Limited time offer > Speaking to The Daily Telegraph Young admitted he has considered making a switch to rugby union in the past, but remains committed to the Roosters. “There were a few rumours lately, but I haven’t really had any talks or anything like that,” Young told The Daily Telegraph. “I have considered it in the past, and have had some talks with a couple of clubs before but I came out here. “It’s not even like that I want to play union, it’s just an option that I have considered.” Young’s manager Michael Cincotta told the Telegraph in England earlier this year that there is strong interest for his client from rugby union, which far trumps the appeal of the 13-man game in the Northern Hemisphere. “There’s always been strong interest from rugby union for Dom,” Cincotta said. Dom is box office.” Young is contracted to the Roosters for the next three seasons until at least the end of 2027. The 23-year-old has scored 63 tries in 73 NRL games after three seasons with the Knights, including 20 tries in 22 games in his first season at the Roosters. He has also scored nine tries in six Tests for England since his debut at the 2022 World Cup. Young debuted for Huddersfield in 2019, but played just two games in the Super League before joining the Knights in 2021. The Roosters can’t afford to lose another backline star after Joseph Suaalii and Joseph Manu both left the club for rugby union. Meanwhile, Terrell May, Luke Keary and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves have all departed left the club, and hooker Brandon Smith and Sam Walker will be unavailable until at least the middle of the 2025 season as they recover from ACL injuries.

Researchers have spotted what they believe is the first ever malware capable of infecting the boot process of Linux systems. "Bootkitty" is proof-of-concept code that students in Korea developed for a cybersecurity training program they're involved in. Though still somewhat unfinished, the bootkit is fully functional and even includes an exploit for one of several so-called LogoFAIL vulnerabilities in the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) ecosystem that Binarly Research uncovered in November 2023. Bootkits operate at the firmware level and execute before the operating system loads, allowing them to bypass the Secure Boot process for protecting systems from malware during startup. Such malware can persist through system reboots, operating system reinstallation, and even physical replacement of certain parts, like hard drives. Researchers at ESET who analyzed Bootkitty after finding a sample on VirusTotal just last month described it as the first UEFI bootkit for Linux they have come across. That's significant because, until now, bootkits — the most notorious of which includes BlackLotus and FinSpy — have been Windows-specific. "[Bootkitty's] main goal is to disable the kernel's signature verification feature and to preload two as yet unknown ELF binaries via the Linux init process (which is the first process executed by the Linux kernel during system startup)," ESET researchers Martin Smolar and Peter Strycek wrote. Binarly, which also analyzed Bootkitty, found the malware to contain an exploit for CVE-2023-40238, one of several image parsing LogoFAIL vulnerabilities in UEFI that the company reported last year. The Bootkitty exploit leverages shellcode embedded within bitmap image (BMP) files to bypass Secure Boot and get the OS to trust the malware, Binarly said. The vendor identified Linux systems from multiple vendors as being vulnerable to the exploit, including those from Lenovo, Fujitsu, HP, and Acer. "While this appears to be a proof-of-concept rather than an active threat, Bootkitty signals a major shift as attackers expand bootkit attacks beyond the Windows ecosystem," Binarly wrote . "The operating system bootloaders present a vast attack surface that is often overlooked by defenders, and the constant growth in complexity only makes it worse." The UEFI — and prior to that the BIOS ecosystem — has been a popular target for attackers in recent years because of how malware operating at that level can remain virtually undetectable on compromised systems. But concerns over UEFI security really came to a head with the discovery of BlackLotus, the first malware to bypass Secure Boot protections even on fully patched Windows systems. The malware took advantage of two vulnerabilities in the UEFI Secure Boot process, CVE-2022-2189, also known as Baton Drop, and CVE-2023-24932 , to install itself in a virtually undetectable and unremovable manner. The relatively easy availability of the malware and Microsoft's struggles in addressing it, prompted a call from the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) for improved UEFI protections . "Based on recent incident responses to UEFI malware such as BlackLotus, the cybersecurity