Daily Post Nigeria Three arrested for murder, conspiracy in Niger State Home News Politics Metro Entertainment Sport Metro Three arrested for murder, conspiracy in Niger State Published on December 13, 2024 By Priscilla Dennis A gruesome discovery has shaken the Maitunbi community in Minna, the Niger State capital, following the arrest of three suspects in connection with the murder of a young woman, Hadiza Umaru. The victim, a resident of Garatu, Bosso, was reported missing on December 1, 2024, prompting a thorough investigation by the Crack Squad Unit. The investigation led to the arrest of Habibu Umaru, the victim’s biological brother, who confessed to deceiving Hadiza and taking her to a herbalist, Aliyu Mallam Taiwe, in Taiwe village near Maitunbi. Taiwe and another suspect, Rabiu Aliyu, were subsequently arrested and confessed to administering a poisonous substance to the victim, purportedly to treat an “evil spirit.” The substance proved fatal, and the victim’s body was buried in a shallow grave. A disturbing twist in the investigation revealed three additional shallow graves in the area, with evidence suggesting the same method of killing was used in those cases. In an interview, Habibu Umaru claimed that his attempt to free his sister from a perceived spiritual problem led him to the herbalist, which ultimately resulted in her death after consuming the poisonous substance. “I took my elder sister to the herbalist to help me check on her, and he told me my sister was not human but an evil spirit. During the treatment, she died,” he revealed. Umaru also admitted that he brought his sister to the herbalist without their parents’ knowledge. They only learnt the shocking truth after the police investigation revealed his involvement in her disappearance and death. Rabiu Aliyu, another suspect, alleged that the victim, believed to be a witch, was brought to be cured of an evil spirit. He confessed to administering the substance that led to her death. “After administering the substance, she lay down on a mat. We noticed she was uncomfortable, with blood coming out of her mouth, urinating, and passing excrement. She later died. We removed her clothes and dug a grave to bury her naked along with her mat, plates, pots, and wrappers,” Aliyu stated. When asked how much they were paid for the act, he disclosed: “We were given the sum of N100,000 by her brother. I got N30,000, while the remaining N70,000 was given to the herbalist.” The herbalist, Taiwe, claimed that the other two shallow graves discovered contained the bodies of a man and a child brought by a student from outside Niger State for treatment. The suspects will face charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide once the investigation is complete. Fundraising is also underway by the two nonprofit organizations involved in the project, The Uncommon Ground Sculpture Park Inc. and Edmond Fine Arts Institute. Their goal is $92 million. “It takes a long time to build out a park and it takes a long time to fundraise,” Melissa Pepper said during a recent tour of the site. “We are full steam ahead.” The fall 2026 opening aligns perfectly with the centennial celebration of Route 66, said Pepper, who was hired as executive director of the park nonprofit five months ago. She previously worked for the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, Girl Scouts Western Oklahoma, OETA and Myriad Botanical Gardens. The park initially will feature 43 art pieces – from 27 donors and matching funds from the Edmond Visual Arts Commission – with additional sculptures installed over time, Pepper said. “We want there to be an art surprise around every bend,” she said. “This is Oklahoma’s only true dedicated sculpture park,” she said. “I like to say that art is the star of the show and then the supporting characters are nature and play.” With its location along Route 66, Pepper said this will be a regional park that is expected to attract visitors from near and as far away as 200 miles. It will be slightly smaller than Scissortail Park in Oklahoma City (70 acres) and Gathering Place in Tulsa (66 acres). Features will include event venues, playgrounds, three stocked ponds with fishing docks, a dog park, and trails for walking, hiking and biking. Natural elements include Spring Creek, which runs through the property, heavily wooded acres and a stately 140-year-old pecan tree. Plans call for preserving as many trees as possible and planting additional native trees. Restaurant pads along 2nd Street will provide future establishments with a backyard view over the ponds and into the park. The property was purchased four years ago by the French Family Charitable Foundation from a family who had lived there since the mid-60s and raised Arabian horses. Part of the original horse barn will be retrofitted into a pavilion for activities like corporate picnics. Another area will feature an outdoor stage for everything from big concerts to local theater productions, Pepper said. Anchoring the park will be the new two-story 38,000-square-foot Edmond Fine Arts Institute building. FAI offers educational enrichment in visual and performing arts for adults and children. “This opportunity came up and it was just a perfect fit for us,” Executive Director Shannon Price said. “Quite frankly, we’re at capacity. We have maxed out our building (downtown) and the number of students that we can serve. Annually we have about 4,000 students that are on a waiting list.” Melissa Pepper, executive director of The Uncommon Ground Sculpture Park, talks about some of the pieces that will be displayed in the park during a recent tour of the property. (Staff Photo by Kathryn McNutt) The new facility will include a theater space, three galleries, and sculpture and technology spaces on the first floor. Upstairs will be an event center that can seat about 300 people or host indoor art festivals, Price said. “The goal is to elevate the level of artists coming to Oklahoma,” she said. The two nonprofits have combined their fundraising efforts “so we can cross the finish line at the same time,” Pepper said. Of the $92 million goal, $72 is for the park and its structures and $20 million is for the FAI art and event center. To date, $30 million has been raised, Pepper said. They are seeking federal and state grants and donations from corporations and individuals. The park also will be selling individual and family memberships with VIP perks for parkgoers. Admission to the park will be free. The project was stalled for a year before the property owner and the city reached an agreement. The French Family Charitable Foundation agreed to develop the public art park and donate it to the Park Conservancy Trust upon completion. The Edmond City Council agreed to provide $10 million – drawn from five reserve funds – to pay for public infrastructure at the site and to pay for 70% of the ongoing operations, maintenance and programming of the park up to $899,000 annually. The city also agreed to make improvements to Coltrane Road, subject to the availability of funds. Rand Elliott Architects is designing the park structures and MA+ Architecture is designing the art and event center. Lingo Construction is the general contractor for all construction.

