Even the most firmly established constitutional rights often seem to be hanging on by a thread. That may be the lesson of the case of William Maisano of Guilford, a retired police officer and former school board candidate who, according to Connecticut’s Hearst newspapers and the Yankee Institute’s journalism project, Connecticut Inside Investigator, could be imprisoned for as much as five years for his conviction on a felony charge of threatening and a misdemeanor charge of breach of peace. Maisano’s “crime” seems to have been only his sending an e-mail to the principal of Guilford High School asserting that there would be “hell to pay” if she allowed a teacher to dye her hair in rainbow colors to show support for sexual minorities during the school’s graduation ceremony last June. Maisano saw the rainbow hair plan as more of the political propagandizing in school that he had complained about at Board of Education meetings – propagandizing that indeed is common now in schools throughout the country. The principal told the local police she was concerned about Maisano’s e-mail. So an officer interviewed Maisano by telephone, and he said he never intended to hurt anyone. He sent another e-mail to school officials explaining that by “hell to pay” he had meant generating unfavorable publicity. Whereupon the officer closed the case. But then the teacher with the rainbow hair complained to the police that she felt dreadfully threatened by Maisano’s e-mail. So this time they arrested Maisano for breach of peace, and when the case got to Superior Court in New Haven, a prosecutor added a charge of felony threatening, perhaps because Maisano insisted on his First Amendment rights and would not plea-bargain. A trial was held and on Oct. 11 a jury convicted Maisano on both counts. Sentencing is scheduled next week. Connecticut Inside Investigator notes that court precedents hold that to be a criminal matter threatening must be more specific and constitute more than political hyperbole. So if Maisano has the sense to find a civil-liberties lawyer – someone who does what the Connecticut chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union used to do before succumbing to political correctness – his conviction may be overturned by the first appeals court to hear it. But a reversal of Maisano’s conviction won’t mean that the danger to freedom of speech in Connecticut has passed. For the case has demonstrated several related dangers. First is that the case has not been widely publicized by news organizations, though it puts everyone’s rights at risk, including the rights of news organizations themselves, which routinely engage in political controversies. Second is that the political left has discovered that the quickest way of silencing contrary views is to assert that one feels threatened by them. This is supposed to nullify free speech. Hence the increasing demands, especially in what calls itself higher education, to establish “safe spaces” where no contrary thoughts are allowed. And third, in convicting Maisano for his disagreeable politics rather than any real danger he posed, the six members of his jury demonstrated a willingness to sign their own rights away. Lacking much appreciation for civil liberties, most people might agree with the jury. With elegant understatement many years ago Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter noted that “the safeguards of liberty have frequently been forged in controversies involving not-very-nice people.” For many years the political left understood this and was the courageous defender of freedom of speech and press. Not anymore. Having tasted power, the left is now more oppressive than the right used to be and enthusiastically advocates censorship by the government, while the right, finding itself on the oppressed side now, has become the defender of free speech. If political disagreement and hurt feelings become cause for criminal prosecution, as they seem to have become in Connecticut, before long there really may be “hell to pay.” Maybe the new administration of “fascist” Donald Trump will give the left a reason to reconsider its own fascism. In April, the Department of Transportation announced new airline rules requiring prompt automatic cash refunds to passengers when owed. The final rule took eff ect Oct. 28 and should simplify and speed up the process of receiving your money back due to a canceled or significantly changed flight or delayed luggage. "Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them — without headaches or haggling," said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. "Our new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers." According to the Department of Transportation, under the old rules, airlines were permitted to set their own standards for what kind of flight changes warranted a refund, which made receiving a refund for a canceled or delayed flight a complicated aff air. This was seen during the global technology outage in July that disrupted several major airlines and caused thousands of flight cancellations and delays. Many customers were left to wait hours in customer-service lines to start the reimbursement process for their chosen airline. The new rule clearly defines the circumstances in which airlines must provide refunds and how they should be administered, making the reimbursement process much easier if your trip goes awry. According to the Department of Transportation, this is when customers are entitled to a refund: Canceled or significantly changed flights If your flight is canceled or significantly changed and you do not accept alternative transportation or travel credits off ered, you will be refunded. According to the Department of Transportation, significant changes to a flight include departure or arrival times that are more than three hours domestically and six hours internationally; departures or arrivals from a different airport; increases in the number of connections; instances