1 2 Hyderabad: A Mercedes crashed into a divider, damaging an electric pole near City Centre Mall in Banjara Hills early Monday morning. Police said the driver, identified as Nazeer, was speeding, which caused him to lose control. Although speculations were rife on social media that a woman was involved in the accident and that she was intoxicated, police said the case is under investigation. IPL 2025 mega auction IPL Auction 2025: Who went where and for how much IPL 2025: Complete list of players of each franchise The vehicle is owned by a jeweller residing on Road No. 10 in Banjara Hills, the cops said. Police said the incident occurred around 2am and that they were alerted by passersby. A night patrol team from Banjara Hills police station arrived at the scene and found Nazeer near the vehicle. While the front of the car was damaged in the crash, Nazeer was unhurt. He was immediately taken to the police station, where a breathalyser test confirmed he was not driving under the influence. Investigation revealed the jeweller and his wife, who owns the car, were returning home after attending a party at a star hotel on Road No. 1, Banjara Hills. Nazeer was behind the wheel when the accident occurred. Police said that as they approached the junction, Nazeer began speeding on the empty road. When attempting to take a left turn, he lost control and crashed into the median.Authorities are investigating whether there was any foul play or if the driver may have been swapped. "We are reviewing CCTV footage from the hotel and other locations along the route to determine the facts," said KM Raghavendra, SHO of Banjara Hills police station. If you’re sitting on a pile of travel or credit card rewards with no immediate travel plans, donating them to a charity is an easy way to have a positive impact. And it's a popular way to give: In 2021, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members donated around 94 million miles to charities at an approximate cash value of $2.6 million, according to the airline. Beyond the social benefits, miles donations also qualify as activity on your loyalty account and can prevent the rest of your rewards from expiring . But if you’re in the habit of maximizing points and miles, you might also want to stretch the value of your charitable donations as far as possible. And by that measure, some methods of donating points and miles fall short. Here’s what to consider before donating your miles and points . Charity might receive less value for your rewards Many loyalty programs make it easy to redeem your points and miles for a donation directly through their rewards portals. But some portals — especially those from airline and hotel programs — don’t publish the cash value a charity will receive for your miles or points. That means the charity may receive less value for your donation than you’d think, while also making it hard to compare the value of a donation with the value of other options for redeeming your points. Best Western Rewards is one of the few loyalty programs that publishes a cash value for charitable points donations. The charity will receive $2 for every 500 points you donate, for a point a value of 0.4 cent each. NerdWallet values Best Western points at 0.6 cent apiece, so you would receive 33% less value for your donation relative to using them for a hotel stay. You won’t get a tax deduction Generally, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) doesn’t count points and miles as a source of income, so if you donate them, you can't deduct the cash value of your gift. This lack of favorable tax treatment for the consumer combined with the uncertain value you’ll often receive for miles and points donations should have you at least consider other avenues for your philanthropic endeavors. Keep in mind that this drawback only matters for taxpayers who itemize deductions on their income tax returns. If you're like most people and take the standard deduction instead of itemizing, you wouldn't be able to get a charitable tax deduction from any donation. You might not meet the donation minimums Some rewards programs have a minimum donation amount for select charities. For example, you’d have to donate at least 2,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points for a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. That minimum amount makes it tougher to donate points that may be collecting dust in your loyalty account. Donate to an organization that books travel with miles To maximize the value of your donation, consider a charity that books travel directly with your miles or points rather than donating directly through your loyalty program's portal. For example, Miles4Migrants uses donated airline miles and credit card points to directly book award travel for refugees and asylum seekers. “Instead of maximizing points and miles to book a dream trip, we do it to help refugees reach safe new beginnings,” said Patrick Stouffer, partnerships manager at Miles4Migrants, in an email. Miles4Migrants has redeemed over 775 million donated miles in pursuit of their mission, with a cash value of over $17 million. That expertise allows them to get more value out of every donation. “Our team has the specialized knowledge necessary to stretch the value of every point or mile, ensuring donations go as far as possible,” Stouffer said. “Even if you aren’t able to reap any tax advantages of donating your points, at least you’ll know they made the largest possible impact.” Use cash back instead Direct cash donations help avoid the downsides of donating miles and points. If you have a credit card that earns cash back , or if you earn cash rewards through a shopping portal like TopCashBack or Rakuten , consider cashing out and donating those rewards instead of your miles and points. With a cash donation, you’ll know the exact value a charity will receive from your donation and likely qualify for a potential itemized deduction on your taxes. Some rewards programs make this process simple and transparent. Travel rewards programs sometimes incentivize charitable giving by offering bonus points for your cash donations. For example, American Airlines offers 10 AAdvantage miles for every dollar members contribute to the charity Stand Up To Cancer. That extra incentive can be an individual boon for your charitable donation. Just be aware that any points or miles you receive from such promotions will reduce the tax deductibility of your contribution. American Airlines values those bonus miles you receive through donations at 3 cents each. So if you donate $100 and receive 1,000 AAdvantage miles, American values those miles at $30. You’ll receive a tax form declaring those rewards as $30 in income, giving you a qualifying tax deduction of $70. When you donate cash and receive bonus points, the charity still receives your full donation and you get a slug of points. While you'll have to pay taxes on those points, it can still be a big win for your future travel plans. More From NerdWallet Need Credit Card Debt Relief? The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 surged to record highs on Tuesday despite inflammatory remarks from President-elect Donald Trump about tariffs, but shipping stocks were not so fortunate. In fact it was hard to find any green numbers in the shipping space when trading closed in New York on Tuesday afternoon, as listed companies fell into the red across multiple operating sectors.

