Morez Johnson Jr. recorded his first double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, Kylan Boswell posted 13 points and Tomislav Ivisic contributed 11 for Illinois (4-1). Coming off a 100-87 loss to No. 8 Alabama on Wednesday, the Illini led by as much as 52 despite hitting just 10-of-40 3-point attempts. Jalen Ware paced Maryland Eastern Shore (2-6) with 10 points before fouling out. Ketron "KC" Shaw, who entered Saturday in the top 20 of Division I scorers at 22.3 points per game, went scoreless in the first half and finished with seven points on 2-of-11 shooting. The Hawks canned just 22.1 percent of their shots from the floor. Illinois broke out to a 6-0 lead in the first 2:06, then missed its next six shots. That gave the Hawks time to pull into an 8-8 tie on Evan Johnson's 17-foot pullup at the 12:21 mark. That marked Maryland Eastern Shore's last points for more than seven minutes as the Illini reeled off 17 straight points to remove any suspense. Johnson opened the spree with a basket and two free throws, Ben Humrichous swished a 3-pointer and Tre White sank a layup before Kasparas Jakucionis fed Ivisic for a 3-pointer and an alley-oop layup. Jakucionis set up Johnson for a free throw, then drove for an unchallenged layup to make it 25-8 with 5:15 left in the first. Evan Johnson snapped the visitors' dry spell with a driving layup at the 4:56 mark, but Illinois went on to establish a 35-15 halftime lead on the stretch of 11 offensive rebounds that turned into 12 second-chance points and 13 points off UMES' 10 turnovers. Maryland Eastern Shore needed nearly four minutes to get its first points in the second half as Illinois pushed its lead to 42-15. The Illini margin ballooned all the way to 70-24 on Boswell's driving layup with 8:11 to go. --Field Level Media

Relax, take a deep breath and know that dinner is served. Crispy–Garlicky Sheet Pan Grilled Cheese Serves 4. Making grilled cheese for more than one can be tricky. Here, the sheet pan does the work; the sandwiches are ready all at once. Try our suggested fillings or just enjoy them plain in all their gooey deliciousness. From Beth Dooley. Directions Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper. Spread the butter to the edge of 4 slices of bread. Place the slices butter-side down on the sheet pan. Top with the sliced cheese and add a layer of the filling, then top with the remaining slices of bread. Put the pan in the oven and cook until the butter is thoroughly melted and bottom slices are turning golden and the cheese is melting, about 8 to 10 to minutes. Flip the sandwiches. Continue cooking until the top layer of bread begins to turn golden and the cheese is melted. Turn the oven to broil and toast the top layer, watching closely, this goes quickly, about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Flip the bread and toast the other side, about 15 to 20 seconds or so. Remove, cut and serve. Quick Skillet Chicken with Lemon, Tahini and Warm Spices will come together quickly and can be served on a bed of greens or pasta. (Ashley Moyna Schwickert/For the Minnesota Star Tribune) Quick Skillet Chicken with Lemon, Tahini and Warm Spices Serves 4 to 6. A simple marinade of pantry staples — lemon, tahini, olive oil and a little honey — keeps the chicken moist and becomes the sauce for finishing the dish. Serve on a bed of dark greens or cooked rice. From Beth Dooley. Directions In a large bowl, whisk together the lemon, tahini, honey and olive oil. Measure out 1⁄2 of the mixture into a separate bowl. This is to sauce the chicken after it’s cooked. If it seems too thick, whisk in a little water. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and pound with the flat edge of a knife to even out the width a bit. Put the chicken into the bowl of marinade and turn to coat. Film a heavy skillet with more oil and set over high heat. When the oil begins to ripple, add the chicken, reduce the heat to medium and cook, flipping after about 5 to 7 minutes, and continuing, until cooked through, about 10 to 15 minutes. (The chicken should reach 165 on an instant-read thermometer when done.) Remove the chicken from the skillet, set on a cutting board to rest for about 10 minutes. Slice the meat in long strokes against the grain. Serve on a bed of greens or rice, garnished with a drizzle of sauce, chopped herbs and a few thinly sliced lemons. Pass additional sauce on the side. One-Pot Pasta with Sausage, Tomato and Spinach is a quick but hearty meal for busy, chilly nights. (Ashley Moyna Schwickert/For the Minnesota Star Tribune) One-Pot Pasta with Sausage, Tomatoes and Spinach Serves 4 to 6. You only need one pot for this simple pasta. The sausage adds the seasoning, the onions turn sweetly golden, cherry tomatoes burst into a luscious sauce. A squeeze of lemon at the end livens things