OTTAWA — Pat King, one of the most prominent figures of the 2022 "Freedom Convoy" in Ottawa, has been found guilty on five counts including mischief and disobeying a court order. A judge in an Ottawa courtroom Friday said the Crown proved beyond a reasonable doubt that King was guilty on one count each of mischief, counselling others to commit mischief and counselling others to obstruct police. He was also found guilty of two counts of disobeying a court order. The Alberta resident was found not guilty on three counts of intimidation and one count of obstructing police himself. King could be facing up to 10 years in prison. The sentencing hearing is scheduled to begin on Jan. 16. The Crown is seeking "significant" incarceration time in a penitentiary while the defence wants King to be sentenced to time served and a period of probation. King's attorney Natasha Calvinho said right now she is focused on the sentencing hearing and will determine if any other action, such as an appeal, will be pursued at a later date. Calvinho said she and her client are disappointed with the ruling, but she said it was well reasoned. "I think what the more important takeaway here, and what we've been saying from the very beginning, Mr. King was acquitted of all charges related to inciting any form of violence, specifically intimidation of Ottawa residents," Calvinho said outside the courthouse. "So yes, he was convicted, a couple counts of mischief for his social media posts, as the judge found, and will continue to fight another day." The maximum sentence for mischief in this instance is 10 years. In January 2022 the convoy attracted thousands of demonstrators to Parliament Hill in protest against public-health restrictions, COVID-19 vaccine mandates and the federal government. The event gridlocked downtown streets around Parliament Hill, with area residents complaining about the fumes from diesel engines running non-stop, and unrelenting noise from constant honking of horns and music parties. The federal Liberal government ultimately invoked the Emergencies Act to try and bring an end to the protests, which had expanded to also block several border crossings into the United States. Ottawa Police brought in hundreds of officers from police forces across Canada to force the protest to an end. King's defence argued that King was peacefully protesting during the three-week demonstration and was not a leader of it. But the Crown alleged he was a protest leader who was instrumental to the disruption the protest caused the city and people who lived and worked nearby. The Crown alleged King co-ordinated the honking, ordering protesters to lay on the horn every 30 minutes for 10 minutes at a time and told people to "hold the line" when he was aware police and the city had asked the protesters to leave. The Crown's case relied mainly on King's own videos, which he posted to social media throughout the protest to document the demonstration and communicate with protesters. The court proceedings paused for about 10 minutes when King requested a short "health break" after the first verdicts on the mischief charges were read. Superior Court Justice Charles Hackland described the honking as "malicious conduct" intended to disrupt residents, workers, businesses and others from lawfully enjoying downtown Ottawa. Hackland also said that the videos show King was seen as and accepted the leadership role. He pointed to a quote from King, finding it "hilarious" that residents could not sleep for 10 days as "gleefully" aiding and abetting mischief. This evidence also played a role in determining King's guilt in disobeying a court order and counselling others to do the same. These charges relate to the original Feb. 7, 2022 injunction against using air and train horns in downtown Ottawa which was launched by residents. The city successfully filed a similar injunction days later. As for counselling others to obstruct police, Hackland found King's call to "hold the line" was telling people not to move from the protest site despite police orders. The judge said that phrase can be seen as a greeting between supporters of the convoy protest, but said there was no other logical interpretation in the context of King's videos. In the days before a multi-day police removal operation began, King called on people to link arms and sit down with their backs to police if officers tried to move them. On the intimidation charges, Hackland said that a consistent theme of King's videos were calls to remain peaceful and non-violent. He said that the target was always the federal government and COVID-19 policies, and specific individuals were not targeted by or through King's actions. As for an intimidation charge related to blocking highways, Hackland said that finding guilt in this instance would be an "overly broad" interpretation of the Criminal Code as the blockade was done as part of a political protest, which is protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. His trial was heard over several weeks between May and July. King still has charges of perjury and obstruction of justice that need to be dealt with which is a separate matter stemming from an April 2022 bail review hearing. The tickets were issued after Hill was stopped outside Hard Rock Stadium for allegedly speeding before the Dolphins' season opener on Sept. 8. The stop escalated and an officer pulled Hill from the car, forced him to the ground and handcuffed him. Hill said in a Tuesday post on the social platform X , “Where all the internet cops now”. The Miami-Dade Police said the officers' failure to appear was “an oversight” and “the matter will be