“Today is Election Day in Aruba once again. I have spent the past four years and four months on this island and am now experiencing my second parliamentary election due to a government that has already ‘fallen.’ The reasons some within the last coalition decided to pull the plug likely revolve around politics and strategy. Weather the question of what’s best for the people and the island was truly considered in that decision, I have my doubts,” said Jacco Vroegop, director of Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH), in a post on social media. He continued, “Many people in Aruba feel increasingly disconnected from politics. Their biggest concerns today are focused on essential aspects of life, such as the high cost of food, water, and electricity compared to their incomes. Quality education, secure housing—especially for undocumented individuals—and accessible healthcare (with one in five residents being undocumented) are pressing issues. Meanwhile, the lack of discussion about the ‘cost’ of autonomy and the focus on American tourists might be the elephant in the room.” In larger countries, changes in government usually have limited direct impact on institutions such as airports, ports, or hospitals. However, Aruba’s size makes the relationship between institutions and government extremely close. Stability is crucial for maintaining good relationships and coordinating necessary decisions. On the other hand, Vroegop pointed out, control is not always optimal. Both transparent and non-transparent factors related to “friends & family” networks often lead to unhealthy pressures on decision-making and appointments. These networks frequently place loyalists or associates of the government in strategic supervisory roles. While the population or representatives of the Dutch Kingdom may question this occasionally, real change remains challenging. For Aruba’s hospital, it is vital to follow a steady path guided by a clear vision. This means serving everyone who needs care while maintaining financial sustainability and remaining loyal to employees. “We are here for everyone, always—regardless of political affiliation or which government is in power,” Vroegop emphasized. “To demonstrate that we, as humans, must be united—especially when it comes to medical care—we invited all political leaders to show their support for the Aruba Hospital. This resulted in a unique photo taken in front of our hospital,” he shared. Vroegop concluded, “Let the best parties win today. Together with my outstanding team, I am ready to continue working to provide the best possible healthcare for Aruba, ensuring that care remains accessible to all without compromising quality.”The Telegraph's role in the saga has also come under scrutiny, with many staff members feeling betrayed by a publication that they once viewed as a reputable source of journalism. The manner in which Ashworth's dismissal was reported, sensationalized and exaggerated for maximum impact, has irrevocably damaged the trust that many within the club had in the media.

(The Center Square) – A new study that the authors say is intended to enable policymakers, taxpayers and business leaders to gauge how their states’ tax systems compare gives Illinois a poor ranking. The Tax Foundation has released its annual State Tax Competitiveness Index, which compares each state on more than 150 variables in five areas of taxation: corporate taxes, individual income taxes, sales and excise taxes, property and wealth taxes, and unemployment insurance taxes. The authors said states landing near the bottom of the rankings tend to have several issues in common: complex, nonneutral taxes with comparatively high rates. They typically have high and progressive income tax rates; impose harmful gross receipts, capital stock, and bequest taxes; penalize capital investment through poorly designed corporate taxes; and have ill-structured sales tax bases that include a disproportionate share of business inputs. Illinois ranked 37th overall and near the bottom in the corporate, unemployment insurance and property tax categories. Senior Policy Analyst Andrey Yushkov said Illinois ranks 13th in individual taxes, but if the so-called “millionaires tax,” which was approved by voters in a non binding question on Election Day, is put into place, the state will slip in the rankings. “If this additional 3% surtax on millionaires is ultimately implemented and the constitution of the state is changed, then we’ll detrimentally affect the tax competitiveness in this particular category,” said Yushkov. According to the study, the top three tax-friendly states are Wyoming, South Dakota and Alaska. New York came in last place, followed by New Jersey and California. “The index rewards states for structurally sound, pro-growth tax policies, making it a useful tool for policymakers who want their states’ tax systems to be welcoming to business and human capital,” said Yushkov.

