The start of a new year can bring a surge of motivation around setting new goals, including financial resolutions. One way to help those goals become reality, financial experts say, is to make them as specific as possible. Then, track your progress, while allowing flexibility for unexpected challenges. “It’s easier to track progress when we know where we are going,” says Sylvie Scowcroft, a certified financial planner and founder of The Financial Grove in Cambridge, Massachusetts. That’s why she encourages her clients to set clearly defined goals, often related to paying off a specific debt, saving a certain amount per month or improving their credit score. Here are more tips from financial experts about crafting 2025 financial goals : Pick your top priorities Trying to accomplish too much can feel overwhelming. Instead, pick your priorities, says Cathleen Tobin, CFP and owner of Moonbridge Financial Design in Rhinebeck, New York. She suggests focusing on those big, often emotionally-driven goals to find motivation. “It’s more compelling than just a number,” she says. For example, do you want to make sure you’re on track for retirement or save money for a house? “Start there.” Be as specific as possible Scowcroft says she sees clients get tripped up by selecting overly broad goals, such as “get better with money.” Instead, she encourages people to select specific action items, such as “sign up for a budgeting tool and set aside time each month to learn where my money is going.” That level of specificity provides direction so you know what steps to take next, she adds. For example, if your top priority is to become debt-free, then your specific goal might be to pay off an extra $200 of your debt balance each month. Tobin says labeling savings accounts so they correspond with goals can also help. An emergency fund could be named something like “Peace of mind in 2025,” so you remember why you’re saving every time you make a transfer. “It’s more motivating than just ‘emergency fund,’” Tobin says. Track your progress Measuring your progress as the year unfolds is also a critical component of successful goal setting, Tobin says. She compares it to weight loss. If you want to lose 20 pounds by June, then you need to lose about a pound a week for the first six months of the year. Similarly, she says it helps to break savings goals into microsteps that specify what you need to do each week. Schedule a weekly or monthly check-in with yourself to make sure you are meeting those smaller goals along the way. You might want to review your debt payoff progress or check your credit score , for example. “Being able to break it down into steps that can be done each week or twice a month really helps,” Tobin says. Automate where you can If your goal is to save more money , then setting up an automatic transfer each month can help turn that goal into reality, as long as you know you have the money in your checking account to spare. “It reduces the mental load,” says Mike Hunsberger, CFP and owner of Next Mission Financial Planning in St. Charles, Missouri, where he primarily supports veterans and current members of the military. He recommends starting small to ease into the change. “I wouldn’t jump to double what you’re currently saving,” he says. For example, when it comes to saving in a retirement account, if you’re starting with a 3% contribution, you might want to bump it up to 4%, then slowly increase it from there. “My number one piece of advice is to start small, but make sure you scale over time,” Hunsberger adds. “Because it’s gradual, you probably won’t notice it impacting your lifestyle.” Adjust as needed “Stay flexible,” Scowcroft says. “Part of it is just being kind to yourself and not being too rigid.” When unexpected challenges come up, such as a big unplanned expense, you might have to pause making progress on your goal and reset. You might even need to change your goal. Scowcroft says that doesn’t mean you “failed,” just that life changed your plans. Dwelling on any negativity won’t help your forward progress. Team up with a friend Sharing your goals with a friend can also make it easier to reach them, Scowcroft says. “It really helps to have an accountability buddy,” she says. She suggests putting a regular “money date” with your friend on the calendar so you can ask each other how you’re doing, brainstorm any challenges or even budget together side-by-side . “It’s a fun excuse to meet up with a friend.” More From NerdWallet Cage-Free Egg Supply Takes Outsized Hit As Bird Flu Surges 4 Ways to Hit Your Family Savings Goals in 2025 What Trended in Personal Finance in 2024? Police record statements over viral prank
