fish oil side effects WASHINGTON—The White House on Dec. 12 sought to allay concerns over recent mysterious drone sightings in New Jersey, stating that they do not pose a threat to U.S. national security. “We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security, or a public safety threat, or have a foreign nexus,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby said during a press briefing. So far, no reported visual sighting has been corroborated, Kirby added. “To the contrary, upon review of available imagery, it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft that are being operated lawfully,” he said. The Frederick County Planning Commission voted unanimously last week to table a proposed rezoning of approximately 101 acres next to Middletown Elementary School from Rural Areas (RA) to Technology-Manufacturing Park (TM), as concerns bought up by members at a recent work session had not been adequately addressed by the developer. “We want to have businesses flourish in Frederick County,” Planning Commission Chairman Tim Stowe told developer Scott Plein following the vote, “but we’ve got to do it right.” No specific use has been designated for the Middletown LLC property, but at the panel’s Nov. 20 work session, commissioners and the developer clashed over issues such as proposed proffers for transportation improvements, viewshed concerns in the rural area which is near Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park and prohibiting certain uses allowed in TM zoning that could negatively impact Middletown Elementary School. Following the work session, the developer made changes to the proffer statement, but it wasn’t enough to sway the Planning Commission. Greenway Engineering Vice President Christopher Mohn, representing the developer, said the proffered amount for two new traffic signals at the nearby intersection of Interstate 81 and Reliance Road had been increased from $200,000 to $280,000 to represent 14% of the up to $2 million it would cost to build the new signals. The 14% was an estimate from a traffic study done by the developer representing the total percent of peak hour trips from the development that would impact the interchange. That figure and study were criticized by commissioners during the work session and again Wednesday night. “You show where you’ve increased the wait times on the northbound lanes after the development by 900%, now how can you say that that’s only 18-19% impact?” commission member Roger Thomas asked. Commission member Mollie Brannon calculated the total percentage increase for wait times and queuing on the southbound and northbound lanes and came up with an increase of more than 60% for both. “How does 16% of traffic cause that much queuing and wait time, are they trains?” Brannon questioned. Proposed uses of the property were another factor. Even though the developer eliminated manufacturing and storage of live munitions as possible uses, numerous other uses in TM zoning were mentioned as inappropriate next to an elementary school. Thomas brought up slaughterhouses and battery manufacturing as examples. While Mohn didn’t really budge on the traffic impact analysis, he did indicate the uses could be revised. “I think there’s no question we could take a look at that and be more selective and potentially remove some of those [uses]... because there are some risks clearly that are associated with that, and arguably not appropriate near an elementary school,” Mohn said. While only six commission members expressed concerns regarding the rezoning application, community members made themselves heard during a public hearing on the matter. Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park Site Manager Karen Beck-Herzog criticized the developer’s viewshed analysis, as she said development of the property could hurt the experience for park visitors a few miles away. “The applicant provided a very basic and limited viewshed analysis,” she said. Jack Owens, a park ranger for the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District, mentioned that the acres eyed for rezoning are designated as core battlefield land in the Cedar Creek area, where the Battle of Cedar Creek was fought during the Civil War. “Rezoning this land without a comprehensive ordinance and codes in place for technology-related infrastructure could lead to irreversible damage to historic landscapes,” he said. The tabling isn’t the end for the rezoning, as it must go before the Frederick County Board of Supervisors within 90 days of Wednesday’s meeting. On Dec. 17, the federal government announced more details about its plans to spend an additional $1.3 billion on border security and associated issues. In ordinary circumstances, the current government would not have even bothered opening up this file. For decades, successive governments have mostly ignored border security and potential threats from other countries. Canadians have seen this not just at the border, or with immigration enforcement, but also with the decline in personnel and equipment for the Canadian military. Governments since the 1960s have mostly ignored these essential elements of nationhood. However, November’s election of Donald Trump as the incoming U.S. president has changed that thinking. Trump has threatened 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian exports to the U.S., starting in January — unless Canada gets serious about border issues and cuts the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S. Surrey and Delta have three border crossings. The two in Surrey are among the busiest in the country, while the Delta crossing goes to the isolated area of Point Roberts. While the federal government has invested in new facilities at the crossings and hired more staff, the way it deals with border issues hasn’t changed in decades. Customs officers (now known as Canada Border