( ) shares have taken a nosedive in 2024 and are down 30% this year to date. Chief to the downsides has been the price of lithium, which itself recently hit multi-year lows, before retracing higher to CNY 79,050 per tonne at the time of writing. Pilbara shares have also been some of the most heavily on the ASX this year. Those betting on the stock price to fall have profited handsomely as a result. But now the tide may be turning on those with short bets on the lithium miner. Reports suggest that investors may be starting to unwind this trade, potentially in search of new ideas. Let's take a closer look. Pilbara Minerals shares heavily shorted A quick glance at the list of most shorted stocks throughout 2024 will see Pilbara Minerals shares in the top 10 for most of the year. As a reminder, short selling to profit when share prices are declining, unlike 'going long', which means profiting from rising share prices. As of Monday this week, it was , with nearly 18% of shares outstanding considered to be sold short. With lithium prices potentially finding a bottom and Pilbara down sharply this year, reports suggest the bet against the miner could be reversing. Hedge funds, which can go both long and short stocks, have off the table, according to How do we know? Well, whilst about 18% of the company's shares were shorted last week, this is down from 22% back in August. Could these funds be seeking out their next opportunities? It's not entirely clear, but if the trend continues, this may or may not be good news for Pilbara Minerals shares. Time will tell. Pilbara above $3 per share? Brokers are fairly for Pilbara shares. UBS is in the bearish crowd, rating the stock a sell with a $2.35 price target. Meanwhile, Bell Potter is a hold, valuing the business at $2.95 per share. Both brokers cite the fundamentals of the underlying lithium market as causes for concern in their investment theses. But if lithium prices begin to curl higher, is this good news for Pilbara Minerals shares? Morgans thinks so. It rates the stock a buy with a $3.25 price target, noting an uptick in lithium demand could be positive for Pilbara. Time will tell if the lithium miner can nudge back to these levels. Foolish takeout Pilbara Minerals shares have been heavily shorted this year, but the tides might be starting to turn. What impact this will have on the long-term outlook of the stock isn't clear. What will have more of a bearing is the actual performance of the business relative to the lithium market.

Hello, Reader. Imagine sitting across from your chess opponent, watching them contemplate their next move. While time keeps ticking, you wish there was some kind of way to map out their every possible move. What if I told you that’s not just a daydream anymore? And that there’s a computer able to simulate millions of potential scenarios simultaneously , mapping out strategies you haven’t even considered? With this week’s release of Alphabet Inc. ’s ( GOOGL ) latest quantum chip – called Willow – instantly winning at chess may now be a reality (if it isn’t considered cheating). But for Willow, chess is light work. This chip – and others like it coming down the pike – are game-changers with the potential to reshape entire industries. Willow’s computing power is so massive that it can complete a complex computation in under five minutes – a task that would take the current fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years. That’s 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years – which is longer than the universe has existed! Willow isn’t just powerful – it’s smarter, too. For the first time, we now have a quantum chip that becomes more precise as it scales up. And sectors I’ve been watching closely – like artificial intelligence and healthcare – may experience literal quantum leaps due to this technological development. So in today’s Smart Money , I’ll break down exactly why Google’s quantum chip announcement is so groundbreaking, and what it means for healthcare and AI. Then, I’ll let you in on how this advancement may impact your investment strategy going forward... Especially as we continue on the road to artificial general intelligence, or AGI. Let’s dive in... A Quantum Crash Course In classical computing, machines translate whatever you ask of it into binary code – a language of 0s and 1s. These connected codes form bits that represent individual symbols or patterns. On the other hand, quantum computing uses principles of quantum mechanics to solve complex problems through quantum bits, or qubits. The difference between bits and qubits lies in how information is processed: Where a regular bit can only be 0 or 1, a qubit can exist as both 0 and 1 simultaneously. Now, if you’re still with me, this unique ability to exist in multiple states at once allows quantum computers to generate many solutions at the same time. This dramatically broadens computational possibilities. Additionally, one overarching challenge in quantum computing has been that as more qubits are used, more errors occur. This potentially undermines the quantum advantage. But remarkably, Willow has reversed this trend. The more qubits used in this quantum chip, according to the researchers at Google, the more errors are reduced . All of this to say, Willow can create almost limitless opportunities in many areas. And one of them is healthcare. In a Smart Money from earlier this