LOS ANGELES — Until he sustained a season-ending knee injury last week in the Western Conference final, Galaxy playmaker Riqui Puig was having a tremendous season. So I heard. I watched Puig play only twice this year, once in the Galaxy's season-opening 1-1 draw with Inter Miami and a second time in his team's Fourth of July defeat to LAFC at the Rose Bowl. Outside of short highlight clips on social media, I never saw the former Barcelona prospect, not even when he assisted on the goal that sent the Galaxy to the MLS Cup final. That wasn't a reflection of my interest. Some of my friends will make fun of me for publicly admitting this, but I like Major League Soccer. I covered the league in my first job out of college and have casually kept up with it since. I take my children to a couple of games a year. My 11-year-old son owns Galaxy and LAFC hats but no Dodgers or Lakers merchandise. When flipping through channels in the past, if presented with the choice of, say, college football or MLS, I usually watched MLS. But not this year. While the MLS Cup final between the Galaxy and New York Red Bulls will be shown on Fox and Fox Deportes, the majority of games are now exclusively behind a paywall, courtesy of the league's broadcasting deal with Apple. MLS Season Pass subscriptions were reasonably priced — $79 for the entire season for Apple TV+ subscribers, $99 for non-subscribers — but I was already paying for DirecTV Stream, Netflix, Amazon Prime, PlayStation Plus and who knows what else. MLS became a casualty in my household, as well as in many others, and the possibility of being out of sight and out of mind should be a concern for a league that is looking to expand its audience. Which isn't to say the league made a mistake. This was a gamble MLS had to take. Now in the second year of a 10-year, $2.5 billion deal with Apple, MLS did what Major League Baseball is talking about doing, which is to centralize its broadcasting rights and sell them to a digital platform. Regional sports networks have been decimated by cord cutting, making traditional economic models unsustainable. The move to Apple not only increased the league's broadcast revenues — previous deals with ESPN, Fox and Univision were worth a combined $90 million annually, according to multiple reports — but also introduced a measure of uniformity in the league. The quality of the broadcasts are better than they were under regional sports networks. Viewers know where to watch games and when, as every one of them is on Season Pass and most of them are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. local time either on Wednesday or Saturday. "That's been fueling our growth and driving our fan engagement," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said Friday at his annual state of the league address. Apple and MLS declined to reveal the number of League Pass subscribers, but the league provided polling figures that indicated 94% of viewers offered positive or neutral reviews of League Pass. The average viewing time for a game is about 65 minutes for a 90-minute game, according to Garber. In other words, the League Pass is well-liked — by the people who have it. The challenge now is to increase that audience. The launch of League Pass last year coincided with the arrival of Lionel Messi, which presumably resulted in a wave of subscriptions. But the league can't count on the appearance of the next Messi; there is only one of him. MLS pointed to how its fans watch sports on streaming devices or recorded television than any other U.S. sports league, as well as how 71% of its fans are under the age of 45. The league also pointed to how it effectively drew more viewers to the Apple broadcast of Inter Miami's postseason opener with a livestream of a "Messi Cam' on TikTok, indicating further collaborations with wide-reaching entities could be in its future. Garber mentioned how Season Pass is available in other countries. The commissioner also made note of how Apple places games every week in front of its paywall. "What we have, really, is a communication problem," Garber said. "This is new, and we've got to work with Apple, we've got to work with our clubs and we've got to work with our partners to get more exposure to what we think is a great product." The greatest benefit to the league could be Apple's vested interest in improving the on-field product. MLS insiders said Apple has not only encouraged teams to sign more high-profile players but also pushed the league to switch to a fall-to-spring calendar more commonplace in other parts of the world, reasoning that doing so would simplify the process of buying and selling players. The on-field product is what matters. The on-field product is why MLS continues to face competition for viewers from overseas leagues. The on-field product is why the league hasn't succeeded in converting every soccer fan into a MLS fan. And ultimately, if casual viewers such as myself are to pay to watch the Galaxy or LAFC on a screen of some kind, the on-field product will be why. ©2024 Los Angeles Times. Visit latimes.com . As the gaming industry continues to evolve and innovate, it is evident that developers are increasingly focused on providing players with a wide range of customization options to personalize their gaming experience. The inclusion of the blue and pink skin in "Assassin's Creed: Valhalla - Wrath of the Druids" reflects this commitment to diversity and creativity, offering players the freedom to express