up. From Beth Dooley. Directions Film a large heavy pot or Dutch oven with the oil and set over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until it turns limp and golden, about 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in the sausage, breaking apart with a spatula until it crumbles, about 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes and the stock, scraping up the bottom of the pan to release browned bits that stick to the bottom. Bring to a boil. Add the pasta, stirring well and continue boiling for about 4 to 5 minutes. Turn the heat down to a brisk simmer, stirring to keep the pasta from sticking to the bottom of the pot. If the sauce becomes too thick and the pasta begins to stick, stir in water, about 1⁄4 cup at a time. Simmer until the sauce is mostly absorbed and the pasta is tender, about 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and stir in the spinach, then stir in the cheese. Add lemon juice to taste. Serve garnished with the chopped parsley. The popularity of online shopping has surged due to its convenience, similar or lower prices than in-store, the availability of services like “buy online, pick up in-store (BOPIS)” and fast, free deliveries, said Michael Schulman, a retail expert at Running Point Capital Advisors. “The shortened holidays season this year compared to last year, with a tighter scrunch between Thanksgiving and Christmas, also left less time for in-store retail shopping and probably incentivized more phone and computer browsing and purchases,” he said. While there were deals aplenty, retailers appeared to have been disciplined with promotions. Target and Dollar Tree’s shares were up nearly 3% in noon trading, while Walmart was flat. According to a Mastercard SpendingPulse report, online spending during the holiday shopping period from Nov. 1 to Dec. 24 grew by 6.7% over last year, compared to a 2.9% increase for in-store sales. This contributed to a total spending increase of 3.8% over 2023, surpassing the previously forecast rise of 3.2% and topping the 3.1% increase during the same period last year. Steve Sadove, senior adviser to Mastercard and former Saks CEO and chairman, told Reuters that spending rose even when higher prices due to inflation were factored in. He noted that the last five days of the holiday season accounted for 10% of all holiday spending, showing “a lot of strength in the end.” With just 27 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas — five fewer than last year - retail executives were less exuberant going into the holiday season. They described their consumers as “selective,” “cautious” and “conservative,” and making “needs-based” purchases. As a result, many retailers doubled down on cutting prices and offering promotions, Bernstein analysts said earlier this month. Walmart said it would continue to bring down prices through rollbacks, while rival Target said it would increase its promotional intensity as shoppers were not as engaged without promotions. Dollar General said it expects profits to be pressured from increased promotions in the fourth quarter, while Kroger and Five Below also said they had to reduce prices to be competitive. Walmart and Target spent more on ads to reach shoppers on short-video app TikTok and streaming platforms like Peacock and Hulu during the season, highlighting their membership programs that offer quick delivery and BOPIS. Some of these efforts appear to have worked. Salesforce estimated that the number of BOPIS orders could double during the weekend before Christmas, making up nearly 40% of all online orders for retailers. And deliveries are also strong, with FedEx estimating stronger-than-expected holiday delivery volume last week. Huntsville, Alabama-resident Aireale Hobbs, 40, started Christmas shopping for pajama sets, Stanley drink tumblers, and toys for her family online on Black Friday. She said she chose to do a bulk of her shopping online because of convenience, more options and better deals. “I got some things from Target that were discounted when using the app,” said Hobbs, who works at as a front desk clerk at a doctor’s office. Laptops and TVs with new technology, lower prices and growing acceptance of lab-grown diamonds, and athleisure apparel also encouraged shoppers to spend this holiday season, even though promotions were at the same levels as last year, Sadove said. “Promotions were controlled. Nothing was extra deep and there were no panicked promotions. What we saw was some real consumer strength,” Sadove said, adding that low unemployment and higher wages were buffering personal finances. Sales in the apparel, jewelry and electronics categories were up 3.6%, 4% and 3.7%, respectively over last year, according to Mastercard. Online sales of apparel, in particular, grew 6.7%, compared to 0.2% in stores.
