It may also threaten the existence of future generations. The process consumes about 2% of the world's total energy supply, and the hydrogen required for the reaction mostly comes from fossil fuels. Taking inspiration from how nature—including lightning—produces ammonia, a team led by the University at Buffalo has developed a reactor that produces the chemical commodity from nitrogen in the air and water, without any carbon footprint . This plasma-electrochemical reactor, described in a study published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society , can sustain a high ammonia production rate of approximately 1 gram per day for over 1,000 hours at room temperature, and does so directly from air. The researchers say this is a significant advance toward green ammonia synthesis at an industrially competitive production rate and reaction stability. "Ammonia is often considered the chemical that feeds the world, but we also have to face the realization that the Haber-Bosch process has not been modernized since its invention 100 years ago. It still uses high-temperature, high-pressure processing, and generates a large carbon footprint, making it unsustainable for the long term," says the study's corresponding author, Chris Li, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry in the UB College of Arts and Sciences. "Our process only requires air and water, and can be powered by renewable electricity." Mimicking nature's nitrogen cycle Nature has its own way of producing fertilizer. In nitrogen fixation , the electrical energy of a lightning strike breaks up nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere to form different nitrogen oxide species. After falling down as rainwater, nitrogen oxides are converted into ammonia by bacteria in the soil, supplying plants with nutrients. In the UB-led team's two-step reactor, the role of lightning is replaced with plasma and the role of bacteria replaced by a catalyst of copper-palladium. "Our plasma reactor converts humidified air into nitrogen oxide fragments, which are then placed in an electrochemical reactor that uses the copper-palladium catalyst to convert them into ammonia," Li says. Crucially, the catalyst is able to adsorb and stabilize the numerous nitrogen dioxide intermediates created by the plasma reactor. The team's graph theory algorithm identified that most nitrogen oxide compounds have to cycle through nitric oxide or amine as an intermediate step before becoming ammonia. This allowed the team to intelligently design a catalyst that binds favorably with those two compounds. "When plasma energy or a lightning strike activates nitrogen, you generate a soup of nitrogen oxide compounds. To simultaneously convert, in our case, up to eight different chemical compounds into ammonia is incredibly difficult," says Xiaoli Ge, the study's first author and a postdoctoral researcher in Li's lab. "Graph theory essentially allows us to map out all the different reaction paths and then identify a bottleneck chemical. We then optimize our electrochemical reactor to stabilize the bottleneck chemical, so that all the different intermediates will be selectively transferred into ammonia." Scaling up Li's team is currently in the process of scaling up their reactor and are exploring both a startup and partnerships with industry to help commercialize it. UB's Technology Transfer Office has filed a patent application on the reactor and methods for its use. Over half the world's ammonia is produced by four countries—China, the United States, Russia and India—while many developing countries are unable to produce their own. While the Haber-Bosch process must be conducted on a large scale in a centralized power plant, Li says their system can be done at a much smaller scale. "You can imagine our reactors in something like a medium-sized shipping container with solar panels on the roof. This can then be placed anywhere in the world and generate ammonia on demand for that region," he says. "That's a very exciting advantage of our system, and it will allow us to produce ammonia for underdeveloped regions with limited access to the Haber-Bosch process." Special counsel Jack Smith’s move on Monday to abandon the federal election interference case against Trump means jurors will likely never decide whether the president-elect is criminally responsible for his attempts to cling to power after losing the 2020 campaign. The decision to walk away from the election charges and the separate classified documents case against Trump marks an abrupt end of the Justice Department’s unprecedented legal effort that once threatened his liberty but appears only to have galvanized his supporters. The abandonment of the cases accusing Trump of endangering American democracy and national security does away with the most serious legal threats he was facing as he returns to the White House. It was the culmination of a monthslong