where passengers are downgraded to a lower class of service; or connections at diff erent airports or flights on diff erent planes that are less accessible or accommodating to a person with a disability. Significantly delayed baggage return If you file a mishandled-baggage report, you will be entitled to a refund of your checked-bag fee if your luggage is not delivered within 12 hours of your domestic flight arriving at the gate or 15 to 30 hours of your international flight arriving at the gate. Extra services not provided If you pay for an additional service, like in-flight Wi-Fi or a specific seat selection, and you don't receive this accommodation, you are entitled to a refund. The Department of Transportation has also outlined several rules for how refunds will be processed: ■ Automatic: Airlines must automatically issue refunds. Customers will no longer have to explicitly request a refund — which can be a complicated aff air. ■ Prompt: Refunds must be issued within seven business days of refunds becoming due for credit-card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods. ■ Cash or original form of payment: Airlines must provide refunds in cash or whatever original payment method the individual used to make the purchase. ■ Total amount: Airlines and ticket agents must provide full refunds of the ticket purchase price minus the value of any portion of transportation already used. Hannah Waddingham has made it very clear that Ted Lasso and its cast mean the world to her. She’s besties with Juno Temple , she and Jason Sudeikis are very tight, and she’s loud and proud about the fact that this show has made the most positive impact on her life. However, it’s not just for professional reasons, it’s personal too, as she revealed the emotional story and circumstances behind what led to her auditioning for one of Apple TV+’s best shows . Long before Ted Lasso , Waddingham was in Belfast shooting a project, and her daughter became “seriously ill with a mysterious affliction.” She was later diagnosed with Henoch-Schonlein purpura, which is an immune-mediated disease that causes swelling of small blood vessels that can cause kidney damage. The actress had a really hard time getting back home to her kiddo because of travel delays, and that scared her a lot. So, after that, she decided to pursue roles in shows that were shot in London. While explaining this for Jeremy Egner’s book Believe: The Untold Story Behind Ted Lasso, The Show That Kicked Its Way Into Our Hearts , she said she was determined to stay close to home, and she told her management team the following: I said, ‘This is not happening again. Whether that means that I have to dumb down what I’m doing or be less committed to work that might have the possibility of taking me abroad or whatever, I’m perfectly happy to be here doing bits and pieces. I’ll do concerts, I’ll do voice-overs.’ Later, she made it clear that her priority was her daughter, and she put her foot down, saying: And I said, ‘Look, I get it. I don’t want it this way either. But I’m first and foremost a mum and more importantly a single mum, and I’m happy with that decision.’ Then, her daughter got better, and Waddingham started looking for more work again. Two months into that quest, Ted Lasso entered the equation. She explained that before she sought more work she “looked up at the skies” and said thank you for saving her little girl. Then, she asked for a job, specifying exactly what she wanted: ‘...And also, can I be so cheeky as to say, could it be something that shows everything that I can do and things that I don’t feel like I’ve been able to do yet? And is there any way it could be here, maybe around the corner?’ And I’m not joking: in two months, the audition came in for Ted Lasso, which shoots forty minutes away from my house. Completely mental. Ask the universe, people, it works! It couldn’t have worked out any better too. After a great audition process, which included the creators of Game of Thrones sending an email on Waddingham’s behalf, she eventually landed the role. Jason Sudeikis also made it clear that he knew from the minute he saw her audition that she was their Rebecca. In the co-creator and Ted Lasso actor’s words: It’s one of those neat things where sometimes that right thing shows up at the right time, and you’re ready for it and they’re ready for you. Olivia Rubin is a 43-year-old fashion designer who created her own rainbow-inspired brand in 2017. In 2014, she purposefully dressed in black to blend when she was struggling with postpartum anxiety. A rainbow skirt she designed in 2017 was the start of her personal and business reawakening. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Olivia Rubin. It has been edited for length and clarity. I've been in fashion for more than 20 years. After studying for a Bachelor's in fashion print at Central St Martin's, I worked in the industry without a break until 2012, when I found out I was pregnant with my first child. I felt run down and burnt out , so it was a good time to wind down. After the birth of my daughter in 2014, I felt depressed, anxious, and alienated. At this time, postpartum depression wasn't something talked about, so I hadn't known to expect it and didn't understand that it was happening to me. I didn't verbalize this to anyone because I didn't know it was a thing. It even affected the way I dressed for years. I wanted to blend in For as long as I can remember, I always loved wearing lots of color . But those post-baby months and years were full of black. The decision to dress in the dark color wasn't because I was too tired to decide what to wear. It was a purposeful decision that reflected my inner anxiety at the time. Related stories All I wanted to do was blend in . Black was a way to blend in. In 2015, a year after my daughter was born, I was still wearing black, but there was this one outfit I wore — I dressed up the black with brilliant red lipstick and red boots. It was the