At a time when the Congress party, led by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, is spearheading an aggressive campaign over the BJP's "deep ties" with industrialist Gautam Adani, the saffron camp launched a counteroffensive on Sunday by posting a series of posts on X, highlighting a "connection" between the Congress and billionaire investor George Soros. With the Congress seeking to brand the BJP as a party entrenched in oligarchy, the BJP hit back by taking a more nationalistic route in its bid to tarnish the image of the Gandhi clan. With the battle lines drawn, a mayhem is expected in both Houses of Parliament on Monday. Notwithstanding the US denial of the BJP's allegation that elements in the American "deep state" are behind attempts to destabilise India, party MP Nishikant Dubey maintained that he will ask the Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition 10 questions in the House on the issue on Monday when Parliament reconvenes. Mr Dubey reiterated his charge that the media portal Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and Mr Soros have “colluded” with the Opposition party to ruin India's economy and defame the Modi government. The BJP had cited an investigative report by French media agency on US state department funding to the OCCRP and its link with Mr Soros. Reacting to the US embassy's statement, Mr Dubey posted on X, "Yesterday I read the statement of the US embassy officials again and again. They admitted that the US government funds OCCRP and Mr Soros' foundation also funds it... The job of OCCRP and Mr Soros is to ruin India's economy and defame the Modi government in connivance with Opposition leaders.” "After yesterday's statement, I will have to ask Mr Gandhi my 10 questions in the Lok Sabha. The Opposition is trying to suppress my voice in Parliament. Lok Sabha Rule 357 gives me the right to ask questions. Waiting for tomorrow," the MP said. Hardening its stance on the Congress over the issue, the BJP hit out at the Opposition party and its leadership through several posts on X. “Sonia Gandhi, as the co-president of the FDL-AP Foundation, is linked to an organisation financed by Mr Soros' foundation. Notably, the FDL-AP Foundation has expressed their views that treat Kashmir as a separate entity... This association between Mrs Gandhi and an organisation that has backed the idea of Kashmir as an independent nation expresses the influence of foreign entities on India’s internal affairs and the political impact of such connections,” the BJP posted on its official handle on X. The party further claimed that Mrs Gandhi’s chairpersonship of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation led to a partnership with Mr Soros' foundation, “displaying the influence of foreign funding on Indian organisations”. The BJP also posted a screenshot of donors to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, which mentions Mr Soros-linked Open Society Institute, now known as the Open Society (OSF). The party also highlighted how Mr Gandhi’s recent press conference on the Adani issue was aired live by “Mr Soros funded OCCRP,” which Mr Gandhi used as a source to criticise Mr Adani. “It shows nothing but their strong and dangerous relationship and highlights their attempt to derail the Indian economy...Mr Soros and Mr Gandhi have same sentiments regarding the ‘Adani issue’,” posted the BJP. Citing Mr Gandhi's use of OCCRP reports to attack the Adani Group, the BJP has been gunning at the Lok Sabha LoP for having links with Mr Soros, a known critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. OCCRP, headquartered in Amsterdam, is a media platform that largely focuses on stories relating to crime and corruption. Slamming the BJP over its charge against the US state department and elements in the American "deep state," Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor posted, “It's clear the BJP neither understands democracy nor diplomacy. They are so blinded by petty politics that they forget the value of a free press and vibrant independent civil society organisations in a democracy, and they are oblivious to a ruling party's responsibilities in maintaining good relations with key foreign countries...This attack-dog behaviour is an embarrassment to India." Hitting back, the BJP posted an old tweet of Mr Tharoor about his meeting with “old friend Mr Soros.” “Mr Tharoor has publicly acknowledged Mr Soros as an old friend. It's something truly noteworthy,” the BJP posted.Topa, Stewart, McKenzie, Sulser reach deals ahead of tender deadline
