Mumbai, Nov 23 (IANS): A funeral parlour atmosphere prevailed in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) camps of Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (SP)-Shiv Sena (UBT)-plus, after the ruling MahaYuti bulldozer rammed it beyond recognition in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the results of which were declared here on Saturday. Though setting off to an optimistic start, a sombre mood set in around 11 am onwards when the initial trends indicated the possibility of massive reverses for the Opposition that were proved correct within a couple of hours as celebrations erupted by the MahaYuti camps of Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party-Nationalist Congress Party-plus. By late evening (8 PM status), the MVA was hovering around 45 wins, the MahaYuti flying high with around 231 seats and 12 went to the others in the 288-member house. The final count showed that many MVA stalwarts were thrown to the pavement by their MahaYuti rivals in different constituencies, though some newcomers or political greenhorns and a few veterans managed to hold on in the saffron cyclone. From the MVA, the SS (UBT) has emerged as the biggest partner with 20 seats, Congress notching 16 victories and the NCP (SP) with 10 wins. Among those who made it past the winning lines are: Congress’ Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar, ex-Minister Aslam Shaikh, NCP (SP) General Secretary Jitendra Awhad, state President Jayant R. Patil, and their junior colleague Rohit R. R. Patil, 25, became the youngest MLA in the new house, while SS (UBT)’s Aditya Thackeray, his cousin Varun Sardesai, CPI (M)’s Vinod B. Nikole, Samajwadi Party’s Abu Asim Azmi, among others. The shock losers included state Working President M. Arif Naseem Khan, Congress Legislative Party Leader Vijay Balasaheb Thorat, ex-CM Prithviraj Chavan, NCP (SP)’s Yugendra S. Pawar, and other bigwigs from the three allies. The results earned flak from the top MVA leaders including Congress’ Ramesh Chennithala, SS (UBT)’s Uddhav Thackeray, Sanjay Raut, NCP (SP)’s Mahesh Tapase and more, with all suspecting some kind of ‘foul play’ in the outcome. Chennithala said that they are “absolutely surprised”, Thackeray declared, “Its not a wave but a tsunami, yet there was some ‘gadbad’ that needs to be checked” and Awhad pointed out that “many doubts are raised in public minds.” A visibly irked Raut said that “the results are completely unbelievable” and are going contrary to the “mood of the people which we were well aware of”. He alleged various factors including huge money power that may have aided the MahaYuti to score a jumbo victory over the favourite MVA, even as Chennithala assured they would study and analyse the complete results that led to the onslaught before chalking out their future strategy. However, the exuberant MahaYuti allies – Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party-Nationalist Congress Party - have dismissed outright all the allegations, saying they (Opposition parties) “are playing spoilsport and crying after the crushing defeat at the hands of the ‘Ladki Bahins’, ‘Ladka Bhaus’, ‘Ladka Kisan’ and ‘Ladka Voters’ of Maharashtra”.
EL SEGUNDO — Running back J.K. Dobbins suffered a sprained knee during the Chargers’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night and is likely to be sidelined for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday he “didn’t really know how to categorize” the injury, however. “He’s working through something with his knee,” Harbaugh added. The NFL Network, citing an unnamed source, said Dobbins would be out this week. Dobbins gained 40 yards on six carries before he was sidelined in the second quarter of the Chargers’ 30-23 loss on Monday. The Chargers turned to Gus Edwards and Hassan Haskins in Dobbins’ absence in the second half, but relied almost exclusively on their passing game after trailing 14-13 at halftime. The Chargers (7-4) rushed only five times in the second half. Overall, Edwards had nine carries for 11 yards and one touchdown and Haskins had one carry for 3 yards. Quarterback Justin Herbert rushed four times for 29 yards and one touchdown, a 5-yard scramble on the Chargers’ first drive of the game. Edwards’ 1-yard touchdown run came on their final possession. “Gus is heating up,” Harbaugh said. “Great to have him back in there.” Edwards has rushed for 206 yards and one touchdown on 63 carries in seven games, spending four games on injured reserve because of an ankle injury. Harbaugh was uncertain whether Dobbins’ injury would force him onto the injured reserve list and a minimum