Global stock markets mostly retreated Tuesday as traders eyed looming US inflation data and a key European interest rate call amid global political upheaval. After winning numerous records in the weeks since the November 5 US presidential election, US stocks fell for the second straight day as analysts pointed to profit-taking. But Alphabet jumped more than five percent after Google showed off a new quantum computing chip that it described as a significant breakthrough in the field, arguing it could lead to advances in drug discovery, fusion energy and other areas. The Paris stock market retreated as French party leaders gathered at President Emmanuel Macron's Elysee Palace office to chart a route towards a new government. The euro also fell ahead of the European Central Bank's monetary policy meeting on Thursday. The ECB is expected to lower interest rates by 25 basis points amid weak eurozone growth. Independent analyst Andreas Lipkow said traders were taking a cautious approach ahead of the ECB meeting. The main US indexes struggled as traders eyed US consumer price inflation (CPI) data due Wednesday, which could play a role in whether the US Federal Reserve decides to cut interest rates next week. On Wall Street, "tomorrow's CPI report is in full focus with a looming rate-decision from the Fed coming," analyst Bret Kenwell of trading platform eToro said in a note. Following recent spending and jobs data "traders have felt even more emboldened to bet on a December rate cut, while the Fed has done little... to quiet that expectation," he added. Earlier, stock markets weighed "concerns that China's economic stimulus measures might not have a long-lasting effect", noted Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell. The growth plan comes as Beijing contemplates Donald Trump's second term in the White House. The US president-elect has indicated he will reignite his hardball trade policies, fueling fears of another standoff between the economic superpowers. The Shanghai stock market ended higher but Hong Kong fell. Seoul's Kospi index rallied more than two percent after tumbling since President Yoon Suk Yeol declared short-lived martial law on December 3. On the corporate front, shares in Stellantis rose around one percent on the Paris stock exchange after the car giant and Chinese manufacturer CATL announced plans for a $4.3-billion factory making electric-vehicle batteries in Spain. Walgreens Boots Alliance soared 17.7 percent following reports that it could be acquired by private equity firm Sycamore Partners. Boeing jumped 4.5 percent as it announced it was resuming production at two Seattle-area plants that had been shuttered for nearly three months due to a labor strike. He stressed that the PPP would never compromise on the province’s water rights. He reiterated the party’s longstanding opposition to the Kalabagh Dam, a position that dates back to the time of Benazir Bhutto, who had held a historic sit-in at Kamo Shaheed in District Ghotki. Talking about the party’s role as the province’s representative, Shah said: “The PPP is the true voice of Sindh, and we won’t allow a single drop of Sindh’s water to be taken away.” His remarks underscore the province’s consistent resistance to projects perceived as harmful to its water rights. He emphasised the necessity for the complete implementation of the 1991 Water Accord, and urged that it be granted constitutional protection to safeguard Sindh’s water rights. He also pointed out the PPP’s significant political position in Sindh, saying that the party holds a two-thirds majority in the provincial assembly and represents over 70 per cent of the province’s population. In a thrilling CBA matchup, the Zhejiang Lions faced off against the Guangzhou Loong Lions in what turned out to be a high-scoring affair. The standout performance of the game came from none other than Zhejiang's star player, Wu Qian, who put on an absolute show with his incredible shooting display. After rallying his party's caucus and staffers on Parliament Hill Tuesday with his vision for the "gutsy" campaign he eventually intends to run, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh signalled that he's still not ready to help the other opposition parties trigger an early election, yet. Though, as the only party still propping up the Liberal government, there will be a few chances in the next two weeks, where the NDP's readiness to send Canadians into that campaign early, will be tested. After two months of gridlock, on Monday, House of Commons Speaker Greg Fergus informed MPs that he'll be halting the Conservate-led filibuster of a privilege motion regarding documents related to a now-defunct green technology fund, so that a series of potentially high-stakes votes can happen before the holidays. Fergus ruled that the now months-long debate that's blocked most other House business from advancing can take a back seat temporarily, so that remaining "supply" or opposition days and the supplementary estimates can be delt with. "A privilege motion must take priority over all other orders of the day, still, this practice is not absolute," Fergus said. "The Standing Orders require the House to dispose of supply matters by Dec.10." The Speaker ordered that this Thursday and Friday, and then next Monday and Tuesday will all be