Editors have highlightedthe following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: fact-checked peer-reviewed publication trusted source proofread by Marcie Grabowski, University of Hawaii at Manoa Researchers from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Department of Earth Sciences assessed an unprecedented 120 years of data from Kīlauea Volcano on Hawai'i Island, uncovering, for the first time, century-spanning patterns of deformation and stress changes. They had a particular focus on the transformative 1975 magnitude 7.7 Kalapana earthquake, which also resulted in a 20-foot high tsunami. Their study was published recently in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth . "Deciphering Kīlauea's history deepens our understanding of volcanic and seismic hazards," said lead author Lauren Ward Yong, who conducted this study as part of her doctoral dissertation in the UH Mānoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST). "It offers critical insights into how stress evolves in volcanic systems , guiding our ability to anticipate and interpret future earthquakes and magmatic events." The study highlights the hazard potential of the décollement, the major fault zone beneath Kīlauea volcano where two rock masses are moving past each other, which continuously drives the volcano southward and poses risks of large earthquakes coupled with complex volcanic activity within the region. Yong and co-authors explored both the deformation and stress changes of the volcano from 1898–2018 by analyzing six different geodetic datasets. Their analysis encompassed 338,396 earthquake observations and more than 15,000 measurements of surface motion, or displacements, to construct a computational model replicating the observed displacements and stress before, during, and after the large 1975 Kalapana earthquake. This model pinpointed key structural features—fault planes, rift zones, and magma chambers—that drove these changes. Altering stress and motion They discovered that the 1975 Kalapana earthquake significantly altered the region's state of stress and deformation. Prior to 1975, in the location where the large earthquake originated, there was no evidence of slip, a movement where two rock masses move past each other. "This finding suggests that the region was likely frictionally locked and slowly accumulating stress over time leading up to the rupture," said Yong. "Furthermore, we observed that Kīlauea's south flank, a geologically active region stretching from the volcano's summit toward the coastline, experienced greater and more complex displacement prior to the Kalapana earthquake than after." Yong and co-authors' analysis of Kīlauea's décollement, found the average slip was reduced from 10 centimeters per year before the 1975 earthquake, to just four centimeters per year afterward. These variations in slip and stress distributions along the décollement point to changes in mechanical properties , such as friction, that influence the region's seismic and magmatic activity over time. Enhancing hazard preparedness "Hawai'i's communities live alongside active volcanoes and face significant seismic risks," said Yong. "This research enhances hazard preparedness and reinforces UH's commitment to advancing science for the safety and well-being of Hawai'i's residents and ecosystems by shedding light on past significant events." Kīlauea's history offers invaluable insights into the complex relationships between magmatic processes and earthquake cycles. Building on this foundation, Yong and her team plan to refine their models by delving deeper into key properties of Kīlauea's structural features, such as friction along fault planes, to improve understanding of how stress changes trigger seismic and magmatic activity. CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals have found all manner of ways to lose close games this season. Sunday's can be blamed on a defense that missed tackles and allowed 520 yards of offense, and three turnovers by Joe Burrow. It's become a familiar story in this disappointing season. Cincinnati (4-8) keeps scoring lots of points but can't close out games. Seven of the Bengals’ eight losses this year have been by one score. Burrow has stopped talking about the possibility of going on a run and making the playoffs. He'd just like to win another game or two. “Playoffs are the furthest thing from my mind,” the fifth-year quarterback said. “You never know what can happen, so I’ll keep putting one foot in front of the other and try to be the best player I can be for the rest of the season, week in and week out.” The Bengals allowed Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson to throw for a season-high 414 yards and three touchdowns. After Wilson threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown, the Steelers (9-3) scored on seven of their last nine possessions. They didn't punt until early in the fourth quarter. Burrow lost two fumbles and threw an interception. “We haven’t done enough to earn the win,” coach Zac Taylor said. “It’s a simple as that. It’s nobody else’s fault but our own. We haven’t earned it.” What’s working Turnovers aside, Burrow