of a four-game layoff. “Don’t know that yet,” Harbaugh said of the possibility of Dobbins going on IR. Haskins has rushed for 26 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries, primarily playing an impactful role on special teams. Rookie Kimani Vidal, another possible replacement for Dobbins, has rushed for 44 yards on 18 carries and caught three passes for 49 yards and one touchdown. Dobbins has rushed for a team-leading 766 yards (fourth in the AFC) and eight touchdowns on 156 carries. He and Edwards signed with the Chargers in the offseason as free agents after starting their careers with the Ravens. Dobbins, 25, has had an injury-plagued career, but hasn’t missed a game so far this season. His 2023 season ended early after he sustained a torn Achilles tendon in the Ravens’ season opener. Herbert is the Chargers’ second-leading rusher with 211 yards and two touchdowns on 45 carries, most coming on scrambles away from on-rushing defenders. He set a career-high with a 38-yard scramble in the first quarter of the Chargers’ 26-8 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 27. Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. hasn’t played since the Chargers’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, placed on injured reserve because of a shoulder injury. Harbaugh declined to speculate whether Samuel would be sidelined for the remainder of the season, referring questions to Samuel. Samuel isn’t required to speak to reporters while on IR. So, his extended absence has been something of a mystery. However, his absence has opened the door for rookies Cam Hart and Tarheeb Still to move into the starting lineup. Hart is sidelined by an ankle injury that required him to wear a protective boot while watching Monday’s game from the sideline. Still has been a reliable fill-in with 33 tackles and one interception. “No, I don’t expect him back this week,” Harbaugh said of Samuel. Related Articles In somewhat related moves, the Chargers placed cornerback Eli Apple on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury suffered against the Ravens. They also claimed safety Marcus Maye off of waivers. Maye played 11 games this season with the Miami Dolphins, who cut him earlier this week. Maye started three games and had 30 tackles overall for the Dolphins. Wide receiver DJ Chark Jr. started the season on injured reserve, but he hasn’t cracked the lineup consistently after recovering from a hip injury. Chark was active for only one game this season, the Chargers’ Nov. 10 victory over the Tennessee Titans , and he was on the field for only one snap. “The opportunity is there, the opportunity is there,” Harbaugh said of Chark, a seven-year NFL veteran. “I really like what I see. Every week, there’s an opportunity. Opportunities are guaranteed, and DJ has the license and opportunity to take advantage of that opportunity.”Marler to retire from rugby on Friday, a month after quitting international duty with EnglandKamikaze drones, or loitering munitions, are revolutionizing modern warfare with their unique blend of stealth, accessibility, and deadly precision. These drones are difficult to detect, inexpensive to produce, and disturbingly easy to deploy, allowing even smaller groups to access cutting-edge military technology. Designed to loiter in the air before targeting and striking with explosive payloads, they can blend seamlessly into civilian areas, making them particularly hard to counter. This combination of factors has made them a growing threat on the battlefield and a challenge for global security forces. To combat this rising threat, military organizations are developing a range of defensive measures, from advanced radar systems to detect drones early, to electronic jamming technologies that disrupt their communication and navigation. AI-driven defense networks are also being implemented to identify and neutralize drones more effectively. Despite these advancements, the rapid evolution of drone technology and the relative ease of their acquisition mean the threat is far from under control. The race to develop countermeasures is ongoing, as nations strive to adapt to the growing use of kamikaze drones in conflicts around the world.
