On , the French Senate approved tax hikes across a variety of industries, including gambling. While the country about a gambling tax hike earlier this year, it seems like it will be happening after all. The tax changes are a part of the final version of France’s social security budget and align with an overall strategy to raise the tax rates of high profit margin sectors to tackle public deficits. In addition to gambling, these sectors include sellers of tobacco products and sweetened beverages – two other industries often associated with the decline in public health. Lawmakers, however, refrained from introducing a higher tax on the alcohol industry. What Does That Mean for Gambling? As mentioned, France seemed indecisive about a tax hike on gambling, giving the industry a breather. As a result, the sudden decision implement one is a slap for industry stakeholders who were convinced that gambling would have gotten off lightly. French operators already pay a huge tax, giving approximately 55% of their gross gaming revenue to the country. The new raises will vary depending on the vertical but will add to the already significant tax burdens. will not see a tax hike implemented as lawmakers agreed with the industry’s concerns. The higher gambling taxes would add approximately EUR 50 million to the state budget, experts predict. What Do People Think? The surprise gambling tax hike was, as one might expect, met with mixed reactions. The industry was largely dismayed at the change, echoing previous concerns about the market’s integrity. According to industry stakeholders, a gambling tax hike could undermine the legal industry in more than one way, potentially giving more power to unlicensed gambling operators. In addition, it might have an unintended negative effect on the sports sector, which relies on the sports betting industry. There were, of course, also those who rejoiced at the last-minute change in heart. The proponents of the higher tax argued that the gambling industry has been very successful and is the perfect target for a tax hike. Senator Thomas Dossus went a step further, as “parasites” that make the world toxic. The Milwaukee Bucks are likely to make an addition to coach Doc Rivers' rotation via an upcoming trade. The rebuilding Brooklyn Nets fit as a possible trade partner due to their presence of multiple useful veteran wings. Potential trade candidates include Cam Johnson, Bojan Bogdanovic, and Dorian Finney-Smith. The Bucks could benefit from the services of all three, but only one has an important differentiating factor. The Bucks currently have an extreme need for defenders, and Dorian Finney-Smith offers a versatile defensive skillset. He is switchable at 6-foot-6 and willing to guard multiple positions. While rim protection is not a strength, his perimeter defense would greatly improve the Bucks' easily exposed defense. Particularly, his ability to help and recover, along with effectively scrambling in rotations, would fit well alongside the defensive presence of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez. According to a post on X by basketball writer Gery Woelfel , "There have been recent rumors the Bucks have interest in the Nets’ Cam Thomas and Dorian Finney-Smith." Woelfel continued, "According to two NBA sources, the Nets are open to trading anyone on their roster. Said a GM about the Nets: 'They’re getting ready to rebuild — again.'" A Bucks-Nets trade involving Finney-Smith could look similar to the following: Bucks receive: Dorian Finney-Smith, Ziaire Williams, Shake Milton Nets receive: Bobby Portis, Pat Connaughton, MarJon Beauchamp, 2031 second-round pick Along with his defensive impact, Finney-Smith could space the floor for Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. The 31-year-old Nets wing is shooting 41 percent from three on 5.6 attempts per game this season. The 23-year-old Williams would provide much-needed athleticism and would help with the loss of Portis' scoring ability. Meanwhile, Milton would reunite with Rivers. Their tenures with the Philadelphia 76ers slightly overlapped. Milton has left a lasting impression on Rivers after dropping 39 points in 2020 against the Rivers-led Los Angeles Clippers. The Nets would agree to this deal because Finney-Smith would likely opt out of his $15 million player option for next season if he were still in Brooklyn. Also, Williams becomes a restricted free agent at the end of this season. Meanwhile, Portis and Connaughton have player options for next season as Beauchamp will hit unrestricted free agency. Williams may be in the Nets' future plans, but this deal gives them a possible contributor in the unproven Beauchamp, along with a second-round pick. Furthermore, Portis could easily be rerouted for additional draft capital. MORE BUCKS NEWS: Bucks predicted to cut ties with regressing All-Star via trade with Magic

A federal judge ordered him released on bond after his initial court appearance. Gorski didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment. An attorney who represented him after his arrest declined to comment on Gorski's behalf. Authorities allege that during the attack, Gorski climbed scaffolding, breaching police lines, and took photos and videos inside the building. He yelled at officers, pushed against an officer's riot shield and was eventually forced out after being sprayed with a chemical irritant, authorities said. When the FBI interviewed him, Gorski did not claim that he was working as a photojournalist during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and said he didn't bring his professional camera to the Capitol. He told federal agents that he had worked as a photographer for the Chicago Fire Department and for Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign. He has not professionally published any photographs of the Capitol riot, according to the FBI. An FBI agent’s affidavit says some of Gorski’s sports photographs are available through Getty Images and have been “picked up” by The Associated Press and USA Today. Authorities said Gorski has continued to take photos at some local sporting events in Chicago but hasn't published any political photographs in the last five years. Gorski is not an Associated Press journalist and has never been employed by the news organization, said Lauren Easton, AP's vice president of corporate communications. "We have distributed some photos he took for AP’s photo partners and member news organizations," Easton said in a statement. Gorski's resume says he works as a building commissioner for the Village of Norridge, Illinois, and graduated earlier this year from Southeastern Illinois University with a master’s degree in public administration. He attended then-President Trump's “Stop the Steal” rally near the White House on Jan. 6 before he marched to the Capitol in a group of people that included conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and Owen Shroyer , who has hosted a show on Jones' Infowars website. On the west side of the Capitol, Gorski climbed up a wall onto stairs, helped another rioter onto the wall and removed a tarp covering scaffolding, according to the FBI. He climbed up and down the scaffolding before he helped pass a bike rack to other rioters, the agent's affidavit says. Gorski pointed and yelled at police officers outside the building. He also clapped and chanted, “Let us in!” After rioters broke through a police lines and sent officers retreating, Gorski hung a flag over the edge of a balcony. Gorski used his phone to take photos or videos inside a tunnel entrance that police were guarding, according to the affidavit. He screamed at the officers, “This is our house!” as he pushed against an officer’s riot shield, the FBI said. Gorski left the tunnel after several minutes and entered the Capitol through the Senate Wing door, taking more photos or videos inside the building, the affidavit says. An officer had to forcibly move Gorski from a doorway in another part of the Capitol, according to the agent. Gorski retreated after police sprayed him with a chemical irritant. Approximately one year after the attack, the FBI received a tip that Gorski had posted photos of the riot in a group chat with friends. More than 1,500 people have been charged with federal crimes stemming from the Capitol riot.
