The 10-year yield was at 6.7873% as of 10:00 a.m. IST, compared with its previous close of 6.7852%. "With benchmark bond yield around par levels, there is no trading interest from any segment, and people are just waiting to enter the new quarter and new year," trader with a private bank said, referring to the bond's coupon of 6.79%. The daily average trading volume has dropped to around 381 billion rupees ($4.46 billion) over the last two weeks from 719 billion rupees in the prior fortnight, data from the Clearing Corp of India showed. Traders were also monitoring the movement in the rupee, which plummeted to record lows over the last few days, and could trigger further foreign outflows in the bond market. Foreign investors have net sold bonds linked to JPMorgan's emerging market debt index worth 27 billion rupees over the last three weeks, after net purchase of 94 billion rupees in the first week of the month. The widening banking system liquidity deficit has also made investors cautious of avoiding portfolio losses at the end of the fiscal year's third quarter. Globally, the 10-year U.S. yields moved higher on Friday and was at 4.60% in Asia hours, as investors pare debt holdings ahead of the year-end and await the new year uncertain about interest rate cuts. The underlying sentiment in the world's largest economy has turned cautious since last week when the Federal Reserve lowered its rate cut forecast for 2025 to 50 basis points from 100 bps earlier. The odds of a pause in January are at 89%, according to CME's FedWatch Tool. Ackman has a concentrated investment style. His fund typically has 10 holdings or less, and when he finds something he likes, he bets big on it. One stock he recently loaded up on is Brookfield ( BN 1.29% ) -- which also happens to be one of my favorite stocks and top holdings. Here's why I think buying Brookfield was a wise move that will likely make Ackman even more money. Betting big on Brookfield Ackman has been buying shares of Brookfield hand over fist. His stake in it has multiplied five-fold since June to 22 million shares. That position is currently worth over $1.7 billion, which is about 13% of his hedge fund's assets, making it the top holding. Brookfield isn't a household name among most investors, and the Canadian investment manager's operation might seem a bit complex at first glance. It has three core businesses: Asset management : The company owns a 73% interest in a leading alternative investment manager, and its Brookfield Asset Management business has over $1 trillion in assets under management . Wealth solutions : The company provides a variety of insurance products and services, including annuities, personal and commercial property and casualty insurance, and life insurance. Operating businesses : Brookfield has operating businesses in renewable power ( Brookfield Renewable ), infrastructure ( Brookfield Infrastructure ), business and industrial services ( Brookfield Business ), and real estate. In many ways, Brookfield is like a mix between Berkshire Hathaway and Blackstone . Similar to Berkshire, it has insurance operations and invests capital on behalf of investors into operating businesses (and its funds). Meanwhile, it also owns a large stake in a leading alternative asset manager that rivals Blackstone in size and expertise. Brookfield also has a strong leader, CEO Bruce Flatt, whom many have called the Warren Buffett of Canada. Like Buffett, Flatt is a value investor with a phenomenal track record of allocating capital to grow shareholder value. He's been with the company since 1990 and has been CEO since 2002. Over the last 20 years, Brookfield has delivered annualized total returns of 16%. That handily beat the S&P 500 and Berkshire Hathaway, both of which delivered annualized returns of about 11% during that period. What makes Brookfield such a smart investment right now Flatt believes Brookfield's best days lie ahead of it. Its long-term target is to deliver annualized returns of 15% or more over the long term. The company is in a better position than ever to achieve that. A few factors support that view. First, Brookfield believes the market is undervaluing the company today. Management estimates that the stock should trade at around $84 per share based on the earnings capacity of its core franchises. That's significantly above its current price of less than $60 per share. On top of that, Brookfield has significant embedded growth. The company expects to grow its earnings per share by more than 20% annually over the next five years. That forecast is based on the expected continued expansion of its asset management and wealth solutions businesses, the carried interest in its investment funds (its share of the profits), and its ability to adeptly allocate the excess capital generated by its operations. Brookfield expects to produce a cumulative $47 billion, or $30 per share, of free cash flow over the next five years, giving it plenty of cash to allocate toward growing shareholder value. The growth drives the company's belief that it will increase its underlying value to $176 per share by 2029 . That would amount to an annualized growth rate of 16% from its current estimated value and more than 25% from its actual share price. Ackman is right; Brookfield is a brilliant buy Brookfield and its subsidiaries are among my top holdings. I've held shares for more than a decade and routinely add to my position because Flatt is such a fantastic wealth creator. Like him, I believe Brookfield's best days are still ahead of it, which is why I think Ackman's decision to load up on shares is a brilliant move. I expect that decision will make him and his investors a lot of money.

Known as the “ grocery tax ”, the new legislation will see retailers and manufacturers charged per tonne of packaging materials they use in a bid to encourage businesses to use less. The measure is one of several designed to help the UK reach its Net-Zero pledge and reduce waste but senior industry figures have warned that it could have the opposite effect. Under the scheme, retailers and manufacturers will be charged more for using plastic wrapping compared to other materials, but as the charges are based on weight, many believe that it will still be cheaper to use plastic as opposed to heavier, more recyclable products like glass. Jason Galley, director and chief executive at the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association, told the Telegraph : “It was advertised as supposed to reduce waste, increase recycling and reduce packaging – but actually it is driving in 180 degrees in the other direction. “If you charge less for something that recycles less then you have higher fees for disposing of those materials as it will have to go to landfills or to be incinerated. You push costs up, you drive towards something that is feeding inflation, it is just insane. It is lose-lose.” Dave Dalton is the chief executive of British Glass and believes that the policy is “illogical”. He told the Telegraph: “Glass fees will be around 49 times higher than other, less recyclable materials, leaving brands with no choice but to move away from using 100 per cent recyclable glass products. “Unfortunately, we are now in a position where consumers are indirectly being taxed to use less sustainable materials.” Mr Dalton urged ministers to amend the fee calculation from weight to volume and to recognise that the policy could see an exodus of businesses using products such as glass or metal. The policy, known as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) , was originally devised by Michael Gove during his time as environment secretary and earlier this month secondary legislation was passed that will see the levy come into legal force on 1 January 2025. But experts have warned that the policy has been pushed through too quickly and has not been given enough consideration. Dr Nicholas Kirk, director of the British Glass Manufacturers’ Confederation says that plastic packaging can be up to 20 times lighter than glass meaning that businesses will effectively be incentivised to use it instead of materials that are easier to recycle. He said: “My concern is that the policy will incentivise brands and retailers to switch away from a fully recyclable packaging material like glass to a less recyclable one like plastic,” he said. “Should the policy be driving that kind of behaviour?” The government believes that between 85-100% of the increased costs will be passed onto consumers, increasing annual bills per household by around £56 . A Defra spokesman said: “We are committed to cracking down on waste as we move towards a circular economy. “EPR for packaging is a vital first step for our packaging reforms. These reforms will create 21,000 jobs and stimulate more than £10 billion investment in the recycling sector over the next decade. It means packaging producers, rather than the taxpayer, are covering the cost of managing waste. “We continue to work closely with businesses, including in the glass industry, on this programme. We have published further illustrative base fees, based on the latest data for 2024, providing them with more clarity to prepare.”SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Kyle McCord threw for a career-high 470 yards with two touchdowns to lead Syracuse to a 31-24 win over UConn on Saturday. McCord broke Syracuse’s all-time record for single-season passing yards with 4:12 remaining in the first half.
