A 16-year-old student of Everest Height International Academy, Gwagwalada, Abuja, Isimah Oluchukwu. has emerged winner of this year’s National Essay Competition organised by the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc among senior secondary school students nationwide. She was announced the winner at the grand finale of the competition and award ceremony held at UBA House, Marina, Lagos, on Tuesday. She is the sixth female student to win the star prize in six years even as fewer male students made the top 20 finalists invited to the award ceremony. UBA National essay competition, which is an annual event and with this year’s edition, the 14th in the series, is one of the major UBA intervention initiatives on education domiciled under its social arm, UBA Foundation. Oluchukwu, an SS3 student and fourth child of her parents defeated Christabel Obinna- Chukwu, a 15-year-old student of Regina Pacis College, Abuja and Greatness Emediong, a student of Nigerian Christian Institution, Akwa Ibom State, to second and third prizes, respectively and also 17 other finalists from among over 10,000 students who submitted entries nationwide. While Oluchukwu was rewarded for her effort with a N7.5 million scholarship grant to study at any university of her choice in Africa, a trophy, laptop, certificate of merit, and a school bag, Christabel and Emediong on their part, won N5 million and N3.5 million scholarship grants respectively also to study at their choice universities in Africa and equally received a laptop, certificate of merit, and a school bag each. Oluchukwu , who is aspiring to become a surgeon and was accompanied to the event by her mother, Mrs Comfort Isimah, told Nigerian Tribune that winning the competition was really tasking as she burnt night candles to read and research to put down the winning essay. It was her first attempt to participate in the competition but she has been winning awards in the past in her school. All the 20 finalists who scaled through the first two stages wrote on “Examine the causes, consequences and solutions of Japa Syndrome in Nigeria.” While commending UBA Foundation for providing the platform, Oluchukwu said she had gained additional knowledge about contemporary issues in the country and that hard work and commitment are certainly rewarding. In his remark at the event, the Managing Director/CEO of UBA Plc, Mr Oliver Alawuba, said UBA is particularly excited to be using the platform to boost education and reading culture and also encourage healthy competition among secondary school students in Nigeria and other African countries, noting that the annual event is designed to positively change the world. According to him, we believe so much in quality education and we believe that the future of the world is in Africa and the future of Africa is in Nigeria. He noted that the competition has produced so many winners with many of them now contributing meanigfully to the national development. He promised that the bank through the competition would continue to support the education of Nigerians who want to study in any of the African universities. Also speaking, MD/CEO, UBA Foundation, Bola Atta congratulated and commended the winners for their exceptional performance, urging those who did not win the major prize this year not to be discouraged but be more committed to enable them to do better in future. She said the foundation had extended the competition to many other African countries where UBA operates including Gabon, Mozambique and so forth as a way of giving back to them. Giving more insght into the competition, Atta explained that the best 75 were first shorlisted from the pool that made the second stage before the 20 finaists emerged with each of them was given N75,000 as reward to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the bank. She, however, pointed out that the competition had really improved their wriiten prowess, confidence, critical thinking and also knowledge on social issues in their environment. In her part, one of the panel of jurists, who assessed all the entries, Prof Ini Uko from University of Uyo, said many of the entries were actually poor as many students were not familiar with national issues around them let alone understand what they are about and also that some used slangs in their essays. She said their entries showed that many of the students are too engrossed with social media and things that would not add value to them rather than be committed to their studies. The Cubs sent third baseman Isaac Paredes, right-hander Hayden Wesneski and Cam Smith, one of their top infield prospects, to the Astros for Tucker, who is eligible for free agency after the 2025 season. Tucker was limited to 78 games this year because of a fractured right shin, but he hit .289 with 23 homers and 49 RBIs for the AL West champions. He batted .284 with 29 homers, an AL-best 112 RBIs and 30 steals for Houston in 2023. Tucker, who turns 28 on Jan. 17, joins a crowded situation in Chicago's outfield, but the Cubs are reportedly looking to trade Cody Bellinger, who also can play first base. While Paredes and Wesneski could have