Georgia Bureau of Investigation charges man in 1985 church killings after original suspect exoneratedClips from fans of Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso stretching the legs of a very special, screaming V10 McLaren have been circulating on socials as of late. The occasion? The two-time world champion and former McLaren driver reunited with his former boss, Zak Brown for a very special track day, with Alonso’s father, Jose Luis Alonso, in tow. The Papaya boss’ extensive car collection is well known for having quite a few notable race cars, and over the years if he’s not racing them himself in vintage events, he’s inviting friends to enjoy them on track with him. This particular friends-only adventure took some of Brown’s prized cars, and the trio to Alcainz, Spain. Making an appearance on track from Brown’s collection was a 1976 Australian Sports Sedan Championship-winning DeKon Monza, along with a five-time IMSA-winning 1989 TWR Jaguar XJR-10, and the 2011 Holden Commodore that won the Bathurst 1000 with Brown’s former team, Walkinshaw Racing. But the crown jewel of this gathering was Ayrton Senna’s double-world championship-winning McLaren-Honda MP4/5. Making the day extra special, Fernando and his father were provided a pair of Ayrton Senna’s overalls to wear before snapping a few photos alongside the car, and eventually taking the legend’s car for a spin. As is the case for the vast majority of F1 fans, Senna served as an inspiration for a young Fernando, as the then-McLaren driver told SennaTV in 2017. “I think he was an inspiration for many of us [in] that generation,” he said. “We switched on the television and we saw that car winning, that yellow helmet winning, [and] we wanted to become Formula 1 drivers one day. Just because of him. So I think he’s one of the greatest for sure.” Fernando later shared a series of photos from the trip and his personal archives to his socials, including an adorable one of him as a youngster in a McLaren-themed red and white kart. Another showed his father making himself comfortable in the 16-time race-winning MP4/5 as Fernando crouched by his side to seemingly share some helpful tips. The Aston Martin driver later shared a touching tribute to his father on Instagram, saying it was “impossible to compensate my parents for everything [they] have given and taught me.” He also added a thank you note to Brown, expressing his gratitude for the American allowing him to “enjoy” Senna’s iconic McLaren “from time to time.” Brown too reflected on an exciting day at the circuit on Instagram, sharing a snap of him and Fernando posing alongside the double world championship-winning McLaren....Warns against denigrating innocent judges A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has accused the acting national chairman of the party, Abdullahi Ganduje, of plotting with some others to delete the names of those on whose blood the party was built in the state years ago. The faction which is loyal to former governor of the state, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, said in a press conference in Port Harcourt Monday, December 23, 2024, that Ganduje and his group in Rivers State were bent on denigrating innocent judges in the state. The press briefing which was addressed by the publicity secretary of the dissolved executive council, Darlington Nwauju, reminded Ganduje how he promised internal democracy for the APC on the 3rd August 2023, after his ratification by national executive council of the party. The faction led by Emeka Beke had obtained a court order sacking the caretaker committee that Ganduje put together, mostly made up of loyalists of Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister that is a kingpin of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The Beke camp also got a court order stopping the congresses of the Ganduje-approved faction and also obtained a court ruling nullifying the inauguration of the result of the congresses, being an executive committee headed by Tony Okocha, Wike’s arrowhead in Rivers State. Now, the Beke-led APC told newsmen: “We are worried that Ganduje is doing everything possible to bully the very principles of progressivism upon which our party was founded and to even imagine the peculiarity of the Rivers State chapter of the party where tons of human beings had their lives cut short for their membership of the APC. “It is sad that there is a conspiracy to delete the memories of all our supporters who unfortunately lost their lives. They now want to rewrite the history of the party here in Rivers and ensure that justice is not served on sponsors and perpetrators of those barbaric crimes that took place in 2015, 2019 and 2023.” The statement said the APC has suffered avoidable media bashing in recent weeks and months due to the dictatorial leadership style of Ganduje who allegedly seems to be in such a hurry to rewrite history of their painful history. The camp said Ganduje managed to get the national working committee (NWC) to wipe away the elected committee and replaced them with a caretaker committee. “Choosing to make undemocratic utterances which give a black eye to internal party democracy and by so doing, arming opposition parties with points to de-market the APC while discouraging investors from investing in Nigeria as the very national chairman of the ruling party has kept telling the international community