start of me starting to feel like me again. A year later, I gave birth to my second daughter, but I also picked up a freelance contract for a high street company. Working again felt right. I've always been the kind of person who needs something besides just family life, and I feel like this was it. My oldest was in p,reschool and I just worked around the baby. For the first time in years, I also wanted to make clothes for myself. I made a skirt, a gray printed skirt, and was so proud of myself. I couldn't find anything I liked, so I made my own I continued making my own clothes, for my own personal use, in 2017. I wanted to add some color back in, after years of black. I went shopping to find something that caught my eye, and I couldn't find what I was looking for. I wanted a piece no one else had, something unusual. I found a printing company in the UK to print my surface design onto wool and found a seamstress close by to make the skirt I had designed. It was unique, and I loved it. It was a rainbow skirt. When I posted it on Instagram, my feed absolutely blew up. The skirt went viral, and so many people wanted it. It was a huge turning point and the start of my own brand. I had never intended to have my own brand — I just wanted to make clothes that made me feel good. But a brand is what it all became. I started wearing color again After that rainbow skirt, I found myself again. I started wearing color again and helping others do the same. I was contacted by shops that wanted to sell my clothes to their customers, and I was traveling all around the world showing my collections. It happened in the blink of an eye. It just kept snowballing. I was making a million pounds at one point. Everything I created, I wore. It was all bright or pastels, inspired by the rainbow. During the pandemic, I created a loungewear collection. By day, I was homeschooling my two girls, and in every spare moment, I was packaging for customers. I enjoyed growing my business during this time and connecting with my community on social media, but I remember it being a lot to handle. I'm focused on sustainability At the end of 2023, I decided to start slowing everything down. I had recently turned 40 and didn't want to be traveling all the time, leaving my kids behind. I didn't want to be rushing around constantly, without any time to just enjoy designing without a deadline. Since then, I've been thinking more about sustainability — no one needs this much retail. I've stopped my big collections, and I'm not producing hundreds of wasted samples and production that contribute to landfills. In hindsight, I know I wasn't happy during my black clothing phase, but I wouldn't change it. It was a part of my journey. Sitting at 4-6 and still in with a shot at playoff football, the Buccaneers, who are currently on a four-game losing streak, know that they must start winning games, or else the season will begin to get away from them. Thanks for the feedback.[Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2.] Yellowstone has almost killed off one character per episode in what’s presumed to be its final season. Out of four episodes released so far (and just two more to go), three have featured a major character death. The first was John Dutton’s, brought about by Kevin Costner’s shocking exit from the series. Viewers assumed the Dutton patriarch would be killed off to explain Costner’s absence from Season 5 Part 2. But the subsequent deaths have been more shocking. Sarah Atwood’s (Dawn Olivieri) murder made sense for the story, given the hit she ordered on John didn’t go as planned in the aftermath. But the death of Denim Richards ‘ Colby in Episode 12 was entirely unnecessary, if you ask us. Not only because the story didn’t need it, but also because it took time away from addressing the burning questions we still need answered before the show closes up shop ( if Season 5 really is the end — the show is certainly keeping viewers on their toes ). Here, we lay out the remaining burning questions we need answered before Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 comes to a close, in no particular order. The biggest one is the one we’ve already addressed: When will Rip ( Cole Hauser ) find out what Jamie ( Wes Bentley ) did to Beth ( Kelly Reilly ), and will Kayce ( Luke Grimes ) find out? We lay out those possibilities here , but below, find our other lingering questions. Wes Bentley as Jamie and Katherine Cunningham as Christine in Yellowstone (Paramount Network) The last viewers heard about Jamie’s son was in Season 5 Part 1, when Jamie was driving Beth home from her overnight prison stint. Beth lashed out in rage at the sight of the car seat in the backseat, which revealed that Jamie was a parent. Learning that the child is a boy named after him made Beth even more angry. She threatened to take Jamie’s son from him like he took her ability to have children. The threat didn’t seem to be against the baby’s life, but rather that she would take his son and kill Jamie. The attorney has had bigger issues to tackle this season thus far, like trying to renew the airport lease his father canceled, launch a campaign to be elected governor in the special election prompted by John’s death, and of course deal with the fallout of Sarah being killed by the hitmen agency she hired to take out John (an investigation in which he’s now a primary suspect). But still, where is his son? Viewers have heard nary a peep about the kid in Part 2. Will Episode 13 bring him back into the plot, along with his mother, Christine ( Katherine Cunningham )? Perhaps part of Beth’s revenge on Jamie over his involvement in John’s death will entail finding the boy. That would be one way to get Jamie back under her thumb. Beth has long threatened that Rip would kill Jamie once he finds out that he had Beth forcibly sterilized as a teen. As much as Rip coming in to kill an enemy has made for some of the show’s more memorable moments (like the snake in the cooler), it