The mother of Elon Musk , the world’s richest man, stopped by Fox Business on Monday to scold those who call her son “wealthy,” claiming it was “degrading” and that she would prefer he be referred to as the “genius of the world.” With her son now president-elect Donald Trump ’s “First Buddy” and in charge of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) , Maye Musk sat down with Fox Business anchor Stuart Varney to gush over her 53-year-old child’s accomplishments. Besides talking about the younger Musk’s companies SpaceX, Tesla and X (formerly Twitter), she also dished on how well her son and Trump get along, especially since the election. “I’ve seen them together, but very shortly. I live in New York, and they’re in Mar-a-Lago or at a SpaceX launch, and they just seem to be having fun. A lot of fun,” she declared, adding: “And it’s nice for both of them to have fun, and [Elon] really respects him a lot and is really happy that there’s a future for America now.” She also claimed that it would be “very easy” for her son and DOGE co-chair Vivek Ramaswamy to slash the federal workforce and cut spending, citing Elon Musk ’s severe and immediate layoffs when he purchased Twitter in 2022. Seemingly parroting her son’s talking points, she absolutely trashed the press. “What they call mainstream media, but I call them dishonest Democrat media, they will be trying to break up the relationship. They will be hating everything," she said. "And I told that to Elon, he said he expects that because they were dishonest before the election.” In the end, though, Maye wanted to make sure everyone knew her son was the best at, well, everything. And that referencing his massive wealth was a pejorative. “I don’t like the word ‘wealthy’ or ‘billionaire’ or things like that because I think it’s degrading,” she exclaimed to Varney. “I think he’s the genius of the world, and people are loving him for that! ... They love him because of what he does, and they respect him. And I’m very proud of him.” Once the clip of Maye’s comments was shared on social media , it didn’t take long for the mockery to start flowing. For instance, multiple people reacted by sharing the meme of The Simpson’s nebbish character Milhouse van Houten sheepishly saying: “But my mom thinks I’m cool!” At least one person superimposed an image of Elon on top of Milhouse in the cartoon. “Bet your mom doesn’t go on Fox News to tell everybody what a good and impressive boy you are. (It is because you and your mom have dignity),” Wonkette managing editor Evan Hurst quipped on Bluesky. One social media account snarked that the “mother of one of the most powerful men in the world going on the ‘News’ to complain about people hating on her kid is North Korean-level dictatorial bulls***,” while another Bluesky user added : “If my mommy had to go on the news to call me the ‘genius of the world’ and to tell people to stop being mean to me, [I] think [I]would die of shame and embarrassment.”BEIRUT -- In 2006, after a bruising monthlong war between Israel and Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah militant group, the United Nations Security Council unanimously voted for a resolution to end the conflict and pave the way for lasting security along the border. But while there was relative calm for nearly two decades, Resolution 1701’s terms were never fully enforced. Now, figuring out how to finally enforce it is key to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal approved by Israel on Tuesday. In late September, after nearly a year of low-level clashes , the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah spiraled into all-out war and an Israeli ground invasion . As Israeli jets pound deep inside Lebanon and Hezbollah fires rockets deeper into northern Israel, U.N. and diplomatic officials again turned to the 2006 resolution in a bid to end the conflict. Years of deeply divided politics and regionwide geopolitical hostilities have halted substantial progress on its implementation, yet the international community believes Resolution 1701 is still the brightest prospect for long-term stability between Israel and Lebanon. Almost two decades after the last war between Israel and Hezbollah, the United States led shuttle diplomacy efforts between Lebanon and Israel to agree on a ceasefire proposal that renewed commitment to the resolution, this time with an implementation plan to try to bring the document back to life. In 2000, Israel withdrew its forces from most of southern Lebanon along a U.N.