California 74, Arizona 62Luigi Mangione, charged with killing the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, had a lower back condition. Spondylolisthesis occurs when one vertebra in your spine slips out of alignment. Mangione seemingly frequented a subreddit for the condition and wrote about symptoms. Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old man charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, suffered from a spinal condition. Mangione's social media accounts included several references to back pain. On X, Mangione's banner included an X-ray image of a spine after a spinal fusion. On his Reddit account, he posted in a subreddit for spondylolisthesis, a lower back condition most often caused by joint deterioration. Mangione also mentioned he had spondylolisthesis in handwritten notes from 2019 reviewed by Business Insider. Spondylolisthesis can cause pain and stiffness According to Cleveland Clinic, spondylolisthesis is usually caused by aging (as the discs holding the vertebrae weaken) or injuries. It is a condition when one of the bones in the spine falls out of alignment and "presses down" on the vertebra below it. That pressure on nearby nerves can cause lower back pain. Other symptoms include sciatica (nerve pain that runs down from the lower back to the legs), back stiffness, numbness, and difficulty walking. Not everyone needs spinal fusion surgery to realign their vertebrae; depending on the severity of the symptoms, rest, physical therapy, and wearing a brace can help reduce pain, as can taking over-the-counter medications when symptoms flare up. Mangione had sciatica, a common symptom In 2022, Mangione moved to a co-living space in Honolulu called Surfbreak. According to a Reddit post, he experienced sciatica, nerve pain that runs down from the lower back to the legs, for the first time after a surf session. "A few weeks later I slipped on a piece of paper and my right glute locked and right leg shut down for a week," he wrote in 2022. "Couldn't support any weight on it." Prior to his back surgery in 2023, Mangione also described having "near-constant burning/twitching in both ankles/calves" and "back and genital pain" on Reddit — symptoms of sciatica. R.J. Martin, who owns Surfbreak, told the New York Times that shortly after moving in, Mangione experienced such debilitating pain from a group surfing lesson that he needed Martin to switch out his mattress. Mangione also told Martin that his condition prevented him from being in a romantic relationship. "He knew that dating and being physically intimate with his back condition wasn't possible," Martin said. "I remember him telling me that, and my heart just breaks." At first, the back surgery seemed to improve Mangione's symptoms — he posted in 2023 that it was a "success." But by June 2024, he started criticizing doctors online and eventually lost touch with friends and family. According to Mayo Clinic, spinal fusion surgeries for spondylolisthesis "can have very good outcomes when performed well and for the right reasons."

Qatar National Archives in first participation in Darb Al SaaiThe New Orleans Pelicans have no interest in trading Herb Jones, sources tell The Stein Line. Jones signed a four-year, $54 million deal with the Pelicans in restricted free agency during the 2023 offseason. Jones, who cannot become a free agent until 2027, is averaging 10.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.9 steals in 31.3 minutes over seven games this season for the Pelicans. Jones is shooting just 29.2 percent on three-pointers this season after shooting 41.8 percent last season.knows there are tons of questions about his future with the . He might get traded, he might leave as a free agent next summer, he might exercise a $52.4 million option to return to the Heat, or he might get a new contract. "Who knows?" Butler asked. The Heat forward, who has led the team to a pair of NBA Finals trips in his Miami tenure, said Wednesday that he doesn't mind his name being in the rumor mill. The Heat are open to listening to offers for Butler and making a deal if the proposal is right, earlier this week. That wouldn't be surprising, given Butler's contract status and the possibility that he might leave with the Heat getting nothing in return next summer. "I actually like it," said Butler, who is averaging 19 points per game this season. "It's good to be talked about. I don't think there's such a thing as bad publicity -- to a point." The Heat could have offered an extension last summer and chose not to, presumably for a variety of reasons including Butler's age -- he's 35 -- and the fact that he missed 26% of Miami's games over his first five seasons with the team. He still clearly impacts winning: Miami is 8-2 this season when he scores at least 18 points. And the Heat aren't new to trade speculation; has been the centerpiece of rumors in each of the past three summers. Butler said Wednesday that money doesn't really matter to him at this point, adding that he's not fixated on extensions or trades. "My kids matter, my happiness matters, my well-being matters and my family matters," Butler said. "Right now, it's all about competing, staying healthy, playing some great basketball. I think I've done that so far, so we'll see what we got." He stopped short of saying that he wants to absolutely remain in Miami. "I'm pretty sure y'all are going to get a report that's going to say otherwise anyways, so there's no sense in me answering that question," Butler said. It has been social media fodder for a few days, with some even suggesting that Butler's hair dye in recent weeks -- sometimes yellow, sometimes blue, sometimes red -- has matched the teams some of the trade speculation links him to like , and . That said, he has insisted since arriving in Miami that he wants to bring the team another championship. That stance has not changed. "We're going to continue to win and I'm proud of the guys," Butler said. "You see everybody out here working and we know what we're capable of."