In their final fixture of 2024, Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game midway through the opening period. Arsenal’s victory takes them back to within six points of leaders Liverpool, having played one match more than the Reds, and a point clear of Chelsea following their Boxing Day defeat to Fulham. Ipswich, although much improved in the second half, have now lost five of their last six games, and remain just one place off the bottom of the table, three points away from safety. 🎯 pic.twitter.com/hDd5bkHwXr — Arsenal (@Arsenal) December 27, 2024 Mikel Arteta’s men have been rocked by Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury which could keep the England winger, who has nine goals and 13 assists this season, out of action for the next two months. Gabriel Martinelli was handed the unenviable task of filling Saka’s shoes on Arsenal’s right-hand side and the Brazilian was involved in the only goal of the evening. The Ipswich defence failed to deal with Martinelli’s cross, with the ball falling to Leandro Trossard on the opposite side of the area. Trossard fought his way to the byline before fizzing his cross into the box for Havertz to convert from a matter of yards. It was Havertz’s third goal in four matches, his 12th of the season, and no less than the hosts, who at that stage of the match had enjoyed a staggering 91.4 per cent of the possession, deserved. Heading into Friday’s fixture, Arsenal had lost only one of their last 75 Premier League games when they had opened the scoring, and their triumph here rarely looked in doubt following Havertz’s strike. Three points that take Arsenal into second 🪜 #ARSIPS pic.twitter.com/Dx3s6XlwQ2 — Premier League (@premierleague) December 27, 2024 Havertz thought he had doubled Arsenal’s lead with 34 minutes gone when he converted Gabriel Jesus’ cross. But Jesus – handed his third successive start for the first time in a year – strayed into an offside position in the build-up. When referee Darren England blew for half-time, Ipswich had failed to touch the ball in Arsenal’s box, becoming just the second side to do so in the Premier League this season. Nottingham Forest were the other, away at Liverpool, before they went on to inflict Arne Slot’s sole defeat of his tenure so far. And for all of Arsenal’s possession, while they held just a one-goal advantage, Ipswich knew they were still in the game. An encouraging start to the second half for the Tractor Boys ensued, albeit without testing David Raya in the Arsenal goal. Shortly after the hour mark, Gabriel should have settled any growing Emirates nerves when he arrived unmarked to Declan Rice’s corner, but the defender headed wide of Arijanet Muric’s post when it looked easier to score. Just over an hour on the clock. #ARSIPS pic.twitter.com/JXNipX1J1Z — IPSWICH TOWN (@IpswichTown) December 27, 2024 Martin Odegaard then forced a fine fingertip save from Muric at his near post after a mazy run and shot from the Arsenal skipper. Rice’s stinging goal-bound volley from the following corner was blocked by Dara O’Shea as Arsenal pushed for a game-killing second. Havertz should have tapped home Trossard’s header but he fluffed his lines. And moments later, substitute Mikel Merino’s effort was diverted from danger by a diving Muric. Ipswich looked to catch Arsenal on the counter, but the match ended without them registering a single effort on Raya’s goal. Ipswich fans goaded their opponents with chants of “boring, boring Arsenal”, but it was the Gunners who enjoyed the last laugh as they saw out 2024 with a win which keeps the pressure on Liverpool.Union Minister of Rural Development and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan will launch the third edition of Nayi Chetna – Pahal Badlaav Ki, a national campaign against gender-based violence on 25th November 2024 in Rang Bhawan Auditorium, All India Radio, Sansad Marg, New Delhi. EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings waived cornerback Akayleb Evans on Saturday in another setback for their beleaguered 2022 draft class. Evans started 15 games last season, but he had been relegated to a special teams role this year after the Vikings added veteran cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore and Shaquill Griffin. Evans was a fourth-round pick out of Missouri, one of three defensive backs among Minnesota's first five selections in 2022. Lewis Cine (first round) was waived and Andrew Booth (second round) was traded earlier this year. One of their second-round picks, guard Ed Ingram, lost his starting spot last week. Evans was let go to clear a roster spot for tight end Nick Muse, who was activated from injured reserve to play on Sunday at Chicago. The Vikings ruled tight end Josh Oliver out of the game with a sprained ankle. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLWESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — The Lewis County Senior Center will host its second annual Chili Cook-off on Wednesday, Jan. 22, offering a chance for residents to showcase their culinary skills or enjoy a warm, community-focused event. The cookoff is free to attend and open to the public, making it an ideal outing for families and friends. For those interested in competing, there is no cost to enter. Participants are encouraged to bring their best chili recipes, whether classic favorites or new creations to share with the community. Judging will begin promptly at noon that Wednesday. Attendees who purchase a $5 tasting ticket will serve as judges, ensuring a fun and interactive experience for everyone involved, according to event organizers. Belinda Lewis, activities director at the Lewis County Senior Center, shared her enthusiasm for the event, noting that last year’s inaugural cookoff was a resounding success. “It went really well last year, and so I decided to try and make it bigger and better this year,” she said. She emphasized the event’s importance not only as a culinary competition but also as a social gathering. “I am hoping that the word got out last year that it was really fun and successful and it was just a really good time,” she said. “Not only did people bring in their chili and taste the other chili, but it was really a social event too because they sat around, joked, and, as an activities director, that is what I am looking for — things that bring people together and put them in social situations.” All money that will be raised during the chili cook-off will go towards benefiting the Lewis County Senior Center, Lewis said. “The money raised will go towards our activities,” she said. “Of course we want to offer some kind of prize for the first- and second-place finishers. Last year, I found these tiny chef’s hats and it said, “chili cook-off first place, second place and third place,’ and that is what we used as prizes. Part of the money will go towards the prizes we want to give out this year, and the other half will go towards our activities for the seniors.” Weston’s Lynn Lynch, last year’s first-place winner, reflected on her positive experience at the first Chili Cook-off. “My experience was great,” she said. “I just cooked my homemade chili and won first place. I am known for my chili and lasagna. But this was my first time ever winning first place at a cook-off.” She emphasized the importance of the Senior Center hosting events like the Chili Cook-off for the community, Lynch said. “It’s just a fun way of making money, getting to meet other people, and I would do anything for Belinda Lewis,” she said. “Any time you break bread with someone and sit down and share a meal together ... it creates a bond.”Musk's Neuralink to launch feasibility trial with brain implant, robotic armMichigan's defense of national title fell short, aims to cap lost season with win against Ohio State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan's defense of the national championship has fallen woefully short. The Wolverines started the season ranked No. 9 in the AP Top 25 , making them the third college football team since 1991 to be ranked worse than seventh in the preseason poll after winning a national title. Michigan (6-5, 4-4 Big Ten) failed to meet those modest expectations, barely becoming eligible to play in a bowl and putting the program in danger of losing six or seven games for the first time since the Brady Hoke era ended a decade ago. The Wolverines potentially can ease some of the pain with a win against rival and second-ranked Ohio State (10-1, 7-1, No. 2 CFP) on Saturday in the Horseshoe, but that would be a stunning upset. Ohio State is a 21 1/2-point favorite, according to the BetMGM Sportsbook, and that marks just the third time this century that there has been a spread of at least 20 1/2 points in what is known as “The Game.” Michigan coach Sherrone Moore doesn't sound like someone who is motivating players with an underdog mentality. “I don’t think none of that matters in this game,” Moore said Monday. “It doesn’t matter the records. It doesn’t matter anything. The spread, that doesn’t matter.” How did Michigan end up with a relative mess of a season on the field, coming off its first national title since 1997? Winning it all with a coach and star player contemplating being in the NFL for the 2024 season seemed to have unintended consequences for the current squad. The Wolverines closed the College Football Playoff with a win over Washington on Jan. 8; several days later quarterback J.J. McCarthy announced he was skipping his senior season; and it took more than another week for Jim Harbaugh to bolt to coach the Los Angeles Chargers. In the meantime, most quality quarterbacks wanting to transfer had already enrolled at other schools and Moore was left with lackluster options. Davis Warren beat out Alex Orji to be the team's quarterback for the opener and later lost the job to Orji only to get it back again. No matter who was under center, however, would've likely struggled this year behind an offensive line that sent six players to the NFL. The Wolverines lost one of their top players on defense, safety Rod Moore, to a season-ending injury last spring and another