by his actions, that the party has no regard for orders of court.” Nwauju accused Ganduje of arming the supporters and loyalists of the FCT Minister (immediate past governor in Rivers State) who is in another party. He said those persons were created as caretaker committee to oust the elected people. Nwauju said the actions of Ganduje were reversed by a Port Harcourt High Court but that Ganduje and Okocha have subjected the court’s decision to media trial by those who received the necessary judicial hammer. “It may interest you to note that a similar move to illegally dissolve elected State Executives of the Benue State chapter of APC was equally set aside on November 28 2024 by a Justice, T.A. Kume, of a Makurdi High Court for similar reasons as clearly elucidated in Aprioku’s judgment which favoured elected executives of the party in Rivers State.” Nwauju went on: “Gentlemen, one of the reasons for talking to the media today is to expose the satanic lies peddled by these individuals who are obviously pretending to be democrats but their actions keep exposing their underbelly. Let it be known that a court in Benue State took a similar stand as the Port Harcourt High court by frowning at the fact that the APC willfully and barefacedly chose to throw her own constitution to the dustbin and there is no court anywhere that can encourage despotism. It is, therefore, only a higher court that can set aside the judgment orders issued by Aprioku and importantly, entering an appeal cannot also stop the enforcement of Aprioku’s judgment as beneficiaries of such order are bound by law to reap the fruits of that judgment. “Again, since the High Court judgment is on appeal and Court of Appeal fixed 4th and 12th February 2025 to hear the matter, what was (is) the rush in countering the order of Court?” Read also: Things soon to get better? Rivers APC leader appeals to suffering Nigerians, says Tinubu has them at heart Reacting to the threat by Okocha on his birthday to suspend the faction that went to court, Nwauju said Beke and the rest were the rightful officers of the party in the state. “Accusing us of collaborating with the Governor of Rivers State to embarrass the APC is bizarre. If we may ask, which of the APCs? The one they sabotaged in 2015, 2019 and 2023? Is it the same APC that they abandoned to join the SDP, jumped ship to openly campaign for the PDP and Gov Fubara? Or is it the APC they claim they belong to that is peopled 80% by supporters and loyalists of the FCT Minister? The APC all of whom Wike bought forms for? I think they should be talking about PDAPC not APC. Well, we do not understand how persons who by the clear judgment of court have no business discussing our party affairs nor stretching their luck by impersonating the executives in the state can delve into the realms of expelling the landlords of the party in the State. These individuals still talking to the press (Okocha and his friends) are not officers of our party and have never been. These chaps are supposed to be cooling off behind bars for being contemptuous of court together.” On Okocha’s accusation that the Beke camp of the APC was collaborating with Gov Sim Fubara to trouble the (Wike) APC faction, Nwauju asked to know if it is the Rivers Beke APC camp actions that also led to the November 28th 2024 nullification of the contraption Ganduje attempted to impose on the Benue State chapter of our party? He also asked to know if it is the Rivers Beke APC that is also responsible for the court cases over party executives in Enugu? “Or the deep differences within the Bayelsa, Abia, Kwara and other chapters of the APC? “Is it this alleged collaboration that also forced Ganduje’s NWC to conduct two guber primaries in Edo State and also led to the embarrassment Ganduje brought the party by congratulating the wrong candidate on February 17th 2024? “Is it this collaboration that miraculously provided the private jet that ferried Ganduje and his delegation from Abuja to PH on December 13th 2024? “Is it this collaboration that yielded the thousands of dollars distributed through the delegation to Port Harcourt on December 13th? The Beke camp accused the Wike APC and Ganduje of not knowing anything about the Constitution of the APC. “Finally, we invite Nigerians to take note of two unimpeachable facts: That the judgment delivered by the honourable justice, Sika Aprioku, of the Rivers State High Court on August 12th 2024 in favour of all elected officers of the party in the state from Ward, LGA to State still subsists and has not been vacated; and that another court presided over by Godswill Obomanu has also nullified the so-called congresses”.
