Nick Kyrgios has described Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek’s positive doping tests as “disgusting” ahead of his return to tennis. The controversial Australian has played only one match in more than two years because of injury but that has not stopped him being an outspoken presence on social media during a difficult few months for the sport. First it was announced in August that Sinner had failed two doping tests in March but was cleared of fault, while in November Swiatek was handed a one-month ban for a failed test caused by contaminated medication. Feels good getting these consecutive days training in the bank man.... Wrist re construction and back out here... blessed..................Without failing any drug tests 🙂↕️🙏🏽 be proud kygs doing it the right way 😩😂 pic.twitter.com/J8l21lnTdI — Nicholas Kyrgios (@NickKyrgios) December 5, 2024 Kyrgios has been particularly vociferous in his criticism of Sinner, who could yet face a ban after the World Anti-Doping Agency appealed the finding of no fault or negligence in his case. At a press conference ahead of the Brisbane International, Kyrgios told reporters: “I have to be outspoken about it because I don’t think there’s enough people that are speaking about it. I think people are trying to sweep it under the rug. “I just think that it’s been handled horrifically in our sport. Two world number ones both getting done for doping is disgusting for our sport. It’s a horrible look. “The tennis integrity right now – and everyone knows it, but no one wants to speak about it – it’s awful. It’s actually awful. And it’s not OK.” Kyrgios initially underwent knee surgery in January 2023, returning to action in June of that year, but he played only one match before pulling out of Wimbledon due to a torn ligament in his right wrist. He has not played a competitive match since, and it appeared doubtful that he would be able to return, but the 29-year-old will make his comeback in Brisbane this week. Kyrgios will take on France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in singles, while he will also team up with Novak Djokovic in a blockbuster doubles pairing. “It’s good to be back,” said Kyrgios. “I honestly never thought I’d be back playing at this level. Even entering an event like this, preparing, doing all the right things. A post shared by Nick Kyrgios (@k1ngkyrg1os) “I’m really excited to just go out there and play, just play tennis. I saw Novak in the gym, playing doubles with him, a lot to be excited about that I’m able to get out there and compete again.” Asked whether he could get back to the same level that saw him reach the Wimbledon final in 2022, Kyrgios said: “I still believe I can, whether or not that’s factual or not. There was another player who was like, ‘You have to be realistic’. That’s not how I am. I always back my ability.” The new tennis season is already under way, with the United Cup team event beginning on Friday. Great Britain, who are weakened by the absence of Jack Draper through injury, begin their campaign against Argentina in Sydney on Monday before facing hosts Australia on Wednesday. That could pit Katie Boulter against fiance Alex De Minaur, with the pair having announced their engagement last week. A post shared by Katie Boulter (@katiecboulter) “Obviously some incredible news from our side, but I think we kind of wanted it to die down a little bit before matches started,” said Boulter of the timing. “My private life is out in the public a little bit at the moment. But, in terms of the stuff that I’m doing on the court, I’ll be doing the best I can every single day to stay in my own little bubble.” Billy Harris has taken Draper’s place, with the British number one facing a race against time to be fit for the Australian Open because of a hip problem. Emma Raducanu is the sixth seed at the ASB Classic in Auckland and will begin her season with a match against Robin Montgomery, while Cameron Norrie takes on another American, Learner Tien, at the Hong Kong Open.New Delhi: India and Kuwait on Sunday elevated their ties to a strategic partnership aimed at broadening the scope of Kuwaiti investment in the world's fastest-growing major economy, and also signed a deal to enhance defence cooperation on a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with the Gulf state's highest national award. Rams' offense is struggling, but the defense has put LA on the brink of an NFC West title LOS ANGELES (AP) — Right when the Los Angeles Rams' offense has dropped into a disconcerting slump, their defense has held three straight opponents under 10 points for the first time in decades. Greg Beacham, The Associated Press Dec 29, 2024 12:55 PM Dec 29, 2024 1:05 PM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay reacts after a defensive stop during the first half of an NFL football game against the Arizona Cardinals, Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, in Inglewood, Calif. (AP Photo/Ryan Sun) LOS ANGELES (AP) — Right when the Los Angeles Rams' offense has dropped into a disconcerting slump, their defense has held three straight opponents under 10 points for the first time in decades. Although the Rams (10-6) are