Manhattan police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione , suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson . Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, while carrying a gun, mask and writings linking him to the ambush. Mangione is being held without bail in Pennsylvania on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Late Monday, Manhattan prosecutors charged him with five counts, including murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Here's the latest: But Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks says it won’t be a substantial barrier to returning Mangione to New York. He noted that defendants contest extradition “all the time,” including in simple retail theft cases. Dickey, his defense lawyer, questioned whether the second-degree murder charge filed in New York might be eligible for bail under Pennsylvania law, but prosecutors raised concerns about both public safety and Mangione being a potential flight risk, and the judge denied it. Mangione will continue to be housed at a state prison in Huntingdon. He has 14 days to challenge the detention. Prosecutors, meanwhile, have a month to seek a governor’s warrant out of New York. He shouted something that was partly unintelligible, but referred to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people.” He’s there for an arraignment on local charges stemming from his arrest Monday. He was dressed in an orange jumpsuit as officers led him from a vehicle into the courthouse. Local defense lawyer Thomas Dickey is expected to represent the 26-year-old at a Tuesday afternoon hearing at the Blair County Courthouse. Dickey declined comment before the hearing. Mangione could have the Pennsylvania charges read aloud to him and may be asked to enter a plea. They include possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. In New York, he was charged late Monday with murder in the death of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione likely was motivated by his anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain with corporate greed, said a a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive healthcare system in the world and that the profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of the suspect’s hand-written notes and social media postings. He appeared to view the targeted killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO as a symbolic takedown, asserting in his note that he is the “first to face it with such brutal honesty,” the bulletin said. Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski a “political revolutionary” and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, the document said. A felony warrant filed in New York cites Altoona Officer Christy Wasser as saying she found the writings along with a semi-automatic pistol and an apparent silencer. The filing echoes earlier statements from NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny who said Mangione had a three-page, handwritten document that shows “some ill will toward corporate America.” Mangione is now charged in Pennsylvania with being a fugitive of justice. A customer at the McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where Mangione was arrested said one of his friends had commented beforehand that the man looked like the suspect wanted for the shooting in New York City. “It started out almost a little bit like a joke, my one friend thought he looked like the shooter,” said the customer, who declined to give his full name, on Tuesday. “It wasn’t really a joke, but we laughed about it,” he added. Stock market today: Wall Street drifts lower as it waits for inflation data(Bloomberg) — The founder of the troubled device rental startup Grover who was forced out of the company a year ago is trying to stage a comeback by fighting a restructuring effort that may wipe out the value of investors’ equity. Michael Cassau, who created Grover in 2015 and left his post as chief executive officer last year after investors lost confidence in his leadership, is asking shareholders to now hand him their stakes in the German company so he can build a majority position, according to a presentation reviewed by Bloomberg. In exchange, he’s promising to issue them a deferred payment that values the startup at as much as €900 million ($945 million) if he can turn it around and achieve certain growth targets, the documents show. Cassau is looking to head off a plan by the startup’s current management team to restructure Grover’s debt in a way that he says would wipe out the value that existing equity holders have in the company, according to the presentation and people familiar with the situation, who asked not to be identified because the information is not public. Grover has used up half of its share capital, the money a company raises by issuing stock in its business, and plans to give investors an update on the state of restructuring efforts at a Dec. 17 meeting, a company notice reviewed by Bloomberg shows. Helge Reich, an attorney representing Grover, didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment on Cassau’s proposal. The company declined to provide comment on its restructuring efforts. “Due to the usual confidentiality obligations, I cannot comment on any correspondence regarding my involvement in the company,” Cassau, who currently owns 12.5% of Grover, said by email. “I still consider Grover to be a company with enormous potential and believe that under my leadership, Grover can be one of the leading startups in Germany, Europe and worldwide.” Grover’s financial troubles echo many startups in Germany that achieved massive valuations when low interest rates at the start of the decade helped fuel cash-burning operations. Grover said in 2021 it was valued at over $1 billion, before false starts like a failed push into the US market and rising interest rates left it with a heavy debt burden. German-speaking countries are on track to have fewer technology unicorns this year for the first time since 2015, according an October report by boutique investment bank Clipperton. Grover has hired US investment bank Houlihan Lokey Inc. to advise on restructuring its debt, according to documents reviewed by Bloomberg and people familiar with the matter. Consultants McKinsey & Co. and AlixPartners are also advising the startup, according to the presentation and a person familiar with the situation. Spokespeople for Houlihan Lokey, AlixPartners and McKinsey declined to comment. The company has raised at least €800 million in debt funding in Europe and $250 million in the US, according to a press release Grover issued in September 2022. It identified M&G and Fasanara Capital in statements as among its lenders. A spokesperson for M&G declined to comment. Fasanara didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment. Cassau is calling for votes at the Dec. 17 meeting to dismiss interim Chief Executive Officer Linda Rubin and Chairman Franco Danesi and reinstate himself at the company’s helm, according to documents reviewed by Bloomberg. By German law, these items must be added to the agenda. Under Cassau’s plan, Grover