Nvidia’s upcoming graphics cards have been exposed, just as we edge closer to CES 2025. Key details about Nvidia’s much-anticipated GPU lineup have surfaced, revealing exciting yet daunting specifications for tech enthusiasts. Thanks to a slip by graphics card producer Zotac, the names and specifications of some of Nvidia’s top GPUs have been revealed. The series, codenamed Blackwell, includes the formidable RTX 5090, which is expected to occupy significant space and demand considerable electric power once inside your PC. Insights were gathered from Zotac’s inadvertent leak, initially captured by VideoCardz before the listings were removed. The top-of-the-line RTX 5090 boasts 32GB of GDDR7 memory, an upgrade over the RTX 4090’s 24GB. Consumers can expect this giant to take up to four slots on motherboards, which marks a step up from the triple-slot requirement of its predecessor. Concerning power consumption, Nvidia suggests a power supply unit ranging from 650W to 750W, possibly pointing to a 600W total power draw. The leaked information hints at five specific cards: the GeForce RTX 5090, RTX 5090D, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070. However, there’s no mention yet of more budget-friendly models like the 5060 series. This focus on high-end GPUs may delay the release and announcement of Nvidia’s lower-tier cards, traditionally launched at a later date. For budget-conscious gamers, Intel’s recent entry into the market with their more affordable offerings, such as the B580, might prove a welcome alternative. However, suspense remains for what Nvidia’s 50-series will eventually offer to those pursuing more economical gaming solutions. Get Ready for Nvidia’s Game-Changing GPU Lineup: What to Expect from the Upcoming Blackwell Series As the tech world eagerly anticipates CES 2025, Nvidia’s latest advancements in graphics processing units (GPUs) have recently been thrust into the spotlight. Thanks to a leak by Zotac, we now have a glimpse into the formidable specifications of Nvidia’s forthcoming Blackwell series. This new lineup is poised to redefine the capabilities of PC gaming and content creation. Nvidia Blackwell Series: Key Specifications Unveiled The Blackwell series is headlined by the GeForce RTX 5090, a powerhouse boasting 32GB of GDDR7 memory, outstripping the RTX 4090’s 24GB. This leap in memory capacity is expected to deliver unprecedented performance for gaming and AI applications. However, this increase in power comes with a caveat: the RTX 5090 could occupy up to four slots on motherboards, compared to the triple-slot configuration required by its predecessor. Power Requirements and Efficiency Nvidia’s recommendation of a 650W to 750W power supply hints at demanding power needs, potentially around a 600W total draw. Enthusiasts will need to ensure their systems have the appropriate power infrastructure to handle these new graphics cards, with efficient cooling systems to manage the expected heat output. The Lineup: What’s to Come In addition to the RTX 5090, the leaked details reveal upcoming models like the RTX 5090D, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070. This focused reveal on high-end models suggests that Nvidia’s strategy may initially cater to enthusiasts and professionals, while budget-friendly solutions may follow later. Challenges and Competition The lack of an immediate mention of budget options like the 5060 series might leave some gamers turning to alternatives. Notably, Intel has been making waves in the budget GPU market with offerings like the B580, which provide more cost-effective solutions for gamers. Looking Forward As Nvidia prepares for its official announcements at CES 2025, tech enthusiasts and gamers alike are keenly watching to see how these cutting-edge GPUs will transform gaming and AI-driven creativity. Nvidia’s emphasis on high-performance products may set new standards for what users expect from their computing hardware. Wisely, the expansive Netflix series that just debuted the first eight (of an eventual 16) hour-long episodes deploys the use of a narrator, ensuring that these peculiar, unpredictable words are the first spoken in the show. Watching this, however, was the first time I heard them in Spanish, reminding me that despite my enthusiasm for García Márquez’s work, I’d never actually read it as it was meant to be read. And surely there will be many whose only encounter with One Hundred Years of Solitude will be the television version, despite the 50 million copies sold. (Someone buying a book doesn’t mean they read it; my copy sat on a shelf for more than a quarter of the title’s time.) Those who encounter the story of the seven generations of the Buedía family living in the fictional village of Macondo as television will experience an even more radical translation than written language. That doesn’t mean this isn’t a remarkable production. New technologies García Márquez, nicknamed Gabo in his native Colombia and elsewhere in Latin America, was pretty adamant that a movie could