year , I highlighted the idea of a “takeover boom” that is reshaping the pharmaceutical landscape. To fast-track drug development cycles, larger firms are acquiring small biotech companies that have discovered promising new therapies. Thanks to Willow, drug discovery and development will get a whole lot faster. According to Dr. Lara Jehi, chief research information officer at Cleveland Clinic, there are three pillars of quantum computing, each with transformative potential for biomedical discovery... Now, the reality is that we really have no idea yet how quantum computing and healthcare might interact. However, Willow’s capabilities will almost certainly help companies in the forefront of biopharma research grow tremendously. These are the very type of healthcare companies that I recommend at Fry’s Investment Report . If you’re interested in staying updated on the healthcare stocks in my Fry’s Investment Report portfolio in the wake of this quantum technological leap forward, click here to learn more. But healthcare is just the beginning... AGI’s Lightspeed Arrival In Google’s blog introducing Willow, Hartmut Neven, founder and leader at Quantum AI, boldly proclaimed that “advanced AI will significantly benefit from access to quantum computing.” He elaborates by saying that quantum computation will be crucial for tasks classical machines can’t handle – from collecting inaccessible training data to optimizing learning architectures and modeling complex quantum systems. And he’s not wrong. With that in mind, it’s important to note that research shows AI is being adopted by the public faster than previous technological revolutions. A recent study by researchers from the St. Louis Federal Reserve, Vanderbilt University, and Harvard Kennedy School revealed that generative AI has achieved a 39.5% adoption rate in over just two years – well ahead of the 20% adoption rates we saw with the internet and personal computers. Now, add Willow to the equation. We’re talking about a quantum chip that can solve problems in minutes that would take traditional supercomputers 10 septillion years. Suddenly, AI advancements aren’t just possible – they’re practically inevitable. And speaking of an AI inevitability... we’re already quickly heading toward a significant AI milestone. In fact, we could be months, weeks, or even mere days away from achieving artificial general intelligence ( AGI ) . After that happens, we may reach a point of no return where AI will become capable of “generalized” cognitive abilities, achieving superhuman levels of thinking and problem-solving. And I’m tracking this information closely. In fact, you will hear more about my 1,000 day countdown to AGI soon. It’s a comprehensive look at the most important technological revolution of our lifetime. So, stay tuned to learn more about an upcoming free event and a series of special reports for my paid-up Fry’s Investment Report members, where I’ll break down exactly what AGI means for investors... and how to prepare for its quick arrival. ( You can become one of those members by going here. ) Like with quantum computing, we can’t predict what happens after AGI. However, there are certain steps we can take today to help future-proof ourselves for what’s coming next. Moreover, the quality of sleep is just as crucial as the quantity. Adults who struggle with insomnia, sleep apnea, or other sleep disorders may find that they need more hours in bed to achieve the same level of restorative sleep as others. It is essential for individuals with sleep disorders to seek professional help and develop healthy sleep habits to improve their overall sleep quality.

Despite these criticisms, Trump's insistence on fair payment within NATO has resonated with many Americans who feel that the United States has been shouldering an unfair burden for too long. Trump's emphasis on burden-sharing has put pressure on NATO allies to increase their defense spending, with several countries committing to ramping up their investments in response to his calls for greater contributions. While some core themes of the Trump administration, such as nationalist rhetoric and anti-establishment sentiment, may persist in a hypothetical successor, Professor Ouyang cautions against assuming a complete replication of policies. Political strategies must adapt to the current environment, and the specific policy priorities of a new leader could diverge significantly from those of Trump, depending on the circumstances they face.

An international cybercriminal group is alleged to have hacked into the RIBridges portal, compromising personal data of thousands of Rhode Island residents, the state officials revealed on Saturday. The hackers have demanded a ransom, threatening to release the sensitive information otherwise. The breach affects those utilizing state government assistance programs, like SNAP and healthcare through HealthSource RI, according to Governor Dan McKee. The attack was confirmed by the state's vendor, Deloitte, leading the governor to take decisive protective measures, including shutting down the online platform. Residents using the affected services since 2016 could be impacted by this data breach and are being notified with instructions to safeguard their data. The state is investigating the issue and advises using paper applications for new benefit claims until further notice. (With inputs from agencies.)