community and UEFI developers appear to still be in learning mode," CISA noted at the time. "In particular, UEFI secure boot developers haven't all implemented public key infrastructure (PKI) practices that enable patch distribution." ESET found Bootkitty to contain capabilities for modifying, in memory, functions that normally verify the integrity of the GRand Unified Bootloader (GRUB), which is responsible for loading the Linux kernel during startup. However, the specific functions that Bootkitty attempts to modify in memory are supported only on a relatively small number of Linux devices, suggesting the malware is more proof of concept than an active threat. Bolstering that theory is the presence of several unused artifacts in the code, including two functions for printing ASCII art and text during execution, ESET said. The Korean students who developed the bootkit informed ESET after the security vendor published its analysis. ESET quoted the students as saying they had created the malware in an effort to spread awareness about the potential for bootkits becoming available for Linux systems. Details of the malware were only supposed to have become available as part of a future conference presentation. However, a few samples of the bootkit ended up being uploaded to VirusTotal, they noted. Jai Vijayan is a seasoned technology reporter with over 20 years of experience in IT trade journalism. PULLMAN — In his third full season as Washington State’s head coach, Jake Dickert has established a way to try to retain as much of his roster as he can. After the season, he meets one-on-one with each player to talk about their strengths, their weaknesses. Dickert asks for feedback on other coaches, himself, on the program at large. “I love those times,” Dickert said. “But unfortunately, there is now an extreme business side of those conversations. Trust me, I’ve been Zooming and communicating with families because I think the one thing the second parties are doing is really getting the families — maybe over the kids nowadays.” By second parties , Dickert means ambassadors from other programs, who check out the Cougars’ program and look for players to pry away with lucrative NIL offers. As the head honcho of a program that often finds itself behind on the NIL front, at least relative to the power players in today’s college football ecosystem, Dickert has not been coy about his feelings about losing his guys to bigger programs. When the transfer portal officially opens on Monday, Dickert is expecting to lose 15-20 players, he said. Some will be walk-ons who are figuring out their next move, he said, and others will be players buried on the depth chart who could get on the field sooner elsewhere. Still others, Dickert said, will be players who are “offered large sums of money.” The Cougs have already lost one player, true freshman running back Wayshawn Parker, who announced Thursday he’s entering the portal. “It’s tough. It’s really tough,” Dickert said. “We show them why they should be here. We show them our developmental process. We build those relationships. But it’s just tough at the end of the day, when you find a kid, you offer them, you’re the only big school to do that. Once you develop them, people come down and do some things with that. “So we’re just in a weird place at college football. It’s not just happening to us. It’s happening all the way around the country, and at some point we gotta get some real guardrails on building teams, because from a general manager standpoint, you never know who’s gonna be coming and going that year, and the position group could be decimated.” Will QB John Mateer be one of the players the Cougars lose to the portal? It’s certainly at the top of the mind of Dickert and the entire program. Mateer practiced as usual on Friday, the first day of the Cougs’ bowl practices. Earlier this week, former WSU offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle took the same job at Oklahoma, an SEC power with the kind of NIL muscle to lure players away. Could Arbuckle bring Mateer with him? The Cougars are doing everything they can to prevent that and hang on to Mateer, who finished the regular season leading the country with 44 total touchdowns, 29 through the air and 15 on the ground. Dickert said his recent conversations with Mateer have been “really good,” adding that the team is putting together a “package” for Mateer, likely indicating collaboration with WSU’s NIL team, the Cougar Collective. “We’ve done an amazing job of putting together a package for John that I think is fair, and he knows his value here,” Dickert said. “He knows how much he’s loved. I think it really means something for him to be here. I don’t take that for granted. I also take a step back and wanna mentor him, wanna help him, wanna navigate him through this. The talks have been really, really