never be made from the work. He told Harvey Weinstein that he would give Weinstein the rights on the condition that the producer “film the entire book but only release one chapter—two minutes long—each year, for 100 years.” This quote, like George Harrison saying “there won’t be a Beatles reunion as long as John Lennon remains dead,” might seem like final words, but don’t count out new technologies (like the deep-pocketed Netflix, and whatever is responsible for zombie Beatles songs like “Now and Then”), as well as the malleability of an artist’s estate. One Hundred Years of Solitude, the series, has been produced in concert with Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha, sons of the author, who maintain rights to their father’s work following his death in 2014 and the death of their mother, Mercedes Barcha, in 2020. Still, there are some Colombians who are pre-boycotting the work on principle. Such extreme fealty is understandable. A possibly true factoid you can read on the internet is that only the Bible has sold more copies in Spanish than the works of García Márquez. Another one, even hazier but just as striking, is that the influential book’s depiction of the Banana Massacre of 1928 was what forced United Fruit to rebrand and change its name to Chiquita. Then there’s the specificity of form. One Hundred Years is a massive, meaty text with frequent swerves into fantasy, prurience, and violence, and makes quick jumps between flashbacks and flashforwards. Then there’s the biggest roadblock for many readers, its intentionally perplexing family tree with a great many of the characters sharing the same name. Surely this confusion means something, you reassure yourself, unsure for the moment which José Arcadio has the spotlight in the middle of another fabulous tale. Indeed, the idea of behavior recurring over long periods of time is central. But filmed, as you are actually seeing it (and seeing faces), a lot of this magic gets lost in the translation—a complaint which goes beyond the expected “hey, that’s not how I visualized Pilar the fortune teller’s house!” gripes. One Hundred Years of Solitude has a narrative far too stuffed to summarize, but I can try. Married cousins José Arcadio and Úrsula decide to leave their village after José Arcadio kills another man while defending Úrsula’s honour. (She has been denying her husband sex, wearing chastity belts despite their raging desires out of fear that any offspring will have pig-like tails.) The dead man then starts hanging out in their home. A ghost story, I suppose, but García Márquez’s approaches the haunting—and every other fantastical element of the story—in a curious and direct manner. The dead man just appears in the house, hanging around, getting blood everywhere, more of a nuisance than a terror. Long journey José Arcadio has visions of a utopian city so he, Úrsula, and others join him on a long journey and eventually put down roots. Their village, Macondo, is totally isolated (indeed, for many of the early chapters you have no clue what year it is), lending each development the heft of importance. “Clearly,” you think, “every character and utterance is meant to be symbolic of mankind’s evolution, as Macondo is nothing if not all of humanity under a microscope.” And surely you can read it that way, or look for analogies in Colombian political history, but to do that too much undercuts the fun of riding along on García Márquez’s roller coaster. And this is precisely why some things work better in a book than in a movie or television adaptation. In prose, the bizarre elements—visions, levitation, impossibly long periods of rain, a character who chews on the walls—take on a humorous and discordant tone when simply stated as everyday fact. When you see it, at least for me, it cheapens it. The best example I can give you is when the town’s founding father, driven to madness after years as an only partially successful alchemist, decides to tie himself to an enormous (and rather symbolic) tree. Heavy oak metaphors have considerably less panache when you are watching them on your screen. The other big change is that, other than the foreshadowing in the famous first line, the series is told chronologically. This is an understandable decision, but it undercuts some of the magic of Macondo, where any stray moment can initiate a relevant jump on the timeline. Still, the production design of the town—a shabby collection of huts that grows into turn-of-the-century elegance—is remarkable, and reportedly one the largest productions in Latin American history. (Three separate towns were created, to represent Macondo’s