Governor vows to help promote educationWine is always a good idea but there are a few not-so-obvious mistakes you might be making when choosing, storing and pouring the stuff. In an ongoing effort to get the most out of every bottle we've prodded experts about how to find the best wine for cheap and learned that wine does indeed stay fresher for longer after opening when stores in the fridge. To brush on common mistakes made related to wine, we asked Jerry Chandler, general manager of The Bohemian Wine Bar in Charlotte. Chandler also serves as a wine consultant for The Exchange at 36th and kindly talked us through five general common mistakes wine drinkers make that could be jeopardizing the bottle's full potential. Read more: 35 Best Wine Gifts for 2024, According to a Sommelier Perhaps most surprising was his suggestion to put red wine in the fridge briefly before pouring since many of us serve it a touch too warm. Here are five wine mistakes to avoid to help you get the most out of your next bottle. 1. Serving white wine too cold and red wine too warm Wine is often served too cold or too warm to express its full slate of aromatic compounds. We tend to drink white wine straight out of the refrigerator and red wine right off the counter, but both could benefit from coming a little more toward the center for an ideal serving temperature. Neither ice cold white wine nor too-warm red wine can express their aromatic compounds effectively. The flavors of white wine are more dynamic in the 40s or 50s (Fahrenheit) and red wines in the 50s or 60s. To achieve this, "it's okay to put red wine in the fridge for 10 or 15 minutes, just to get it a little bit cooler," Chandler says. Similarly, you can remove your white wine from the fridge 15 to 20 minutes before you intend to serve it, or just chill a room temperature bottle of white in a bucket of ice water for that same amount of time. "That's going to give you that temperature that's going to be in the 40s," he says, "but it's not going to be too cold." Note that ice plus water and salt will chill your bottle much faster than just ice alone. You can tuck a bottle into the freezer for a few minutes, "just don't forget about it, because you're going to burn that wine and a lot of the sugars are gonna separate," Chandler says. Sparkling wine can also do with a little temperature increase, but be aware of an increased degree of fizz as well. "It's going to be a bit more lively," he says, and give more of a pop when opened. 2. Popping sparkling wine incorrectly When uncorking Champagne, leave the cage on and use a gentle pull and twist. Speaking of which, while the pop of a bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine can be festive, it's reducing the carbonation in the bottle and also can be dangerous. Most sparkling wines are topped with a mushroom-shaped cork, plus a metal cage, which keeps the cork in place since the bottle's contents are pressurized. But that cage has another purpose. It can also help you open the bottle safely. It should be unscrewed and loosened, but left in place to help you remove the cork. "You use the sides of the cage to gently grip and twist. That's going to allow some of the pressure to slowly alleviate from the bottle," Chandler says, which releases the cork in a slower and more controlled fashion and preserves more of the carbon dioxide responsible for the bubbles. "I watch so many people just unscrew the cage and then take the cage off, and I always feel my heart skip a beat because you are allowing that cork to do anything it wishes, including blasting off in any direction, full speed," Chandler says. "Never remove that cage unless you're removing it with the cork." 3. Storing it improperly Wine should be kept somewhere dry, cool and away from direct sunlight. You don't have to have a wine cellar or wine collection to heed a few common sense practices when it comes to storing wine. Most wine in the U.S. is consumed within a few hours of purchase, in which case not a lot can go wrong, but even if you're keeping a bottle for a couple of days to save for a special occasion, "make sure you're being mindful," Chandler says, to ensure that whatever wine you have doesn't become a waste of money due to improper handling. Light, heat and motion can have an effect even on inexpensive bottles. "You don't ever want to leave wine where the temperatures will constantly fluctuate" Chandler says, which can be anywhere that gets direct sunlight at any part of the day. "You also don't want to leave it somewhere where it is constantly going to be moving," he says, which can disrupt any sediment and affect its flavor. Leaving a bottle of wine in a vehicle, for example, can expose it to extreme temperatures both high and low as well as subject it to excessive movement. The best way to store wine for more than a few hours is on its side in a consistently cool place that doesn't receive direct sunlight. 4. Being a packaging snob If you turn your nose up at wine with a screw top, you're going to miss out on a few excellent budget-friendly bottles. There may have been a time when the heaviness of the bottle or the type of closure used were guarantees of a wine's quality, but that is no longer the case. Along with other types of alcoholic beverages, wine has evolved to meet the moment, and matters of sustainability as well as improvements in technology have created more diverse packaging options. "Science has come a long way in preserving wine, especially over the past 20 years," Chandler says, but some people still hold prejudices about wine that's sealed with a screw top. ("Stelvin closure" to wine pros.) "You're not going to want to lay down a bottle for 20 years that has a screw top," he says, "but for wines that you're going to drink soon, a screw top is perfectly fine." Read more: Ask the Expert: How to Find a Great Wine on a Budget Many wine producers are actually decreasing their bottle weight as they've rolled out sustainability initiatives, and some major wine reviewers are refusing to rate wines whose bottles are above a certain weight. Both canned wine and boxed wine are also increasing in quality as those