West Virginia football crumbles in blowout loss to Texas Tech, capping disappointing 6-6 seasonFormer President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100. The 39th president of the United States was a Georgia peanut farmer who sought to restore trust in government when he assumed the presidency in 1977 and then built a reputation for tireless work as a humanitarian. He earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. He died Sunday, more than a year after entering hospice care, at his home in Plains, Georgia. At age 52, Carter was sworn in as president on Jan. 20, 1977, after defeating President Gerald R. Ford in the 1976 general election. Carter left office on Jan. 20, 1981, following his 1980 general election loss to Ronald Reagan. Here's the latest: A somber announcement The longest-lived American president died Sunday, more than a year after entering hospice care , at his home in the small town of Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died at 96 in November 2023 , spent most of their lives. “Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” The Carter Center said in posting about his death on the social media platform X. It added in a statement that he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. A Southerner and a man of faith In his 1975 book “Why Not The Best,” Carter said of himself: “I am a Southerner and an American, I am a farmer, an engineer, a father and husband, a Christian, a politician and former governor, a planner, a businessman, a nuclear physicist, a naval officer, a canoeist, and among other things a lover of Bob Dylan’s songs and Dylan Thomas’s poetry.” A moderate Democrat, Carter entered the 1976 presidential race as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad smile, outspoken Baptist mores and technocratic plans reflecting his education as an engineer. After he left office and returned home to his tiny hometown of Plains in southwest Georgia, Carter regularly taught Sunday School lessons at Maranatha Baptist Church until his mobility declined. Those sessions drew visitors from around the world. Former Vice President Gore remembers Carter for life "of purpose” Former Vice President Al Gore praised Jimmy Carter for living “a life full of purpose, commitment and kindness” and for being a “lifelong role model for the entire environmental movement.” Carter, who left the White House in 1981 after a landslide defeat to Ronald Reagan. concentrated on conflict resolution, defending democracy and fighting disease in the developing world. Gore, who lost the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush, remains a leading advocate for action to fight climate change. Both won Nobel Peace Prizes. Gore said that “it is a testament to his unyielding determination to help build a more just and peaceful world” that Carter is often “remembered equally for the work he did as President as he is for his leadership over the 42 years after he left office.” During Gore’s time in the White House, President Bill Clinton had an uneasy relationship with Carter. But Gore said he is “grateful” for “many years of friendship and collaboration” with Carter. The Clintons react to Jimmy Carter's death Former President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, remember Carter as a man who lived to serve others. “Hillary and I mourn the passing of President Jimmy Carter and give thanks for his long, good life. Guided by his faith, President Carter lived to serve others — until the very end." The statement recalled Carter's many achievements and priorities, including efforts “to protect our natural resources in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, make energy conservation a national priority, return the Panama Canal to Panama, and secure peace between Egypt and Israel at Camp David." After he left office, the Clinton statement said, Carter continued efforts in "supporting honest elections, advancing peace, combating disease, and promoting democracy; to his and Rosalynn’s devotion and hard work at Habitat for Humanity — he worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world,” the statement said.
The Lasting Legacy of Jimmy Carter, Dead at 100The Edmonton Oilers beat the New York Rangers so badly on Saturday that they may have sent the Original Six franchise into a retool. Edmonton got a sorely needed 6-2 victory against the Rangers on Saturday night, dominating all three areas of the ice for most of the night. The Oilers outshot New York by a dominant margin of 21-9 after the first period and eventually fired a total of 40 shots toward Jonathan Quick in the victory. It was the Rangers’ second straight loss and, according to a new report by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, it may have prompted management to look into offloading some pretty big names. “In the aftermath of their 6-2 loss in Edmonton on Saturday, the Rangers have made it very clear they are interested in making moves and shaking up their roster,” Friedman reported on social media. “Among the names indicated are Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba, although other options will be considered.” Those are some pretty big names and trading one, or both, would represent some monumental change in the Big Apple. It’s also a bit strange to think that a Vasily Podkolzin goal has that much pull for an organization to consider such drastic moves. Oilers fans, of course, had a lot of fun with this one. While the Oilers did hand the Rangers a tough loss, it’s a bit unusual to see a 12-6-1 team seemingly panic over a few losses. If this does indeed come to pass, it also wouldn’t be the first time that Connor McDavid’s Oilers have been at least partly responsible for a team’s unravelling. Edmonton practically ended their rival Calgary Flames’ cup window back in 2022, defeating them in a five-game second-round playoff series. Following that loss to the Oilers, Calgary saw Johnny Gaudreau leave in free agency and then traded off superstar Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. It’s certainly a strange scenario, but one that Oilers fans will take a lot of joy in hearing.