'People got to be safe:' Manitoba premier responds to fatal police shootingIt has taken new Michigan coach Dusty May just nine games to guide the Wolverines into the Top 25. May and the Wolverines enter the poll at No. 14 and strive to continue their strong start when they face Arkansas in the Jimmy V Classic on Tuesday night in New York. Michigan (8-1) has reeled off seven straight wins to crack the rankings for the first time in nearly 25 months. "All this stuff doesn't matter to me," May said of the rankings. "It does change the complexion of what we think about and things like that. Overall, I like where we are. We have guys who work well together and they put in the time." The Wolverines look to remain hot against the Razorbacks (7-2). John Calipari's first Arkansas squad has won its past two games. Calipari spent the previous 15 seasons as coach of Kentucky and claims he's excited to be in Arkansas. "I'm not bitter about anything. I'm not," Calipari said. "This is the first page of the first chapter of a new book. The timing for me and my career and my life, this is perfect. And I appreciate the fans and everybody giving me the opportunity to do that." The Razorbacks will be searching for their initial milestone victory under Calipari during their first visit to Madison Square Garden since 1997. Their losses this season are to then-No. 8 Baylor and Illinois on neutral courts. Calipari grabbed several players out of the transfer portal in the offseason, including guard Johnell Davis, one of the stars of the Florida Atlantic team that reached the 2023 Final Four. That squad was coached by May. One of the other Florida Atlantic starters was center Vladislav Goldin, who followed May to Michigan after the coach was hired in the offseason. Goldin has strung together three straight solid games, including a season-best 24 points in a 67-64 road win over then-No. 11 Wisconsin on Dec. 3. He followed that up with 20 points and a season-high 11 rebounds in Saturday's 85-83 home win over Iowa. "He's just been a guy that you can see when he's really locked in and focused there's a different level of play," said May, "and I think now he's finding that level of play." Goldin is part of a balanced attack. Roddy Gayle Jr. averages a team-best 12.2 points per game, followed by Tre Donaldson and Danny Wolf at 12.1 and Goldin at 12.0. Wolf averages a team-best 10 rebounds per game. Arkansas is coming off a 75-60 home victory over UTSA on Saturday. Adou Thiero excelled by matching his career high of 26 points to go with 10 rebounds. Thiero scored 17 points in the second half when the Razorbacks overcame a five-point halftime deficit to outscore the Roadrunners by 20. "We've been seeing that the whole summer," Arkansas forward Trevon Brazile said of Thiero's strong play. "Him dominating. Dominating in practice and (Calipari) pushing him. This is just a reflection of the work he's done this summer and him trusting the coaches." Thiero leads the Razorbacks with averages of 18.6 points and 6.1 rebounds. Boogie Fland is averaging 15 points and Zvonimir Ivisic is scoring 12 per game. Davis (9.3) started slow with just two double-digit outings in the first seven games before averaging 12.5 over the last two games. Michigan holds a 4-3 edge in the all-time series. The Wolverines recorded an 80-67 home victory on Dec. 8, 2012 in the most recent meeting. --Field Level Media
Soren’s aced the politics, it is governance he needs to improve Will Hemant Soren turn out to be a cat with nine political lives? Jharkhand has returned him to office, a rare CM on bail. Soren’s had a tumultuous stint since his 2019 win – among the first CMs to get private sector help to fly back his state’s migrants to Ranchi, using Twitter to have three-way conversations with migrant groups and destination-state CMs. By Sep 2022, he was forced into a waiting game over EC’s opinion on Soren’s “disqualifi cation” in connection with an office-of-profit case. By Jan 2024, he was in ED custody, arrested in a PMLA case. Soren’s a nonconformist CM and won again on the strength of his party’s politics, and a state tradition of resistance. Jharkhand’s CMship has always been torrid – since 2000, seven politicians have served as CM 13 times, and there’ve been three central rule periods. Soren must use some of his political savvy and administrative calibre to improve people’s lives. Jharkhand still has 30% of its population multidimensionally poor. It has among the country’s worst electricity crises despite it being home to over 140 coal mines and seven thermal plants – almost all power is sent outside the state. Its per capita income, among India’s lowest, is almost 300% less than Goa’s, the richest on per capita income. The problem with Jharkhand, and to a lesser extent twin state Chhattisgarh, is that the very issues that crippled the state at inception endure – progress is painfully slow as much on education and health as in jobs, or income generation. Smaller states were carved out ostensibly to better manage their governance. But that’s been proved otherwise. Jharkhand’s miners – 7.5L formally employed and 30L informal workers – are trapped in their work with no improvement in circumstance. Companies are rich, netas are rich, the people and the govt poor. The two tribal land laws that protect Chotanagpur and Santhal Pargana regions ensure no land transfer. But protection of tribal autonomy cannot mean a state failing the people. For, tribals do not even have the money for input costs of farming their land. Surely, schemes to support agriculture by tribals are a no-brainer. Cooperatives among tribal communities have been mooted for self-sufficiency. The Supreme Court has said legislative power to tax mineral rights vests with the states, that royalty paid on minerals was not a tax. But, question is, will the state spend funds thus generated on its people?Trump convinced Republicans to overlook his misconduct. Peppers, who last appeared in late September for the Patriots’ Week 4 game against the 49ers, was arrested Oct. 5 and charged with domestic assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, and possession of a Class B substance. Peppers pleaded not guilty to all charges. His jury trial was scheduled last week to begin Jan. 22. His lawyer, Marc Brofsky, declined to comment Monday afternoon. Peppers is accused of choking a woman and pushing her head against a wall in his apartment before forcing her from his apartment, according to police records . Police also found a small bag of white powder in his wallet; Peppers allegedly admitted it was cocaine and tested positive for the drug. Previously, Brofsky has indicated that there is video evidence that “completely contradicts the alleged victim’s story.” “I expect my client to be fully exonerated,” he told a Boston 25 News reporter after a hearing last month. Peppers was placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt list three days after his arrest, which is a temporary designation that restricts players from attending practice or competing in weekly games. While on the list, players are still paid. Peppers was removed from the list Monday, the NFL announced. The Patriots are set to play the Colts in Foxborough Sunday which could be Peppers’ return to the field. “In accordance with the Personal Conduct Policy, the league initiated a preliminary investigation into an incident from early October,” the announcement said, according to multiple reports . “That review will remain ongoing and is not affected by this change in Peppers’ roster status.” A civil suit was filed against Peppers in Norfolk Superior Court last week. Representation for the NFL player and the alleged victim, who is not identified in court filings, are discussing a potential settlement, according to her lawyer. Wigdor LLP, who said on X they represent the woman, released a statement following what they called false claims about her motives from Brofsky. According to MassLive , Brofsky said the alleged victim “demand(ed) $10.5 million to settle this case, or else she would file a civil suit.” He added that “while it’s technically not extortion... it tells the court what this case is about.” “As Mr. Peppers’ lawyer has raised this, we can confirm that Mr. Peppers’ lawyer asked us to meet to discuss a potential settlement and asked us to convey a settlement proposal,” Wigdor wrote in a statement . “We did not present a proposal of $10.5 million to avoid a civil lawsuit and the civil lawsuit does not seek any particular amount other than what a jury decides to award.” Molly Farrar Molly Farrar is a general assignment reporter for Boston.com, focusing on education, politics, crime, and more. Boston Scientific EVP Arthur Butcher sells $1.25 million in stockAn Italian renewable energy giant and Japan's largest oil and gas company are plugging into Australia's clean energy resources under the banner of a new company. Potentia Energy will be launched at the Sydney Opera House on Monday as an Australian renewable energy firm co-owned by Rome-headquartered Enel Green Power and INPEX. With rights in place for a development pipeline of over seven gigawatts across the country, Potentia is most focused on developing and acquiring assets in NSW, Queensland and Western Australia, chief executive Werther Esposito told AAP. The company is not deterred by the risk of political change, with opinion polls favouring the coalition ahead of the 2025 federal election. "The energy transition will go ahead in any case. There could be an acceleration or slowing down in the process," Mr Esposito said. "Renewables represent, from a technical and economic perspective, the solution for climate change," he said. "I don't think any government could deny that today wind and solar are cheaper than other technologies, and are faster in reaching the phase of deployment and construction and then supply of renewable energy." NSW had