does feel a little too obvious at this point to just have Rip involved in Jamie’s potential demise. It would be more intriguing and cathartic to see Beth do it herself or with Rip’s help — she’s certainly more emboldened to take the reins since she’s been convinced that Jamie planned their father’s murder (he didn’t, but it was his idea and she’ll never believe he isn’t responsible). Beth is one of the few members of her family who hasn’t committed murder on Yellowstone . And in fact, she’s one of the only ones who is appalled by the tradition of taking enemies “to the train station” (she was kept in the dark about this until the Season 5 Part 1 finale). Beth would save her first kill for Jamie. But at this point, given the excessive deaths we’ve seen this season, we could also see the series going for the tragic shock value of flipping the switch on Beth and having her killed by Jamie in the end. That does seem less likely, as Yellowstone almost always only kills its villains. And Jamie has long been painted as a villain, but one with the potential to be redeemed. There’s hardly any time left for a redemption arc, though. Paramount Network We’d be OK with Jamie and Beth both ending the series alive, but only if Jamie is in prison. He’s been on such a downward spiral and rejecting every opportunity to do the right thing for so long, becoming the fall guy for his dad’s homicide would be a twisted poetic justice. With Sarah dead too, he and the hitmen are the only people who could be held legally accountable for the murder. While Kayce has physically threatened Jamie in recent episodes, he’s clearly struggling with conflicting feelings of love for his big brother. What if the season ends with Kayce stopping Beth from killing Jamie, but helping her put him in prison for life to avenge John? Paramount Network In this context, that wouldn’t be a good thing. We’ve seen Kayce slowly descend into a darker mental state in the episodes since John’s murder. Every revelation about the death makes Kayce more and more lethal. In Episode 12, he held a child at gunpoint to threaten Grant Horton ( Matt Gerald ), the man who runs the agency that carried out the hit on John. Costner’s character could justify just about anything to defend his family’s legacy and ownership of the ranch; he spent decades killing foes in secret to help on this front. The lengths to which John would go to protect the ranch used to make Kayce and Monica ( Kelsey Asbille ) rebel against the family; it was only in recent years that this relationship was mended and Kayce and Monica felt comfortable associating themselves with them again. That comfort has transformed into full-blown support, and Kayce’s in a dark mindset as he attempts to avenge his father. How does the veteran come back from holding a child at gunpoint? Is he becoming the violent man who can defend any detestable action that he once feared? And moreover, how will Monica react if/when she finds out that Kayce threatened to kill a kid? We can’t imagine that she would be OK with that, but she’s also shown great concern for Kayce’s mental well-being in Season 5 Part 2. She may take the threat against that child and her father as a sign for her to step in and bring Kayce back from the edge. How to Watch New Episodes of 'Yellowstone' on Streaming Beth and Rip were selling off the horses and cattle in Episode 12 in an attempt to raise the money needed to keep the ranch’s land instead of selling off a piece of it. Beth revealed in talks with Thomas Rainwater ( Gil Birmingham ) that she has resigned herself to losing at least some of the family’s acreage that they’ve owned for a century. While the plan to undo John’s actions as governor that protected the land and canceled Market Equities’ airport lease doesn’t seem likely to succeed — especially not with Senator Lynelle Perry ( Wendy Moniz ) and Clara ( Lilli Kay ) determined to thwart Jamie’s efforts — the walls still are closing in on the Duttons. The show has said that selling some of the land is inevitable, but hopefully whatever they end up selling (if they sell) is given to Rainwater and the reservation or perhaps made into a national park. Speaking of Rainwater, why does he have so little to do this season? He seems primed to compromise with the Duttons after an entire series of fighting to get the land that once belonged to his people back. That leads us to our next and final question... In 1883 , Spotted Eagle ( Graham Greene ) told James Dutton ( Tim McGraw ) that his people would rise up and regain control of the Yellowstone ranch’s land in seven generations. Earlier on Yellowstone , Kayce said he saw “the end of us” in a vision and, in Season 5 Part 2, added that that “end” will be a choice. Kayce told Tate ( Brecken Merrill ) that if it’s his dream to run the ranch one day, he would make the ranch his life to preserve it for his son. But Tate more so envisions living a simpler life on the family’s land while someone else runs it, although he still wants to keep the land in the family. Every Yellowstone spinoff has questioned if the Duttons can maintain control of the ranch’s land. If Spotted Eagle’s prophecy wasn’t meant to be a true foreshadowing for the Dutton’s fate and Yellowstone ‘s ending, then it would just be a pointless throwaway line. The 1883 prophecy and Kayce’s vision would easily combine by having Tate inherit the ranch. Kayce knows that his son doesn’t fully desire running the family business himself, and perhaps knowing that but having him inherit the ranch anyway is the choice the vision foresaw. Our ideal Yellowstone ending is the indigenous people getting their land back. Perhaps Tate will inherit it and then give it to his community on the reservation while still living on the grounds, bringing everything full circle. This would open things up to keep the current ranchers employed for a while longer as well (their fates are also still up in the air as control of the ranch hangs in the balance).