allotted as opposition days . Thursday will be a Conservative opposition day, and today the party confirmed it will be advancing a non-confidence motion that quotes Singh's past criticism of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his government. "Whereas the Leader of the New Democratic Party said he 'ripped up' his supply and confidence agreement with the Liberal government. Whereas the NDP Leader said, 'the Liberals are too weak, too selfish and too beholden to corporate interests to fight for people,'" the motion reads in part. Asked Tuesday afternoon how his caucus will vote on this motion pushing for the House of Commons to declare "it has lost confidence in the prime minister and the government," Singh said he wouldn't "play Pierre Poilievre's games," but didn't go so far to confirm how his party will vote on the other coming confidence vote opportunities. Friday's opposition day will go to the NDP , but the Singh has already said his party won't be using it to advance a confidence motion. Both Thursday and Friday's opposition day motions are expected to come to a vote next Monday. Today, the Conservatives confirmed they intend to use all three of their remaining opposition days to try to topple the Liberal minority government and trigger an early election. "Now that even the Liberal Speaker has ruled that Justin Trudeau must face opposition debate on nine years of his failures, common sense Conservatives will put forward three confidence motions that will be debated and voted on starting this week," said Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer in a statement. This decision comes after the Tories shot denied unanimous consent for the Singh-citing opposition day non-confidence motion to be debated yesterday, a move Government House Leader Karina Gould called "quite weak." "But, you know, that's where we are," Gould said. After the Liberals blew off the Bloc Quebecois' ultimatum , Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet has said his party would be ready to join the Conservatives in voting non-confidence in the Liberals when opportunities arise. The Bloc sided with the Conservatives last week in voting against the federal government's five-page piece of legislation to enact Trudeau's promised two-month tax break on a range of consumer goods over the holidays. The Liberals – who first tried unsuccessfully to advance the remaining opposition days by using similar procedural mechanism as seen last week with the GST bill – welcomed the Speaker's decision. "Despite the ridiculous games that the Conservatives have been playing in their attempt to really obstruct the important work of parliamentarians, that we do on behalf of Canadians, we are going to get this work done," Gould said. While facing successive confidence tests in the days ahead, the Speaker's intervention also means Treasury Board President Anita Anand's supplementary estimates — which need MP's sign-off for billions in additional spending to flow for certain departments — will be able come to a vote, preventing a potential U.S.-style shutdown. As of next Tuesday, there will be just five scheduled House of Commons sitting days left until MPs are set to break until the new year. Gould indicated Tuesday that she's "having conversations" with her counterparts about all avenues forward, though barring a major breakthrough, or an agreement to adjourn early, it's expected that the privilege debate filibuster would resume in those remaining days.

Darnold returned to practice after being listed as a limited participant on Wednesday because of a foot injury. The Vikings (8-2) are anticipating another close matchup with the Bears (4-6), who won a field-goal battle at Minnesota last season while head coach Kevin O'Connell was shuttling quarterbacks in and out of the lineup to replace the injured Kirk Cousins. That's not a problem these days. After Cousins left for greener pastures in Atlanta, the Vikings signed Darnold to a one-year deal and drafted Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy in the first round. Darnold already has eight wins, beating the 7-10 mark the Vikings cobbled together with a QB room that spun on fast forward from Cousins, Jaren Hall, Nick Mullens, and Joshua Dobbs. "What we're trying to get from Sam is play the best football of his career," O'Connell said. Darnold is delivering and the Vikings have a three-game winning streak in tow when they arrive at Soldier Field on Sunday. He has posted a 100.0 passer rating in 10 starts. He has completed a career-best 67.9 percent of his passes for 2,387 yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The next touchdown pass will mark a career high for Darnold, who sputtered with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers before serving as the San Francisco 49ers' backup last season. "I just feel like, you know -- not talking about past experiences at all -- but I think here it's the detail that we've had ever since OTAs, ever since April," Darnold said. "We've been able to lock in our progressions. Just our feet, our eyes, where they're supposed to be. And just being on time with the concepts. "If you play like that, it makes the quarterback position a little bit easier." --Field Level Media Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. , opens new tab