-demarcated “Blue Line” that separated the two countries and the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, which most of the world considers occupied Syrian territory. U.N. peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL , increased their presence along the line of withdrawal. Resolution 1701 was supposed to complete Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon and ensure Hezbollah would move north of the Litani River, keeping the area exclusively under the Lebanese military and U.N. peacekeepers. Up to 15,000 U.N. peacekeepers would help to maintain calm, return displaced Lebanese and secure the area alongside the Lebanese military. The goal was long-term security, with land borders eventually demarcated to resolve territorial disputes. The resolution also reaffirmed previous ones that call for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon — Hezbollah among them. “It was made for a certain situation and context,” Elias Hanna, a retired Lebanese army general, told The Associated Press. “But as time goes on, the essence of the resolution begins to hollow.” For years, Lebanon and Israel blamed each other for countless violations along the tense frontier. Israel said Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force and growing arsenal remained, and accused the group of using a local environmental organization to spy on troops. Lebanon complained about Israeli military jets and naval ships entering Lebanese territory even when there was no active conflict. “You had a role of the UNIFIL that slowly eroded like any other peacekeeping with time that has no clear mandate,” said Joseph Bahout, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy at the American University of Beirut. “They don’t have permission to inspect the area without coordinating with the Lebanese army.” UNIFIL for years has urged Israel to withdraw from some territory north of the frontier, but to no avail. In the ongoing war, the peacekeeping mission has accused Israel, as well as Hezbollah , of obstructing and harming its forces and infrastructure. Hezbollah’s power, meanwhile, has grown, both in its arsenal and as a political influence in the Lebanese state. The Iran-backed group was essential in keeping Syrian President Bashar Assad in power when armed opposition groups tried to topple him, and it supports Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Yemen. It has an estimated 150,000 rockets and missiles, including precision-guided missiles pointed at Israel, and has introduced drones into its arsenal . Hanna says Hezbollah “is something never seen before as a non-state actor” with political and military influence. Israel's security Cabinet approved the ceasefire agreement late Tuesday, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office. The ceasefire is set to take hold at 4 a.m. local time Wednesday. Efforts led by the U.S. and France for the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah underscored that they still view the resolution as key. For almost a year, Washington has promoted various versions of a deal that would gradually lead to its full implementation. International mediators hope that by boosting financial support for the Lebanese army — which was not a party in the Israel-Hezbollah war — Lebanon can deploy some 6,000 additional troops south of the Litani River to help enforce the resolution. Under the deal, an international monitoring committee headed by the United States would oversee implementation to ensure that Hezbollah and Israel’s withdrawals take place. It is not entirely clear how the committee would work or how potential violations would be reported and dealt with. The circumstances now are far more complicated than in 2006. Some are still skeptical of the resolution's viability given that the political realities and balance of power both regionally and within Lebanon have dramatically changed since then. “You’re tying 1701 with a hundred things,” Bahout said. “A resolution is the reflection of a balance of power and political context.” Now with the ceasefire in place, the hope is that Israel and Lebanon can begin negotiations to demarcate their land border and settle disputes over several points along the Blue Line for long-term security after decades of conflict and tension.