Services Agency officers) have no power to deal with any issue that does not occur at an official port of entry. It is up to the RCMP to patrol the rest of the border. In fact, it is rare for RCMP to actually patrol the border. High-tech devices — heat sensors, drones, cameras and other technology — are rarely used, unlike the wide variety of devices the U.S. Border Patrol uses. Many of the incidents involving police or CBSA along the border come as a result of tips from U.S. officers. At one time, Customs officers did have the power to patrol beyond border crossings. Customs officer Clifford Adams was actually shot and killed in Surrey in 1914 when he confronted a suspected U.S. bank robber, away from the border crossing. That power was taken away in 1932. Things have changed since then. More and more people come to Canada from other countries to try and get into the U.S., as was the case with 29 people found inside a rail car of plastic pellets. They were found by U.S. border officials using X-rays in Blaine in August 2023. Trump has raised issues about drug smuggling. While official statistics suggest that drug smuggling from Canada to the U.S. isn’t much of an issue, the reality is that most smugglers aren’t caught. Drugs are smuggled into Canada in containers at ports such as Deltaport, where there is virtually no enforcement, and are then distributed all across Canada and to other parts of the world, including the U.S. The new measures announced Dec. 17 include helicopter surveillance of the border (the RCMP already have a helicopter based in Langley), more use of drones, more dog sniffing teams, and a proposal to the U.S. to jointly set up a North American Joint Strike Force to deal with drug and people smuggling across the border. Maybe it could also deal with guns, routinely smuggled into Canada for use by criminals. There was no word about hiring any more staff, either for CBSA or the RCMP. Nor was there any word about allowing CBSA officers to work outside official entry points, as has been suggested by the union representing CBSA officers. If Canada is serious about border security, it would seem that making maximum use of existing border protection staff would be a good place to start.ENGLEWOOD, Colo. The suspect, identified by police as Luigi Nicholas Mangione, had a gun believed to be the one used in Wednesday’s attack on Brian Thompson , as well as writings expressing anger at corporate America, police said. Here are some of the latest developments in the investigation: Mangione was taken into custody at around 9:15 a.m. after police received a tip that he was eating at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 85 miles (137 kilometers) east of Pittsburgh, police said. Mangione was being held in Pennsylvania on gun charges and will eventually be extradited to New York to face charges in connection with Thompson’s death , said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. In addition to a three-page, handwritten document that suggests he harbored “ill will toward corporate America,” Kenny said Mangione also had a ghost gun, a type of weapon that can be assembled at home and is difficult to trace. Officers questioned Mangione, who was acting suspiciously and carrying multiple fraudulent IDs, as well as a U.S. passport, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference. Officers also found a sound suppressor, or silencer, “consistent with the weapon used in the murder,” the commissioner said. He had clothing and a mask similar to those worn by the shooter and a fraudulent New Jersey ID matching one the suspect used to check into a New York City hostel before the shooting, Tisch said. Kenny said Mangione was born and raised in Maryland, has ties to San Francisco and that his last known address is in Honolulu. Mangione, who was valedictorian of his Maryland prep school, earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a university spokesman told The Associated Press on Monday. He learned to code in high school and helped start a club at Penn for people interested in gaming and game design, according to a 2018 story in Penn Today, a campus publication. His social media posts also suggest that he belonged to the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi. They also show him taking part in a 2019 program at Stanford University, and in photos with family and friends at the Jersey Shore and in Hawaii, San Diego, Puerto Rico, and other destinations. The Gilman School, from which Mangione graduated in 2016, is one of Baltimore’s elite prep schools. Some of the city’s wealthiest and most prominent people, including Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr., have had children attend the school. Its alumni include sportswriter Frank Deford and former Arizona Gov. Fife Symington. In his valedictory speech, Luigi Mangione described his classmates’ “incredible courage to explore the unknown and try new things,” according to a post on the school website. He praised their collective inventiveness and pioneering mindset. Mangione took a software programming internship after high school at Maryland-based video game studio Firaxis, where he fixed bugs on the hit strategy game Civilization 6, according to a LinkedIn profile. Firaxis parent company Take-Two Interactive said Monday it would not comment on former employees. He more recently worked at the car-buying website TrueCar, according to the head of the Santa Monica, California-based company. “While we generally don’t comment on personnel matters, we confirm that Luigi Mangione has not been an employee of our company since 2023,” TrueCar CEO Jantoon Reigersman said by email. Mangione comes from a prominent Maryland family. His grandfather Nick Mangione, who died in 2008, was a successful real estate developer. One of his best-known projects was Turf Valley Resort, a sprawling luxury retreat and conference