HUNTINGTON, W.V. (AP) — Marshall has withdrawn from the Independence Bowl after a coaching change resulted in much of its roster jumping into the transfer portal. The Thundering Herd were slated to play Army on Dec. 28 in Shreveport, Louisiana. But the Independence Bowl and Louisiana Tech announced on Saturday that the Bulldogs will take on the 19th-ranked Black Knights instead. Marshall said it pulled out “after falling below the roster minimum that was deemed medically safe.” The Herd (10-3) beat Louisiana-Lafayette 31-3 last weekend to win the Sun Belt Conference Championship for the first time. The program has won seven games in a row in the same season for the first time since 2020. “We apologize for the nature and timing of this announcement and for the turmoil it has brought to bowl season preparations for Army, the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, the American Athletic Conference and ESPN,” Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill said in a statement. Coach Charles Huff left Marshall for Southern Miss last Sunday, and Tony Gibson, the defensive coordinator at North Carolina State, was announced as his replacement less than an hour later. By Thursday, at least 25 Marshall players had entered the transfer portal. Gibson held a meeting shortly after arriving on campus in Huntington to introduce himself to the team. He followed that up with phone calls, text messages and more meetings Friday and Saturday. “Any time coaches leave to take other jobs, it is emotional,” Gibson said at a news conference Thursday. “And kids that are 18-to-22 years old are going to make emotional decisions instead of just breathing for a day or two.” It's the first bowl for Louisiana Tech (5-7) since 2020. The Bulldogs have won two of their last three games, but they haven't played since a 33-0 victory over Kennesaw State on Nov. 30. “We are excited to accept the opportunity to play in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl against a fantastic and storied program as Army,” Louisiana Tech athletic director Ryan Ivey said in a release. “I believe our football program is moving toward positive structure and the opportunity to play in this bowl adds to that momentum. We are looking forward to being in Shreveport for this matchup.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . The best luxury electric cars: which model to chooseMarshall withdraws from Independence Bowl matchup against Army

Do you know who Austen Pleasants or Charlie Heck are? Don’t worry about it. Before this week, I didn’t either, and knowing practice-squad-level offensive linemen is my thing. Either way, we’ll likely hear their names often on Monday Night Football, as one of those newcomers will be protecting 49ers’ quarterback Brock Purdy’s blindside against the Lions. The other might be bookending him at the opposite tackle spot. Best of luck out there, 13! But that’s not all, folks. By extrapolating the way the season has gone for the 49ers into Monday, don’t be surprised if we see a third offensive-line newcomer — interior lineman Matt Hennessy — against the Lions. Yes, a bad situation first turned worse for the 49ers, and now it’s turned downright cruel, with potentially three players who were acquired (on waivers and poached from practice squads) protecting their potentially $60 million man. And with the 49ers having nothing to play for in the standings, it’s enough to make you wonder if Kyle Shanahan should even bother playing Purdy — or any of the Niners’ other top players, for that matter — this week or next. After all, if these next two weeks are, effectively, preseason football for 2025, shouldn’t the 49ers head coach treat them as such? (As a refresher, Shanahan hates the preseason and would, in an ideal world, not play anyone who could potentially make the 53-man roster.) This is the first time the 49ers have faced truly meaningless games in years — going back to the pandemic 2020 season — so it’s a fair question. But I think it should be saved for the season’s final week, when both the Cardinals and 49ers will play a game that both teams would be better off losing. Yes, so long as there is one team in a game with something to play for in the standings — for the Lions, that’s a shot at the No. 1 seed in the NFC – it’s incumbent on the 49ers to maintain a code of professionalism and put something close to their best out on the field. So unless you’re injured, you’re going into harm’s way. “Welcome to the reality of the world,” Shanahan said Thursday. The game might not always mean anything as it releases to the playoffs, but the beauty of the NFL is that every game — no, every snap — is an opportunity to show your worth. “This is your job... Teams all over the league are in this situation. You’ve still got to go out there and perform the same way.” “You get 17 checks for 17 games.” And, for the record, Purdy said this week that he’s “100 percent healthy.” So, yes, he’s playing. And that should remain the case until the Lions open up an insurmountable lead on Monday. (We might not have to wait long.) Not just because of the code of professionalism or pride but also because there is still something to be gleaned from Purdy’s performance. As I wrote a few weeks back, the season’s final games would be a referendum on Purdy . The 49ers will sign him this offseason, but how the team and fan base feel about that new contract will be determined by what Purdy has done for the 49ers lately. I don’t need to tell you that the fan base isn’t too keen on Purdy signing a record-breaking, market-setting