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A scruffy little fugitive is on the lam again in New Orleans, gaining fame as he outwits a tenacious band of citizens armed with night-vision binoculars, nets and a tranquilizer rifle. Scrim, a 17-pound mutt that’s mostly terrier, has become a folk hero, inspiring tattoos, T-shirts and even a ballad as he eludes capture from the posse of volunteers. And like any antihero, Scrim has a backstory: Rescued from semi-feral life at a trailer park and adopted from a shelter, the dog broke loose in April and scurried around the city until he was cornered in October and brought to a new home. Weeks later, he’d had enough. Scrim leaped out of a second-story window, a desperate act recorded in a now-viral video. Since then, despite a stream of daily sightings, he’s roamed free. The dog’s fans include Myra and Steve Foster, who wrote “Ode to Scrim” to the tune of Ricky Nelson’s 1961 hit, “I’m a Travelin’ Man.” “I’m a travelin’ dog and I’ve made a lot of stops/All over this town...” Leading the recapture effort is Michelle Cheramie, a 55-year-old former information technology professional. She lost everything — home, car, possessions — in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and in the aftermath, found her calling rescuing pets. “I was like, ‘This is what I should be doing,’” Cheramie said. “I was born to rescue.” She launched Zeus’ Rescues, a nonprofit shelter that now averages 600 cat and dog adoptions a year and offers free pet food to anyone who needs it. She helped Scrim find the home he first escaped from. It was Cheramie’s window Scrim leaped from in November. She’s resumed her relentless mission since then, posting flyers on telephone poles and logging social media updates on his reported whereabouts. She’s invested thousands of dollars on wildlife cameras, thermal sensors and other gear. She took a course offered by the San Diego Zoo on the finer points of tranquilizing animals. And she’s developed a network of volunteers — the kind of neighbors who are willing to grid-search a city at 3 a.m. “...And at every stop I own the heart, of at least one lovely ... “ People like writer David W. Brown, who manages a crowd-sourced Google Map of all known Scrim sightings. He says the search has galvanized residents from all walks of life to come together. As they search for Scrim, they hand out supplies to people in need. “Being a member of the community is seeing problems and doing what you can to make life a little better for the people around here and the animals around you,” Brown said. And neighbors like Tammy Murray, who had to close her furniture store and lost her father to Parkinson’s disease. This search, she says, got her mojo back. “Literally, for months, I’ve done nothing but hunt this dog,” said Murray, 53. “I feel like Wile E. Coyote on a daily basis with him.” Murray drives the Zeus’ Rescues’ van towards reported Scrim sightings. She also handles a tactical net launcher, which looks like an oversized flashlight and once misfired, shattering the van’s window as Scrim sped away. After realizing Scrim had come to recognize the sound of the van’s diesel engine, Murray switched to a Vespa scooter, for stealth. “...If you’re ever in the 9th Ward stop and see/My cute little mini poodle ...” Near-misses have been tantalizing. The search party spotted Scrim napping beneath an elevated house, and wrapped construction netting around the perimeter, but an over-eager volunteer broke ranks and dashed forward, leaving an opening Scrim slipped through. Scrim’s repeated escapades have prompted near-daily local media coverage and a devoted online following. Cheramie can relate. “We’re all running from something or to something. He’s doing that too,” she said. Cheramie’s team dreams of placing the pooch in a safe and loving environment. But a social media chorus growing under the hashtag #FreeScrim has other ideas — they say the runaway should be allowed a life of self-determination. The animal rescue volunteers consider that misguided. “The streets of New Orleans are not the place for a dog to be free,” Cheramie said. “It’s too dangerous.” ”... and my Shar-Pei doll down in old Treme/Waits for my return ...” Scrim was a mess when Cheramie briefly recaptured him in October, with matted fur, missing teeth and a tattered ear. His trembling body was scraped and bruised, and punctured by multiple projectiles. A vet removed one, but decided against operating to take out a possible bullet. The dog initially appeared content indoors, sitting in Cheramie’s lap or napping beside her bed. Then while she was out one day, Scrim chewed through a mesh screen, dropped 13 feet to the ground and squeezed through a gap in the fence, trotting away. Murray said Cheramie’s four cats probably spooked him. “I wholeheartedly believe the gangster-ass cats were messing with him,” Murray said. Cheramie thinks they may have gotten territorial. Devastated but undeterred, the pair is reassessing where Scrim might fit best — maybe a secure animal sanctuary with big outdoor spaces where other dogs can keep him company. Somewhere, Murray says, “where he can just breathe and be.” ___ Brook is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative.