had another strong game, finishing with 28 for 38 for 309 yards with three touchdowns. Burrow is having a great season statistically, and he hasn't hidden his disappointment and frustration about Cincinnati's narrow losses. ... WR Ja'Marr Chase had a touchdown catch to bring his league-leading total to 13. What needs help The defense missed tackles and couldn't hold off the Steelers, even with Burrow keeping the game close. It didn’t help that LB Logan Wilson (knee) and DT Sheldon Rankins (illness) had to sit out. The Bengals have allowed 34 or more points six times, including in four of the past five games. Cincinnati became the first NFL team to lose four games in a season in which it scored 33 points or more. Stock up RB Chase Brown has been dependable as the featured back since Zack Moss went down with a neck injury. He rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers. He also had three catches for 30 yards. The second-year back has 677 yards rushing and six TDs. “He’s really coming along, improving his game every single week,” Burrow said. “Pass game, run game, running hard, understanding his protection responsibilities. He’s a guy that practices hard, plays hard, and a guy you can count on.” Stock down The Bengals' coaching staff. Something has got to give. There was no excuse for the defense to play this badly after a bye week. The unit gave up 500-plus yards for the second time this season. Injuries None were reported in the game. Key number 30.3 — The average points per game by the Bengals against teams with a .500 or better record this season. They are 0-7 in those games. Next steps The Bengals will try to regroup before facing the Dallas Cowboys (5-7) next Monday night. ___ AP NFL: Mitch Stacy, The Associated PressIn conclusion, the end of the "lying flat era" for savings marks a new chapter in the way individuals perceive and manage their finances. President-elect Donald Trump's pro-crypto stance has already led to Bitcoin BTC/USD hitting several new all-time highs since the 2024 election. What Happened: Fresh off of reports that Trump Media & Technology Group was looking to acquire cryptocurrency company Bakkt Holdings BKKT , a new trademark filing could further signal the media company's growing crypto aspirations. Trademark attorney Josh Gerben shared a post about Trump Media Thursday, shown as T Media Tech LLC on the patent filing, which trademarks "TruthFi." The filing was made with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on Nov. 18, according to Gerben. Gerben lists the following elements of the trademark filing for TruthFi: Digital wallets Analysis and compilation of data and statistics for financial research purposes Payment processing of cryptocurrency and credit cards Management of financial assets Digital asset trading Benzinga has contacted Trump Media for comment on the trademark filing. Did You Know? Congress Is Making Huge Investments. Get Tips On What They Bought And Sold Ahead Of The 2024 Election With Our Easy-to-Use Tool Why It's Important: Gerben told the New York Times the trademark filing could be a way for Trump Media to reserve the desired name if it goes forward with plans for a crypto business. While the trademark filing doesn't guarantee that Trump Media will enter the cryptocurrency sector, Gerben said there is a high chance of this. "In my experience, most of the time if a client is going to file an application, there is something going on," Gerben told the Times. The New York Times said Trump Media launching a cryptocurrency business could involve acquiring a company given its small employee count. The Financial Times previously reported that Trump Media was in advanced talks to acquire Bakkt, a cryptocurrency company backed by Intercontinental Exchange ICE . Bakkt said in June it was exploring strategic alternatives that could include a sale or breakup of the company. Trump does not have a role at Trump Media, but is the largest shareholder of the company he co-founded, with around 53% of shares. Donald Trump Jr. , his eldest son, is on the company’s board. The president-elect previously spoke ill of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency before reversing course before the 2024 election, a move that won him potential votes from single-issue cryptocurrency voters. An acquisition of Bakkt would push Trump’s media company and the president-elect deeper into the cryptocurrency sector, which comes after he promoted a crypto venture called World Liberty Financial with business partners. A push into the cryptocurrency sector by Trump's media company and the appointment of new pro-crypto executives in his White House administration could prove to be a win-win for the president-elect. DJT, BKKT Price Action: Trump Media shares gained 1.3% Thursday, closing at $30.49 versus a 52-week trading range of $22.55 to $79.38. Bakkt shares were down 1.6% to $31.10 versus a 52-week trading range of $5.57 to $68.75. Bakkt stock is down 41% year-to-date, but higher in the last five days by more than 140%. That growth focus has enabled the index to deliver superior investment returns: It has more than doubled the return of the S&P 500 over the last 