Saquon Barkley is the NFL's version of Shohei Ohtani: AnalysisAndrej Jakimovski hit a layup with 8 seconds left, and Colorado upset No. 2 UConn 73-72 in the consolation bracket of the Maui Invitational on Tuesday in Lahaina, Hawaii. Colorado (5-1) rallied from down 11 in the first half to get the win over the two-time defending national champions Huskies. Jakimovski finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Julian Hammond III and Elijah Malone each scored 16 for the Buffaloes, who advanced to the fifth-place game in Maui on Wednesday. Down 72-71, Jakimovski drove the right side of the lane and made a scoop shot as he was falling down. UConn called timeout to set up the final play but Hassan Diarra missed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left. Liam McNeeley led UConn with 20 points, Solo Ball scored 16 and Diarra finished with 11. The Huskies (4-2) lost two straight for the first time since dropping three in a row from Jan. 11-18, 2023. Colorado trailed by eight at halftime and Diarra hit two 3-pointers early in the second half that made it 46-37. The Buffaloes scored the next 11 points to take a 48-46 lead, their first of the game. Hammond bookended that run with a pair of triples. UConn went back in front 55-52 on Tarris Reed Jr.'s driving layup but Malone's bucket with 8:34 left tied it at 59. McNeeley's hook shot gave the Huskies a 63-60 lead before Jakimovski drained a 3-pointer to tie it again with 5:16 left. Ball hit a 3-pointer and a layup to give UConn a five-point lead but Colorado got within 70-69 on two free throws by Malone with 2:04 left. A putback from Jaylin Stewart made it a three-point game with 1:29 remaining. Malone answered with a layup, Javon Ruffin blocked Diarra's shot and Colorado got an offensive rebound with 24 seconds left to set up the winning basket. McNeeley made his first four shots from deep and had 16 points by intermission to lead the Huskies. Colorado had opportunities to make it a close game by halftime but went just 12-for-19 from the foul line and trailed 40-32. UConn attempted only four free throws in the first half and had five players with two or more fouls, including Reed, who had three. --Field Level Media

Visa (V) inches up 0.32%, reflecting stability in credit services. 🏠 Softness in Real Estate Real estate continues to face softness, notably American Tower (AMT) dropping by 0.98%, highlighting some investor apprehension possibly due to interest rate concerns impacting real estate investment trusts (REITs). 📚 Overall Market Analysis The semiconductor rally, led by Avago, indicates an uplift driven by potential industry advancements or investor sentiment shifts favoring chip stocks. Mixed trends in the technology and real estate sectors suggest caution, while resilience in consumer cyclical and financial sectors supports a balanced market stance. Investors should monitor semiconductor movements closely for continued growth, while diversification into consumer and financial stocks could hedge against tech sector volatility. The fall of Syria’s authoritarian government at the hands of jihadi militants set off waves of jubilation, trepidation and alarm. Across the Middle East and beyond, the fall of Syria’s authoritarian government at the hands of jihadi militants set off waves of jubilation, trepidation and alarm. Expatriate Syrians and many residents across the Middle East exulted at the overthrow of a leader who led his country through 14 years of civil strife that left half a million Syrians dead and displaced millions to countries around the world. While others are worried about further instability rocking a region already in turmoil. Governments — whether allies or opponents of Bashar Assad — scrambled to absorb the sudden, stunning development and assess the implications for the Middle East and the world. In the US, President Joe Biden said that the sudden collapse of the Syrian government under Mr Assad is a “fundamental act of justice” after decades of repression, but it was “a moment of risk and uncertainty” for the Middle East.Speaking at the White House, Mr Biden said the US was not sure of Mr Assad’s whereabouts, but was monitoring reports he was seeking refuge in Moscow. Mr Biden credited action by the US and its allies for weakening Syria’s backers — Russia, Iran and Hezbollah. He said “for the first time” that they could no longer defend Mr Assad’s grip on power. “Our approach has shifted the balance of power in the Middle East,” Mr Biden said. In a social media post on Saturday, before Mr Assad’s fall was confirmed, President-elect Donald Trump said: “Syria is a mess but is not our friend, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!” The US has about 900 troops in Syria, including US forces working with Kurdish allies in the opposition-held north east to prevent any resurgence of the Islamic State group. In Lebanon, thousands of Syrians headed for the Masnaa border crossing to return to their home country, despite the uncertainty. “Anything is better than Bashar,” said Sami Abdel-Latif, a refugee from Hama who was heading back to join his wife and four children. “This is a feeling we’ve been waiting 14 years for,” said Malak Matar, who was preparing to return to the capital of Damascus. Now, he said, “Syrians have to create a state that is well organised and take care of their country.” Many citizens in Syria’s neighbouring countries reacted with joy to the news Mr Assad was gone. In Jordan’s capital, Amman, resident Muhab al-Majali said his fall marked the end of “unjust and tyrannical rule”. “I believe that the