The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) expects its Smart Park Industrial Estate and Map Ta Phut deep-sea port in Rayong to play a key role in drawing new investment and facilitating businesses, helping to drive the Thai economy. The construction of Smart Park, which spans 1,383 rai of land in Map Ta Phut in Rayong, is now complete, prepared to serve investment in targeted industries, said Sumet Thangprasert, acting governor of the IEAT. The authority is preparing to open the new industrial estate and conducting a feasibility study on hydrogen fuel to serve investors who want to use clean energy. Hydrogen fuel is expected to be used at Smart Park as well as Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate. The IEAT divided Smart Park into four zones, with an industrial area covering most of the total park area, comprising 621.5 rai. The other zones are commercial, green and an area where infrastructure, including floating solar farms, are built. The 12-billion-baht Smart Park focuses on targeted industries, including digital technology, medical devices, robotics, as well as aviation and logistics. The park also supports a campaign to achieve a net-zero target, a balance between greenhouse gas emissions and absorption. Smart Park is expected to create 7,459 jobs and generate 1.3 billion baht a year for the economy, according to the IEAT. The construction of the third phase of Map Ta Phut deep-sea port is also making good progress, estimated at 90% complete, said Mr Sumet. The facility is scheduled to start operations in 2027. Once the infrastructure development at the port is completed, the IEAT plans to co-develop a new dock to facilitate the transport and storage of liquid goods, including liquefied natural gas. The dock, with carrying capacity of 4 million tonnes per year, is equipped with 102 storages and five slop tanks. Since its establishment in 1972, the IEAT has developed 191,515 rai of industrial areas housing 5,381 factories, mostly in car and auto parts, metal, electronic and chemical industries. An Australian teenager who tragically died from suspected methanol poisoning "was on the trip of a lifetime" with one of her best friends, her heartbroken dad has said. Bianca Jones and her pal Holly Bowles, both 19, fell ill after a night out in Vang Vieng, a Laos town popular with tourists. Ms Jones died on Thursday and her friend on Friday. Now, Bianca's father, Mark Jones, has spoken out after the tragedy as he urged the government of Laos to investigate what happened. He also said his daughter "wanted to explore the world , meet new friends, lead and create change for good" and hoped to build "lifelong memories" during her trip which "was to be the first of many." Mr Jones told The Age : "This was meant to be a trip full of lifelong memories, and was to be the first of many. Bianca wanted to explore the world, meet new friends, lead and create change for good." In a plea to the Laos government, the grieving father added: "I would like to take this opportunity to urge the Laos government to investigate this to the fullest extent, to make sure this incident doesn't happen again. We can't have the passing of our daughter ... not lead to change to protect others." It comes after Holly's family said she was "living her best live" while travelling through South East Asia, "meeting new friends and enjoying incredible experiences." They added: "We are so sad to say that our beautiful girl Holly is now at peace. We find comfort and solace in knowing Holly brought so much joy and happiness to so many people." Among the six victims of the suspected poisoning was also 28-year-ol British lawyer Simone White, whose family said in a statement: "We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful, kind and loving daughter Simone. Simone was one of a kind and had the most wonderful energy and spark for life. She was a soul who gave so much to so many and was loved by her family, friends and colleagues. "Simone has been taken from us too soon, she will be sorely missed by her brother, grandmother and entire family. Our hearts go out to all other families who have been affected by this terrible tragedy." The other three travellers who have died are an American and two Danish tourists. Earlier today, the Laos government said it is "profoundly saddened" and is investigating the deaths of six people from suspected methanol poisoning. Police in Laos have detained the manager and owner of a hostel over the six travellers' deaths. In a statement released to the media, the Laos government said it was "profoundly saddened" over the deaths of foreign tourists and offered its condolences to their families. It added that is has been investigating "to find causes of the incident" and to "bring the perpetrators to justice." An officer at Vang Vieng's Tourism Police office said no charges have been filed but a "number of people" have been detained in the case. Staff at the Nana Backpacker Hostel, which is still operating but not accepting new guests, confirmed the manager and owner were among those taken in for questioning. Those poisoned in the incident are believed to have been served drinks tainted with methanol, which is sometimes used by disreputable bars as a cheaper alternative to ethanol, but can cause severe poisoning or death. Duong Duc Toan, manager of the Nana Backpacker Hostel, said staff were told by other guests that the women were unwell after they failed to check out as planned on November 13, and they arranged transport to a hospital for them. He said the women had joined more than 100 other guests for free shots of Lao vodka offered by the hostel two days earlier. He said no other guest reported any issue, adding the alleged victims had then gone for a night out, returning in the early hours of the morning. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told his country's parliament that 19-year-old Bianca died after being evacuated from Vang Vieng for treatment in a Thai hospital. Thai authorities confirmed Ms Jones died because of a "brain swelling due to high levels of methanol found in her system." Landlocked Laos is one of south-east Asia's poorest nations and a popular tourist destination. Vang Vieng is particularly popular among backpackers seeking partying and adventure sports. Officials in Laos have released almost no details about the case, with the government keeping a tight lid on information. No. 24 UCLA is seeking its eighth straight win on Saturday against an Arizona team that is trying to right the ship after dropping four of its last six games. The game is being played in Phoenix, billed as part of the Hall of Fame Series. It's the first meeting between the storied ex-Pac-12 rivals since the conference's collapse last year and will be the first time the teams have met in a nonconference matchup since 1977. UCLA (8-1) is off to a surprisingly hot start after a nightmarish last season. The Bruins have won seven in a row after falling to New Mexico on Nov. 8. With Boston College trailing defending champion Miami, Flutie threw the Hail Mary and found receiver Gerard Phalen , who made the grab while falling into the end zone behind a pair of defenders for a game-winning 48-yard TD. Flutie and many of his 1984 teammates were honored on the field during BC’s game against North Carolina before the second quarter on Saturday afternoon, the anniversary of the Eagles’ Miracle in Miami. “There’s no way its been 40 years,” Flutie told The Associated Press on the sideline a few minutes before he walked out with some of his former teammates to be recognized after a video of The Play was shown on the scoreboards. It’s a moment and highlight that’s not only played throughout decades of BC students and fans, but around the college football world. “What is really so humbling is that the kids 40 years later are wearing 22 jerseys, still,” Flutie said of his old number. “That amazes me.” That game was played on national TV the Friday after Thanksgiving. Suggesting that the Montreal Canadiens’ decision to acquire top-four, right-shot blueliner Alexandre Carrier from the Nashville Predators means that David Savard is likely going to be traded. The NHL insider argued in a recent trade matcher article for The Athletic that it “is pretty much writing on the wall for the 34-year-old Savard, a pending unrestricted free agent who understood entering this season he could get moved at the deadline.” As part of the post — which was meant to link possible suitors to the most popular names in the trade deadline rumor mill — LeBrun chose the Edmonton Oilers as a fit. Because Savard lacks trade protection, where he goes is out of his control. That said, there are worse places to go as a pending UFA than the Oilers, who are once again Stanley Cup contenders. LeBrun explains: His play has dipped this season, but in the context of a Habs team that’s not been very good defensively, I would imagine Cup contenders would look at Savard’s body of work and conclude it would travel well if he’s put in the right role. Enter the Oilers. There will be sexier trade targets on the market, to be sure, but I think as a sixth or seventh defenseman who can help kill penalties and who won a Cup with the Lightning — plus is a right-shot D — he’s a sensible idea for Edmonton. LeBrun believes he’s not only a good fit for what Edmonton might need, but the price to acquire him would be much less than some of the other options on the market. “Especially considering I don’t think Savard would cost an arm and a leg. “That will be appealing for an Oilers team without a first-round pick this year,” LeBrun says. Would the Oilers Want David Savard for Depth? At a $3.5 million cap hit, the Oilers will want and need the Canadiens to retain some salary in the deal. But, if Edmonton can get Savard at a $1.75 cap hit (the Canadiens have one more spot left to retain), it could be a fit. The Oilers like how their blue line is coming along this season, seemingly finding their groove. But, they are but one injury away from depth issues. A Savard acquisition would give them some peace of mind, and he’s got a wealth of experience in big games, having won a Stanley Cup in 2021.
