ISLAMABAD: Pakistan was haunted by political uncertainty, economic instability, a deteriorating security situation and troubled relations with neighbours in 2024. But what defined the year were not just these perennial ills but the country's inability to tackle incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan. Amid political turbulence, Pakistan hosted a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conclave, which was also attended by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar -- the first high-ranking Indian minister in nearly a decade to visit Islamabad amid frosty ties between the two neighbours. The last Indian foreign minister to visit Pakistan was Sushma Swaraj. She had travelled to Islamabad to attend the 'Heart of Asia' conference on Afghanistan in December 2015. In his address at the SCO event, Jaishankar said, "If friendship has fallen short and good neighbourliness is missing somewhere, there are surely reasons to introspect and causes to address." He also said if activities across borders are "characterised" by terrorism, extremism and separatism, they are hardly likely to encourage trade, energy flows and connectivity in parallel. His remarks were seen as directed towards Pakistan, which has troubled relations with all its neighbours. If the year began with Iran conducting missile strikes within Pakistan in January, targeting Baloch militants, it ended with Pakistan carrying out airstrikes in Afghanistan, killing at least 46 people, including women and children, according to Afghanistan's Taliban government. Pakistan says the target was militants. Pakistan witnessed a series of terror attacks, particularly in troubled Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces in 2024, among the toughest years for its security forces. According to the details shared with Parliament by the interior ministry, 924 people were killed and 2,121 injured in 1,566 terrorism incidents in the first 10 months of the year. At least 573 dead and 1,353 injured belonged to law enforcement agencies, including the army. On the economic front, Pakistan was on the verge of default in 2022 and only averted it due to the timely intervention by the International Monetary Fund. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif takes credit for pulling the country back from the brink of bankruptcy and turning around the economy. In 2024 inflation came down to single digits, policy rates reduced from 22.5 to 15 percent, foreign exchange reserves improved, and the stock market made record gains. But it was jailed former prime minister Imran Khan who often hogged the headlines. In the elections in February, independent candidates backed by Khan's party surprised everyone by winning more than 100 out of the 226 seats in a hung parliament. And then the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz threw in a surprise, nominating Shehbaz Sharif as the prime ministerial candidate instead of the party supremo and three-time former premier Nawaz Sharif. As the PML-N and the Pakistan Peoples Party struck a power-sharing deal to form a coalition government led by Shehbaz, Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) decided to sit in the Opposition. Khan was arrested in August 2023 after his conviction in a case of corruption and has remained behind bars since then. Contrary to expectations, the former cricketer's popularity swelled in 2024, proving right his words—uttered before he was ousted as PM in 2022 after losing a trust vote in Parliament—that he would be "more dangerous when out of power." Recently, after his party workers staged a march to Islamabad, triggering a crackdown on them by the authorities, Khan threatened "mass civil disobedience" by his supporters if his major demands were not met. These include the "restoration" of the mandate he believes he got in the February parliamentary elections to run the country. His supporters see 2024 as a disaster for electoral politics and democracy, pointing at the "blatant disregard" of popular opinion reflected on the ballots. Some in power also concede this. In a recent interview with Dunya News, senior PML-N leader Mian Javed Latif accepted that "we had lost the elections." Talks began recently between PTI and the government, but few believe that Khan's demand to restore his "stolen mandate" will be met. Consequently, the country could continue to face strong political headwinds in 2025. With the traditional challenges still intact, the government now faces another: how to tame a 'cornered tiger'.CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Reniya Kelly had 18 points and six assists, Maria Gakdeng added 16 points and nine rebounds, and No. 16 North Carolina beat 14th-ranked Kentucky 72-53 on Thursday night in the SEC/ACC Challenge. North Carolina opened the game on a 14-4 run, capped by Alyssa Ustby’s fifth 3-pointer of the season. The Tar Heels led 36-25 at halftime after holding