future is beautiful and prosperous for the Syrians,” he said. Syria’s neighbours stepped up security along their borders. Lebanon said it was closing all but one of its land border crossings with Syria. Jordan also closed a border crossing. Iran, a key ally of Mr Assad, said the Syrian people should decide their country’s future “without destructive, coercive foreign intervention”. The Foreign Ministry in Tehran said Iran supports Syria’s unity and national sovereignty and hopes to see “the end of military conflicts, the prevention of terrorist activities and the start of a national dialogue” with the participation of all groups. The Iraqi government, which is close to Iran, said it “supports all international and regional efforts seeking to open a dialogue” for Syria. Egypt’s foreign ministry urged a “comprehensive political process” to establish a new era of peace in the war-torn country. The head of Yemen’s internationally recognised government welcomed the fall of Mr Assad as “a historic moment”. Turkey has backed anti-Assad militant groups in Syria and could play a key role in what happens next. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the fall of Assad brought “hope” and he called on the world to help “unite and reconstruct” Syria. In Europe, many governments welcomed Mr Assad’s departure while urging a rapid return to stability. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a statement that the end of Mr Assad’s rule was “good news”, adding that “what matters now is that law and order are quickly restored in Syria”. France’s foreign ministry welcomed the fall of Mr Assad, saying “the Syrian people have suffered too much”. British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also welcomed the end of Mr Assad’s “barbaric regime”. “We call on all sides to protect civilians and minorities and ensure essential aid can reach the most vulnerable in the coming hours and days,” he said. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also called for calm and urged work to ensure an “orderly political transition to renewed institutions”. Russia, which backed Mr Assad with troops and warplanes, said it has been following the “dramatic events” in Syria “with extreme concern”. State media later reported that Mr Assad was in Moscow with his family and they had been granted asylum. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha of Ukraine, which is at war with Russia, wrote on X that the ousted Syrian leader had suffered the fate of “all dictators who bet on (Russian President Vladimir) Putin. He always betrays those who rely on him”.

BEREA, Ohio — Browns rookie defensive lineman Mike Hall Jr. certainly sounds like a guy ready to play on Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs come to town. “I feel like I put a lot of work in these past two days and my knee’s been giving me good feedback,” he said on Thursday after practice. “So I mean, everything’s been great so far.” Feeling good is step one. Now it’s a matter of logistics. Hall was designated to return to practice from injured reserve on Wednesday, after missing the required four games. The Browns have 21 days to activate him. He’s been a limited participant in practice each of the last two days. More Cleveland Browns coverage Browns WR Jerry Jeudy finally has a chance to reach a coveted milestone vs. Chiefs after 4 frustrating seasons in Denver Previewing Browns vs. Chiefs, Cavs after the NBA Cup break: Thursday's Sports 4 CLE Ex-Browns coach hired to replace ex-Browns coach at ACC school Week 15 NFL Preview: Find everything you need to know with our Week 15 NFL preview. The Browns' top pick in the 2024 draft (No. 54 overall) was placed on IR last month after he suffered a sprained right MCL in practice prior to the Week 11 loss in New Orleans. “Just the turf,” Hall said, when asked how the injury happened. “Getting my foot stuck in the ground and trying to make a move after that, but my foot got stuck. “I didn’t know anything. I mean, I didn’t hear any popping or anything like that, or a snap. So it was really just, I mean everybody really didn’t know anything about it. So just had to wait on the MRI and getting that back.” This injury was the second time this season that the 21 year old was kept off the field for an extended period of time. He missed the first five games of the season, serving out a suspension after an Aug. 12 arrest. Hall was accused of shoving his fiancee, dragging her by the feet out the doorway and down the driveway of their Avon home, punching holes in the wall and throwing a baby bottle at her, according to police. Stories by Ashley Bastock Browns receiver Jerry Jeudy seeks a milestone and Mike Hall likely to return: Berea Report (Video) Previewing Browns vs. Chiefs, Cavs after the NBA Cup break: Thursday's Sports 4 CLE What if the Browns had drafted Patrick Mahomes? Orange and Brown Talk Initially, the woman alleged that Hall had put a gun to her head and threatened to kill her, but she later recanted that specific part of her allegation . He practiced the next day, but left with an injury and was placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List on Aug. 27 . The NFL announced a five-game suspension for Hall on Oct. 2, with the four games he had already missed retroactively counting toward the suspension. Hall initially pleaded not guilty to one count of domestic violence before pleading no contest in September in Avon Lake Municipal Court to a charge of disorderly conduct. Judge Allison Manning found him guilty . She suspended a 30-day jail sentence and fined Hall $250 and placed