CAMPBELL Love can now add Victoria Country selection to what has so far been both an individual and team cricket season that is tracking along just nicely. or signup to continue reading Strathfieldsaye's Love has earned his first senior selection in the Victoria Country men's team to play at next month's Australian Country Cricket Championships in the Barossa Valley. Love's selection continues Bendigo's strong link to the team with many of the competition's stars over the years having played for Victoria Country. Love has represented Victoria Country at under-15 and under-17 level previously and impressed during the trials to earn his spot in this season's senior squad of 14. "It's a big thrill to have been selected. It's a carnival where you get the chance to play against the best country cricketers and I've already learned a lot just from the trials," Love said this week. "It will be a great learning curve and an experience I'm really looking forward to." Love, who has been picked primarily as a bowler, will be part of a Victorian Country team aiming to bounce back from last season when it had been leading the competition heading into the last day, but a loss to New South Wales cost it the title, with Queensland claiming the honours. The support staff for the Victoria Country men's team includes BDCA president Travis Harling as manager, while Luke Manders is coach. Beginning on January 3, Victoria Country will play nine games - a mix of one-day and Twenty20 matches - at the championships. Love's Victoria Country selection comes in what is his first season as captain of Strathfieldsaye, taking over from Ben Devanny, who had done the job for the previous 11 years. It's a season in which Love has already become a part of Strathfieldsaye history having set a new club record partnership with Devanny during the Jets' round three win over Bendigo United at Junortoun. Love and Devanny put on 202 for the fifth wicket, not only setting a new Jets' partnership record, but also helping propel Strathfieldsaye to its highest BDCA first XI score of 391. With three wins and a draw the Jets sit second on the first XI ladder behind only Golden Square, while they are also still alive in the BDCA's knockout Twenty20 competition having defeated Sandhurst in round one. "We've had different players step up throughout the season and have been really sharing the load," said Love, who is at No.8 in the MVP rankings with 321 points. "You look at Jack Bell in the Twenty20 game the other week coming in and taking a five-for... it's little finds like that which help to take the pressure off guys like Chatty (Chathura Damith), Savy (Savith Priyan) and Ben (Devanny). "I'm very pleased with how we're going as a team." After last Saturday's washouts the BDCA has one-day matches scheduled for round five on Saturday. Strathfieldsaye is headed to Dower Park to take on Kangaroo Flat, which is coming off its first win of the season last round against Bendigo. One-day games are also scheduled for the Emu Valley Cricket Association. DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team.