one, preseason All-America cornerback Will Johnson, hasn't played in more than a month because of an injury. The Buckeyes are not planning to show any mercy after losing three straight in the series. “We’re going to attack them," Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer said. “We know they’re going to come in here swinging, too, and they’ve still got a good team even though the record doesn’t indicate it. This game, it never matters what the records are." While a win would not suddenly make the Wolverines' season a success, it could help Moore build some momentum a week after top-rated freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan. “You come to Michigan to beat Ohio,” said defensive back Quinten Johnson, intentionally leaving the word State out when referring to the rival. "That's one of the pillars of the Michigan football program. “It doesn’t necessarily change the fact of where we are in the season, but it definitely is one of the defining moments of your career here at Michigan.” AP Sports Writer Mitch Stacy in Columbus, Ohio, contributed to this report. AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-pollOver 50 lakh BSES consumers in the national capital can expect substantially lower electricity bills for at least the next three months. This has been made possible by the regulator, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), slashing the power purchase adjustment cost (PPAC), which is levied on the consumers. With the Assembly election due in February next year, the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took credit for the development. While Delhi’s main Opposition party, which has been agitating for a reduction in the PPAC, said its “struggle has borne fruit”, Chief Minister Atishi, who also holds the Power portfolio, said the move was “made possible due to the honest, people-centric governance of AAP”. The PPAC, which is revised every quarter, is a surcharge that increases or decreases depending on the prevailing prices of fuel, such as coal and gas, used in power generation. It is calculated and charged on the fixed and variable parts of the bill, depending on monthly consumption. These two components, along with some minor charges, comprise the total bill. The DERC uploaded two orders dated December 20 on its website, stating that the PPAC levied by BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) and BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) had been reduced. The reduction in bills has been made possible due to the honest and people-centric governance of the Aam Aadmi Party, said CM and Power Minister Atishi. | Photo Credit: ANI According to officials, BYPL has reduced the surcharge from 37.75% to 13.63% and BRPL from 35.83% to 18.19%. The reduced rates will be applicable from December 21 to March 20. BSES supplies electricity in most parts of south, west, east, and central Delhi. Other discoms in the city slashed their PPAC surcharge earlier this year, sources said. ‘AAP’s collusion’ Reacting to the move, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said, “The ongoing struggle of the party’s Delhi unit since April this year has finally borne fruit.” He added, “The Power Department has declared more than 50% reduction in PPAC, which had been arbitrarily imposed on Delhi residents by the (AAP chief and former Delhi CM) Arvind Kejriwal government in collusion with private power companies.” “Soon, when the BJP forms the government (in Delhi), this 10-year-long loot by the Kejriwal government and private companies would be referred to the CBI for investigation,” he added. The BJP had staged protests outside the offices of power discoms in the city in July, seeking a reduction in electricity bills and the rollback of recent hikes in PPAC. ‘Proper management’ Taking credit for the reduction, the CM said, “It is only through proper management of the power supply chain and pre-planning that the Delhi government has been able to achieve this.” She added that the electricity situation in the Capital is much better than in the neighbouring cities of Noida and Gurugram. “The residents of those cities are charged high tariffs while also experiencing frequent power cuts during summer,” she said. “In Delhi, on the other hand, people enjoy 24-hour power supply and, in many cases, zero electricity bills due to our policies,” the CM added. Consider, for example, how a recipe can be ruined by straying too far from its original list of ingredients -- nobody wants a milkshake made with a heaping helping of brussels sprouts , right? Similarly, investing doesn't have to be complicated. Indeed, by allocating large portions of a portfolio to funds that track major indexes, investors can feel secure knowing that their portfolio will largely capture the stock market's growth. Let's have a closer look at one excellent index-linked exchange-traded fund (ETF) and see if it could be a millionaire-maker. What