him on two years of inactive, non-reporting probation. “I regret this whole situation,” Hall said in court. “I’m getting counseling and trying to better myself.” He made his NFL debut in Week 6 at Philadelphia and played in the next three games as well, home contests against the Bengals, Ravens and Chargers. In those games, he had four tackles on defense, two quarterback hits and one additional special teams tackle before this knee injury sidelined him. Hall said he was nervous initially waiting to hear if he would need surgery (he ultimately did not), and/or be ruled out for the remainder of his rookie year. “My whole career I never had any serious or season-ending injuries like that, even in high school,” he said. “So yeah, it was definitely, it was kind of weird. It was just a matter of the unknown.” But even with that unknown element of this injury, Hall said he didn’t let this latest extended absence get to him. “It hasn’t been frustrating at all,” he said. “My biggest thing I did this year is just keep my head where my feet is. Can’t worry about the games I missed or the time I missed. You can’t look back in the past. You just got to focus on the present.” So what will be in store for Hall once he makes his return? Prior to his injury, the Browns were hopeful the rookie could help fill the void left on the edge when they traded defensive end Za’Darius Smith, floating Hall as an option to play on the edge at times to complement Myles Garrett. Might they try and move him outside against Kansas City? “Yeah, yet to be seen,” defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. “Don’t want to show our cards on any of that stuff, but he has the ability to be able to play inside and outside. We’ll just see where the game plan takes us.” But no matter where the reps come from, the important thing for Hall over these final weeks of 2024 will simply be making the most of each opportunity. He’s played only 101 total defensive snaps so far, not an ideal sample size to evaluate a rookie who you expect to be a key contributor down the line. “I think for any young player, reps are so important,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said. “That’s your resume, is that tape. So excited if Mike can make it back out there because he’s a young player that we’d love to see more of.” Hall said over the last four weeks he’s done his best to remain in shape and keep his endurance up despite the injury. He hopes to continue to show the explosiveness the Browns drafted him for, and to pick up where he left off in Week 9. “People watching or putting on the tape of me, you can just see my explosiveness,” he said. “How much pressure I bring in the pocket. And just my relentless effort, just always rushing and running to the ball.” If activated ahead of this week against the two-time defending Super Bowl champs, he’ll have four more chances to showcase that. Advocates of the Second Amendment are pushing the incoming Trump administration to dismantle anti-gun policies erected by the Biden White House and rein in Washington’s firearms regulatory agency, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Several gun groups have asked President-elect Donald Trump to abolish the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention when he returns to the Oval Office. Trump is expected to comply. Lawrence Keane, the senior vice president and general counsel of the National Shooting Sports Foundation , the industry representative, said, “Nowhere else, within the U.S. government, are taxpayers forced to fund efforts to denigrate their rights protected by the law. This office was established to appease the special-interest gun control lobby and donors.” Trump is also being pressured to abolish or limit the authority of the ATF. The agency under Biden has become a regulations-heavy anti-gun outfit that targets gun sellers and has been trying to regulate commonly used and owned firearms. In a speech at a National Rifle Association outdoors convention in Pennsylvania earlier this year, Trump promised action. "Every single Biden attack on gun owners and manufacturers will be terminated my very first week back in office, perhaps my first day,” he said. On Capitol Hill, Republicans are feeling more confident they will have a partner in the White House to limit the power of the ATF and the major law it enforces, the National Firearms Act. That act forces the buyers of short-barrelled rifles and suppressors, for example, to register those items and pay a special tax. 🚨 I'm introducing legislation in the next Congress to Abolish the ATF! pic.twitter.com/keK0zpmhRJ — Rep. Eric Burlison (@RepEricBurlison) Rep. Eric Burlison, (R-MO) told Secrets on Thursday that he plans to offer legislation to kill the NFA and abolish the ATF. Both are uphill battles, but he said he and others joining him feel confident they will make advances against the anti-gun forces. “I think that the odds are good that we at least move the ball,” Burlison said. He succeeded as a Missouri legislator in changing several gun laws in the Show Me State, and he plans to follow that path of educating Washington lawmakers on how changing the ATF or federal gun laws will be a positive thing for liberty. Mark Oliva, the spokesman for NSSF, said the group is eager to see a change in anti-gun attitudes at the ATF and in Washington. “NSSF believes the ATF needs a course correction. The next ATF director should serve the public by dedicating the agency’s resources to targeting, arresting, and bringing to justice those criminals who illegally traffic firearms and threaten