deal. Reaching that standard might never happen — the mere concept of a $60 million quarterback has folks’ heads spinning (even though with recent-season salary-cap growth, it’d be the equivalent of Jimmy Garoppolo’s record-setting contract from 2018). But Purdy performing at a high level on Monday could sway at least the rational amongst us. Not only would he be doing that with a makeshift (if that) offensive line and a second-string receiver group (we’ll see if Deebo Samuel shows up again on Monday), but he’d have done it against the kind of defense that has stymied him this entire season. The way to beat the 49ers and Purdy is to play man coverage and blitz in strange and confusing ways. The Lions play more man coverage than anyone else in the NFL and have been blitzing like crazy in recent weeks. It all makes Monday something close to a perfect data point. Yes, the circumstances are hardly ideal for Purdy, but a $60 million quarterback is expected to smooth at least some of the issues the Niners will face. And wouldn’t it be good to know if Purdy can beat man-to-man coverage? Monday’s game would leave zero doubt if he flails and be one hell of a negotiating point for him if he succeeds. And beyond all of that, the Niners quarterback needs to develop some rhythm, chemistry, and verve with this offense heading into next season. It’s not all his fault that the Niners have regressed to the point where this game is meaningless for San Francisco, but he needs to be part of the solution. Can he get something going with Ricky Pearsall? Can he keep George Kittle in that deserved first-team All-Pro spot? Can he help buy another year of Deebo Samuel in Niners’ red? Can he help one of these new offensive linemen land a job with the Niners (or another team) next season? If the risk of injury is deemed too high, then we might as well never practice or play football again. Call the NFL and ESPN and tell them the game is canceled—the Niners can’t win the Super Bowl, so they’re taking their ball and staying home. Because above everything else, it does comes down to professionalism. Is this effectively the preseason? Sure. But you’re not paid for the preseason — you merely earn a per diem for those games. On Monday night, everyone will receive a handsome check for their services. Even Purdy, the lowly-paid quarterback, will earn close to $60,000 for his work week. That’s enough to pay off two-thirds of one of those new trucks he bought his offensive linemen. Yes, being in the NFL is a great job, if you can get it. And the surest way to lose it is to take it for granted. ©2024 MediaNews Group, Inc. Visit at mercurynews.com. Viral Video: The internet was left fuming with all kinds of reactions, leading to many demanding action, soon after a disturbing video of a tiger began to circulate on social media. The clip showed two men parading the big cat on a busy street, while it was tied to an elephant’s back. Yes, you read that correctly. The scene looked horrifyingly inhuman, as not only did the unusual capture looked risky for the wild animals and people on the road, but it also posed serious questions on the blatant acceptance of ‘animal cruelty’. One of the capturers was even seen twisting the wild big cat’s ears to show its face to commuters on the street. What further made the clip hard to watch was how insensitively the other capturer- along with a few people around them- was recording the tiger being paraded in all the wrong ways possible. The viral video’s caption read that the incident took place in Bihar, which only drew further outrage. However, did that actually happen, or there is more to the incident? Well, as per multiple reports, it turned out that the video was more than a decade old. The clip only recently resurfaced online and went viral. The incident unfolded in Uttarakhand in January 2011, where the man-eater tiger was reportedly responsible for ‘killing 6 people’. The tiger was later killed by the authorities, as per Free Press Journal. Regardless, concerns related to ‘animal cruelty’ still stayed strong, keeping in mind the way the capturers were behaving while ‘transporting’ the wild man-eater. As the clip went viral, many who were not aware of it being old commented and demanded action. Replying to the matter, Indian Forest Service officer Parveen Kaswan joined in to clear the confusion, as he wrote, “It’s an old video of 2011 from Ramnagar of Uttarakhand. The tiger killed 6 people and was later hunted down by authorities. It was transported on an elephant, maybe vehicles were not able to go to the place.” The clip was shared on X (formerly Twitter), by the handle ‘guru_ji_ayodhya’. The post was shared a few days ago and pulled more than a million views. Watch the viral video: The internet was quick to comment on the incident, where the reactions were a mix of outrage and confusion. Reminding netizens of the law, a user condemned the act and wrote, “This is not the place for the poor animals. Indian Tiger is an endangered animal and is listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. This act gives it protection against hunting/poaching and trade for skins, bones and body parts.” Another internet user chastised the narration of the clip and commented, “Why are presenting the clip as if it’s something funny? None of this is funny.” A third netizen expressed their disappointment over the handling of the incident, as they wrote, “The incident is from Uttarakhand where the tiger was responsible for killing people. It was a man-eater. But this was also not exactly the correct way to handle the animal.” Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from Viral and around the world.LOUISVILLE, Ky. Shares of Toast ( TOST -3.74% ) have had an unbelievable year. As of this writing, they have skyrocketed 110% just in 2024 (as of Dec. 11). That gain outperforms the Nasdaq Composite index . However, this growth stock still trades 41% below its peak, which might be compelling for investors looking to buy the dip. Before you do that, here are three things you need to know about Toast. 1. Its target market Toast is a hardware and software company that caters specifically to the needs of the restaurant industry. For example, it offers point-of-sale devices to help accept payment methods. Its suite of services also includes marketing tools, employee management, omnichannel capabilities, loyalty programs, and loans. Investors can view the company's offerings as being the operating system of a restaurant. One obvious downside of serving restaurants is how sensitive that market is to macro forces. If there are recessionary fears and consumer confidence takes a hit, money spent by households on eating out is an easy thing to cut. Add this to a high failure rate in the industry, and it's not exactly the best backdrop for a company like Toast. In the three-month period that ended Sept. 30, the company generated $1.3 billion in revenue, of which 14% consisted of subscription services. Investors want to see this figure go up because it's an extremely high-margin source of sales for the business. 2. Switching costs In order to be a successful long-term investor, I think finding businesses that possess an economic moat is a key part of the equation. These high-quality companies have certain traits that allow them to defend their industry positions against existing rivals, as well as new entrants. With that backdrop, I believe it's clear that Toast is building an economic moat of its own. Software enterprises, particularly those that have become crucial to their customers' daily lives, benefit from switching costs . This could also apply to the banking sector. Imagine if you had to change your credit cards, bank accounts, and brokerage to another financial institution. Think about the headache that would cause. Toast is likely benefiting from its own switching costs. Management doesn't provide data on churn, but it's a good sign that the customer base keeps expanding. Moreover, some customers are using more and more services over time and as their needs evolve, a clear indication of how entrenched Toast is becoming. Put yourself in the shoes of a restaurant owner or manager. Once a specific location's employees are trained on Toast's products and services, and those tools become fully integrated and work seamlessly, it's difficult to change this setup. The risk is that you cause operational disruptions. As long as Toast continues to provide a fantastic user experience, it will keep existing customers happy and be able to bring on new ones. Toast is also developing brand strength. Management points out that 75% of its customers come from inbound marketing channels, and a notable 20% come from referrals. 3. Growth potential As an earlier-stage enterprise, Toast has exhibited noteworthy growth. Revenue in the third quarter was 168% higher than in the same period three years ago. Wall Street consensus estimates see the top line expanding 89% between 2023 and 2026, still a robust pace. Key to the company's strategy is to bring on more customers at a rapid clip. Toast currently has 127,000 different restaurant locations on its roster, after adding 7,000 in the last quarter. But management sees huge opportunities both in the U.S. and internationally. Domestically, there are 875,000 restaurants in total. And outside the U.S., that figure balloons to about 14 million (excluding China). And restaurants are expected to spend $55 billion in the U.S. just on technology this year. That environment indicates that Toast still has lots of runway ahead of it. If you are looking to buy the stock, now you know more about Toast's customer value proposition, its switching costs, and the company's growth potential.Biden Takes A Dig At Trump While Delivering Remarks On Jimmy Carter's Death | WatchRomania’s defiant far-right presidential candidate, Calin Georgescu, on Sunday (December 8, 2024) stood outside a closed polling station to denounce a Supreme Court’s unprecedented decision to annul the first round of the vote in which he emerged as the frontrunner. The Constitutional Court on Friday (December 6, 2024) canceled the election after a trove of declassified intelligence alleged Russia organised a sprawling campaign across social media to promote Mr. Georgescu. “Today is Constitution Day and there is nothing constitutional in Romania anymore. I am here in the name of democracy,” Mr. Georgescu, 62, told media in Mogosoaia, outside Bucharest. “By cancelling democracy, our very freedom is cancelled.” The Court cited the illegal use of digital technologies including artificial intelligence, as well as undeclared sources of funding. Without naming Mr. Georgescu, the Court said one candidate received “preferential treatment" on social media platforms, distorting voters’ expressed will. Despite being a huge outsider who declared zero campaign spending, Mr. Georgescu topped the polls in the first round on Nov. 24, and was due on Sunday (Dec. 8, 2024) to face reformist Elena Lasconi of the Save Romania Union party in a runoff. Thirteen candidates ran in the first round of the presidential race in the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) member country, the aftermath of which was gripped by myriad controversies including a recount of the vote ordered by the same Court. New dates will be set to rerun the presidential vote from scratch. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said in a statement marking Constitution Day on Sunday (Dec. 8, 2024) that “we find ourselves in a moment of profound responsibility toward the values that characterise us as a nation”. “The Romanian Constitution defines the framework within which the state and political life operate, serving as a shield against threats to democracy,” he said. “In turbulent times, state institutions are called upon to act with calm, wisdom and respect for the law, the Constitution and democracy.” George Simion, the 38-year-old leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, told reporters outside a closed polling station in Bucharest on Sunday (Dec. 8, 2024) that the annulment amounted to an attack against democracy, saying Mr. Iohannis should “take a step back and respect the Constitution, not mock it.” “It is Constitution Day. It is a day of significance for Romanians. It is a day when Romanians should have gone to vote freely,” he said, adding that “blood was shed for this 35 years ago”, referring to Romania’s revolution in December 1989 that overthrew communism. After Mr. Georgescu unexpectedly topped the polls in the first round, his success left many political observers wondering how most local surveys had placed him behind at least five other candidates before the vote. Many observers attributed his success to his TikTok account, which now has 6.2 million likes and 565,000 followers. But some experts suspected Mr. Georgescu’s online following was artificially inflated, while Romania’s top security body alleged he was given preferential treatment by TikTok over other candidates. On Saturday (Decemb,r 7, 2024) Romanian prosecutors conducted raids at three properties in the central city of Brasov linked to Bogdan Peschir, who is suspected of illegally financing a campaign to promote Mr. Georgescu. The raids were based on suspicions of voter corruption, money laundering and cyber fraud, prosecutors said. The secret services alleged that Mr. Peschir paid $3,81,000 (361,000 euros) to TikTok users to promote Mr. Georgescu content on the Chinese-owned platform. Intelligence authorities said information they obtained “revealed an aggressive promotion campaign” to increase and accelerate Mr. Georgescu’s popularity. There is no clear link between Mr. Peschir and alleged Russian interference. Russia denies meddling in Romania. On Friday (December 6, 2024), Mr. Georgescu's would-be Opponent Ms. Lasconi also strongly condemned the Court’s decision to annul the elections, saying it was “illegal, immoral, and crushes the very essence of democracy” and that the second round should have gone forward. Published - December 08, 2024 10:22 pm IST Copy link Email Facebook Twitter Telegram LinkedIn WhatsApp Reddit Romania / constitutionQuality education being pushed away from reach of middle and lower classes: JI chief KARACHI/HYDERABAD: A few influential persons have taken Pakistan into their clutches, as a result of which poor Pakistani people are deprived of their due rights. Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said this on Sunday while addressing thousands of youths who had appearing in an aptitude test for the JI’s Bano Qabil programme at the Nishtar Park. He said the corrupt system of governance in the country had enabled a minority hyper elite class to rule over it. He held the corrupt system responsible for all the miseries of the nation and urged the youth to support the JI in its struggle against the corrupt system. According to a statement issued by the JI, Rehman alleged that 90 per cent of the members of legislative assemblies were trillionaires, whereas 98 per cent of people were unable to find a way to prosperity. He added that even education had been pushed away from the reach of lower and middle economic classes. Nations did not progress if the education sector was made a business and unfortunately this was the case in Pakistan, he lamented. He added that the education budget for Sindh was more than Rs481 billion but not even a single Pakistan Peoples Party leader or anyone belonging to the secretariat was willing to send their children to any public school for education. The JI chief said the people had been kept deprived of basic necessities, including water and electricity. He asserted that the feudal lords in the assemblies would not be allowed to decide the fate of masses. Talking about the contribution of the JI to the education sector, he said the Bano Qabil programme had been expanded across the country from Karachi. He added that in the next two years, free information technology courses would be offered to one million young people. He announced that the JI would also be offering degree courses as well in the days to come. Karachi JI Emir Monem Zafar, Alkhidmat CEO Naveed Ali Baig and others also addressed the participants of the ceremony. A day earlier on Saturday, Rehman addressed a press conference in Hyderabad on the Parachinar massacre and other issues, and stated that both the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and federal governments had failed to maintain peace in the tribal areas. He said the killing of a large number of people travelling in caravans in Parachinar was not a communal issue. He demanded that the government identify other forces present there. The JI chief asked from where weapons had come to the