is the Invesco QQQ Trust Series I ETF? In the simplest terms, the Invesco QQQ Trust Series I ETF (NASDAQ: QQQ ) is an index-linked ETF that tracks the Nasdaq 100 index . That index, in turn, is made up of the 100 largest non-financial stocks that are listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange . QQQ Total Return Level data by YCharts. Many of the stocks in the index are the mega-cap tech stocks you might expect to find: Nvidia , Microsoft , Apple , and Amazon . However, there are also much smaller, less well-known names like Ansys , MongoDB , and The Trade Desk . Finally, there are also companies from outside the tech sector, such as Starbucks , Kraft Heinz , and AstraZeneca . All in all, this fund offers investors the opportunity to own a broad array of stocks representing many sectors (except for financials ). Granted , the index is heavily skewed toward the tech industry, with roughly 59% of holdings falling within that sector. Yet, given tech's outperformance over the last few decades, investors should ask themselves: Is it a bad thing to be relatively overweight in the tech sector over the long term? I would suggest -- particularly for younger investors -- that it is not. In fact, staying slightly overweight in the tech sector could prove to be a millionaire-making move. Here's why. Large investments in the tech sector have paid off Let's compare the relative performance across four index-linked ETFs: The Invesco QQQ Trust Series I, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust , the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF , and the iShares Russell 2000 ETF . QQQ Total Return Level data by YCharts. As you can see, over the last five years, the Invesco fund has significantly outperformed the other funds with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.5%. What's more, the difference is even more pronounced if we examine the last 15 years -- starting with the end of the Great Recession bear market, which occurred in March 2009. QQQ Total Return Level data by YCharts. Indeed, $50,000 invested in the Invesco fund in March 2009 would have grown to over $1 million today. In comparison, the same amount, invested on the same day, would have grown to only $560,000 in the S&P 500 fund, $454,000 in the Dow fund, and less than $386,000 in the Russell fund. The lesson? Even with near-perfect timing and very similar index-linked ETF funds, there is an enormous amount of difference in performance among these funds -- and the tech-heavy Invesco fund has proven to be the best. All that said, there is no guarantee that the Invesco fund will continue its outperformance. After all, there were periods, such as the dot-com bubble of 2001-2003, where tech stocks severely underperformed the broader market. However, even with that turbulent period included, the Invesco fund has ever-so-slightly exceeded the performance of its major index rivals since the start of this century. QQQ Total Return Level data by YCharts. No investment is a sure thing, but index-linked ETFs are about as close as you can find . They offer investors a broad range of stocks and have a proven track record of delivering real returns over decades. Moreover, the tech-heavy nature of the Invesco fund offers investors a realistic chance to outperform the market, given the high growth and solid profitability of many of its major components. Investors looking for a smart and simple way to grow their portfolio to over $1 million should consider the Invesco fund.

After struggling to match the Italian physicality and cope with their defensive pressure the All Blacks reverted to their dominant scrum and maul to squeeze out an underwhelming win that improved Robertson’s maiden season at the helm to 10-4 (71% win ratio). Emerging from a deflating defeat against France in Paris last week, the All Blacks bookended their gruelling five-match northern tour by evoking more questions than answers. With the end in sight maybe the All Blacks hit the wall. Maybe they should have introduced more fresh legs and fringe players. On the basis of this performance, though, the All Blacks need serious improvements – none more so than with protecting their ruck ball. Leading 17-6 after a sloppy first half the All Blacks largely fumbled and bumbled their way to the finish. Mark Tele’a’s 70th-minute try marked the first points of the second spell and while Beauden Barrett’s late strike blew out the margin, the All Blacks’ inability to assert their authority is the overarching theme of this contest. That the All Blacks had to survive two yellow cards – one to Scott Barrett for a first-half croc roll cleanout and Anton Lienert-Brown copping the second following repeat team infringements while defending their line – reflects the intense pressure they endured. Mark Tele’a dots down to score the All Blacks' third try of the match. Photo / Photosport The All Blacks’ skill execution, discipline, lineout, carry