evolution.) The eight episodes have been split between two directors. Alex Garcia Lopez is a United States-based director of Argentine origin, and an alumnus of hit shows like The Witcher, The Punisher and the recent Star Wars series The Acolyte. Laura Mora Ortega is a Colombian director with a less international resume, but whose work includes the Netflix series Green Frontier. Neither are afraid of One Hundred Years’s more lusty moments (you can set your watch to the regular hammock-based interludes) and when civil war eventually barges into Macondo, there are some heart-pounding battle sequences that don’t hold back on the gore. Visual form Some of the more famous moments from the first half of the novel (or, I should say, first half of the narrative, since the show mostly goes in order) stitch together quite nicely in a visual form. There is a stretch in which a plague of insomnia hits the town, which at first is welcomed. More time to get things accomplished, José Arcadio says. But with a lack of sleep comes confusion, until no one can remember what anything represents, forcing them to leave notes everywhere. (“Don’t Pee In The Streets, People Get Angry” is probably my favorite, because it’s funny but also true.) Eventually, the memory of the townsfolk gets so blitzed that no one can even read anymore, plunging everyone into paranoia and violence. This whole chapter cuts together marvelously in the show. Another moment—among the most emotionally resonant images from the story—is when one character is violently killed, and their blood spills out of their house, down the street, weaving around corners, into another house, and across several rooms until the streak ends at the foot of the deceased’s mother. This is a moment that is not diminished when filmed. However, there are some aspects of García Márquez’s story that are wisely tamped down. A major character (an adult) experiences love at first sight with a 9-year-old girl. His obsession becomes “a physical sensation that almost bothered him when he walked, like a pebble in his shoe,” and he is described in the novel as having fits of asthma just hearing her voice, especially when she calls him “sir.” Egads! He decides he must marry her, and a deal is worked out between the families. She can marry once she’s reached puberty, which occurs for her “before getting over the habits of childhood.” Yikes all around. All I can say is that in the book—in which there are soothsayers and ghosts and the pursuit of the Philosopher’s Stone, not to mention enormous blocks of eloquent prose—these deviations don’t read quite so repulsive as I’ve laid them out here. Inadvertent near-incest To its credit, the show doesn’t erase this section entirely, but it is lessened. When we first meet the character Remedios, she is presented as “very young,” but she doesn’t look 9. I don’t know the age of the actress playing her, but when she later gets her first period (which we witness both as metaphor and reality), a few costume changes age her up considerably. It’s still questionable, but certainly skirts around the ick factor. The same goes for a moment of inadvertent near-incest. (A less inadvertent one awaits in season two, but I don’t know how that will play out just yet.) This loyalty to the text might be why Netflix’s promotional machine has been pretty minimal in the United States. Other than an article this summer in Vanity Fair, most of the press has been geared to the Hispanic market. (There were lines around the block to see the first episodes in Havana, but nothing happened in New York City.) Considering that Netflix’s biggest hit is the South Korean series Squid Game, the fact that One Hundred Years is in Spanish can’t be used as an excuse to keep this exclusively international. There is, however, a lot of content out there, so I’m wondering how much of an impact it will make with U.S. viewers. Will I watch season two? Absolutely, and not just because of the time I’ve already invested. On its own merits, the show is engaging, the performances (particularly Claudio Cataño as Colonel Aureliano Buendía and the mononymous Akima as the feral cousin Rebeca) are quite good. Everything (and everyone) is gorgeous, so the show is a winner from a visual perspective alone. But it may not be a bad idea to take advantage of the intermezzo between seasons and take the book off the shelf before the launch of part two. The series is, after all, only a rough translation. – foreignpolicy.com