15 years. If there's one drawback to the Nasdaq-100 , it's that it doesn't produce much income (the index's dividend yield is currently 0.8%). However, there is a way to have your proverbial cake and eat it too. Are You Missing The Morning Scoop? Breakfast News delivers it all in a quick, Foolish, and free daily newsletter. Sign Up For Free » The JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF (NASDAQ: JEPQ) offers lower-volatility exposure to the Nasdaq-100, and monthly income. Here's a look at how this unique exchange-traded fund (ETF) can turn a $10,000 investment into roughly $1,000 of income each year. A premium income stream The JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF has a twofold investment approach: Underlying equity portfolio: The fund's managers use data science and fundamental research to construct an equity portfolio. Disciplined options overlay strategy: The ETF writes out-of-the-money call options on the Nasdaq-100 Index to generate distributable income each month. (Out-of-the-money call options are above the current market price.) The fund's strategy of writing options generates a lot of income. It writes (sells) call options on the Nasdaq-100 Index, enabling it to collect income from options premiums. An option premium is the price paid by the option buyer to the seller. As an options seller, the ETF gets to keep 100% of this income if the option expires worthless. That income fluctuates because options premiums are higher during more volatile periods. The fund's strategy of writing calls on the Nasdaq-100 index is very lucrative: Its last monthly distribution had an annualized yield of 12.4%. Over the last 12 months, the yield is 9.9%. That's much higher than other high-yielding asset classes. For example, high-yield U.S. bonds have a yield of around 7% right now, while real estate investment trusts (REITs) and 10-year Treasury bonds are below 4%. To put this ETF's yield into perspective, a $10,000 investment would produce about $990 of annual income at the trailing-12-month rate. That compares to only $80 of dividend income on a similar investment in a Nasdaq-100 ETF like Invesco QQQ Trust . Equity market upside exposure Income is only part of the return generated by this ETF. It also offers equity market exposure by holding a portfolio of high-quality stocks. Its top holdings include notable Nasdaq-100 names Nvidia (7.7% allocation), Apple (7.2%), Amazon (4.6%), and other well-known technology and consumer companies. The fund doesn't have a matching allocation to the Nasdaq-100. The ETF's managers actively allocate the portfolio for optimal risk-adjusted returns. For example, it didn't hold shares of vaccine giant Moderna in the third quarter; that added to its results because the stock underperformed during the period due to concerns about some of Moderna's products and pipeline. The fund had a higher weighting on Oracle , which boosted its results in the third quarter after the cloud giant provided long-term targets well ahead of expectations. The ETF's dual strategy enables investors to both generate income and capture some value appreciation as the underlying portfolio's value increases. Here's a look at what would have happened to a $10,000 investment made at the fund's inception in May 2022: As that chart shows, our hypothetical investor has collected about $3,500 in income. Meanwhile, their initial investment has grown by about 10% to $11,000. Add it up, and the total return is 43% (15.3% annualized). That's a strong total return from a fund offering meaningful income and lower volatility. Income and more JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF can provide you with a very lucrative monthly income stream from options premiums. For additional return potential, the fund offers less volatile equity-market exposure to the top stocks in the Nasdaq-100. These features can make it a great ETF to generate passive income while continuing to grow your wealth. Should you invest $1,000 in JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF right now? TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Tulsa fired football coach Kevin Wilson on Sunday and will elevate wide receivers coach Ryan Switzer on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. The Golden Hurricane lost to South Florida 63-30 on Saturday, dropping their record to 3-8. The school's decision concludes Wilson's two-year tenure with a 7-16 record, including 3-12 in American Athletic Conference play. “With the rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics, we know the importance of positioning our football program and athletic department to thrive and excel in the upcoming years,” athletic director Justin Moore said in a statement. “Our standard will be to play in bowl games every season, compete for conference titles, and build a program that everyone connected to the Golden Hurricane will be proud of." Wilson spent six years as Indiana’s head coach, going 26-47 from 2011 to 2016. He then joined Urban Meyer’s staff at Ohio State and stayed on under Meyer’s successor, Ryan Day, before taking over at Tulsa. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season.