center outside Baltimore that he purchased in 1978. The father of 10 children, Nick Mangione prepared his five sons — including Luigi Mangione’s father, Louis Mangione — to help manage the family business, according to a 2003 Washington Post report. The Mangione family also purchased Hayfields Country Club north of Baltimore in 1986. On Monday, Baltimore County police officers blocked off an entrance to the property, which public records link to Luigi Mangione’s parents. Reporters and photographers gathered outside the entrance. Luigi Mangione is one of 37 grandchildren of Nick Mangione, according to the grandfather's obituary. Luigi Mangione's grandparents donated to charities through the Mangione Family Foundation, according to a statement from Loyola University commemorating Nick Mangione’s wife’s death in 2023. Police said the person who killed Thompson left a hostel on Manhattan's Upper West Side at 5:41 a.m. on Wednesday. Just 11 minutes later, he was seen on surveillance video walking back and forth in front of the New York Hilton Midtown, wearing a distinctive backpack. At 6:44 a.m., he shot Thompson at a side entrance to the hotel, fled on foot, then climbed aboard a bicycle and within four minutes had entered Central Park. Another security camera recorded the gunman leaving the park near the American Museum of Natural History at 6:56 a.m. still on the bicycle but without the backpack. After getting in a taxi, he headed north to a bus terminal near the George Washington Bridge, arriving at around 7:30 a.m. From there, the trail of video evidence runs cold. Police have not located video of the suspect exiting the building, leading them to believe he likely took a bus out of town. Police said they are still investigating the path the suspect took to Pennsylvania. “This just happened this morning," Kenny said. "We’ll be working, backtracking his steps from New York to Altoona, Pennsylvania,” Kenny said. (TNS) — Hackers claim they have retrieved 17 million patient records, including confidential personal and medical information, in a ransomware attack on PIH Health that has paralyzed operations at three hospitals, the Southern California News Group has learned. The downed computer and most phone systems at PIH Health Downey Hospital, PIH Health Whittier Hospital and PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. Also compromised were urgent care centers, doctors offices and a home health and hospice agency operated by PIH. PIH officials on Wednesday declined to comment on a threatening typewritten letter purportedly faxed by the cyber criminals late last week, saying they are working with a cyber forensic specialist and the FBI to untangle the ransomware attack. The FBI also declined to discuss the ongoing investigation. “Be informed, there was a Ghost in your network!” reads the letter circulated among several PIH employees. “So the ghost has taken your data as evidence, and if you’re not going to cooperate and make a deal, then all your confidential files will be published on the Internet.” Whittier Informed, a grassroots news organization, first reported the letter’s content. SCNG received a copy of the letter from a PIH employee who declined to be identified because they are not authorized to speak about the cyber attack. A similar letter was faxed to PIH Whittier Hospital’s Emergency Department on the evening of Nov. 30 but initially was not taken seriously by staff on duty, the worker said. Purportedly, neither letter contained specific demands and it is unknown if PIH has paid a ransom to the hackers. No known group has taken credit for the attack. The most recent letter states the cyber thieves found PIH’s network “highly vulnerable,” with data stored insecurely on computer servers. The hackers claimed to have stolen about 2 terabytes of materials, including: To validate their claims, the hackers included in the letter a link to screenshots of PIH’s monthly oncology reports and patient billing information. “You have to resolve these issues immediately,” states the letter, which promises to provide PIH a “decryption key” to restore computer servers if its demands are met. “Contact our recovery team to discuss the situation and we’ll provide you with assistance.” PIH said on its website it does not have any information about patient information being compromised and will contact affected individuals if more information becomes available. Meanwhile, patient health records, laboratory systems, pharmacy, radiology, patient registration, and all other information technology systems and tools, including Internet access, are down at the three hospitals, urgent care centers, doctors’ offices, and home health and hospice agency. Phone lines for PIH Health Whittier and PIH Health Downey have been rerouted to operators at PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, where the lines remain functional. “However, we continue to provide care to patients safely using our downtime procedures at all of our facilities,” PIH Health spokesperson Amanda Enriquez said in an email. “As these procedures entail non-electronic documentation, records and communication, staff are having to adjust to changes in their regular workflows.” PIH’s Internet workaround during the cyber crises has been chaotic, said an employee. Staff members are using their personal cellphones to remind patients of appointments and must jockey for temporary hotspots scattered throughout the medical facilities to connect laptops, according to the worker. Additionally, patient information, treatment plans and prescriptions have to be written by hand because electronic recordkeeping is unavailable. “They (PIH) are scrambling,” said the employee, who added that many workers are volunteering for overtime shifts to staff overwhelmed departments. “It’s a day-to-day thing. The majority of locations have not used paper in 15 years.