The massive victory of BJP-led Mahayuti in Maharashtra indicates a tactical course correction post the Lok Sabha debacle, with factors like RSS' active role in the poll campaign, Ladki Bahin scheme, rise in women voting, and subtle message of Hindutva playing a crucial role. Assembly Election Results Live Updates Maharashtra Election Results Jharkhand Election Results Bypoll Election Results Apart from the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh's help, the shift of focus to women voters and local leadership are also the big reasons for the landslide performance in the assembly polls. As votes are being counted on Saturday, the BJP has so far won 99 seats and led in 34. BJP's ally Shiv Sena, headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde , has bagged 47 seats and led in 10. Another partner, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP pocked 37 seats and led in 4. The huge scale of the rout meant the Maharashtra assembly wouldn't have a leader of the opposition as no party outside the ruling alliance could get the mandatory minimum of 29 seats. During the poll campaign, slogans like 'batenge toh katenge' (divided we fall) and 'ek hain toh safe hain' (united we are safe) were raised by BJP's top leaders apparently aimed at ensuring the Hindu unity, bolstering the BJP's performance in what was supposed to be a tight contest against MVA, analysts feel. In contrast, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi scored 30 seats. Poll managers of the BJP, Shiv Sena, and the NCP went down to the drawing board and initiated corrective measures to turn the tide in the assembly polls. The people's sentiment apparently started changing in Mahayuti's favour when the state budget presented by Deputy CM and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar introduced the 'Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana' offering financial assistance of Rs 1,500 per month to women from financially weaker sections. This scheme was modelled on the MP government's Ladli Behna Yojana, which is believed to have helped the BJP retain power in the last elections by a massive margin. The Mahayuti government formally launched the Ladki Bahin scheme in mid-August and organised programmes for its publicity on a large scale. The growing popularity of the scheme forced the MVA to announce the Mahalaxmi scheme if voted to power, offering Rs 3,000 per month to women. The Mahayuti countered MVA's poll promise with an assurance to raise the Ladki Bahin allowance to Rs 2,100. Political analysts said the BJP's micro-management and course correction post the general election results have paid rich dividends in the assembly polls. Deputy CM and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis raised "vote jihad" and "dharmayudh of votes" themes sensing Muslim vote consolidation in MVA's favour which galvanised loyal BJP voters. Fadnavis latched on to the purported appeal by an Islamic scholar for "vote jihad" against the Mahayuti government and called for a "dharmayudh of votes". Talking about the Mahayuti's stupendous performance, Fadnavis on Saturday said the mandate was against appeasement politics and reflected the people's trust in PM Narendra Modi 's 'ek hain to safe hain' appeal. Addressing a joint press conference in the evening, CM Eknath Shinde pointed out that the three parties had finalised their seat-sharing amicably. "We learnt lessons from the Lok Sabha debacle and took corrective steps," Ajit Pawar said. Senior journalist Prakash Akolkar said the BJP's campaign was powered by RSS which treated the electoral contest as a "do-or-die battle for the BJP in Maharashtra". "The lion's share of this victory goes to the RSS cadres. With the penetration of Hindutva at all levels, including social media, the BJP and RSS made people believe that Hindutva is the main saviour. The 'ek hain to safe hain' agenda and the hatred for Muslims worked," he told PTI. The massive rout meant the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar will struggle to keep their flocks together, he said. Shocked by the MVA's debacle, Thackeray termed the people's mandate completely unexpected and incomprehensible. Senior journalist Jatin Desai said the results were surprising given a palpable sense of "unrest" among people. ''Whoever has travelled extensively in the state noticed tremendous unrest among people, especially farmers for the agrarian crisis. Didn't the farmers think of their MSP and crop produce before casting their vote?" he asked. According to journalist Abhay Deshpande, the "silent wave" in Mahayuti's favour was not sensed by anyone. "The number of Ladki Bahin beneficiaries stood at 2.35 crore. There were 70 lakh additional votes polled as compared to the Lok Sabha elections, out