closing in on an NFC West title and another playoff berth with a five-game winning streak, the way they're doing it makes their postseason prospects quite unpredictable. The methodology has been strange, but the results are not: After holding off Arizona 13-9 on Saturday night, Los Angeles has won nine of 11 and is very close to claiming its fourth division title and sixth playoff berth in coach Sean McVay's eight seasons. “I’m proud of this group and the way they battled back,” Matthew Stafford said. “A lot of people doubted us, and a lot of people wrote us off at 1-4. To be able to sit here with our record what it is right now, I feel proud of this group.” The Rams hadn't held three straight opponents to single-digit scoring since 1975, but rookie coordinator Chris Shula's defense has done it with a strong front and a little luck on the back end, including the last-minute interception by Ahkello Witherspoon on a pass that deflected off star Arizona tight end Trey McBride's head at the goal line. Kyler Murray threw it before McBride was probably ready because Shula had called a zero blitz on first down at the Los Angeles 5. “I want to make more plays to make sure they don’t have to do as much as they did (against Arizona), but I’m proud of them,” Stafford said of the Rams' defense. "It’s awesome to watch where they were in training camp to where they are now. Shula is doing a hell of a job. We all knew he would. Those guys are playing hard for him.” But the Rams have scored more than 21 points just once during their five-game winning streak, their longest since their Super Bowl championship season in 2021. They’ve managed only three touchdowns in their last three games while scoring fewer than 20 points each time out, although that stretch includes games played in the rain (San Francisco) and in subfreezing temperatures (New York Jets). Against the Cardinals in Inglewood's ideal weather, the Rams’ offense still produced one TD, a season-worst 12 first downs and only 257 total yards — 139 fewer than Arizona. The running game struggled again, as it often does when all five starting offensive linemen aren't healthy, while the entire roster aside from Puka Nacua combined for just seven receptions for 60 yards — a surprising number for a McVay offense. “I don’t think there’s one thing I can point to,” McVay said Sunday. “I could go on and on about some of the things, starting with me, but then also about our execution in terms of getting connected in the run game, targeting the right way, making sure that the ball is going where it should go, and guys that I know are capable of playing the way that we’ve seen. If they do that, then I know that it’s not as far as sometimes it can feel like. But ultimately, we’ve got to do it.” What's working The young front four remains the strength of the defense. Jared Verse had a tremendous game on the edge against Murray and Arizona's running game, while fellow rookie Braden Fiske and second-year pros Kobie Turner and Byron Young all recorded sacks. What needs help The Rams again failed to establish the running game despite never trailing Arizona. Kyren Williams got his second-fewest carries of the season (13, with just five in the second half), while rookie Blake Corum was barely involved. Los Angeles' 3.9 yards per rush is the second-lowest mark in the NFL even though Williams began Sunday third in the league with 1,299 yards. Stock up Witherspoon not only made the game-saving interception, but the eight-year veteran who went unsigned until September also has seized the starting cornerback job from Cobie Durant, who didn't play on defense against the Cards despite being healthy again. McVay said Witherspoon's play during Durant's brief injury absence resulted in the change. Stock down Cooper Kupp had one catch against Arizona, and he has just 12 receptions in the past five games, matching the least productive five-game stretch of his eight-year career. Stafford has said the Rams need to get their Super Bowl 56 MVP more involved, and Kupp says he's healthy — yet it isn't happening. Injuries McVay believes the Rams stayed healthy outside of a stinger for rookie safety Kam Kinchens, but they felt the absence of RT Rob Havenstein, who injured his shoulder last week during an unpadded practice. Backup Joe Noteboom committed three holding penalties and got beaten repeatedly. Key number 4 — Stafford's consecutive games without taking a sack. That's the longest streak of his 16-year career, yet he has only one 200-yard passing game in that stretch. Next steps The Rams began Sunday preparing as if they'll play the Seahawks (9-7) next Saturday, although the game could happen a day later. McVay won't show his cards, but if the Rams have clinched, they seem likely to rest several regulars for the playoffs. