A gallery participating in the Scope Art Show in Miami Beach was asked by fair organizers to remove a portrait of Donald Trump, which depicts the Republican president-elect mid-speech with the word “huge” overlaid in neon letters. The Miami-based gallery L Kotler Fine Art said it had been “forced” to remove the piece by artist Shyglo, titled “HUGE” (2016), and is now auctioning the work online instead, where it is listed with an estimate of $15,000 to $30,000. “May the conversation continue,” the gallery said in an Instagram story. A representative for Scope Art Show denied that the work was targeted on the basis of its content, telling Hyperallergic that the gallery is one of at least 40 exhibitors asked to rehang or remove artworks that “weren’t part of their original accepted proposal.” Art galleries are required to submit an application months in advance with a booth presentation proposal including the artworks they plan to show. The property booking company said it had introduced measures which use machine learning to identify and block potentially higher-risk bookings of entire homes from being made. The technology looks at signals such as the length of the trip, type of listing, distance from a guest’s location and when the reservation is being made to help determine whether it could be a higher risk. If flagged as high risk, guests are either blocked from booking, or redirected to alternative accommodations on the platform. The company started using the restrictions in 2020, and says that since then it has seen a significant drop in the rate of parties reported to the firm. Airbnb said that last year alone nearly 74,000 people were blocked from making a booking, including around 7,800 in the UK. This included around 2,900 bookings in London and 470 in Manchester. Amanda Cupples, Airbnb general manager for the UK and northern Europe, said: “While issues are rare, we want to do our part to help reduce the risk of unauthorised and disruptive parties. “Airbnb is committed to supporting hosts and the communities they live in, and we hope these defences allow guests, hosts and neighbours to celebrate the holiday with added reassurance.” The firm said the measures would be in effect in the run-up to and over New Year in countries and regions around the world, with restrictions in place on one to three-night reservations. ATLANTA (AP) — Jimmy Carter, the peanut farmer who tried to restore virtue to the White House after the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War, then rebounded from a landslide defeat to become a global advocate of human rights and democracy, has died. He was 100 years old . The Carter Center said the 39th president died Sunday afternoon, more than a year after entering hospice care , at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died in November 2023, lived most of their lives. The center said he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. As reaction poured in from around the world, President Joe Biden mourned Carter’s death, saying the world lost an “extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian” and he lost a dear friend. Biden cited Carter’s compassion and moral clarity, his work to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless and advocacy for the disadvantaged as an example for others. “To all of the young people in this nation and for anyone in search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning – the good life – study Jimmy Carter, a man of principle, faith, and humility,” Biden said in a statement. “He showed that we are a great nation because we are a good people – decent and honorable, courageous and compassionate, humble and strong.” Biden said he is ordering a state funeral for Carter in Washington. A moderate Democrat, Carter ran for president in 1976 as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad grin, effusive Baptist faith and technocratic plans for efficient government. His promise to never deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia. “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me. I would not deserve to be your president,” Carter said. Carter’s victory over Republican Gerald Ford, whose fortunes fell after pardoning Nixon, came amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over race, women’s rights and America’s role in the world. Propelled in 1976 by voters in Iowa and then across the South, Carter ran a no-frills campaign. Americans were captivated by the earnest engineer, and while an election-year Playboy interview drew snickers when he said he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times,” voters tired of political cynicism found it endearing. The first family set an informal tone in the White House, carrying their own luggage, trying to silence the Marine Band’s traditional “Hail to the Chief" and enrolling daughter, Amy, in public schools. Carter was lampooned for wearing a cardigan and urging Americans to turn down their thermostats. But Carter set the stage for an economic revival and sharply reduced America's dependence on foreign oil by deregulating the energy industry along with airlines, trains and trucking. He established the departments of Energy and Education, appointed record numbers of women and nonwhites to federal posts, preserved millions of acres of Alaskan wilderness and pardoned most Vietnam draft evaders. Emphasizing human rights , he ended most support for military dictators and took on bribery by multinational corporations by signing the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He persuaded the Senate to ratify the Panama Canal treaties and normalized relations with China, an outgrowth of Nixon’s outreach to Beijing. But crippling turns in foreign affairs took their toll. When OPEC hiked crude