packages are also becoming championed with sustainability measures. Basically, wine has entered its "don't judge it by its cover" era. 5. Never leaving your comfort zone Adventurous wine drinkers have more fun. There are literally thousands of wine grape varieties, not to mention wine producers, yet most of us tend to drink the same few bottles on repeat. Because of the way wine is distributed in the US, it's difficult to find producers whose wines are consistently available from store to store. Or to find a bottle you loved at a restaurant on your local retail shelves. A lot of us tend to drink the same mass-produced brands and familiar grapes, because we can always find them. This too, is a mistake, in terms of getting the best bang for your buck, knowing what's actually in your bottle and expanding your palate. "With mass-produced wines I always think about what else is in there to keep them at that same consistent flavor profile," Chandler says. (Hint: it's more than just grapes.) Anything that has the kind of marketing budget for major advertising tends to represent wine made in conference rooms rather than in vineyards. It can be understandably hard to branch out, however. "When I first started learning wine, I only wanted to drink certain things because I didn't want to spend the money and risk it," Chandler says. Rather than focus on a few bottles, try to understand the flavor profiles you like and be willing to engage with wine pros in retail or restaurant settings that can use your preferences to introduce you to new things. "Wine is an endless experience," he says, "and we want people to be as excited to try this thing for the first time the way we were."
AMMAN, Jordan — President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced Israel and Lebanon have reached a cease-fire agreement meant to pause fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah. The 14-month conflict has left more than 3,000 people dead. “Effective 4 a.m. tomorrow local time the fighting across the Lebanese-Israeli border will end. Will end,” Biden said from the White House. “This is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities. I applaud the courageous leaders of Lebanon and Israel end the violence.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier Tuesday he had recommended that this government approve the agreement. Though the deal does not involve the separate conflict in Gaza Strip, Biden administration officials said they hoped it would lead to an agreement to end fighting there, too. Even as the deal was finalized, Israeli warplanes launched a series of airstrikes across Lebanon, striking areas in the country’s southern and eastern regions, along with the suburbs of the capital — areas where Hezbollah holds sway. Several airstrikes also hit the heart of Beirut, killing at least 10 people, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. In a televised address on Tuesday evening local time, Netanyahu said he would present the outline of the proposal to the government, pushing his ministers to accept the move despite reservations from far-right leaders who are integral members of his coalition. “The length of the ceasefire will depend on what happens in Lebanon,” Netanyahu said. He added that Israel would maintain freedom to act against violations. “If Hezbollah breaks the agreement and seeks to arm itself, we will attack,” he said. The agreement would not immediately affect the fighting in Gaza Strip with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Netanyahu pushed his ministers to accept the agreement, arguing it would allow Israel to focus its attention on the threat from Iran, give Israeli troops an opportunity to replenish their stocks and isolate Hamas. The agreement will initiate a 60-day truce that would see both sides withdraw: Israeli troops out of south Lebanon to Israeli territory, and Hezbollah to areas north of the Litani River, some 18 miles north of the Lebanese-Israeli border. During the truce, a monitoring mechanism would be established that would ensure Hezbollah is not able to reconstitute itself or wage attacks on Israel from southern Lebanon. A U.S.-led committee would oversee implementation of the withdrawal. Lebanese officials say some 5,000 soldiers from Lebanon’s army — which has remained neutral during the conflict — would then enter south Lebanon, along with U.N. peacekeeping forces. Lebanon’s caretaker government is set to meet Wednesday morning to discuss the proposal; it is widely expected to be approved. Despite the optimism, many elements of the cease-fire proposal — which came about after vigorous negotiations brokered by the U.S. and France — remain unclear. One of the larger sticking points is whether Israel would be able to continue striking Hezbollah throughout Lebanon if the group attempts to reestablish a presence south of the Litani River, or if it continues to wage attacks on Israel or smuggle weapons. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz told the U.N.’s Lebanon envoy Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert on Tuesday that Israel would act “forcefully” against any breach of the ceasefire agreement. “If you do not act, we will do it, forcefully,” Katz said in a statement. “Any house rebuilt in south Lebanon and used as a terrorist base will be destroyed, any rearming or terrorist organization will be attacked, any attempt at transferring arms will be foiled, and any threat against our forces or our citizens will be immediately eliminated.” Lebanese leaders have dismissed such an agreement as an unacceptable breach of Lebanon’s sovereignty. The cease-fire would officially be an agreement between Israel and Lebanon. It includes a Lebanese lawmaker who has been negotiating on Hezbollah’s behalf. But Hezbollah, a paramilitary faction and political party which is backed by Iran, is not officially a party to the agreement. Another question is the fate of Hezbollah’s weapons. Before the war, the group was considered one of the world’s premier paramilitary factions, with an arsenal more powerful than that of the Lebanese army. The cease-fire agreement, which is based on a U.N. resolution that established a cease-fire in the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel, has provisions that would force the group to surrender its arms. A cease-fire would end a 13-month conflict that began a day after Hamas attacked southern Israel, when Hezbollah initiated a rocket campaign in northern Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. In the months of tit-for-tat strikes that followed, some 60,000 people from northern Israel and approximately 100,000 Lebanese from southern Lebanon were displaced. In September, Israel escalated its attacks, conducting thousands of airstrikes on Hezbollah-dominated parts of the country and starting an invasion that saw Israeli troops enter southern Lebanon for the first time since 2006. It also assassinated Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah. Since Oct. 8, 2023, more than 3,823 people have been killed in Lebanon and 15,859 injured, according to Lebanese government data, the majority of them in the last two months. More than 25 percent of those killed were women and children, according to the government data, which do not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Meanwhile, some 1.2 million people — almost a quarter of Lebanon’s population — have been displaced, with wide swaths of the country destroyed. The Israeli government said on Tuesday that 78 Israelis have been killed in attacks by Hezbollah and its allies, including 47 civilians. Even as senior Israeli ministers were meeting at Israeli military headquarters in Tel Aviv, Israeli warplanes launched some 180 airstrikes across the country, according to a statement from Israel’s military. It issued evacuation warnings for some cities. The military said it was targeting Hezbollah’s infrastructure, including the group’s financial arm. Among the targets were four neighborhoods of central Beirut with which had previously been spared from the fighting. One raid hit Hamra, a popular shopping district in the capital which in recent months has become a sanctuary for hundreds of thousands displaced from the Dahieh, the constellation of suburbs south of Beirut where many of Hezbollah’s offices are headquartered. The Dahieh too was pounded by an intense barrage of more than 20 airstrikes, leaving the area obscured by a curtain of smoke and rocking buildings in adjacent neighborhoods. “The hysterical Israeli aggression this evening on Beirut and various Lebanese regions, which specifically targets civilians, confirms once again that the Israeli enemy does not respect any law or consideration,” said Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati in a statement on Tuesday. He called on the international community “to act quickly to stop this aggression and implement an immediate ceasefire.” Meanwhile, Hezbollah continued its barrage against northern Israel, lobbing dozens of projectiles across the border.Last-minute errands often seem to pop up on Christmas and Christmas Eve, whether it's buying a quick present or picking up one last ingredient. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, in his campaign, promised the American voters to withdraw the country from power struggles across the globe, protect the American industries by imposing high tariffs and bring back the manufacturing industries. However, his recent comments can be seen as a shift from the non-aggressive foreign policy that he had preached. Trump set social media on fire with his remarks, such as "joking" about Canada being the latest state to be added to the U.S., his threat to take back the Panama Canal and his renewed interest in acquiring Greenland, which is a Danish territory that has time and again made it clear it wants none of it. Despite such scenarios being highly unlikely, these provocative statements also show a possibility of Trump’s “America First” concept applying to projecting American power across the world to secure the U.S. trade and security agendas. In a post shared on his social media platform on Dec. 22, Donald Trump accused Panama of imposing exorbitant fees for access to the Panama Canal. He warned that unless the fee policy is revised to accommodate the U.S. demands, he would push for the canal’s management to be restored to U.S. control. For various reasons, the canal, a critical trade artery connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, is highly strategic to the U.S. economy. Any disruption to its operations - unprecedented since Panama assumed control in the 1970s – is expected to trigger significant price hikes on goods imported from China and other Asian nations, drastically affecting supply chains across the entire