the Wildcats to 36% shooting. North Carolina only made one field goal in the opening five minutes of the third quarter as Kentucky got as close as seven points. But The Tar Heels made five field goals in the final five minutes to take a 50-39 lead into the fourth. Kentucky’s opening four baskets of the fourth were from 3-point range to get within 60-51 with 5:52 left on Dazia Lawrence’s basket off a nice assist from Georgia Amoore on an inbounds play. North Carlina sealed it by scoring the next six points — all from the free-throw line. Ustby scored 13 points with eight rebounds for North Carolina (8-1). The Tar Heels outscored Kentucky 42-10 in the paint. Lawrence scored 17 points and Amelia Hassett had 13 points and 13 rebounds for Kentucky (7-1). Amoore added 10 points and eight assists and Clara Strack, averaging a team-high 18.3 points per game, was held to four points on 2-of-10 shooting. North Carolina stays at home to play Coppin State on Sunday. Kentucky returns home to face Queens University on Monday. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. So it’s kind of weird that when the previously delayed tool went live, it only did so for x64-based machines and not Arm-based Snapdragon laptops that made such a splash earlier this year. Well, if you have one of those, you can now try Recall via the Windows Insider program. Microsoft that Recall, which records pretty much everything you do on Windows, is now available to Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. You’ll need to get on the Insider Program (a fancy title for a beta) and join the Dev Channel if you want to see what all the hubbub is about. Fortunately, it’s easy enough to get back off when the updates reach stable (or you just don’t want to be on that channel anymore). Recall has had a rocky road since its announcement as one of Microsoft’s most dramatic new AI-powered tools. After being the focus of for its privacy and security implications, Microsoft and assured regular users that they could turn off its access to certain programs. Microsoft also made the decision to — if you want it on a compatible work PC, you’ll need to clear it with your IT manager before manually opting in and turning it on. At this point, it seems exceedingly unlikely that Recall will make it into the general release channel for Windows 11 before 2025. And even then, only a fraction of the market will have the ability to try it out since it’s only available on Copilot+ PCs from this year or newer. Which, by the way, Microsoft wants you to buy into — so much so that it’s pushing . Michael is a 10-year veteran of technology journalism, covering everything from Apple to ZTE. Tony Okocha Emerges APC Chairman In RiversAnge Postecoglou has vowed to keep fighting to revive Tottenham's fortunes after receiving "some direct feedback" from disgruntled fans following a limp 1-0 Premier League loss to Bournemouth. Spurs boss Postecoglou was booed and heckled by a frustrated away end at the Vitality Stadium on Thursday, having seen his toothless side condemned to defeat by Dean Huijsen's 17th-minute header. The Australian refused to go into detail about the heated exchange but said he understood the supporters' emotional reaction. "I didn't like what was being said because I'm a human being but you've got to cop it," said Postecoglou, whose team has won only one of their last six games in all competitions. "I've been around long enough to know that when things don't go well you've got to understand the frustration and the disappointment. "They're rightly disappointed tonight because we've let a game of football get away from us. I'm OK with all that. "They're disappointed and rightly so. They gave me some direct feedback, which I guess is taken onboard. "All I can say is, I'm really disappointed with tonight and I'm determined to get it right and I will keep fighting until we do." Asked what was said by the travelling support, Postecoglou replied: "Probably not for here, mate." Tottenham began brightly in Dorset but created little during the 90 minutes and were fortunate not to lose by a bigger margin. Bournemouth midfielder Ryan Christie struck a post and the impressive hosts failed to capitalise on a host of other chances to put the result beyond doubt. Spurs dropped below the Cherries, into 10th position, ahead of Sunday's London derby at home to high-flying Chelsea following the latest setback in a patchy season so far. To compound a miserable evening for the injury-hit north London club, defender Ben Davies limped out of his 300th Premier League appearance and faces a spell on the sidelines. "It looks like he's done his hamstring," said Postecoglou. "Him and Radu (Dragusin) have played every game, it's the one sort of position we can't rotate. "He'll obviously be out for a period of time now, we'll just have to wait and see how long it is. "It's kind of the consequence of us having the squad we have at the moment."