handled administratively.” Still, the department defended issuing Hill the tickets. “A citation dismissed due to this reason does not indicate that the citation held no merit,” the agency said in a statement. Story continues below video Police body camera video from the September stop showed Hill appeared to speed past two motorcycle officers who were monitoring traffic on a road outside the stadium. They pulled over his McLaren sports car and one tapped on his window. Hill, 30, handed the officer his driver's license, but told the officer repeatedly, “Don’t knock on my window like that." He then put his window back up. Their verbal exchange escalated and the officers soon pulled him from the car, forcing Hill face-first to the ground. The officers cursed at Hill but he did not resist their physical force or strike at them in the video. He did tell one officer, “Don’t tell me what to do.” Hill was eventually stood up, but then an officer dragged him into a sitting position on the curb after he said a knee injury made that difficult. BOSTON — After weeks of fear and bewilderment about the drones buzzing over parts of New York and New Jersey, elected officials are urging action to identify and stop the mysterious flights. “There’s a lot of us who are pretty frustrated right now,” Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said on “Fox News Sunday.” “'We don’t know’ is not a good enough answer,” he said. National security officials have said the drones don’t appear to be a sign of foreign interference or a public safety threat. But because they can’t say with certainty who is responsible for the sudden swarms of drones over parts of New Jersey, New York and other eastern parts of the U.S. — or how they can be stopped — has led leaders of both political parties to demand better technology and powers to deal with the drones. Sen. Chuck Schumer called Sunday for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to deploy better drone-tracking technology to identify the drones and their operators. “New Yorkers have tremendous questions about it,” Schumer, the Senate Majority leader, told reporters about the drone sightings. “We are going to get the answers for them.” The federal government did little to answer those questions in its own media briefings Sunday morning. “There’s no question that people are seeing drones,” U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. “But I want to assure the American public that we are on it. We are working in close coordination with state and local authorities.” Some of the drones reported above parts of New York and New Jersey have turned out to be “manned aircraft that are commonly mistaken for drones,” Mayorkas said. “We know of no foreign involvement with respect to the sightings in the Northeast. And we are vigilant in investigating this matter.” Last year, federal aviation rules began requiring certain drones to broadcast their remote identification, including the location of their operators. It’s not clear whether that information has been used to determine who is behind the drones plaguing locations over New York and New Jersey. Schumer wants the federal government to use a recently declassified radio wave technology in New York and New Jersey. The radio wave detector can be attached to a drone or airplane and can determine whether another flying object is a bird or a drone, read its electronic registration, and follow it back to its landing place. Schumer said state and local authorities do not have the authority to track drones. On Sunday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said federal officials were sending a drone detection system to the state. “This system will support state and federal law enforcement in their investigations,” Hochul said in a statement. Dozens of mysterious nighttime flights started last month over parts of New Jersey, raising concerns among residents and officials. Part of the worry stems from the flying objects initially being spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. Drones are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use, but they are subject to local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions. Some U.S. political leaders, including Trump, have called for stronger action against these drones, including shooting them down. The N.H. Legislature will begin regular sessions in early January. The Dec. 4 session served an organizational purpose. On Smith’s recommendation, the House voted to establish a standing Housing Committee to consider legislative proposals to boost housing supply, such as changes to zoning rules and grants and low-interest loans to build workforce housing. Increasing the stock of affordable housing in the state, where the median single-family home price has topped $500,000, is something “both sides want,” Smith said. Some 75 percent of New Hampshire voters think their communities need construction of more affordable housing, according to the results of a Saint Anselm College poll conducted in June. As for education funding, by separating this pressing legal matter from incendiary policy issues that tend to devolve into heated partisan debate yielding little, if any, meaningful action, the deputy speaker hopes lawmakers can get ahead of the courts. The N.H. Supreme Court on Tuesday heard the state’s appeal of a lower court ruling that New Hampshire’s baseline funding should be about double what it is now. Acting on a lawsuit brought by the ConVal School District, and joined by several others, Rockingham County Superior Court Judge David W. Ruoff ruled last year that the state’s share of per-pupil funding should be at