U.S. coastline. “The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous. If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question,” Trump wrote on Truth. In yet another inflammatory move, Donald Trump posted an image on his Truth Social platform depicting a U.S. flag flying over a narrow canal, accompanied by the caption: “Welcome to the U.S. Canal.!” The post further strained relations with Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli Mulino, who responded forcefully through a video message on his X account, affirming, “Every square foot of the Panama Canal and the land surrounding it will forever belong to Panama.” This sharp exchange underscores the growing diplomatic rift sparked by Trump’s rhetoric. His threats to reassert U.S. control over the Panama Canal have sent shockwaves through the global political landscape, intensifying bilateral tensions while signaling deeper geopolitical challenges. The provocative statements – in addition to the Canada and Greenland controversies – have not only negatively affected the U.S.-Panamanian relationship but will also have far-reaching implications for global stability, raising questions about the potential disruptions to the international order and the enduring influence of U.S. foreign policy after Trump’s second entry into the Oval Office. The Panama Canal, a 51-mile engineering marvel connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, has been a symbol of American prowess since its completion in 1914. Initially controlled by the U.S., the canal was later handed over to Panama by the end of 1999 following the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. Trump's recent comments have revisited this history, challenging Panama's sovereignty and echoing sentiments of American imperialism in the region. Trump’s claim of "ridiculous" fees and the possibility of Chinese interference in the canal are indicative of high-voltage foreign policy under the Trump 2.0. Trump’s threat to take back the Panama Canal has the potential of having consequences that will affect not only the Americas but also other parts of the world in terms of trade and politics. If Trump attempts to realize his plan, then it will create a strong precedent for how other important waterways should be handled. Trump’s rhetoric is an indication of the possible shift in the U.S. foreign policy to a more assertive and unilateral one. By threatening Panama’s sovereignty and stoking concerns over Chinese expansion in the area, he demonstrates a willingness to go to force to advance the U.S. strategic position. However, such a strategy may have the potential of isolating allies and straining relations with other countries, as well as challenging the norms of sovereignty and territorial integrity that are the cornerstone of the existing world order. This episode also shows the increasing rivalry between the U.S. and China for influence networks. Interestingly, China does not have direct ownership of the Panama Canal; a company from Hong Kong manages two of the canal’s ports. However, this is not the first time that Trump has expressed concerns over Beijing’s increasing power in its vicinity. Trump’s statements are in line with the overall discourse on China’s Belt and Road Initiative and its attempts to ensure dominance in the sea lanes. There are high chances of increased U.S.-China tension over the Panama Canal in the coming days – with a potential impact on the global economy. Countries that currently depend on the canal for their trade relations with other parts of the world, especially those in Europe and Asia, may become mere victims of this geopolitical war. The EU, for instance, has a lot to lose in terms of trade relations, and any disturbance that may occur at the Panama Canal may significantly affect European economies. A more plausible theory, however, is that Trump is just playing the role of a firebrand populist – similar to how he rages and brags against Mexico, China or Canada, for instance – is another way of playing to the domestic audience. Populist demagogues, by the nature of their office and by choice, create the conditions of external threat, whether real or perceived and wrap themselves in the flag as saviors of the nation. From this point of view, Trump’s latest outburst is consistent with his past demeanor. Trump's statement on the Panama Canal has brought back memories of the controversy surrounding the canal and the questions that it raises regarding the ownership of such a critical asset for world trade. Instead of fabricating conflicts with other nations or targeting immigrants – such as his baseless claim that Haitians are eating cats and dogs in Ohio – Donald Trump should turn his attention to the pressing crises facing the U.S. The nation is grappling with a broken healthcare system, an epidemic of mass shootings, escalating climate disasters decimating entire regions and record levels of income inequality. These issues are far more consequential to Americans than canal fees or outlandish remarks about foreign adversaries. So why isn’t Trump addressing them? Perhaps he’s trying to divert attention from these urgent challenges, or maybe he’s playing to the xenophobic tendencies of his base to maintain political momentum. Either way, this approach does nothing to solve America's real problems and only deepens divisions. It’s a disappointing – and dangerous – display of misplaced priorities.