of which 43 lakh came from women voters," he said. Similarly, the Mahayuti alliance played the polarisation gamble against the caste consolidation, which was a decisive factor in the MVA factory during Lok Sabha polls, he added. Congress' in-charge of Maharashtra Ramesh Chennithala also said that the results were unexpected. Senior BJP leader Madhav Bhandari told PTI that the record-break victory was unexpected and unpredictable. "It is a matter of pride. Congress showed arrogance after its Lok Sabha election success. But its politics of Muslim appeasement boomeranged and 'ek hain toh safe hain' slogan percolated deeply," he felt. Senior Congress leader Ratnakar Mahajan said the election result contradicts the public mood. "There was so much anger against Fadnavis and Shinde. Did the angry voters step out to vote?" he wondered. WASHINGTON, United States (AFP)— A former US lawmaker who was Donald Trump’s first pick to run the Justice Department regularly paid for lurid sex sessions at drug-fuelled parties, including with a 17-year-old school girl, according to a scathing congressional report released Monday. Matt Gaetz also regularly used cocaine and ecstasy, and bought marijuana from his Capitol Hill office, said the 37-page document, the culmination of a long-running probe by the House Ethics Committee. “The committee determined there is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favors or privileges, and obstruction of Congress,” panel investigators wrote. Gaetz has repeatedly denied wrongdoing — pointing to the Justice Department’s decision not to bring charges against him in 2023 after a criminal probe — and the report came out as his lawsuit to block its release was denied. Congressional investigators found that the 42-year-old Republican broke multiple Florida laws on sexual misconduct, although they cleared him of federal sex trafficking violations. The report listed payments by Gaetz totalling more than US$90,000 to 12 women “likely in connection with sexual activity and/or drug use” between 2017 and 2020. They focused on a 2018 trip to the Bahamas during which Gaetz is alleged to have had sex with four women and to have taken party drug ecstasy, a Schedule I substance in the same legal category as heroin. The ex-congressman is an incendiary figure with few friends on Capitol Hill, but was a staunch Trump loyalist and a favorite of the president-elect’s ardent supporters. Tech billionaire Elon Musk — who is Trump’s incoming “efficiency czar” but has inserted himself into all manner of decision-making in the presidential transition process and in congressional politics — lauded Gaetz as America’s “Hammer of Justice” when he was nominated. “Matt Gaetz has 3 critical assets that are needed for the AG role: a big brain, a spine of steel and an axe to grind,” Musk posted on his social media platform, X. “He is the Judge Dredd America needs to clean up a corrupt system and put powerful bad actors in prison.” Gaetz resigned from Congress in November after Trump nominated him for US attorney general — but that was after he had just been reelected for the session beginning in January and there is nothing to stop him taking up his seat. The allegations against Gaetz had been openly discussed for years before he was tapped by Trump, and he withdrew from consideration when it became clear he lacked the backing from Republicans to win Senate confirmation. Gaetz posted a series of tweets refuting some of the report’s allegations, including that he paid for sex. “Giving funds to someone you are dating — that they didn’t ask for — and that isn’t ‘charged’ for sex is now prostitution?!?” he posted on X. “There is a reason they did this to me in a Christmas Eve-Eve report and not in a courtroom of any kind where I could present evidence and challenge witnesses.” Women told congressional investigators they were paid for sex at parties and other events by Gaetz and his friend Joel Greenberg, a former tax collector in Florida who was jailed for 11 years. One encounter allegedly involved a 17-year-old, who told the committee she had sex with Gaetz twice at a July 2017 party. “Victim A recalled receiving $400 in cash from Representative Gaetz that evening, which she understood to be payment for sex. At the time, she had just completed her junior year of high school,” the report says. All the women who testified said the sexual encounters with Gaetz were consensual. Gaetz denied having sex with a minor in written responses to the committee.Costco Gold Membership is up for grabs at a shockingly low price — but only for a short timeSL, India consolidate bilateral relations