Costs Don't miss out on the headlines from Costs. Followed categories will be added to My News. An increasing number of Aussies are falling victim to fraudsters stealing their card details to splash thousands of dollars at JB HI FI stores. Money that most victims will never see again. Former President of Hawthorn Football Club and current Chair of Golf Australia, Andrew Newbold is just one of countless Australians battling with their banks to have that stolen money returned. When Andrew received an alert from his credit card provider, Latitude, verifying that a single purchase was made at an Essendon JB HI FI, he assumed that the transaction was for a camera his daughter had purchased earlier that morning. Little did he know scammers had drained over $11,000 from his credit card, hitting up three different JB HI FI stores around the centre of Melbourne. Andrew Newbold was shocked to see $11,000 worth of fraudulent purchases on his credit card, but his bank was reluctant to act. Picture: Supplied After checking his online accounts, spotting four purchases ranging from $4994 to $1997, he immediately put a lock on his card and rang Latitude’s customer service line. Having alerted Latitude to the fraudulent purchases he was told there was nothing they could do to stop the transactions, as goods had been exchanged in store. However the saga did not stop there. Before his second, newly issued card had even arrived at his doorstep, another fraudulent transaction appeared on his account. This time, $50 at a barbecue chicken shop on Elizabeth street in Melbourne’s centre. Fearing thousands more would surely be spent, and unable to put a lock on a card he had not yet received, Andrew again rang Latitude’s customer service line. The response from Latitude’s fraud and transaction disputes team. Picture: Supplied “I couldn’t believe the card was still on its way from Latitude, and the fraudster was still able to use it but I couldn’t,” Andrew said. Upon talking to a representative from Latitude, Andrew says “I was told they (Latitude) hadn’t removed the token associated with the card.” Credit card tokenization is a security measure where a customer’s primary account number (PAN) is replaced with a series of randomly generated numbers. It is unclear how exactly the scammers were able to bypass these measures. Dissatisfied with the response from Latitude, Andrew submitted a transaction dispute and began contacting the JB HI FI stores where the fraudulent transactions had been made. “I called Essendon JB HI FI and was put through to a manager who informed me that the purchases were in fact made in-store,” Andrew said. Newbold took it upon himself to investigate exactly what happened, calling the JB HI FI stores where the fraudulent purchases were made. Picture: Supplied/REA Two weeks later Latitude responded to the dispute but maintained the transactions would remain on the account. A customer specialist from Latitude’s Fraud Claims and Disputes team responded, “We’ve found that the purchase was made using the contactless technology in your card/digital wallet, meaning that your card/device was in the store for the transaction.” “As we understand that the card/device hasn’t left your possession, unfortunately we can’t dispute the transaction with the merchant without compelling evidence that you didn’t make or authorise the transaction,” they said. After news.com reached out to Latitude for comment, it backflipped on its decision informing Mr Newbold that his money would be refunded in full with an additional $200 as compensation. A spokesman for Latitude said, “Latitude has confirmed that the customer was the subject of a sophisticated fraud. We have apologised to the customer and waived the fraudulent transactions.” Latitude originally rejected a request to reimburse Mr Newbold, but backflipped after being contacted by news.com. “I’m lucky this hasn’t created havoc in my life, but I’m sure for some people it would and that behaviour is unacceptable I would’ve thought.” Mr Newbold said. “If I’ve lost my actual card or misplaced it, I could sort of understand the bank’s position, but when I’m sitting at home on a Saturday afternoon and I haven’t done anything to put my card at risk, they should definitely be refunding that money.” Earlier this year the UK implemented measures mandating that all banks using the faster payment system reimburse fraud victims up to £85,000 ($169,121 AUD). Another victim who requested to remain anonymous, received an email from JB HI FI notifying him of a purchase on his account, but thought they may have mistakenly put down his email for somebody else’s purchase. However upon checking their bank account they realised scammers had spent almost $2000 on a brand new iPhone 16 through JB HI FI’s click and collect system. “So they bought the phone online then went in store to collect it and there was never any authentication” the victim said. This is one of a series of frauds committed at JB HI FI’s across Australia in the last month. Picture: NewsWire / Gaye Gerard “I have absolutely no idea how they were able to hand over the goods, I would’ve thought at this dollar amount there would be two-factor authentication or some kind of identification process in place.” Citibank has provided the victim with a temporary credit to his account while they investigate the fraud but the victim says this may be a lengthy process. These are just the latest cases in a spate of frauds sweeping Melbourne’s JB HI FI outlets. Just last month another Melburnian had $14,000 drained from his accounts in a similar fashion, with scammers hitting up five different JB HI FI stores. After Bendigo Bank refused to refund the fraudulent purchases, he took matters into his own hands to investigate the matter. “Why don’t (they) want to stop it happening? The bank says they are up to date with scams but prevention is better than a cure – they should get on top of how people are doing it, why they are doing it and make their product more secure.” Bendigo similarly refunded the $14,000 following outreach for comment by news.com.