would raise $150 million with a new convertible loan and restructure asset-backed debt in the first quarter of 2025 while cutting payroll, general and administrative expenses by at least 75%, the presentation shows. The size of the payment to current equity holders who sign on to Cassau’s program is contingent on Grover improving its valuation, according to the proposal. Since Cassau left, Rubin has taken several cost-saving measures, including pulling the company out of the US market, scrapping new products and slashing staff by about one-third to 300 workers, according to press releases and local media reports. Grover said it raised money in July with €50 million in a bridge financing round from investors including Circularity Capital, Energy Impact Partners and Korelya. A global electronics firm plans to markedly expand its manufacturing capabilities at a campus in Plano that’s expected to bring its total employment in the city up to 1,500 people. Taiwan-based Delta Electronics Inc. already has an existing 435,000-square-foot advanced research-and-development and manufacturing facility at 601 Data Dr. in Plano focused on developing smart energy-saving products and solutions for artificial intelligence and cloud data centers, telecom networks, electric vehicle charging and more. The company plans significant new construction in two new phases, according to an announcement from the City of Plano. Delta Electronics has disclosed plans to build a 477,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and a 90,000-square-foot office building in phase two, and a future 477,000-square-foot facility in phase three, both located at Lotus Drive, according to the city announcement. Once the project's complete, the company’s manufacturing facilities in Plano are expected to span close to 1.5 million square feet and employ more than 1,500 employees by 2031, according to the announcement. Construction of the second phase is expected to be completed by 2028 with the third phase to be completed by 2031. The announcement did not specify how many new jobs the plant expansion will involve, how much Delta is investing into the expansion or whether state or local economic incentives are part of the plan to expand in Plano. The announcement called the expansion "a significant milestone in its efforts to attract world-class manufacturing of next-generation technologies." Delta Electronics evaluated sites in multiple states before deciding that Plano would be the ideal location for the expansion, Plano Mayor John Muns said in the announcement. "We understand how critical it can be to choose a location for a company’s operation, especially one of this size, and feel proud that Delta Electronics agrees that Plano offers the resources and partnership to build a lasting relationship," Muns said. Delta Electronics, one of Taiwan’s largest companies, provides power management and internet-connected smart green solutions and products. Founded in 1971, Delta has nearly $13 billion in annual revenues, a workforce of more than 81,000 employees and operations worldwide. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said on Saturday that her department is "really worried" President-elect Donald Trump 's focus on mass deportation of undocumented immigrants will divert funds and resources from investigations into serial killers, cold case homicides, and human trafficking cases, among other state and federal cases. Trump, who won the 2024 presidential election earlier this month, campaigned on a platform promising mass deportations for illegal migrants and stricter border policies. The president-elect has previously warned that he'll deploy the U.S. National Guard, as well as government agencies, to carry out his proposed deportation policy . However, there are questions over the legal limits on military involvement in domestic law enforcement. On November 18, Trump affirmed a post by conservative commentator Tom Fitton on Truth Social that claimed the Trump administration is "prepared to declare a national emergency and will use military assets to reverse the Biden invasion through a mass deportation program." The president-elect reshared the post and wrote: "TRUE!!!" MSNBC's Alex Witt said on Saturday, "President-elect Trump says he plans to declare a national emergency now to secure the necessary resources to deport millions of undocumented immigrants," before asking Nessel, a Democrat who has served in the state's top legal post since 2019, "How might the diversion of funds to deport people impact our state and federal partnerships in human trafficking, and cold case sexual assault?" Nessel responded that "we are really worried about this" as the state partners with local, state, and federal authorities, including the FBI and Homeland Security on various crime cases. "We've sort of already been told by some of those [partner] entities, that some of our ongoing projects where we work to apprehend serial killers and cold case homicides and human trafficking cases, that they don't know they're going to be available to work with us on those kinds of cases in the future because they're going to be so busy diverting their finite resources to try to apprehend individuals who may be in the country illegally," Nessel said. She added: "When you decide to use your resources to capture those individuals [undocumented immigrants] as opposed to going after murders, and serial rapists, and human traffickers, we're making our communities a whole lot less safe by doing that." In response to Nessel's comments on MSNBC, Steven Cheung, Trump's campaign spokesperson who has been tapped to serve as his communications director, told Newsweek in an email Saturday afternoon: "This idiot is trying to play the victim here in order to subvert the will of the American people who voted overwhelmingly for President Trump's immigration and border policies." Newsweek has reached out Nessel's office for comment via email on Saturday. Meanwhile, Karoline Leavitt, Trump-Vance transition team spokesperson, previously told Newsweek that Trump "will marshal every federal and state power necessary to institute the largest deportation operation of illegal criminals, drug dealers, and human traffickers in American history while simultaneously lowering costs for families." Nessel has publicly criticized Trump, having authored an opinion piece in the Detroit Free Press on Wednesday that criticized several of Trump's Cabinet picks for their histories of sexual assault allegations. In August, Nessel warned of a second Trump presidency during an appearance on MSNBC 's The Katie Phang Show. In reference to the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot and Trump's alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election results, in which President Joe Biden won, Nessel said, "I think that what we saw in 2020, it is going to pale in comparison to what we are likely going to see in 2024 and, again, it is not my job to decide winners or losers. It is my job to defend the will of the people, whatever that might be." Trump, meanwhile, won the battleground state of Michigan in November against Vice President Kamala Harris .
