrupting research or limiting data is not only nonsensical, it’s dangerous. It will ensure communities such as ours, at the front lines of the battle against flooding, will be less prepared for what’s coming. That is also true of the Project 2025 proposal to outsource weather forecasting to private companies, such as AccuWeather. The National Weather Service routinely saves lives through its accurate predictions, as anyone who’s evacuated in the face of a hurricane or sheltered from a tornado can attest. The fact that the NWS doesn’t have a profit motive — that it’s only beholden to the public — is a large part of what makes it a trustworthy source of reliable information accessible to all Americans. Trump won the presidency squarely, and Americans preferred his vision for this country more than his opponent’s. It’s certainly fair to expect he will seek to enact his agenda, which could bring radical changes to how the federal government operates. One could even argue some reforms may be well overdue. But anything that undercuts the important work of NOAA, seeks to dismantle the NWS or undercut critical climate research would put Americans at grave risk and should be fiercely opposed by our region’s congressional delegation.Anderson's 14 lead Furman over Charleston Southern 67-46

The tech company, Evolv, revealed in a public filing that it “received a voluntary document request from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York” on Nov. 1. Recommended Videos It was unclear what the request was seeking. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan declined to comment on the request, which was first reported by the Daily News. In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for Evolv said the company was “pleased to cooperate with all government agencies and regulators who request information from our company.” The Massachusetts-based tech company, whose scanners have also been used at sports stadiums and schools, has faced allegations of misconduct. Last month, Evolv’s board of directors fired its chief executive following an internal investigation that found certain sales had been “subject to extra-contractual terms and conditions.” On Tuesday, the company announced it had resolved a previous probe launched by the Federal Trade Commission last year over allegations of deceptive marketing practices. The company is also under separate investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Despite the legal and regulatory scrutiny, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a pilot program this summer to bring a handful of scanners to the city's subways to deter gun violence. The initiative drew immediate criticism from civil liberties groups who said the searches were unconstitutional, along with questions about its efficacy. In October, the city revealed the scanners did not detect any passengers with firearms — but falsely alerted more than 100 times. At the time, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department said it was still “evaluating the outcome of the pilot” and had not entered into any contract with Evolv.
Is Taiwan Semiconductor’s Stock on the Decline? You Won’t Believe What Analysts Are SayingNew Delhi: Poll strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor received a rude jolt in the debut election for his Jan Suraaj Party, which ended up in the third and fourth positions in four assembly bypolls in Bihar. Having covered a distance of 3,500 kilometres across Bihar districts since 2022 to interact with people on the ground in what was called the Jan Surahj Padyatra, Kishor formally launched his party only last month. On Saturday, as the results poured in, Kishor put up a brave front. His one-month-old party, Kishor asserted, secured 10 percent votes, though the overall performance was not up to expectations. Speaking on the party’s future, he said the Mahayuti bounced back in the Maharashtra assembly election within six months of the Lok Sabha polls, and he has a whole year to prepare for the next assembly election in Bihar. In three of the four assembly seats in Bihar—Belaganj, Imamganj and Tarari—JSP candidates secured the third position. On the fourth seat, Ramgarh, the party came fourth. Promising to give the Bihar electorate clean politics, with leaders of proven efficiency and clean records, Kishor floated the Jan Suraaj Party on October 2—Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. Supposed to be a bi-polar contest between the NDA and the INDIA bloc, the bypolls became a triangular contest when the Jan Suraaj Party fielded candidates in all four seats. Instead of nominating himself as the party president, Kishor appointed a former IFS officer, Manoj Bharti, to the position. During the bypoll campaign, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar addressed four meetings and Lalu Prasad one. Meanwhile, Prashant Kishor addressed 125 meetings, covering four constituencies. In his addresses, he told voters that Lalu and Nitish ruled Bihar for over three decades, and their time was up. “I am giving you an alternative (in the form of JSP) to all those tired of the Lalu and Nitish rule over the last 34 years,” he kept mentioning. He urged the voters to help the new crop of leaders grow. On the other hand, the Jan Suraaj Party faced criticism when three of the four candidates for the bypolls, it turned out, had pending criminal cases against them. The party’s choice of candidates went against Kishor’s promise to give tickets to candidates with a “clean image”. Their defeat in the bypolls now is a jolt for the party. Just after the results became clear, Prashant Kishor addressed a press conference, accepting defeat but adding that he will bounce back. He said, ”We will contest all 243 seats in 2025 assembly seats, with more preparation. It was just a start; we will bounce back after reviewing these results.” Speaking to ThePrint, political analyst Dr Tanvir Aeijaz, vice-chairman of Centre for Multilevel Federalism, New Delhi, said, ”Prashant Kishor is trying to give political alternatives in Bihar, but his ideology is very unclear. Bihar is a politically savvy state where the public knows whom to vote for. There is no clarity on his stand on reservation and privatisation. He only targets mainstream parties, but what alternative will he give? No clarity. So, why would the public be attracted to vote?” Jan Suraaj Party fielded Mohammad Amjad in the Belaganj assembly constituency. With 17,285 votes, he came third. Janata Dal (United) candidate Manorama Devi won the seat with 73,334 votes. In the Imamganj assembly constituency, JSP candidate Jitendra Paswan also stood third, with 37,103 votes. Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular)’s Deepa Manjhi, the daughter-in-law of Union Minister Jitendra Ram Manjhi, clinched the seat by winning 53,435 votes. In the Tarari assembly constituency, Jan Suraaj Party candidate Kiran Singh also could secure only the third position by winning 5,592 votes. With 78,564 votes, BJP candidate Vishal Prashant, son of former MLA and ‘Arrah strongman’ Sunil Pandey, emerged as the winner. In the Ramgarh assembly constituency, JSP candidate Sushil Kumar Singh could manage only 6,513 votes, finishing fourth. BJP candidate Ashok Kumar Singh secured the seat by winning 62,257 votes. Ranchi, Nov 23 (PTI) Following are the results of the significant candidates in the Jharkhand assembly elections: Winners * Hemant Soren -- The Jharkhand CM increased his margin in the Barhait seat as compared to the last assembly elections. He defeated BJP candidate Gamliyel Hembrom by a margin of 39,791 votes this time. In 2019, he had won the constituency by 25,740 votes. He had to resign as the CM in January before being arrested by the ED in a money laundering case. He was released on bail by the high court in June, and in July, he returned as the chief minister of the state, replacing Champai Soren. * Kalpana Soren -- The chief minister's wife won the Gandey seat by a margin of 17,142 votes, defeating BJP's Muniya Devi. She first won the seat in a bypoll on June 4 after it fell vacant following the resignation of JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad. She is credited with revitalising the JMM when her husband was in jail. * Champai Soren -- The former CM, who took over the reign of the state after Hemant Soren's arrest, won the Seraikela seat on a BJP ticket by 20,447 votes. It is the only seat reserved for Scheduled Tribes that the BJP won in this assembly election. He had to quit the CM's post after Hemant Soren was released from jail on bail in June, and eventually, he joined the BJP, expressing discontent with the JMM. * Nisat Alam -- The wife of former Jharkhand minister Alamgir Alam, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case, won the Pakur seat by the highest margin of 86,029 votes. Several central leaders had targeted Alamgir Alam, taken into custody by the ED on May 15, during their public rallies, urging people to "throw out corrupt forces like him". * Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) -- A new force in the political arena of the state, it bagged one seat but made its presence felt in several constituencies. Its founder Jairam Mahato, a Kurmi leader, won the Dumri seat by 10,945 votes. Its campaign focussed on local languages and culture, and unemployment among the youth. Losers * Sudesh Mahto -- The AJSU Party supremo lost the Silli seat to JMM's Amit Kumar by a margin of 23,867 votes. His party contested 10 seats and managed to win only one, that too by a wafer-thin margin of 231 votes. AJSU Party's Nirmal Mahto bagged the Mandu seat, defeating Jai Prakash Bhai Patel of the Congress. * Amar Bauri -- The leader of the opposition came at the third spot in the Chandankiyari seat in Bokaro district. JMM's Umakant Rajak won the constituency by a margin of 33,733 votes, defeating Arjun Rajwar of the JLKM. In the 2019 assembly polls, Bauri defeated Rajak, who contested the seat on an AJSU Party ticket. Rajak switched to JMM ahead of this election after the Chandankiyari seat went to the BJP as per the seat-sharing arrangement within the NDA. * Banna Gupta -- The Congress leader who was the health minister in the outgoing government lost to veteran politician Saryu Roy in the Jamshedpur West seat by 7,863 votes. Roy fought this election on a JD(U) ticket. * Biranchi Narayan -- The BJP chief whip in the last assembly lost to Congress candidate Shwettaa Singh in the Bokaro seat by a margin of 7,207 votes. He was a two-term MLA and campaigned in this election on the plank of development. * Mithilesh Thakur -- The senior JMM leader who held several portfolios in the outgoing government, including Drinking Water & Sanitation and Art & Culture, lost to BJP's Satyendra Nath Tiwari by 16,753 votes in the Garhwa seat. The recently concluded COP29 International Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, highlighted the need for global action against climate change. Amid rapid technological advances, the world faces rising unemployment, environmental degradation and a widening income gap. Despite the wealth generated by increased productivity and artificial intelligence (AI), its concentration in a few hands exacerbates social inequalities, fuelling potential unrest. As nations increasingly adopt the ESG (Environmental, social and governance) framework, the demand for leaders who combine technological expertise with sustainability and social responsibility is growing. Addressing this need, Chitkara University hosted the 17th annual International Accreditation Conference on November 22 and 23 at its Punjab campus. Organised by the Standards for Educational Advancement and Accreditation (SEAA) Trust, the event centred on “Building socially impactful leaders for an ESG-led world.” A Thothathri Raman, chairman of SEAA Trust and conference convener, stressed urgency for integrating ESG principles into higher education. “It is not too late to find meaningful strategies to tackle the current climate crisis,” said Raman. The conference brought together over 38 speakers from the USA, Europe, UAE and India, spanning academia and industry. Discussions focused on how educational institutions can foster leadership aligned with ESG principles to drive sustainability and social equity. The event also showcased the pivotal role of accreditation bodies like AACSB, EFMD, AMBA, BGA, ACBSP, IACBE, SAQS, ATHEA and Peregrine Global, which shared insights on incorporating ESG frameworks into university accreditation processes. Madhu Chitkara, pro-chancellor of Chitkara Universities in Chandigarh and Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, underscored the transformative power of education. “With right inputs and sensitisation, students in higher education can truly make a positive difference in shaping the world of the future,” she said. Sandhir Sharma, vice-chancellor of Chitkara University, supported its mission to drive meaningful dialogue on ESG and higher education. The event served as a platform for higher education institutions to explore innovative solutions for equipping the next generation of leaders to address pressing global challenges. By fostering awareness and imparting practical knowledge on ESG practices, the conference aimed to advance the global movement towards a greener and more equitable world.
