LAS VEGAS (AP) — Max Verstappen returned to the Las Vegas Grand Prix as the defending winner of the Sin City spectacle and a fourth consecutive Formula 1 championship well within his reach. The Dutchman needed only to finish Saturday night’s race ahead of Lando Norris of McLaren to make it four straight for the Red Bull driver. Verstappen starts fifth and Norris is sixth. Norris can additionally lose the title if he fails to outscore Verstappen by three points on the neon-lit street circuit that zips down the famed Las Vegas Strip. The race is back for a second year and again promoted by Liberty Media, the commercial rights holder of F1. The debut event was a bit of a disaster in that locals were livid for months over ongoing construction, as well as traffic detours and delays, the inability to access many local businesses, outrageous price gouging by the tourism industry as well as LVGP ticketing, and then a loose valve cover that nearly destroyed Carlos Sainz Jr.’s Ferrari minutes into the first practice. It caused an hours-long delay for repairs, fans were kicked out of the circuit, and F1 ran practice until 4 a.m. — when it legally had to reopen the streets to the public. This year has been far less hectic, in part because all of the infrastructure headaches were a year ago, but also that last year’s race was spectacular. Despite all its speed bumps, the actual running of the race was one of the best of the F1 season and could produce a similar show Saturday night. George Russell of Mercedes starts from the pole ahead of Sainz, who wants redemption after the valve-cover fiasco last year. He had to serve a penalty because his car was damaged in the incident. Ferrari is expected to be the class of the field, which could tighten the nail-biting constructer championship battle. Red Bull, the two-time reigning winners, have fallen to third in the standings behind McLaren and Ferrari. But with Las Vegas the first of the final three races of the season, McLaren is clinging to a 36-point lead for a championship worth an estimated $150 million in prize money. McLaren last won the constructor title in 1998, while Ferrari last won it in 2008. The race is the final stop in the United States for F1, which has exploded in American popularity the last five years. The trio of races in Miami; Austin, Texas; and Las Vegas are more than any other country. After the race completion, F1 next week is expected to announce it will expand the grid to 11 teams to make room for an American team backed by General Motors’ Cadillac brand. The team was initially started by Michael Andretti, who could not receive approval from F1 on his expansion application. Andretti has since turned over his ownership stake to Indiana-businessman Dan Towriss and Mark Walter, the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. They would run the Cadillac F1 team that would likely join the grid in 2026. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. The announcement of the American team did not come during the weekend to not derail from the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which is the showpiece of the Liberty Media portfolio. With one-time infrastructure costs last year, the debut event was believed to cost Liberty nearly $1 billion. Expenses are down this year, but Liberty put in as much glitz and glamour as possible, anyway. There are nightclubs around the course and on top of the paddock, an ice-skating rink, top-level musical acts and a 10 p.m. local start to make it feel like a true Las Vegas big Saturday night event. ___ AP auto racing: https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing Advertisement Advertisement
St. John's 58, Stony Brook 34Preview: Sunderland vs. West Bromwich Albion - prediction, team news, lineupsAdele [Source: AP Photo] Adele has opened up about how her two-year Las Vegas residency got off to a “rocky” start. The Chasing Pavements singer, 36, mounted the gigs after a traumatic time in 2022 which saw her cancel the shows less than a day before the first one was set to kick off – and wrapped them up on Saturday night with an emotional performance at Caesars Palace that saw her kiss her 12-year-old son Angelo and fiancée Rich Paul, 43, after making a speech to fans about her battle to put them on. She told the crowd in a video shared on social media: “I am so sad that this residency is over and I am so glad that it happened – I really, really am. “It got off to such a f****** rocky, rocky way. It was one of the worst years of my life. “I was being punched around, it was horrible and I was told it was career suicide and Vegas would never forgive me for (cancelling) so last minute.” Ahead of her last show on Saturday, Adele told how she was looking forward to enjoying red wine and resting in bed. She told fans at one of her recent shows in Sin City, she said: “Doing four hours a weekend of completely live singing is a lot. “And I chat a lot, and I’m very, very sensitive and I’m emotional. I am battered after these shows. And I take every single person on in this room into my soul, I take you home with me. She added she’s been on “full recovery” between shows and was ready for them to be over. Adele went on: “It’s a big deal to me because it’s very, very bittersweet. But (my residency) has been in my mind for four years... four years for one f****** idea. “So I’m looking forward to having loads of spare time to love on my kids, to love on my man and to love on another kid. To love on my house. “Saturday night (when the residency ends), I’m probably going to have a (lot) of red wine. “So that’s the most exciting thing for when the show ends! Then after that I think I’m just going to really, really veg until the end of the year. I feel like I’m early hibernating already.”