themselves in ways that resonate with them.Inspired by Tether’s success, the world’s banking giants are showing interest in stablecoins. As Bloomberg News reported Saturday (Dec. 28), some banks are already there, with Societe Generale – Forge (SG-Forge) opening its euro-backed stablecoin to retail investors earlier this year. Revolut is reportedly considering its own version , as is AllUnity, a venture involving the Deutsche Bank-owned DWS. Meanwhile, the report added, American banks are expected to follow suit once Congress enacts stablecoin legislation. A similar thing happened in Europe: the adoption of the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation and Tether’s decision to discontinue its EURt stablecoin has opened the door for competitors. “Do I think that other banks will be issuing their own stablecoins?” Jean-Marc Stenger , CEO of SG-Forge, said in an interview with Bloomberg. “The answer is yes. It’s heavy lifting, I am not sure it will happen any time soon, but it will happen.” He added that his firm is already in discussions with other banks that want to use its stablecoins, and is also exploring partnerships or white-labeling its techs to allow banks to issue their own coins. Visa, meanwhile, launched a tokenization network in October for banks to issue stablecoins , is collaborating with BBVA on a pilot in next year, and is in talks with many other banks. “We’ve seen demand from banks in Hong Kong, Singapore and Brazil,” Cuy Sheffield , Visa’s head of crypto, told Bloomberg. “We are actively engaged with a number of banks across the world at various stages of the process.” As PYMNTS wrote in October, the scale of Visa’s network and its relationship with financial institutions around the world allow it to add stability and legitimacy to stablecoins. “By enabling banks to issue their own stablecoins and integrate tokenized deposits into their systems, Visa could foster widespread adoption, reducing the risk of market panic that often leads to de-pegging events,” that report said. “Moreover, as banks enter the fray with their regulatory frameworks in place, the perception of stablecoins as a credible asset class could improve.” Writing about the issue last week, PYMNTS argued that stablecoins’ rise has become impossible to dismiss, as the currency continues its ascent as the foundation of cross-border and enterprise crypto payments and a bridge to traditional finance. “Cross-border payments, historically plagued by high fees and slow transaction times, underwent a significant transformation in 2024,” that report said. “Blockchain technology emerged as a key enabler, offering transparency, speed and cost efficiency. Stablecoins played a crucial role, allowing businesses to bypass traditional correspondent banking networks and settle transactions almost instantaneously.”On the other hand, there is a vocal group of players who have criticized the inclusion of blue skin as unrealistic and disruptive to the historical accuracy that the Assassin's Creed series is renowned for. They argue that the decision to incorporate such fantastical elements detracts from the immersive experience and undermines the game's credibility as a representation of Norse culture and mythology. For some, the blue skin feels out of place and clashes with the grounded, gritty depiction of the Viking era that the game strives to achieve.
From Idu Jude, Abuja The National Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Soludo, has urged members of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party to end the Supreme Court victory celebrations and focus on work in their respective states and localities. The National Leader made this statement over the weekend in Abuja during the National Executive Council Meeting (NEC) to mark the end of the fiscal year 2024. Soludo also extended a hand of fellowship to Nigerians, inviting them to join APGA, which he described as “the most progressive party in Nigeria at the moment.” Professor Soludo said, “We want to unite all aggrieved members of the party for progress and the new Nigeria we all desire. I want to tell you that the Supreme Court victory is over and remains a call for unity.” He expressed joy over the appointment of Ambassador Mrs Bianca Ojukwu as a cabinet member in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. “Under this administration, a member of our party is appointed a minister, and the President moves outside APC. We shall grow from strength to strength because APGA is built to last,” he stated. Reflecting on his administration in Anambra State, Soludo highlighted efforts to leave behind a lasting legacy, including a free education policy and significant infrastructural development, which he described as “promises kept to walk the talk.” The National Chairman of the party, Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa, while welcoming delegates from across the country, expressed optimism about the party’s future following years of struggle for survival and a protracted court case that recently ended at the Supreme Court. While chronicling APGA’s journey, its founding dreams, and its role as a political voice for the South-East, Ezeokenwa noted that despite recent internal challenges orchestrated by “political merchants,” the party had grown from a regional movement to a national entity. He acknowledged Professor Soludo’s pivotal role during the party’s legal battles, describing the governor as an invaluable asset throughout APGA’s struggles.