suffered some planning delays that had hit investment but there had been a "strong improvement" in the past 12 to 18 months, he said. The company also has a stake in Queensland, particularly in the north's Copperstring area, where the recently elected LNP government has pledged to stick by a massive transmission project begun under Labor. Enel won the bidding in 2024 to develop renewable energy to power a vanadium mining and processing project, which is one of a number of giant resources projects intended to be connected to the $9 billion Copperstring transmission line from Townsville to Mt Isa. WA offered a "huge opportunity" for the deployment of wind farms and battery energy storage systems, Mr Esposito said. With a decades-long footprint in Australia's north and west, INPEX is Japan's largest fossil fuel exploration and production company. Under pressure to reduce its global contribution to climate change, INPEX is already developing the production of liquid hydrogen and ammonia. "They elected Australia as the market to start diversification of the energy mix and huge investment in renewables," Mr Esposito said. "Of course in this regard, Australia is the place to be," he said. Enel and INPEX joined forces in a share purchase agreement in 2023, with the renewables business operating plants comprising 310 megawatts of solar capacity across South Australia and Victoria and a 75MW wind farm in Western Australia. A 93MW solar farm is under commissioning in Victoria and financial close was recently announced for a hybrid 98MW solar and 20MW battery project in NSW. But with international firms lining up to exploit clean energy resources, Australians living alongside projects are demanding a share of future profits through community funds, power bill rebates and other benefits. "The energy transition should be just. To be just it means that you need to support the communities and involve the communities in a proper way," Mr Esposito said. He said Enel was proud of its legacy in providing support to areas facing a changing landscape and the impact of new infrastructure, including community funds, a focus on local hiring and providing training to support new jobs. "It's an approach that is, for us, absolutely a pillar of our strategy," he said. "We are still facing some regulatory ambiguity in what a social licence means, and we are trying to be a leader in the industry in helping and supporting all the key stakeholders in determining and defining what it is."
Nvidia's stock dips after China opens probe of the AI chip company for violating anti-monopoly laws
A video is going viral on social media which shows a woman, seemingly dead in a coffin, coming back from the dead. The video was shared over a million times on social media, with users expressing shock at the way the woman supposedly suddenly becomes alive in the coffin. However, behind-the-scene footage of the video shared later on social media shows that the woman did not actually come back from the dead. After the original video went viral on social media, a video was released seemingly showing how the entire event transpired. It showed that the scene was staged and in the BTS video, the woman can be seen lying in the coffin and getting ready for the video. Here's the original viral video: Here's the BTS video shared later: The video has been described as creepy because of the way in which the woman suddenly opens her eyes, shocking the viewer invested in the narrative. Some people initially suspected that it was a case of a dead body's eyes opening suddenly due to a loss of muscle caused after death. Usually, embalmers, stitches or glue is used to sew or paste the eyes so that they don't open up and create an uncanny situation for mourners. However, that was not the case, as the later video revealed that the video was staged and created in such a way that the viral element, coming from the shock value, is emphasized. After knowing the truth, social media hit out at the video for its allegedly misleading character. "Sounds like a classic case of internet drama spinning tales...," one user wrote. "Always question the source and look for context." "They probably think we stupid 😭 that bitch not dead," wrote another. "Viral doesn’t equal truth. Too many are fooled by the spectacle. Let’s focus on what’s real, not what’s trending," said another. "Looks like the internet loves a good mystery, But the truth behind the scenes is always more intriguing," said one.''' Rare cases of people coming back to life after being declared dead, known as the "Lazarus phenomenon," include: Janina Kolkiewicz, 91, who awoke 11 hours after being declared dead, craving tea and pancakes; a 66-year-old revived 10 minutes post-resuscitation during surgery; and a 78-year-old Mississippi man who woke up in a morgue body bag the next day.