New Delhi, Dec 21 (PTI) Union Health Minister J P Nadda on Saturday held a virtual meeting with chief ministers/lieutenant governors, and health ministers of states and Union Territories, seeking their support towards the ongoing 100-day Intensified TB Elimination Campaign. At the meeting, Nadda urged the states and Union Territories (UTs) to monitor the campaign at the state level, and ensure the same is done by the political and administrative leadership at the district level. He suggested that to ensure a whole-of-government approach, other ministries and departments can be roped in to support the campaign activities in the spirit of Jan Bhagidari, similar to the approach taken at the national level. Nadda also requested the chief ministers to involve elected representatives, especially MLAs and councillors as well as Panchayati Raj Institutions, in the campaign to help mobilise the communities. Highlighting that the rate of TB decline in India from 2015 to 2024 at 17.7 per cent is double the global average of 8.3 per cent, Nadda said deaths due to TB have reduced significantly in the country by 21.4 per cent in the last 10 years. He also highlighted the importance of active TB testing, screening and diagnosis of patients, and urged the participants to actively monitor the campaign in the identified districts in their respective states. Underlining the support that state ministers can provide to the campaign, he requested them to promote the initiative in their meetings and rallies and come forward as ‘Ni-Kshay Mitras’ to adopt TB patients. Noting that the states have nearly two months’ stock of TB medicines, the minister said the Centre is working towards ensuring advance stock of at least six months to be made available to the states. He concluded his address by encouraging all the stakeholders to reiterate their commitment to eradicate TB. An overview of the 100-day campaign, which aims to reduce TB incidence and mortality in 347 priority districts across the country, was presented during the meeting. It was informed that to increase detection, intensified case finding drives will be conducted using advanced screening and diagnostic technologies to reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment initiation. Parallelly, to reduce mortality due to TB, the programme will expand access to novel initiatives such as Differentiated TB Care to provide specialised care to high-risk patients and increased nutritional support through th Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana. The state ministers were also informed about the various community mobilisation activities that should be undertaken during the campaign, including over 80,000 Ni-kshay Shivirs to monitor progress. Building on the Jan Bhagidaari approach, the campaign aims to mobilise community members to undertake Ni-kshay Shapaths, and urge community leaders, individuals, NGOs and corporates to become Ni-kshay Mitras. Alongside, TB Vijaetas (TB champions) and Ni-kshay Mitras will be recognised for their contributions which will further inspire collective action. Lastly, involvement of Panchayati Raj Institution members will be critical while regular Gram Sabhas on TB will be organised to raise community awareness while ensuring the uptake of essential TB services. Since the launch of the campaign, 53 lakh vulnerable individuals have been screened. Out of these, 2.21 lakh individuals have been tested, leading to the diagnosis of 22,178 new patients. Through the Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana, 17,621 beneficiaries have received direct benefit transfers (DBT), and in total, 16 lakh beneficiaries have been paid Rs 416 crore. Additionally, 1,630 new Ni-kshay Mitras have been registered, collectively adopting over 12,000 patients during the campaign period. Cumulatively, 1.8 lakh Ni-kshay Mitras have adopted 8.63 lakh patients. PTI PLB ARI This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Δ document.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value", ( new Date() ).getTime() );By Stephen Beech via SWNS Cleaning surfaces every two hours at airports cuts potentially deadly norovirus infections by 83%, according to a new study. Researchers found that airport restaurants had the highest risk of norovirus transmission . But frequently disinfecting surfaces, mask-wearing and antimicrobial surface coatings at the transport hubs can all help prevent the highly contagious illness - also known as the winter vomiting bug - from spreading, say scientists. Study author Professor Nan Zhang, of the Beijing University of Technology in China, said: "Norovirus causes severe vomiting and diarrhea and is responsible for about 685 million cases and 200,000 deaths each year. "The virus is primarily transmitted through surfaces and outbreaks during air travel are especially common, due to the large number of public surfaces in airports." (PLOS Computational Biology via SWNS) To investigate the risk of norovirus infection from surfaces among passengers in different zones of the airport, the research team collected real touch data from 21.3 hours of video, which captured almost 26,000 touches. They developed a model of surface transmission and simulated the risk of infection from norovirus and the effectiveness of various interventions in different airport areas. Zhang said: "The touch data showed that, without any interventions, restaurants at airports had the highest risk of norovirus transmission, with approximately 4.6 out of 51,494 travelers infected. "Disinfecting public surfaces every two hours reduced the risk of norovirus infection per visit to the airport by 83.2%. "In contrast, handwashing every two hours reduced the risk by only 2%, and mask-wearing 50% of the time reduced risk by 48.0%, because masks stop people from touching their face. CDC "Furthermore, using antimicrobial copper or copper-nickel alloy coatings for most public surfaces lowered the infection risk by 15.9% to 99.2%." He says the study, published in the journal PLOS Computational Biology , provides "crucial" insights for developing infection prevention and control strategies specifically tailored for norovirus within airport environments. Zhang noted that the data for the study was collected during the COVID-19 pandemic , so surface-touching behaviors may have been different from normal. But he said that, overall, the simulated results indicated that public surface disinfection, mask-wearing wearing and the use of antimicrobial surfaces are effective ways of controlling the spread of norovirus via surfaces. Zhang added: "Regular surface infection is much more effective than regular handwashing for blocking norovirus transmission via fomite route in airports."