defense effort to delay the proceedings at every step and use the criminal allegations to Trump’s political advantage, putting the final word in the hands of voters instead of jurors. “We always knew that the rich and powerful had an advantage, but I don’t think we would have ever believed that somebody could walk away from everything,” said Stephen Saltzburg, a George Washington University law professor and former Justice Department official. “If there ever was a Teflon defendant, that’s Donald Trump.” While prosecutors left the door open to the possibility that federal charges could be re-filed against Trump after he leaves office, that seems unlikely. DETROIT (AP) — If Donald Trump makes good on his threat to slap 25% tariffs on everything imported from Mexico and Canada, the price increases that could follow will collide with his campaign promise to give American families a break from inflation. Economists say companies would have little choice but to pass along the added costs, dramatically raising prices for food, clothing, automobiles, booze and other goods. The president-elect floated the tariff idea, including additional 10% taxes on goods from China, as a way to force the countries to halt the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the U.S. But his posts Monday on Truth Social threatening the tariffs on his first day in office could just be a negotiating ploy to get the countries to change behavior. High food prices were a major issue in voters picking Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris, but tariffs almost certainly would push those costs up even further. For instance, the Produce Distributors Association, a Washington trade group, said Tuesday that tariffs will raise prices for fresh fruit and vegetables and hurt U.S. farmers when other countries retaliate. “Tariffs distort the marketplace and will raise prices along the supply chain, resulting in the consumer paying more at the checkout line,” said Alan Siger, association president. Mexico and Canada are two of the biggest exporters of fresh fruit and vegetables to the U.S. In 2022, Mexico supplied 51% of fresh fruit and 69% of fresh vegetables imported by value into the U.S., while Canada supplied 2% of fresh fruit and 20% of fresh vegetables. People looking to buy a new vehicle likely would see big price increases as well, at a time when costs have gone up so much they are out of reach for many. The average price of a new vehicle now runs around $48,000. About 15% of the 15.6 million new vehicles sold in the U.S. last year came from Mexico, while 8% crossed the border from Canada, according to Global Data. Much of the tariffs would get passed along to consumers, unless automakers can somehow quickly find productivity improvements to offset them, said C.J. Finn, U.S. automotive sector leader for PwC. That means even more consumers “would potentially get priced out,” Finn said. Hardest hit would be Volkswagen, Stellantis, General Motors and Ford, Bernstein analyst Daniel Roeska wrote Tuesday in a note to investors. “A 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada would severely cripple the U.S. auto industry,” he said. The tariffs would hurt U.S. industrial production so much that “we expect this is unlikely to happen in practice,” Roeska said. The tariff threat hit auto stocks on Tuesday, particularly shares of GM, which imports about 30% of the vehicles it sells in the U.S. from Canada and Mexico, and Stellantis, which imports about 40% from the two countries. For both, about 55% of their lucrative pickup trucks come from Mexico and Canada. GM stock lost almost 9% of its value, while Stellantis dropped nearly 6%. It's not clear how long the tariffs would last if implemented, but they could force auto executives to move production to the U.S., which could create more jobs in the long run. However, Morningstar analyst David Whiston said automakers probably won't make any immediate moves because they can't quickly change where they build vehicles. Millions of dollars worth of auto parts flow across the borders with Mexico and Canada, and that could raise prices for already costly automobile repairs, Finn said. The Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. said tariffs on tequila or Canadian whisky won’t boost American jobs because they are distinctive products that can only be made in their country of origin. In 2023, the U.S. imported $4.6 billion worth of tequila and $108 million worth of mezcal from Mexico and $537 million worth of spirits from Canada, it said. “Tariffs on spirits products from our neighbors to the north and south are going to hurt U.S. consumers and lead to job losses across the U.S. hospitality industry,” it added. Electronics retailer Best Buy said on its third-quarter earnings conference call that it runs on thin profit margins, so while vendors and the company will shoulder some increases, Best Buy will have to pass tariffs to customers. “These are goods that people need, and higher prices are not helpful,” CEO Corie Barry said. Walmart also warned this week that tariffs could force it to raise prices. Tariffs could trigger supply chain disruptions as people buy goods before they are imposed and companies seek alternate sources of parts, said Rob Handfield, a professor of supply chain management at North Carolina State University. Some businesses might not be able to pass on the costs. “It could actually shut down a lot of industries in the United States. It could actually put a lot of U.S. businesses out of business,” he said. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who talked with Trump after his call for tariffs, said they had a good conversation about working together. For Canada and Mexico, he could say the influx of migrants and drugs are a national security threat, and turn to a section of trade law he used in his first term to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum. The law he would most likely use for Canada and Mexico has a legal process that often takes up to nine months, giving Trump time to seek a deal. If talks failed and the duties were imposed, all three countries would likely retaliate with tariffs on U.S. exports, said Reinsch, who believes Trump's tariffs threat is a negotiating ploy. U.S. companies would lobby intensively against tariffs, and would seek to have products exempted. Some of the biggest exporters from Mexico are U.S. firms that make parts there, Reinsch said. Longer term, Mary Lovely, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said the threat of tariffs could make the U.S. an “unstable partner” in international trade. “It is an incentive to move activity outside the United States to avoid all this uncertainty,” she said. Mood is wrong. In the real world, in America, it’s scoundrel time all the time. Maybe Charles Dickens was right. In “American Notes for General Circulation” (1842), the English literary superstar chronicled his travels and detected a widespread, peculiarly American “love of ‘smart’ dealing” across the land. In business and in politics, Dickens observed, slavish admiration of the con men among them “gilds over many a swindle and gross breach of trust.” And here we are. It’ll pass, this scoundrel reprieve of mine. In fact it just did. All it took was thinking about the conspicuous, roguish outlier on my best-of-2024 list: “Challengers.” It’s what this year needed and didn’t know it: a tricky story of lying, duplicitous weasels on and off the court. The best films this year showed me things I hadn’t seen, following familiar character dynamics into fresh territory. Some were more visually distinctive than others; all made eloquent cases for how, and where, their stories unfolded. “All We Imagine as Light,” recently at the Gene Siskel Film Center, works like a poem, or a sustained exhalation of breath, in its simply designed narrative of three Mumbai hospital workers. Fluid, subtly political, filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s achievement is very nearly perfect. So is cowriter-director RaMell Ross’ adaptation of the Colson Whitehead novel “The Nickel Boys,” arriving in Chicago-area theaters on Jan. 3, 2025. “Nickel Boys,” the film, loses the “the” in Whitehead’s title but gains an astonishingly realized visual perspective. If Ross never makes another movie, he’ll have an American masterpiece to his credit. The following top 10 movies of 2024 are in alphabetical order. Both a mosaic of urban ebb and flow, and a delicate revelation of character, director and writer Payal Kapadia’s Mumbai story is hypnotic, patient and in its more traditional story progression, a second feature every bit as good as Kapadia’s first, 2021’s “A Night of Knowing Nothing.” Mikey Madison gives one of the year’s funniest, saddest, truest performances as a Brooklyn exotic dancer who takes a shine to the gangly son of a Russian oligarch, and he to her. Their transactional courtship and dizzying Vegas marriage, followed by violently escalating complications, add up to filmmaker Sean Baker’s triumph, capped by an ending full of exquisite mysteries of the human heart. As played by Adrien Brody, the title character is a visionary architect and Hungarian Jewish emigre arriving in America in 1947 after the Holocaust. (That said, the title refers to more than one character.) His patron, and his nemesis, is the Philadelphia blueblood industrialist played by Guy Pearce. Director/co-writer Brady Corbet’s thrillingly ambitious epic, imperfect but loaded with rewarding risks, was shot mostly in widescreen VistaVision. Worth seeing on the biggest screen you can find. Opens in Chicago-area theaters on Jan. 10, 2025. Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor play games with each other, on the tennis court and in beds, while director Luca Guadagnino builds to a match-point climax that can’t possibly work, and doesn’t quite — but I saw the thing twice anyway. In Bucharest, production assistant Angela zigzags around the city interviewing people for her employer’s workplace safety video. If that sounds less than promising, even for a deadpan Romanian slice-of-life tragicomedy, go ahead and make the mistake of skipping this one. llinca Manolache is terrific as Angela. Like “Do Not Expect Too Much,” director Agnieszka Holland’s harrowing slice of recent history was a 2023 release, making it to Chicago in early 2024. Set along the densely forested Poland/Belarus border, this is a model of well-dramatized fiction honoring what refugees have always known: the fully justified, ever-present fear of the unknown. A quiet marvel of a feature debut from writer-director Annie Baker, this is a mother/daughter tale rich in ambiguities and wry humor, set in a lovely, slightly forlorn corner of rural Massachusetts. Julianne Nicholson, never better; Zoe Ziegler as young, hawk-eyed Lacy, equally memorable. I love this year’s nicest surprise. The premise: A teenager’s future 39-year-old self appears to her, magically, via a strong dose of mushrooms. The surprise: Writer-director Megan Park gradually deepens her scenario and sticks a powerfully emotional landing. Wonderful work from Aubrey Plaza, Maisy Stella, Maria Dizzia and everybody, really. From the horrific true story of a Florida reform school and its decades of abuse, neglect and enraging injustice toward its Black residents, novelist Colson Whitehead’s fictionalized novel makes a remarkable jump to the screen thanks to co-writer/director RaMell Ross’s feature debut. Cousins, not as close as they once were, reunite for a Holocaust heritage tour in Poland and their own search for their late grandmother’s childhood home. They’re the rootless Benji (Kieran Culkin) and tightly sprung David (Jesse Eisenberg, who wrote and directed). Small but very sure, this movie’s themes of genocidal trauma and Jewish legacy support the narrative every step of the way. Culkin is marvelous; so is the perpetually undervalued Eisenberg. To the above, I’ll add 10 more runners-up, again in alphabetical order: “Blink Twice,” directed by Zoe Kravitz. “Conclave,” directed by Edward Berger. “Dune: Part Two ,” directed by Denis Villeneuve. “Good One ,” directed by India Donaldson. “Hit Man,” directed by Richard Linklater. “Joker: Folie a Deux,” directed by Todd Phillips. “Nosferatu,” directed by Robert Eggers, opens in Chicago-area theaters on Dec. 25. “The Outrun,” directed by Nora Fingscheidt. “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” directed by Johan Grimonprez. “Tuesday,” directed by Daina O. A vulnerable and mentally unwell Illawarra man had the water to his prison cell turned off and repeatedly pleaded for help in the days before he suffered a preventable death. Subscribe now for unlimited access . Login or signup to continue reading Staff discovered Simon Cartwright dead at Silverwater Correctional Complex on the night of September 19, 2021. Deputy state coroner Erin Kennedy found a series of failures led to the 41-year-old's death from septic shock stemming from chronic peptic ulcer disease. Mr Cartwright was on remand for alleged trespassing and intimidation offences when his mental illness was assessed as being so serious that he needed involuntary treatment at a mental health facility. But he was still in the general prison population at the time of his death, having spent 17 days waiting for a bed at Long Bay Forensic Hospital. In her inquest findings, Ms Kennedy said this delay was a "gross systemic failure". Mr Cartwright's family were "completely traumatised" by the circumstances of his death. "We can only regret the many missed opportunities to save him and the thought of what he would have suffered will haunt us forever," they said in a statement to the inquest. 'Mental illness torture' Mr Cartwright had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and was diagnosed in custody with schizoaffective disorder. However, a senior correctional officer and supervisor told the inquest he did not know Mr Cartwright had mental health concerns. "The correctional officers tasked with his day-to-day care did not appear to know or understand that he was a mentally ill person requiring hospitalisation," Ms Kennedy said. One expert witness described the cell where Mr Cartwright was held - which was loud, had no soft surfaces, few blankets and lights on throughout the night - as "mental illness torture". Prison staff turned off the water in the final days of Mr Cartwright's life after he flooded his cell. On September 17 and 18 he repeatedly asked for water with what Ms Kennedy described as "increasing desperation". The day before he died he told a correctional officer he was struggling to breathe and made a "frantic" request for water. In response, a correctional officer told Mr Cartwright his