prices, making drivers line up for gasoline as inflation spiked to 11%, Carter tried to encourage Americans to overcome “a crisis of confidence.” Many voters lost confidence in Carter instead after the infamous address that media dubbed his “malaise" speech, even though he never used that word. After Carter reluctantly agreed to admit the exiled Shah of Iran to the U.S. for medical treatment, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun in 1979. Negotiations to quickly free the hostages broke down, and then eight Americans died when a top-secret military rescue attempt failed. Carter also had to reverse course on the SALT II nuclear arms treaty after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979. Though historians would later credit Carter's diplomatic efforts for hastening the end of the Cold war, Republicans labeled his soft power weak. Reagan’s “make America great again” appeals resonated, and he beat Carter in all but six states. Born Oct. 1, 1924, James Earl Carter Jr. married fellow Plains native Rosalynn Smith in 1946, the year he graduated from the Naval Academy. He brought his young family back to Plains after his father died, abandoning his Navy career, and they soon turned their ambitions to politics . Carter reached the state Senate in 1962. Nearly 100 years ago, with the United States suffering through the Great Depression, a federal program to put Americans to work was created. Originally called the Emergency Conservation Workforce, it became the Civilian Conservation Corps. Camps were set up across the country, including Camp Macedonia, which was not, as one would think, at Macedonia Park but actually at Kent Falls. Marge Smith, curator of Kent Historical Society, led a program on the camp at Kent Senior Center last week. She said a visit years ago to the CCC Museum in Stafford Springs featured a wall of photos depicting camps, but the spot under Kent was blank. Smith and some other Kent residents got to know Charles Bigelow, who spent time at the camp and had kept records of the experience. He designed a diorama of the camp, which Smith brought to the talk, as well as a copy of a grainy photo that now fills the once-empty space at the CCC Museum. Bigelow told them how the men spent their time at the camp, where their main projects were building a stone wall, roads and trails, and glazed tile drains. In their spare time, they read, cooked and gardened. They were paid $25 per month and obligated to send $20 back home. For Bigelow, like many other members of the corps, the experience was life-changing. As someone who had a somewhat at-risk youth, he found structure, discipline and purpose at the camp. If rules were broken, the punishment was cleaning out grease traps. Most were happy to have work and earn some money. About 200 residents, all men, inhabited Macedonia Camp. Smith said Bigelow was injured working on a large wall and when he came to visit many years later, he was wheelchair-bound from that long-ago accident. “His one wish was to touch that wall,” Smith said, describing how those in attendance lifted his wheelchair so he could fulfill that desire. Happy birthday, Falls Village firefighters CANAAN – With a lively, heartfelt rendition of “Happy Birthday to You” filling the Colonial Theatre followed by the cutting of a cake, the yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Falls Village Volunteer Fire Department came to an end Sunday. The event began with the screening of a documentary by Yonah Sadeh, who was raised in Falls Village and now works in the film industry in New York City. He interviewed firefighters, ambulance crew and members of the ladies’ auxiliary. They all spoke of the huge commitment and how rewarding it is to help neighbors in times of need. Richard and Mary Lanier recounted how EMTs saved his life in an emergency. He said if the crew hadn’t taken the time to carefully move him, he could have died. Tracy and Mary Atwood described how firefighters saved their house during an attic fire that could have destroyed the entire premises had they not acted swiftly. Sadeh, in introducing the film, said he appreciated that the volunteers shared their stories with him. “It’s wonderful having volunteers doing such hard work,” he said. “I’m glad I got to know them.” Andrea Downs and Thom Wilson addressed the large audience. Downs expressed pleasure at how much has been accomplished in the last year, including attracting several new members. Wilson noted Sunday was the actual day the department formed 100 years ago. Celebrate the holidays in Kent KENT – The Christmas season arrived here Saturday with St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church’s annual Holiday Fair. The parish house was filled with shoppers seeking a huge variety of decorations, jewelry, attic treasures, baked goods and Vermont cheddar cheese. A popular part of the event each year is the raffle, where hopefuls purchase tickets for such prizes as baskets of wine, a half cord of firewood, a large picnic basket – with the description “worthy of Tanglewood,” referring to the Mass. concert venue – and a slew of gift certificates to local businesses. Lunch consisted of chili, broccoli-cheddar soup, mac and cheese, and hot dogs. The lunch crowd was strong. Saturday also was opening day of the church’s Christmas tree sale that is held next to the church for the next few weeks. Marel Rogers, chairwoman of the event, said the fair always kicks off the holiday season in Kent. “We provide one-stop shopping,” she said, “and we don’t take credit cards, so there are no post-holiday bills from here.” Ski swap and sale SALISBURY – Salisbury Winter Sports Association’s annual Ski Swap and Sale is scheduled for Dec. 7 at the Lakeville Hose Company firehouse on Brook Street.