an immediate impact, Smith also was a key component of the deal. However, the five charges against the 36-year-old were dropped on Thursday. In an interview with The Times, Dr Proudman described the position of Mark Neale, the board’s director-general, as “untenable” and said its chairwoman, Kathryn Stone, should also stand down. “They need a change, not just in those two individuals, though, because, of course, it seeps down to the rest of the organisation,” she said. She told the paper she “genuinely” wanted to work with the Bar Standards Board in helping them to understand how misogyny and sexism have impacted women at the bar. However, she said that “under the current leadership, it’s just not going to be possible”. The charges alleged Dr Proudman had “failed to act with integrity” in posting the tweets, that they amounted to professional misconduct, were “misleading” and “inaccurately reflected the findings of the judge” in the case. The women’s rights campaigner was also accused of behaving in a way “which was likely to diminish the trust and confidence which the public placed in her and in the profession”, and that she “knowingly or recklessly misled or attempted to mislead the public” by making the posts. But panel chairman Nicholas Ainley found her tweets are protected under Article 10 of the Human Rights Act 1998 and the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects the right of freedom of expression. He said her tweets did not “gravely damage” the judiciary, which would “put them outside” of Article 10 protection, even if they “might not have been pleasant for any judge to read” or even “hurtful”. “We take the view that the judiciary of England and Wales is far more robust than that,” he said. The panel also concluded that some of the tweets were only inaccurate “to a minor degree” and not to the extent necessary for a charge of a lack of integrity. Speaking after the hearing, Dr Proudman told the PA news agency: “This ruling is a victory for women’s rights and a right to freedom of speech. “The prosecution against me brought by my regulatory body, the Bar Standards Board, should never have happened and I said that from day one. “I criticised a domestic abuse judgment. Everyone should have the right to do that, whether you’re a barrister or not. Our justice system, which I strongly believe in, is robust enough to withstand criticism from me.” She believes her tweets help “foster confidence” in the justice system, adding: “Only that way can we go about building change and a better treatment for all victims, women and children and men who are affected by domestic abuse.” Explaining that the BSB appears to have spent almost £40,000 “of barristers’ money” on instructing counsel in her case, she added: “I think it’s shameful that they’re using our money to pay for, in my view, malicious, vexatious prosecutions which I have no doubt was a personal attack against me as a woman and as a feminist, as an outspoken critic and advocate for women’s rights.” Dr Proudman called for “systemic change” within the board. “They don’t understand gender, they don’t understand diversity, I don’t think they’ve ever heard of the concept misogyny and certainly not institutional misogyny,” she said. “Until they recognise the deeply rooted, entrenched issue of bullying, harassment, sexism at the bar, for which I have suffered relentlessly... and own up to it I don’t think we’re going to see any change and I have no confidence in them.” She told of how male barristers have called her insulting names on social media and made derogatory comments about her. In the posts on April 6 2022, Dr Proudman referenced a case in which her client alleged she had been subjected to coercive and controlling behaviour by her husband, a part-time judge, meaning she had been “unable to freely enter” the couple’s “post-nuptial” financial agreement. Commenting on the ruling by Family Court judge Sir Jonathan Cohen, Dr Proudman wrote: “I represented Amanda Traharne. “She said she was coerced into signing a post-nuptial agreement by her husband (who is a part-time judge). I lost the case. “I do not accept the Judge’s reasoning. I will never accept the minimisation of domestic abuse.” She continued: “Demeaning the significance of domestic abuse has the affect of silencing victims and rendering perpetrators invisible. “This judgement has echoes of (t)he ‘boys club’ which still exists among men in powerful positions.” In the thread, Dr Proudman wrote that the judge had described the relationship of the couple as “tempestuous”, which she argued was a “trivialisation” of domestic abuse. “Tempestuous? Sir Keir Starmer has led a host of tributes to former US president Jimmy Carter, saying he “redefined the post-presidency with a remarkable commitment to social justice and human rights at home and abroad”. The Prime Minister said Mr Carter, who died aged 100, will be remembered for the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, as well as his “decades of selfless public service”. He added that it was the Democrat’s “lifelong dedication to peace” that led to him receiving the Nobel Peace prize in 2002.