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFL Greg Beacham, The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? Mandatory Credit: Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images/ File Photo Phoenix Suns stars Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal are expected to return to action Tuesday night when the Phoenix Suns host the Los Angeles Lakers. Both players have been dealing with strained left calf injuries. The Suns listed both players as probable for the game. "Brad and Kevin did everything today," Suns coach Mike Budenholzer said after Monday's light workout. "So they came out of yesterday in a good place. ... We'll kind of wait to see how they feel, but we're expecting that they'll play, we're hopeful that they'll play and I think they're excited to play." Durant has missed the past seven games and Phoenix is 1-6 without him. The Suns are 0-5 since Beal went down. Tuesday will be the Suns' first game since losing 138-122 at home to the New York Knicks on Wednesday to stretch their skid to five games. "I definitely feel a lot better," Beal said Monday. "I'm thankful we had the schedule we had so we had some rest days, Kev and I." Durant, 36, was playing superb before the injury with averages of 27.6 points and 6.6 rebounds. The two-time NBA Finals MVP has made 24 of 56 shots (42.9 percent) from 3-point range. Beal, 31, is averaging 17.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Budenholzer doesn't foresee much problem integrating the two back into the attack. "Those two guys are veterans. It's basketball," Budenholzer said. "They have to go out and play. ... Just lean on their IQ and experience and just get them to go out and compete and play together." --Field Level Media REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you. ’s creator, director and writer, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has broken down the show’s second season, recalling the most Netflix’s hit South Korean thriller — which sees hundreds of cash-strapped individuals compete in deadly children’s games for a life-changing sum of money — returned for its second season on December 26. The new season welcomes back Lee Jung-jae as Player 456 Seong Gi-hun, who infiltrates the contest to try and put and end to it once and for all. After entering the contest again, Gi-hun is faced with a new set of games he must pass in order to survive. One of them includes a six-legged race, where players are brought into an indoor room full of sand. Divided into groups of five, contestants must complete a series of timed challenges while running around a mini track. While waiting their turn, the rest of the teams are seated in the middle cheering each other on. In a new interview with , Hwang and Lee Byung-hun, who plays Hwang In-ho/Front Man, recalled filming the scene. “That was the only game where participants root for each other. I thought [while writing the game], if we can increase the opportunities for people to support and root for each other, society will get better,” Hwang said. Lee remembered the scene being “the most fun, but also the most exhausting.” “Every time one group did a run around, [the set] was completely filled with dust, and it was hard to breathe,” he said, with Hwang adding: “Everyone got really sick. As soon as I said ‘Cut,’ everyone started coughing, including me. It took more than two weeks to shoot the scene.” While viewers have been and its , they were left divided over the action-packed finale, which ended with a cliffhanger . , Hwang told : “Of course, those watching would feel like, ‘Oh, no. What’s going to happen next? Give us the next episode right now.’ “But I think that because, at that moment, Gi-hun loses everything, he fails all of his attempts [to stop the games], that is when he goes through yet another character transition. So I thought that was the best place to end the season “
Will Utah State or Boise State forfeit vs. San Jose State in the Mountain West semifinals?Christmas is less than one month away and silly, sneaky little elves are starting to appear in children's home. A holiday tradition for many families around the world, it is indeed Elf on the Shelf time. Nearly 20 years old, Elf on the Shelf has gained traction in recent years as parents post extreme displays on social media − from elves getting stuck in the kitchen blender to making a mess in the bathroom with shaving cream . If you're looking to explore the Christmas tradition for the first time, here's everything you need to know about Elf on the Shelf. Need something to watch? 100+ Kids Christmas movies to stream with the whole family this holiday season What's the story behind Elf on the Shelf? As told in the children's book, "The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition," 10-inch-tall elves, called Scout Elves, arrive in children's homes ahead of Christmas. Scout Elves are on a mission to relay children's behavior back to Santa Claus for his naughty and nice list. Every night, the elves travel back to the North Pole and then in the morning, upon their return, land in a different spot than the nights before. Toward the end of November each year is Scout Elf Return Week − when elves arrive to children's homes. This year's return week is Nov. 24 through Dec. 1. However, Scout Elves may return a bit early, but only with Santa's permission . Who invented Elf on the Shelf and when did it get started? Elf on the Shelf was invented by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell. The mother-daughter duo self-published "The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition" in 2005. The original book comes with an elf doll, available in several diverse options. Elf on the Shelf gained widespread attention in 2007 when actress Jennifer Garner was spotted carrying the book kit, according to The Lumistella Company , which owns Elf on the Shelf. Shortly after, the book was discussed on NBC's "Today" show. In 2012, the elf got off the shelf and made his first balloon appearance in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade . But perhaps the leading reason why Elf on the Shelf got so popular is thanks to social media, with parents sharing their elaborate and humorous schemes online. Today, The Lumistella Company offers various Elf on the Shelf merchandise. Several animated movies, including Netflix's "The Elf on the Shelf: An Elf's Story," have been inspired by the story of Scout Elves. How does Elf on the Shelf work? Of course, like any holiday tradition, families may put their own spin on Elf on the Shelf, but here are the encouraged steps: There are a few rules worth learning, too: Where can you buy Elf on the Shelf? Taoiseach Simon Harris has insisted he is not aware that any member of his team tried to get RTE to take down a viral social media clip of a much-criticised encounter with a disability care worker. The Fine Gael leader was asked about the controversy in the first question posed during the second and final TV leaders’ debate of Ireland’s General Election campaign. Mr Harris apologised over the weekend for his handling of the discussion with Charlotte Fallon while canvassing in Kanturk in Co Cork on Friday evening. Tanaiste and Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin, Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald and Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris with presenters Miriam O’Callaghan and Sarah McInerney during the final TV leaders’ debate at RTE studios in Donnybrook, Dublin (Niall Carson/PA) Mr Harris rang Ms Fallon on Saturday and said he unreservedly apologised for the way he treated her, however focus has since shifted to Fine Gael’s interactions with the national broadcaster about the social media video. At the outset of Tuesday’s TV debate, co-host Miriam O’Callaghan directly asked the Fine Gael leader whether a member of his party contacted RTE to ask for the clip to be taken down. “I have no knowledge of that whatsoever, because this clip was entirely appropriate,” said Mr Harris. “It was a very important moment on the campaign. “And RTE and indeed many media outlets have been with me throughout the campaign, covering many interactions that I’ve had with many, many people right across this country.” The Taoiseach said the approach by his team member was part of the “normal contact that happens between party politics and broadcasters on a daily basis”. Mr Harris’s partner-in-government in the last coalition, Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin, said he was not aware of the approach to RTE by Fine Gael. Tanaiste and Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin during the final TV leaders’ debate at RTE studios (Niall Carson/PA) “I think Simon has given his explanation to it. I’m not sure it’s as normal or as usual. I just get on with it every day. But, again, I think, you know, I’m not au fait with the details behind all of this, or the background to it. “The video didn’t come down, and it was seen by many, many people. “And I think it illustrates that out there, there are a lot of people suffering in our society. “Notwithstanding the progress we’ve made as a country, a lot of people are facing a lot of individual challenges, and our job as public representatives and as leaders in travelling the country is to listen to people, hear their cases, to understand the challenges that they are going through in their lives. “And when we go about in election campaigns, we have to open up ourselves to criticism and to people calling us to account.” Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald had earlier in the day described reports of the Fine Gael approach to RTE as “chilling”. Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald and Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris during the final TV leaders’ debate (Niall Carson/PA) Mr Harris previously branded the proposal a “dog whistle to conspiracy theorists” while Mr Martin said it was a “dangerous departure”. Ms McDonald defended the idea during the RTE Prime Time debate on Tuesday. “Politics and politicians should not try to influence editorial decisions or try and have clips taken down because they are inconvenient to them,” she said. “There has to be distance, there has to be objectivity. But I would say I am struck by the very defensive reaction from some to this (the review proposal). “The BBC, for example, a peer review looked at their coverage on migration. Politicians didn’t put their hands on it, and rightly so. “I think in a world where we have to rely on quality information, especially from the national broadcaster, which is in receipt of very substantial public funding, that has to be the gold standard of reliability. I think peer reviews like that are healthy.”