Read our privacy policy A "great migration" is under way from Elon Musk's X. After an election in which the world's richest person helped propel a convicted criminal into the White House, around 115,000 US users reportedly deleted their accounts from the platform formerly known as Twitter on Wednesday alone. Stephen King and Don Lemon have both vowed to quit, as has The Guardian . Meanwhile, rival services such as Bluesky, Threads, and Mastodon are all rapidly surging. But which one is the most worthy contender for Twitter's old crown? And which one is actually right for you, if you're one of those people making the jump? I've been a Twitter/X user – okay, fine, an addict – for 13 years. Although I'm not personally planning to stop posting there, I am trying to diversify my diet, and frankly it's all very confusing. So if you're in a similar boat, here's a quick and dirty guide to your three major options – alongside some personal impressions from a lifelong internet user whom God has cursed (or blessed) to be forever learning. Bluesky: 'Theater kid energy' Bluesky is perhaps the clearest spiritual successor to X. It was set up by longtime Twitter boss and co-founder Jack Dorsey in 2021 to fix, and perhaps atone for, the "original sin" of his previous company (though he's since washed his hands of Bluesky too). On the surface, it looks and operates pretty much like Twitter used to. Dig into the options, though, and you'll find some thoughtful special functions. You can adopt custom timeline filters and algorithms created by other users, or block yourself from posting images until you add a description for people who use screen reader software. Supermarket giant Woolworths has asked the Fair Work Commission for a circuit-breaker to ban warehouse workers from blocking their distribution centres. United Workers Union members are blocking all entrances to a distribution centre in suburban Melbourne and three other sites over better conditions and pay. Plans to bring in staff on Monday never eventuated, but picketers at the Dandenong South site turned away logistics trucks trying to enter. Woolworths Group has filed an urgent application with the Fair Work Commission on Tuesday. “The application comes after the UWU refused to give any assurance of safe passage for team members seeking to return to work at our Melbourne South Regional Distribution Centre (MSRDC) yesterday and this morning,” Woolworths said in a statement on Tuesday morning. The application to Fair Work alleges a breach of the Good Faith Bargaining requirements in the Fair Work Act. The matter has not yet been listed for hearing. Woolworth says the majority of staff at the Dandenong South site are not members of the union, and want to return to work and get paid. The supermarket giant confirmed it would again try to reopen the distribution centre again today but would follow advice from Victoria Police on whether it was safe to do so. The strike action has seen supermarket shelves across Victoria stripped, with scenes akin to the COVID-19 pandemic. One store, on Collingwood’s Smith Street, had most of its toilet paper aisle emptied along with large portions of its bread and fridge sections. Those ordering grocery deliveries are also warned to allow substitutions to ensure they receive the products they want. The decision to go to Fair Work follows the company and union returning to the negotiating table on Monday. “We are hopeful of a breakthrough because our workers deserve to be safe at work,” United Workers Union National Secretary Tim Kennedy said. Workers are protesting against “unrealistic performance expectations” which they claim lead to frequent injuries, demanding better wages, and an agreement that workers at different sites are paid the same amount. In late November, Woolworths insisted all stores were still receiving regular stock deliveries, but some were getting their goods less frequently than previously scheduled. No product limits were in place at the time apart from eggs, which have been rationed for months following bird flu outbreaks in NSW and Victoria. It’s believed the strike is yet to affect Victorian farmers, whose produce normally hits supermarket closer to Christmas – but items such as nappies, toilet paper and drinks have been affected.

Major League Baseball , the players’ association and the Braves paid tribute to Carty on social media on Sunday. A family friend told Listín Diario — a newspaper in Carty’s native Dominican Republic — that he died Saturday night in an Atlanta hospital. “Carty was one of the first groundbreaking Latino stars in the major leagues, and he established himself as a hero to millions in his native Dominican Republic, his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, and the city of Atlanta, where he was a beloved fan favorite,” the players' association said in its statement . The Braves said Carty left an indelible mark on the organization. “While his on-field accomplishments will never be forgotten, his unforgettable smile and generous nature will be sorely missed,” the team said in its statement. Carty made his big league debut with the Braves in September 1963. He batted .330 with 22 homers and 88 RBIs in his first full season in 1964, finishing second to Dick Allen in voting for NL Rookie of the Year. The Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta after the 1965 season, and Carty got the franchise's first hit in its new home on April 12, 1966, against Pittsburgh. Carty had his best year in 1970, batting .366 with 25 homers and a career-best 101 RBIs. He started the All-Star Game after he was elected as a write-in candidate, joining Willie Mays and Hank Aaron in the NL outfield. Carty batted .299 with 204 homers and 890 RBIs over 15 years in the majors, also playing for Cleveland, Toronto, Oakland, Texas and the Chicago Cubs. He retired after the 1979 season. ___ AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? Have a story/tip? Beyonce, Jay-Z spark divorce speculations amid recent allegations Jay-Z and Beyonce’s marriage seems unsteady as the rapper’s accusations come to the surface Beyonce and Jay-Z’s marriage seems to be standing on shaky grounds as rumours circulate all over social media. Queen Bey and the recently accused rapper are in possession of assets worth $2.6 billion together but this valuable union is apparently on the brink of collapse. Recent allegations including rape and involvement in Diddy’s ‘freak off’ parties have further fueled the flames of divorce speculations. As per a RadarOnline.com report, the 55-year-old rapper has been accused of engagement in heinous crimes at an afterparty of the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000. The rapper has strictly denied the accusations, dubbing them “heinous” and voicing his concerns regarding deep affliction these allegations have caused his family. The Renegade singer added that the situation has caused "another loss of innocence" for their children, including 12-year-old Blue Ivy and 7-year-old twins, Rumi and Sir. However, amid these accusations, the Diva songstress has publicly expressed her support of her husband. The couple presented a united front at the Los Angeles premiere of Mufasa: The Lion King , accompanied by Beyoncé's mother, Tina Knowles, and their eldest daughter, Blue Ivy. Despite appearing to support her husband, the outlet reported that sources claim that the public support was an attempt at damage control during the rising controversies. An insider revealed, "Beyoncé has friends saying she should not only distance herself from Jay but leave him altogether." Queen Bey’s husband also appeared to show subtle support for her as he attended her NFL show at Christmas, but he was not captured in the Netflix livestream of the show.