dacoits in Katcha areas of Sindh. He said Bilawal Bhutto Zardari showed off by going around temples but failed to protect the Hindu community. He said that although Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was not part of the federal cabinet, it was holding several key constitutional positions in the centre because it was part of the Pakistan Democratic Movement, and so it could not fool the people. He alleged that President Asif Ali Zardari approved six canals on the Indus River in July 2024, but now the PPP’s Sindh government was protesting against the federal government. Rehman maintained that all the parties in the PDM had together made the water plan. He remarked that being part the PDM, the PPP was part of the federal government government. It passed laws and constitutional amendment together with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and also gave extension together. He said Zardari had signed the Cholistan scheme, and asked why the PPP was now fooling the people when they had raised hue and cry about the 1991 Water Accord. He warned that if the water share of Sindh was reduced, more problems would arise. The JI leader said that unfortunately the establishment in the country prepared leaders and brought them into governments, after which they failed. He said the JI would not beg the establishment to bring it into power. Terming the PPP a decadent party, Rehman said if the establishment stopped supporting it today, the PPP would come down with a bang. He lamented that Hyderabad was a city with great historical heritage but it had been damaged by the oppressors. In response to a question, the JI chief said every party had the right to protest, and if the PTI had said it would shut down the entire country, the government actually shut down everything by installing containers. He said 30 per cent of the people were elected unopposed in the local bodies elections in Sindh and the rest of the seats were captured, and similary the general elections were earlier rigged through the Form 47.

Omar Kelly: Question Tua’s durability, not his competitive nature

Party leader Holly Cairns, who gave birth to a baby girl on polling day, is well placed to retain her seat in the highly competitive constituency of Cork South-West. The Social Democrats, founded in 2015, won six seats in the 2020 election with around 3% of first preference votes. The exit poll after Friday’s General Election put the party on 5.8%, which would give them the most support of the smaller groups in the Dail. Social Democrats Wicklow candidate Jennifer Whitmore said she was “feeling great” as she arrived at the count centre in Greystones on Saturday. “It’s been a really positive result so far. Obviously, a little bit to go yet, but it’s looking really good,” she said of tallies that put her on 14% support and in line for the third of four seats in the constituency. “I think even across the country it’s looking good for the Soc Dems. “I’m hearing really positive things from all the different count centres, so it looks like our six TDs will hopefully be returned, and then we could be in contention for a number of other seats as well, so it’s a really positive day for us.” Asked whether the party would be willing to enter government formation talks with Fine Gael and Fianna Fail, Ms Whitmore said: “There’s still a while to go. “We’re in contention for a number of seats, but we’ll wait until we get them delivered and then we’ll be thinking about talking to the others.” Asked if she was worried by how support for the Green Party looks to have dropped after being a junior government partner, Ms Whitmore said small parties “can often bear the brunt of being in government”. “I think that’s why we were really clear that we set out our five deal-breakers, because we wanted to be very upfront with the public to say ‘if we do go into government, here is what we will be able to achieve’. “We didn’t want to over-promise, and we didn’t want to give people the impression that we were going to do things that we weren’t going to be able to get. “So we were really clear and very transparent in saying, ‘these are the five things that we would achieve if we go in’, and hopefully that will stand to us in the negotiations.” She said that Ms Cairns, who became leader last March, would remain involved in the party over her maternity leave, with deputy leader Cian O’Callaghan stepping in. Mr O’Callaghan said on Saturday his party’s “red lines” were not intended to rule them out of being in government with Fianna Fail or Fine Gael. “This is about defining our negotiations and talks with the parties once the election counts are over,” he said. On a common platform for left-wing parties to negotiate from, Mr O’Callaghan said: “We certainly intend on talking to the Labour Party and other parties over the coming days and weeks, that’s our intention.” The Social Democrats were co-founded by Roisin Shortall and Catherine Murphy in July 2015 – along with then-independent TD Stephen Donnelly, who later joined Fianna Fail and became health minister. Asked about the difficulty facing Mr Donnelly to keep his seat in Wicklow, Ms Whitmore said it was always going to be “a dogfight” for the “highly contested” fourth and final seat in the constituency. “When I was going around on the doors, I was getting a lot of positive feedback from people. People weren’t really talking about other parties or mentioning other candidates. “So I think it wasn’t clear from that what was going to happen, but I think the fourth seat was always going to be the really messy one.”