Any movement on the issue appears unlikely as Republicans prepare to take control of the Senate in January, underscoring the hurdles in imposing restrictions on a separate branch of government even as public confidence in the court has fallen to record lows. The 93-page report released Saturday by the Democratic majority of the Senate Judiciary Committee found additional travel taken in 2021 by Thomas but not reported on his annual financial disclosure form: a private jet flight to New York's Adirondacks in July and jet and yacht trip to New York City sponsored by billionaire Harlan Crow in October, one of more than two dozen times detailed in the report that Thomas took luxury travel and gifts from wealthy benefactors. The court adopted its first code of ethics in 2023, but it leaves compliance to each of the nine justices. "The highest court in the land can't have the lowest ethical standards," the committee chairman, Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, said in a statement. He has long called for an enforceable code of ethics. Republicans protested the subpoenas authorized for Crow and others as part of the investigation. No Republicans signed on to the final report, and no formal report from them was expected. A spokesman for Crow said he voluntarily agreed to provide information for the investigation, which did not pinpoint any specific instances of undue influence. Crow said in a statement that Thomas and his wife Ginni had been unfairly maligned. "They are good and honorable people and no one should be treated this way," he said. Attorney Mark Paoletta, a longtime friend of Thomas who has been tapped for the incoming Trump administration, said the report was aimed at conservatives whose rulings Democrats disagreed with. "This entire investigation was never about 'ethics' but about trying to undermine the Supreme Court," Paoletta said in a statement posted on X. The court did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Thomas has said he was not required to disclose the trips that he and his wife took with Crow because the big donor is a close friend of the family and disclosure of that type of travel was not previously required. The new ethics code does explicitly require it, and Thomas has since gone back and reported some travel. The report traces back to Justice Antonin Scalia, saying he "established the practice" of accepting undisclosed gifts and hundreds of trips over his decades on the bench. The late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and retired Justice Stephen Breyer also took subsided trips but disclosed them on their annual forms, it said. The investigation found that Thomas has accepted gifts and travel from wealthy benefactors worth more than $4.75 million by some estimates since his 1991 confirmation and failed to disclose much of it. "The number, value, and extravagance of the gifts accepted by Justice Thomas have no comparison in modern American history," according to the report. It also detailed a 2008 luxury trip to Alaska taken by Justice Samuel Alito. He has said he was exempted from disclosing the trip under previous ethical rules. Alito also declined calls to withdraw from cases involving Donald Trump or the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol after flags associated with the riot were seen flying at two of Alito's homes. Alito has said the flags were raised by this wife. Thomas has ignored calls to step aside from cases involving Trump, too. Ginni Thomas supported Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election that the Republican lost to Democrat Joe Biden. The report also pointed to scrutiny of Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who, aided by her staff, has advanced sales of her books through college visits over the past decade. Justices have also heard cases involving their book publishers, or involving companies in which justices owned stock. Biden has been the most prominent Democrat calling for a binding code of conduct. Justice Elena Kagan has publicly backed adopting an enforcement mechanism, though some ethics experts have said it could be legally tricky. Justice Neil Gorsuch recently cited the code when he recused himself from an environmental case. He had been facing calls to step aside because the outcome could stand to benefit a Colorado billionaire whom Gorsuch represented before becoming a judge. The report also calls for changes in the Judicial Conference, the federal courts' oversight body led by Chief Justice John Roberts, and further investigation by Congress.
Home for the holidays? Show relatives you care with some tech supportWhile some people associate winter with coziness and cheer, the colder months don't feel quite as festive for everyone. For some, the darker days and colder weather can serve as a trigger for seasonal affective disorder (SAD). You may have heard of SAD also referred to as "seasonal depression," typically setting in during the fall and winter months — times when your circadian rhythm is thrown off by the dreary weather. Symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder Much like general depression, SAD can impact everyone differently. That said, it's most often characterized by symptoms like: Seasonal Affective Disorder Treatments If you notice the seasonal shift taking a toll on your mental health, there are some ways to alleviate symptoms. This exceptional year not only reflected the confidence of issuers but also highlighted investors' eagerness to seize listing-day gains or back companies with strong long-term growth potential. The year was marked by Hyundai Motor India's historic IPO, the largest in the country's history, which raised Rs 27,870 crore. Companies of varying market capitalisations -- large, mid, and small -- tapped into the IPO route in 2024, with the average issue size rising significantly from Rs 867 crore in 2023 to over Rs 1,700 crore in 2024. The exceptional vibrancy of the IPO market was evident, with December alone seeing at least 15 launches. "Rising retail participation, strong domestic inflows and active participation by FPIs (even though they have been net sellers in the secondary market), private capex increase and the government's strategic focus on infrastructure and key sectors have collectively laid a strong foundation for the fundraising momentum in India," V Prashant Rao, Director & Head - ECM, Investment Banking at Anand Rathi Advisors, said. Fundraising momentum is expected to accelerate further in the New Year, potentially surpassing 2024's record figures, market analysts said. "Based on the 75 IPO documents, which are at various stages of approval/ marketing and the deal pipelines, we expect issuance activity in 2025 to cross Rs 2.5 lakh crore," Munish Aggarwal, Managing Director and Head of Equity Capital Markets at Equirus, said. The IPO pipeline for the next year is set to feature major offerings, including HDB Financial Services' proposed Rs 12,500 crore issue, LG Electronics India's Rs 15,000 crore public float, and Hexaware Technologies' Rs 9,950 crore offering. According to data available with the exchanges, 90 maiden public issues were launched in 2024, collectively raising Rs 1.6 lakh crore. This includes eight IPOs scheduled to conclude on December 23-24. Besides, the Rs 500-crore IPO of Unimech Aerospace and Manufacturing is slated to open on Dec 23.