NoneBOSTON (AP) — A Massachusetts judge dismissed criminal charges Monday against a backer of Karen Read who admitted placing dozens of yellow rubber ducks and fake $100 bills around town in support of Read. Richard Schiffer Jr. had argued in Stoughton District Court that he had a First Amendment right to support the defense theory that Read — accused of ramming into her boyfriend John O’Keefe with her SUV and leaving the Boston police officer to die in a snowstorm — has been framed in the polarizing murder case. Schiffer’s attorney Timothy Bradl said Monday that the judge made the right call by quickly tossing the felony witness intimidation and criminal harassment charges against Schiffer. The ruling comes as another judge decided Monday to push back Read’s retrial to April after a mistrial was declared in July when jurors couldn’t reach an agreement. Read was facing second-degree murder charges and two other charges. Her attorneys have argued that other law enforcement officers were responsible for O’Keefe’s death. Regarding Schiffer’s charges, Bradl said, “There wasn’t a leg to stand on.” RELATED COVERAGE Highest court in Massachusetts hears arguments in Karen Read’s bid to dismiss murder charge A judge delays the wrongful death lawsuit against Karen Read until after her criminal trial Karen Read’s defense pushes to get charges dropped in her murder case “Hats off to the judge. He didn’t make everyone wait and ruled from the bench. Everything was completely protected by the First Amendment. This was political speech,” Bradl said. The Norfolk District Attorney’s office declined to comment. Schiffer has said he got the ducks idea after thinking about a defense lawyer’s closing argument that Read was framed . Alan Jackson told jurors that “if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it’s a duck.” Schiffer’s actions did not rise to the level of witness intimidation and criminal harassment “nor does his speech, or in this case his written word on fake currency and use of rubber toys, which are afforded the protections of the First Amendment,” Judge Brian Walsh wrote. “It is the view of this Court that the defendant’s conduct and speech, though a rather sophomoric expression of his opinion, is nonetheless protected speech,” he wrote. Walsh concluded the two-page ruling with quotes from Indiana poet James Whitcomb Riley, believed to have coined the “walks like a duck” phrase, and Robert McCloskey, author of the children’s book “Make Way For Ducklings.” The defense alleged that O’Keefe was actually killed inside the home of his fellow Boston officer Brian Albert and then dragged outside. They argued that investigators focused on Read because she was a “convenient outsider” who saved them from having to consider law enforcement officers as suspects. Schiffer has been among the dozens of Read supporters who accuse state and local law enforcement of a widespread cover-up. Their demonstrations have led to confrontations, especially in the town of Canton where the murder happened, between those who support Read and others who believe she is guilty. Schiffer, who owns Canton Fence and has said that he knows practically everyone in town through his contracting work, was accused of placing some of the ducks outside a pizza shop run by Brian Albert’s brother, Canton Selectman Chris Albert. Other ducks appeared in O’Keefe’s neighborhood.
Jay-Z Lawyer Says Jane Doe Accusing Rapper of Rape Must Reveal Her Identity or Drop LawsuitThe year in money: inflation eased, optimism ticked upwardNEW YORK — After missing last weekend’s loss to the Dolphins, Jets running back Breece Hall could return in Week 15. Hall (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars. “He looks good right now,” Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said on Friday afternoon. “So, it looks promising.” Hall injured his knee during the Jets’ Week 11 loss to the Colts. However, Hall played in the team’s next game against the Seahawks following the Jets’ bye week. While Hall could play on Sunday, the Jets will be without returner and running back Kene Nwangwu. After breaking his hand, Nwangwu will be placed on injured reserve and miss the rest of the season. Nwangwu was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after the Jets’ Week 13 loss to the Seahawks. In that game, after being elevated from the practice squad, Nwangwu registered a 99-yard kick-return touchdown and forced a fumble on a separate kickoff return. “He brought such value as a returner,” Ulbrich said about Nwangwu. “To put him out there with a broken hand, that would be counterproductive for him and us as a team. “Unfortunately, it cuts the season short and what a bright light he was and what an amazing future I think he has in this league.” The Jets’ secondary could be limited against the Jaguars. Brandin Echols (shoulder) is doubtful, and D.J. Reed (groin) is questionable. Ulbrich is “hopeful” Reed can play against Jacksonville. “It’s something that’s lingered here and there,” Ulbrich said about Reed’s groin injury. “It got aggravated and it went away and it got aggravated again. “We are hopeful, but we will see how it goes. He has been a guy that, it has been sore on a Friday and been able to play on a Sunday multiple times this year. We will see how that goes.” Sauce Gardner, who missed last week’s game due to a hamstring injury, will play against the Jaguars. If Echols and Reed do not play, rookie Qwan’tez Stiggers will likely receive more playing time opposite Gardner. “I’m excited for him,” Ulbrich said about Stiggers. “If he gets an opportunity to play, I’m excited about what he can do. He has demonstrated great growth this season and he has elite ball skills. “If we gotta roll with Qwan’tez Stiggers, we are excited about that opportunity for him and for us.” ©2024 New York Daily News.