and clean in the collisions were all well short of standards. Wallace Sititi, Will Jordan and Cam Roigard impressed at times and Asafo Aumua added notable impact from the bench. Otherwise, though, there were few positives for the All Blacks. It’s difficult to gauge Gonzalo Quesada’s Italian team. After a memorable Six Nations that included wins over Scotland and Wales a draw with France, Italy were humbled 50-18 by the Pumas before battling to a 20-17 win against Georgia this month. On this occasion, though, as they welcomed the All Blacks to the home of the Juventus football club for their debut in Turin, Italy fronted with passionate intent throughout. For all their fight and heart Italy fully deserved Tommaso Menoncello’s late try that temporarily offered hope. Italy succeeded by dragging the All Blacks into a dogfight. Their physicality, defensive line speed and breakdown pressure caused the All Blacks major frustrations to turn the contest into a slow, scrappy spectacle that suited Italy’s objectives to stay in the fight. Plagued by poor ruck presentation and cleanouts that have haunted them in recent weeks, the All Blacks struggled to develop phase play continuity and build consistent pressure. While Ethan de Groot’s return led an utterly dominant scrum platform, frustrations built elsewhere with the All Blacks lineout misfiring badly on their ball to lose three throws. All Blacks captain Barrett’s yellow card for a croc roll cleanout – deemed to have threatened his opponent’s knees/lower limbs by shifting excess weight on this area – pushed his side further on the back foot. Barrett’s exit did not, however, cost the All Blacks any points. Roigard, despite dealing with bobbling ball at the base and Italian defenders manhandling him, eventually provided the brief spark with a trademark snipe to claim the opening try. Sam Cane salutes the crowd after playing his final game for New Zealand. Photo / Photosport Even then, though, the All Blacks lacked patience and variety on attack. Before Jordan finally released the shackles late in the half with the second strike the All Blacks were guilty of forcing passes and failing to finish rare line breaks. The introduction of the All Blacks bench injected much-needed impact but it wasn’t enough to deliver a definitive statement. When the time comes to reflect the All Blacks will note they were one point short of an unbeaten northern tour. Such a haul would have projected a narrative of progress and positivity. In the end, though, Robertson’s first season will be difficult to assess. Their 14th and final performance of the year leaves the lasting impression of uncertainty about where they stand. Vikings waive former starting cornerback Akayleb Evans in another blow to 2022 draft classFor the second straight season, the Robert Bateman Timberwolves senior varsity football team has been bounced from the playoffs by the Windsor Wolves. Windsor again transformed into Bateman's kryptonite with a 44-28 win inside BC Place in the AA semifinal on Saturday (Nov. 23). Bateman entered the game with a perfect record, but several key defensive coverage breakdowns at inopportune moments led to the loss. . hit the field at . AA semifinal kicking off soon, Bateman vs Windsor One of those breakdowns occurred on Windsor's opening drive when running back Brady Smith broke for about 60 yards to make it 7-0 in the first. The Timberwolves eventually responded late in the first when Cade Handy put the team on his back with a number of big rushes downfield. He capped the drive off with a short rushing touchdown. caps off a drive that saw him with two other big rushes. Extra point no good, Windsor up 7-6 with 35 seconds left in 1Q The following drive saw Smith again break free for another 60-yard plus major and a two-point convert gave Windsor a 15-6 lead early in the second. The Timberwolves had a good opportunity to score again when the defence hemmed Windsor inside their own 20, but a poor kick-off return and then a fumble by the offence erased that chance. Bateman then got the ball back after a Windsor receiver lost the ball, nothing came of that drive, but the defence again trapped Windsor and this time the Timberwolves took advantage. Dante Meyer had an excellent kick-off return and allowed the offence to start at the Windsor 15. A few plays later it was Jackson Kliewer who pounded the ball in to make it 15-13 with 19 seconds left in the half. Kliewer pounds the ball in from the one, extra point is good. Windsor up 15-13 with 19 seconds left in 2Q The ensuring kick-off saw Bateman go for a squib kick, which seemed to freeze Windsor and the available ball was scooped up smartly by Bateman's Caleb Mills. A deep passing attempt followed by a pass interference call on Windsor put Bateman in the red zone with 11 seconds left in the half. Bateman went for one passing play, called a time-out and went for a field goal attempt to escape