least $7,356. It currently stands at $4,100 of the $20,000 average cost per student. Whether this move will reach the desired goal remains to be seen. Nonetheless, it demonstrates a willingness on the part of lawmakers to get something done on behalf of the residents they represent. Smith told The Sentinel’s Statehouse reporter Rick Green, “The hope is that, having funding focused in one committee, we’ll be more focused on that and not be at odds with each other so often.” While these partisan debates, often dubbed “culture wars,” make good theater, they do little to resolve real problems. The lack of adequate funding of public education is just one of those problems. Smith is hoping that, by narrowing the scope of the issues before them, members of the House Education Committee can “beat the courts” in achieving a funding solution “and save face for the House.” Ultimately, this should mean additional state money will flow to communities — like Charlestown — that need it most. The state’s system of funding public education relies heavily on local property taxpayers, so wealthier communities with high property values generally have an easier time funding public schools than those with lower property values. It’s almost guaranteed that we can look forward to robust debate on these issues at the Statehouse. It’s part of the democratic process. But, in the end, voters would like to see something positive accomplished. And, as we’ve witnessed in this polarized climate, all-or-nothing demands and political grandstanding tend not to solve difficult problems.

Teaching Students To Navigate Code The arrival of AI-generated code has caused many in education to wonder what the future of coding education should be, and even whether we should be teaching coding. I have been recently observing my daughter’s english class. Following up on my previous article about how AI should change computer science and coding education, inspiration may come from an unlikely source - the way we teach english in high school. How are these two things related? AI’s Impact On Computer Science and Coding Education A previous article explored why Computer Science education should change to accomodate AI generated code and coding tools . The key observation is that productive software development (sometimes called prompt driven programming ) now includes AI generating code, with the human reviewing, modifying or otherwise directing further development and refinement. This is not a good match to Computer Science education, particularly in K-12, where the focus is on deep understanding of programming language syntax, structure, and the writing from scratch of precisely correct, small, standalone programs. Where Does English Fit In? The english teaching equivalent of today’s basic coding education would be teaching students how to construct a proper sentence, a proper paragraph, or a well structured essay. But english education is far more than that: We do this because learning a language is a skill not limited to a class or a profession. It is an everyday skill that needs to be applied to read and write emails, interact with co-workers and their written outputs, read newspapers, etc. Even if a job does not require you to write a lot, reading what others have written is a requirement for life. There is a similarity to coding. While coding education can focus heavily on writing, in a professional setting, coders are likely to read many lines of code for every line that they write. But How Does This Work For Code? While there are famous coders that those steeped in the industry know and revere, in general, code authors are not well-known in quite the same way that literary authors are. There are however famous codebases that are open! A great example is the Linux Operating System. It runs around 96% of the world’s top million web servers , not to mention many desktop computers. While the code is open, much like famous works of literature, it is a challenging read without guidance. Reading it however, does give a great insight into how complex software systems are built. There are many other examples, even domain specific ones, and in many programming languages. In 2024, Statistica reported adoption of 3.9 million opern source projects . Foundational software driving core technologies like AI (for example TensorFlow and SciKit Learn) are also open source, as are domain specific powerful tools like DeepChem for scientific applications. There are also numerous discussions, reviews, summaries, commentary, and other artifacts about these software packages also online, much like one would find book reviews. Are There Any Differences? Yes, it is not a perfect analogy. One big difference is that, unlike literary works, software programs are constantly evolving and have many contributors. One can think of it as a book that never ends, with many authors, where characters are removed and storylines end, while new characters enter the story and new storylines begin. In a way it is a like episodes of a famous series, where canon defines the past and logical contradictions are frowned upon, while new stories are added leveraging existing characters and introducing new ones. How Does This Apply To Teaching Coding? The core idea would be that students would “read” a software package, with guidance from a teacher. They may annotate (note to themselves key elements) and discuss the structure of the software and elements they did not understand. They may be required to answer questions to test their understanding not of the syntax but of the purpose, function and overall approach of the software and any tradeoffs made therein.