requests were "really entertaining". Ms Kennedy said the evidence suggested correctional staff were using the promise of restoring water to inappropriately bargain with Mr Cartwright for better behaviour. Even when Mr Cartwright complied with their requests, the water was not turned on. The inquest heard no evidence about what precautions were taken to ensure Mr Cartwright had access to sufficient drinking water, and CCTV did not show anyone bringing water to him. Need for urgent care not recognised In those final days, Mr Cartwright was emaciated, had a significant number of unexplained falls, and at times it looked like he was doubled over in pain. "In the days leading up to his death no one identified that Simon was in fact in urgent need of medical attention," Ms Kennedy said. Justice Health had information on Mr Cartwright's gastric ulcer and prior medical treatment, but his medical history was not reviewed during his admission to custody, so his ulcer was not considered. A doctor told the inquest that recurrence of the ulcer should have been recognised as possible and "potentially catastrophic" and Mr Cartwright's thin appearance should have triggered a review of the records. Another specialist said Mr Cartwright probably would have survived had he been given medication four or five days before his death. Ms Kennedy found his death probably would have been avoided if he had been transferred to a hospital soon after he was assessed as needing mental health treatment. Expert witnesses told the inquest that Mr Cartwright's physical condition on September 17 should have triggered an urgent transfer to hospital. Ms Kennedy said no individual doctor or nurse was to be blamed for failing to recognise he needed hospitalisation. "However, the fact that no one observed Simon's dramatic physical decline is evidence of a significant collective and systemic failure to properly observe and care for Simon," she said. Mr Cartwright was in a 24-hour observation cell, but he was not watched around the clock and officers failed to remove coverings he put on the camera in a timely manner. The office who was supposed to monitor Mr Cartwright failed to conduct regular and adequate physical checks. During one observation on the day Mr Cartwright died, the officer looked in for just four seconds and did not return to the cell for more than five hours. Recommendations Ms Kennedy made several recommendations to Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network, and the Commissioner of Corrective Services. These included a review of procedures for monitoring inmates' food and fluid intake, employing psychologists to provide services to inmates and systematic support for those with personality disorders. Ms Kennedy said Justice Health should also consider the medical transfer of psychiatrically ill patients to external hospitals when there were no beds in a mental health facility. She recommended a formal policy addressing the responsibilities of correctional officers to ensure access to water, when a cell's water can be turned off and measures to ensure access to sufficient water if water supply is turned off. Ms Kennedy said mandatory mental health first aid training should be considered for officers who supervised inmates in observation cells or on risk management, and those officers should be told why those inmates are there. She also recommended a memorandum outlining what physical checks should occur and how often, and how the surveillance camera footage should be checked. A spokesperson for Corrections Minister Anoulack Chanthivong said Corrective Services NSW would release a response to the coroner's recommendations "in due course". The spokesperson said that since Mr Cartwright's death, Corrective Services introduced several changes. These included a specialised observation suite at the remand centre, updated observation policies, a trial of 'proof of life' technology, a review of policies regarding access to water, and investigating extra mental health training for officers. "Corrective Services NSW takes seriously its duty of care to inmates who they are tasked with keeping safe and secure while under supervision," the spokesperson said. The professional standards and investigations unit will consider the coroner's report for evidence of staff misconduct to determine further steps. A Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network spokesperson said staff made contact with Mr Cartwright's family in the days after his death and later met with them. "We are sorry for the distress experienced by Mr Cartwright's family and will carefully consider the Coroner's findings and recommendations before providing a formal response to the Attorney General," the spokesperson said. Had Mr Cartwright not died, Ms Kennedy said his criminal matter might have been dealt with through mental health provisions. He might not have even received a jail sentence.