community safety,” he said. Gun advocates are also eager for Trump to name a pro-gun ATF director. One name spreading like wildfire on social media is of the “AK Guy,” Brandon Herrera, a firearm maker and YouTube sensation. In a new video, he acknowledged those supporting him and admitted it would be ironic if he got the job. One reason: He wants to abolish the ATF. Herrera, who ran for Congress in the Texas primaries this year, said he would be an unlikely choice, though Trump has been picking Cabinet secretaries who have said critical things of the agencies they would run. “This would be one of the most legendary appointments Donald Trump has ever made,” Herrera said on his YouTube channel. SEE THE LATEST POLITICAL NEWS AND BUZZ FROM WASHINGTON SECRETS But even killing the agency, he and others said, will not address the anti-gun legislation that ATF enforces. That job would likely shift to the FBI, which even fewer gun advocates want. “Abolishing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives will not solve the problems. The underlying laws and regulations will still be there and transferred to a bigger and more well funded agency like the FBI with more manpower to enforce them. Be careful for what you wish for,” warned Alan M. Gottlieb , the founder of the Second Amendment Foundation.ROME (AP) — Robert Lewandowski joined Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the only players in Champions League history with 100 or more goals. But Erling Haaland is on a faster pace than anyone by boosting his total to 46 goals at age 24 on Tuesday. Still, Haaland's brace wasn't enough for Manchester City in a 3-3 draw with Feyenoord that extended the Premier League champion's winless streak to six matches. Lewandowski’s early penalty kick started Barcelona off to a 3-0 win over previously unbeaten Brest to move into second place in the new single-league format. The Poland striker added goal No. 101 in second-half stoppage time. Ronaldo leads the all-time scoring list with 140 goals and Messi is next with 129. But neither Ronaldo nor Messi play in the Champions League anymore following moves to Saudi Arabia and the United States, respectively. “It’s a nice number,” Lewandowski said. “In the past I didn’t think I could score more than 100 goals in the Champions League. I’m in good company alongside Cristiano and Messi.” The 36-year-old Lewandowski required 125 matches to reach the century mark, two more than Messi (123) and 12 fewer than Ronaldo (137). Barcelona also got a second-half score from Dani Olmo. The top eight finishers in the standings advance directly to the round of 16 in March. Teams ranked ninth to 24th go into a knockout playoffs round in February, while the bottom 12 teams are eliminated. Haaland has 46 goals in 44 games Haaland converted a first-half penalty to eclipse Messi as the youngest player to reach 45 goals then scored City's third after the break to raise his total to 46 goals in 44 games. Ilkay Gundogan had City's second. But then Feyenoord struck back with goals from Anis Hadj Moussa, Santiago Gimenez and David Hancko. Inter leads standings and hasn't conceded a goal Inter Milan beat Leipzig 1-0 with an own goal to move atop the standings with 13 points, one more than Barcelona and Liverpool, which faces Real Madrid on Wednesday. The Serie A champion is the only club that hasn't conceded a goal. Bayern Munich beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 — the same score from the 2020 final between the two teams. PSG ended with 10 men and remained in the elimination zone. The French powerhouse has struggled in Europe after Kylian Mbappe’s move to Real Madrid. Kim Min-jae’s first-half header was enough for Bayern, especially after Ousmane Dembelé was sent off in the 56th with his second yellow. Atalanta moved within two points of the lead with a 6-1 win at Young Boys. Charles De Ketelaere scored two and assisted on three other goals for Atalanta. Also, Arsenal kept red-hot striker Viktor Gyokeres quiet in a 5-1 win over Sporting Lisbon; and Germany star Florian Wirtz scored two goals and was involved in two more as Bayer Leverkusen boosted its chances of finishing in the top eight with a 5-0 rout of Salzburg. AC Milan follows up win over Real Madrid with another victory AC Milan followed up its win at Real Madrid with a 3-2 victory at last-place Slovan Bratislava in an early match. Christian Pulisic put the seven-time champion ahead midway through the first half by finishing off a counterattack. Then Rafael Leao restored the Rossoneri’s advantage after Tigran Barseghyan had equalized for Bratislava and Tammy Abraham quickly added another. Nino Marcelli scored with a long-range strike in the 88th for Bratislava, which ended with 10 men. Bratislava has lost all five of its matches. Alvarez and Griezmann lead Atletico to 6-0 rout Argentina World Cup winner Julian Alvarez scored twice and Atletico Madrid routed Sparta Prague 6-0 in the other early game. Alvarez scored with a free kick 15 minutes in and Marcos Llorente added a long-range strike before the break. Alvarez finished off a counterattack early in the second half after being set up by substitute Antoine Griezmann, who then marked his 100th Champions League game by getting on the scoresheet himself. Angel Correa added a late brace for Atletico, which earned its biggest away win in Europe. Atletico beat Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round and extended its winning streak across all competitions to six matches. ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer Andrew Dampf, The Associated Press