the first half with the led. Unfortunately for them, the kick was no good and they finished the first half down 15-13. Field goal way off, score is 15-13 Windsor at half The teams traded scoring drives to open the second half, with Windsor quarterback Emmet Ward calling his own number and Kliewer adding another major. Windsor led 22-20 with 5:13 left in the third. Kliewer runs in the TD after a good drive by Bateman, Windsor up 22-20 with 5:39 left in 3Q Bateman was then victimized by another busted coverage play, but this time it was in the secondary as Ward found a wide open Smith who went about 60 yards. The Timberwolves offence began to sputter and Windsor scored with another big passing play to take a 37-20 lead with 10:34 left. The next drive saw a costly fumble by the Timberwolves and Windsor again capitalized with a big passing play to go up 44-20 with four minutes left. Handy added a late touchdown to make it a 44-28 final. Bateman head coach David Mills said it was close for most of the game, but Bateman's defensive breakdowns led to big plays for Windsor. "The first half was a couple of run plays that burned us and the second half was passing plays," he said. "It was busted coverage, but for the most part we held their passing game in check." He admitted that the team did a lot of preparation in trying to prevent Windsor quarterback Emmet Ward from running on them. They did manage to limit his rushing production, but running back Brady Smith stepped up. Ward also got his passing game going in the second half. "He was the offensive player of the conference for a reason," Mills said. He added that costly penalties also slowed down some of Bateman's drives. Mills also admitted that he was aiming to score a touchdown to close the first half, but had to settle for a field goal which ultimately was unsuccessful. Despite the loss, Mills said it was a good year overall and next season will see a number of junior varsity players move up and mature. The Bateman junior varsity team plays for a provincial title at BC Place on Friday (Nov. 29). "Obviously you want to win a game like today but it's been a great year and I want to thank all the parents, family, media and volunteers for all the work they did," he said. Windsor will now play the Vernon Panthers in the AA provincial final at BC Place on Saturday (Nov. 30).Daniel Jones is free to sign with any NFL team after clearing waivers on Monday, which also means the team that signs the former New York Giants quarterback won't be on the hook for the nearly $12 million that was remaining on his contract this year or his $23 million injury guarantee. Jones was released at his request by the Giants on Saturday after the former first-round pick was benched last week. He reportedly wants to join a contender, and there are expected to be multiple teams interested. The two teams reported to have the most initial interest in Jones are also being offered as the most likely to sign him by one sportsbook. The Baltimore Ravens currently have journeyman backup Josh Johnson behind starting quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jones would potentially provide a third option, and one whose mobility could make him an intriguing fit in offensive coordinator Todd Monken's system The Ravens were installed as the 2/1 favorites to land Jones ahead of the Minnesota Vikings (5/2), who have veterans Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien behind starter Sam Darnold. They would likely view Jones as an upgrade. "I really can't get into too much about any short-term or long-term," Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday when asked about Jones, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. "I can just say that I've been a big fan of Daniel's for a long time and I hope wherever his next step takes him, it's a good opportunity for him." The Las Vegas Raiders (5/1) don't fall into the category of contenders after falling to 2-9 amid a seven-game losing streak. However, they could provide the most immediate opportunity to play with Gardner Minshew suffering a season-ending broken collarbone on Sunday that is expected to end his season. Second-year quarterback Aidan O'Connell is close to returning from a thumb injury, but coach Antonio Pierce acknowledged after Sunday's game that, "We're going to need somebody, right?" If O'Connell isn't ready to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Black Friday, Desmond Ridder is expected to get the start. The Dallas Cowboys (7/1) would fall into a similar category, with Dak Prescott out for the season following hamstring surgery and being replaced by Cooper Rush. Another intriguing possibility lies with Detroit, where the 10-1 Lions' offense is rolling with Jared Goff at the helm. However, should he go down to injury the only other quarterback on the roster is rookie Hendon Hooker. That has contributed to the Lions having 7/1 odds to sign Jones.