positive, and we’ll continue to navigate that as they go.” WSU is currently operating without an offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator. Earlier on Monday, before Arbuckle’s departure became official, WSU announced that defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding had been fired. That leaves the Cougs without any coordinators for their upcoming bowl game, which will likely be the Holiday Bowl in San Diego or the Las Vegas Bowl, both of which are set for Dec. 27. In those coaches’ absence, the defensive-minded Dickert will call plays on defense, and quarterbacks coach John Kuceyeski will call plays on offense. Kuceyeski does have experience as an OC, working that role at Eastern Illinois from 2019-2021, and he previously worked as director of player personnel at Western Kentucky, where he overlapped with Arbuckle. “He’s worked with John all year,” Dickert said. “I think they’re in good sync, good rhythm. Love what he has done in-series, in-game, when he was helping Coach Arbuckle. I think he’s got that vision, and he’s coordinated before, so excited about those responsibilities.” But Dickert also needs to find full-time OC and DC replacements. For those roles, he said, he has interviews set up for this weekend with in-house and external candidates. Dickert offered no potential timeline on those decisions, saying he “won’t be in a hurry.” “Just when it’s right,” Dickert said. “Got a bunch of interest for this job. I think that’s the cool part when things happen — this isn’t just people that need jobs. It’s people that understand what we’ve done here, how we’ve done it on both sides of the ball, the culture that we’ve built here, and I think that’s really important. So I’m excited about those guys, and we’ll find the right pieces for our staff.”None
When it comes to embodying chilling characters in some of the best horror movies , Bill Skarsgård is no stranger to going all-in. From his sinister portrayal of one of the creepiest clowns in film , Pennywise in It Chapters 1 and 2, to his recent transformation into the iconic Count Orlok in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu , the actor has a knack for bringing nightmares to life. But it turns out that the Swedish-born star’s on-screen intensity isn’t just for audiences—his co-star, Nicholas Hoult , admitted that he found the Boy Kill’s World vampiric appearance terrifying on set. Speaking with our sister site Games Radar+ at the UK premiere of Nosferatu , the former X-Men: First Class star shared how Bill Skarsgård’s physicality and commitment to his role created a genuinely intimidating presence on set. Talking with the outlet, he shared: Bill's very intimidating. He's a physical presence. You know? He's a tall, big guy. Then he had the big costume on top of that, and his hat, and the makeup, and the physicality he brought to the character, but also the intensity. It's a wonderful performance. I'm excited for people to see it. The entire Nosferatu cast seems to agree with Hoult, as many of them have gone on record sharing how Skarsgård’s character is the scariest thing they've ever seen . And, having seen the movie, I tend to agree. The intensity the actor brings is exactly what fans of him, Eggers, and the horror genre have come to expect. Eggers is known for his meticulous world-building in films like The Witch and The Lighthouse (available to stream with a Max subscription ). His take on the classic 1922 silent film is no different, as it is a haunting reimagining of the original story with enough originality, especially in its final act, to keep new and old audiences on the edge of their seats. With Bill Skarsgård in the role of Count Orlok, the titular vampire pursuing Lily-Rose Depp ’s Ellen Hutter, it is genuinely one of the most disturbing cinematic experiences I’ve had with any of the 2024 movie releases . Skarsgård has more than earned his reputation as a master of monstrous transformations. After haunting our dreams as the shapeshifting Pennywise, he’s now tackled one of horror’s most iconic roles: Count Orlok His take on the character is fresh, unapologetically dark, and uniquely grotesque, setting it apart from past interpretations of the material. Critics are already heaping praise on Nosferatu , calling it one of the best vampire movies of recent years, and much of that acclaim stems from The Crow actor’s spine-chilling, unrecognizable performance. Frankly, it’s no shock that he managed to intimidate even his co-stars on set—it’s just what the Barbarian alum does best. You can witness Bill Skarsgård’s nightmare-inducing portrayal of Orlok by heading to your local theater, as Nosferatu is currently playing in theaters. Check out our 2025 movie schedule to see what upcoming horror movies are headed to the big screen in the new year. CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News
